Diving Deeper: Your Questions Answered

Since we couldn’t cram all of your fantastic questions into last week’s video, we’re thrilled to bring you the highly anticipated follow-up! This time, we’re tackling even more of the funny, random, and wonderfully personal questions that poured in from our incredibly curious readers via Twitter and Facebook before our big blogiversary extravaganza. We absolutely loved digging into these quirky queries, which had us laughing, cringing, and reminiscing as the camera rolled. Questions like “What was your first thought when you first saw your house?”, “What chore don’t you trust the other person to do?”, “When do you guys get a chance to work out?”, and “Does Sherry wear her pajamas all day since she works from home?” kept us on our toes!

We’re basically back to share more candid insights into the Petersik household, offering a genuine glimpse behind the scenes of Young House Love. And this time, I promise Sherry is making an extra effort to control that potty mouth of hers a little bit better – though you can always watch Part 1 to see what we mean! So, settle in, grab a cup of coffee, and enjoy Part 2 of our reader Q&A below, or head over here on YouTube for the full video experience.

Can’t Watch the Video? Here’s a Full Recap of Our Personal Q&A Answers!

For those who prefer to read or simply can’t watch the video right now, we’ve put together a comprehensive recap of all the juicy details we shared. Get ready for some honest confessions, surprising revelations, and plenty of laughs as we pull back the curtain on our lives and the journey of Young House Love.

Household Chores & Division of Labor

When it comes to household chores, we each have our strengths – and our absolute weaknesses! It turns out I don’t trust Sherry to load the dishwasher, which was a total surprise to her, but honestly, it’s a delicate art form of spatial reasoning and efficient cleaning. Plus, mowing the lawn is firmly in my domain, as I envision a perfectly striped masterpiece, while Sherry might just, shall we say, “trim around the edges.” On the flip side, Sherry would much rather I steer clear of cleaning toilets (a job she tackles with admirable dedication) and pruning the garden. I think I can wholeheartedly agree with that arrangement; we’ve definitely found our domestic harmony by acknowledging our individual quirks and delegating accordingly. It’s all about playing to our strengths to keep the Petersik abode running smoothly, or at least, relatively smoothly!

Discovering the “Petersik Style”

Our true “Petersik Style” didn’t just magically appear overnight. We think we really started to discover and refine it a few months into our blogging journey, particularly once we honed our home’s color palette. In the early days, like many new homeowners, we experimented a lot, sometimes with results that were, let’s just say, “lessons learned.” But as we continuously documented our projects, shared our thought processes, and received feedback from our amazing readers, a cohesive aesthetic began to emerge. It’s a blend of bright, fresh, and livable spaces, often incorporating a mix of high and low, old and new, and always prioritizing comfort and functionality. This evolving style became the signature look of Young House Love, a reflection of our personal tastes, practical needs, and the desire to create a home that feels uniquely “us” – a style that balances classic elements with modern twists, all while keeping things approachable and achievable for our readers.

The Spark of John’s Design Interest

While I’ve always had a latent interest in design and enjoyed flexing my creative muscles, Sherry’s undeniable passion for home decor definitely spurred mine into full bloom. Before Young House Love, I dabbled in various creative outlets, but Sherry’s enthusiasm for transforming spaces was infectious. She could see the potential in every room, every piece of furniture, and every thrift store find, igniting a similar fire in me. Now, it’s a wonderfully collaborative process where we bounce ideas off each other, challenge design concepts, and often find ourselves completing each other’s sentences when discussing a new project. Her keen eye for styling and my more structural, problem-solving approach to design often create a balanced and dynamic duo, proving that creative partnerships can truly flourish and evolve over time, especially when fueled by a shared passion for creating a beautiful home.

Sherry’s Secret to Her “Looks”

Ah, Sherry’s looks! We had a good laugh answering this one. While she’d love to take full credit, the truth is, it’s a combination of good old DNA (thanks, Mom and Dad!), a bit of strategic make-up application, and, let’s be honest, a healthy dose of Photoshop magic. In the world of blogging and online content, a little digital enhancement goes a long way to making everything look picture-perfect. It’s a playful nod to the curated reality often presented online versus the everyday, messy truth of real life. But even without the digital touch-ups, Sherry’s natural charm and vibrant personality always shine through, proving that true beauty is far more than skin deep.

Our One-Car Household & Dream Vehicles

Believe it or not, we’re a one-car household, a choice that suits our urban-suburban lifestyle surprisingly well. Currently, our trusty ride is a Nissan Maxima, which serves us perfectly for daily errands, school drop-offs, and short trips. However, the dream car conversation often sparks lively debates! If I had my way, we’d be cruising around in a used Honda Element. Its rugged versatility, ample cargo space, and utilitarian design are incredibly appealing for all our DIY hauling needs and pet-friendly adventures. Sherry, on the other hand, leans towards a used Nissan Rogue, appreciating its comfort, sleek style, and slightly more refined driving experience. It’s the one car we actually agree on for its blend of practicality and aesthetics, making it the most likely contender for our next vehicle upgrade. And somehow, in this answer, I managed to make Sherry think she was pregnant for a moment – chalk it up to my masterful comedic timing or perhaps a subconscious wish!

The True Purpose of Our Living/Dining Room

Our living and dining room serves a wonderfully dual purpose, acting as both a welcoming space for entertaining guests and, occasionally, a casualty zone for the kids’ sloppy dinners that might threaten the pristine couch in the den. We love hosting friends and family, and this room, with its open flow and inviting atmosphere, is perfect for lively conversations, shared meals, and creating lasting memories. But beyond its entertaining role, it has another very important primary occupant: Burger! Our beloved chihuahua has staked his claim on the back of the couch, where he can often be found perched like a miniature king, gazing out the window at the world passing by. It’s his favorite spot for surveillance, sunbathing, and generally overseeing the household, embodying the relaxed, pet-friendly vibe that permeates our entire home.

Our Unique “Punny” Writing Style

When it comes to our distinctive “punny” writing style, Sherry often likes to credit her background in copywriting for our playful blog voice. And while her professional training certainly contributes to our knack for catchy phrases and clever wordplay, I’m quick to reveal the real unsung heroes: our weird dads! Seriously, we have our dads’ hilarious and often groan-worthy senses of humor to thank for our love of puns and quirky analogies. Shout out to Tom and Ken for instilling in us a lifelong appreciation for a good, bad joke. Their unique perspectives and ability to find humor in almost any situation have undoubtedly shaped the lighthearted, approachable, and often self-deprecating tone that has become a hallmark of Young House Love. It’s a style that keeps things fun, relatable, and sometimes just a little bit silly!

Our Reading Habits: From Blogs to Books

Our reading habits are as varied as our personalities! We typically find ourselves devouring design blogs and home decor magazines, always on the hunt for inspiration, new trends, and creative ideas that we can adapt for our own projects and share with you. However, when we do manage to crack open a physical book, our choices diverge slightly. Sherry gravitates towards pink-covered chick lit – those heartwarming, often humorous stories that offer a perfect escape into fictional worlds. For me, it’s almost exclusively nerdish non-fiction: history, science, biographies, or anything that expands my knowledge base. Interestingly, Sherry sometimes joins me in the non-fiction realm, especially if it’s a particularly compelling topic or a memoir that catches her interest. It’s a fun reflection of our individual ways to unwind and learn, whether through lighthearted entertainment or deep dives into factual narratives.

First Impressions of Our Home

Our initial impressions of our current house couldn’t have been more different, showcasing our contrasting personalities perfectly. When Sherry first saw it, her immediate thought was an emphatic, “We have to have it!” She was instantly drawn to its charm, its potential, and the feeling of “home” it exuded. Her vision was clear: this was *the* one. My first thought, however, was a slightly more pragmatic and perhaps weary, “That’s A LOT of yard work.” Having experienced the demands of extensive landscaping in previous homes, the sprawling lawn and established gardens immediately triggered a mental checklist of maintenance tasks. It was a classic case of seeing the glass half full versus half-empty, but ultimately, Sherry’s infectious enthusiasm won me over, and now, even the yard work feels a little less daunting (most days!).

Sherry’s Work-From-Home Wardrobe

Despite working from home, Sherry manages to change out of her pajamas 99% of the time, a testament to her dedication to maintaining some semblance of a routine and professionalism, even when her office is just a few steps from her bedroom. That 1% though? It’s reserved for those truly epic “just roll out of bed and blog” kind of days! Yet, she still misses the old days in NYC, when she got all gussied up for work, complete with hair, makeup, and tottering around in 4-inch heels. It was a completely different world, and a big part of her identity. Fun fact: I had no idea she was only 5’2″ for the longest time, thanks to those skyscraper heels! The transition from corporate city life to casual home-based blogging has certainly redefined her daily wardrobe, but the desire to feel put-together, even for herself, remains a significant part of her daily ritual.

Why a Chihuahua? The Story of Burger!

The story behind getting our beloved chihuahua, Burger, is quite simple yet rooted in a bit of compromise. I really wanted a cat – I love their independent nature and quiet companionship. However, Sherry is allergic to cats, which pretty much nixed that idea from the start. So, we started looking for a dog that could offer some of the ‘cat-like’ qualities I appreciated, while being perfectly suited for Sherry’s allergies and our lifestyle. Hence, our decision to get a cat-sized dog: a chihuahua! Burger’s manageable size has made him an absolute breeze to travel with, whether it’s a road trip or a flight. He fits comfortably in a carrier under the seat, making him the ideal furry companion for all our adventures, proving that sometimes, compromise leads to the most perfect addition to the family.

Our Workout Routines & Staying Active

When it comes to working out, our approaches differ quite a bit! Sherry humorously admits that she only runs when being chased, as traditional workouts just aren’t her thing in the gym sense. However, she’s far from inactive! She goes on long, invigorating walks with Burger, exploring our neighborhood and enjoying the fresh air. More importantly, she bangs out all of those sweat-inducing home improvement projects – lifting, painting, sanding, and moving furniture are certainly forms of exercise that keep her incredibly fit and strong. As for me, I’m a dedicated runner. I make sure to carve out time for my runs during my lunch breaks, a perfect way to clear my head, re-energize, and stay active amidst a busy workday. It just goes to show that staying healthy and active can take many forms, whether it’s hitting the pavement or tackling a DIY renovation!
