Transforming Clara’s Room: DIY Curtains & A Dash of Kid-Approved Style
Creating a vibrant and functional space for a child is one of the most rewarding home decor projects. It’s an opportunity to blend playful elements with practical design, ensuring the room grows with them while reflecting their unique personality. Our latest adventure involved tackling the windows in Clara’s new room, a critical step in weaving together the diverse patterns and colors we envisioned. While some might opt for a neutral and simple approach, like breezy white curtains, especially when the bedding is a strong focal point, we had a different vision for Clara’s colorful haven.
We’ve always embraced layering patterns and colors in kid zones, believing they foster creativity and a sense of wonder. Instead of playing it safe, we decided to embark on a fabric treasure hunt with Clara herself leading the charge. Our destination? U-Fab, our favorite local fabric outlet here in Richmond. The goal was to find a fabric that not only complemented the existing daybed bedding but also introduced new elements to balance the room’s lively palette. And by “us,” I mean Clara, because ultimately, it’s her room, and her input is invaluable in making it truly hers.

Choosing the Perfect Fabric: A Child’s Eye for Design
The fabric selection process was nothing short of an adventure. Just like a moth drawn to a flame, Clara gravitated towards a particular design almost immediately. It was fascinating to watch her explore the myriad of options – from whimsical bright orange with large coral patterns to sophisticated dark purple plaids. Each fabric offered a different story, but one kept calling her name, a pattern she pointed to repeatedly with unwavering enthusiasm.

This chosen fabric wasn’t just beautiful; it was a strategic design stroke. It featured a captivating navy and white pattern that immediately resonated with our desire to introduce these colors into the room. We had been looking for elements to balance the existing abundance of pink and red, and this fabric offered the perfect solution. The navy would ground the space, adding depth and a touch of sophistication, while the white would maintain brightness and freshness. It was clear: Clara, in her innocent wisdom, had stumbled upon a decorating gem.
While we jokingly call Clara a decorating genius, the truth is that a vast array of fabric options can beautifully layer into a child’s room. The key is to find something that harmonizes rather than dominates. This particular fabric struck a delightful balance. We were especially charmed by its very subtle, almost blurry, chevron-ish pattern. The linear edges subtly echoed the design of her daybed blanket, creating an unexpected but welcome continuity in the room’s aesthetic. Furthermore, the price point was incredibly appealing, making this design dream a budget-friendly reality.

Our timing couldn’t have been better, as U-Fab was running a store-wide 20% off sale, further sweetening the deal on an already discounted price. In the end, we secured just over ten yards of this fantastic fabric, enough to create four extra-long curtain panels for Clara’s room. After the generous discount, each panel broke down to a mere $25, proving that custom, stylish decor doesn’t have to break the bank. This affordability allowed us the freedom to experiment and choose a fabric we truly loved, without compromise.

The DIY Curtain-Making Process: Simple Steps to Custom Style
With our chosen fabric in hand, the real work began once we were back home. The first order of business was to ensure Clara was tucked in for her nap. Any experienced parent knows that attempting precision tasks like measuring and cutting fabric with an active toddler around is an exercise in futility. With peace and quiet reigning, I rolled out my fabric bounty and began the straightforward process of transforming it into custom curtains.

Preparation & Precise Measurement
A crucial first step, often overlooked, is to wash your fabric *before* cutting and hemming. This pre-shrinks the material, preventing any unwelcome surprises after the first wash of your finished curtains. Once the fabric was prepped, my measuring method is quite simple yet effective. I determine the desired finished length of the curtain panels – for Clara’s room, we aimed for an elegant 89 inches high. To this finished length, I add two extra inches to account for the top and bottom hems. So, each of my four panels was initially cut to a length of 91 inches, which would then be hemmed down to the final 89 inches. This length might seem considerable, but I prefer hanging curtains on a rod with clip rings, which inherently add a little extra length to the overall hang. This allows the curtain rod to be mounted just a few inches below the ceiling, creating a sense of height and grandeur in the room. We intentionally left some extra space for future crown molding, ensuring our curtains would still look perfect after that upgrade. For the width, I utilize the full width of the fabric bolt. This not only significantly reduces cutting time but also ensures the curtains are as thick and full as possible, giving them a luxurious, custom appearance.
Cutting the Panels with Ease
To ensure consistency across all four panels, I employed a tried-and-true method: using the first perfectly measured and cut panel as a template. Once that initial panel was precise, I simply laid it on top of the remaining fabric and cut three more, identical in size. This method guarantees uniformity and saves time, eliminating the need for repetitive measurements. Before I knew it, I had four perfectly cut pieces of fabric, ready to be transformed into beautiful curtains for Clara’s room.

The Magic of No-Sew Hem Tape
Next up was hemming, and for this, I turned to my trusted no-sew hem-tape method, which I’ve detailed extensively in previous posts here and here. For over half a decade, I’ve relied on heavy-duty Heat N Bond, and its performance has been nothing short of amazing. Not only does it create incredibly durable hems that withstand the test of time, but it’s also washable, making it an incredibly practical solution, especially for a child’s room. Interestingly, despite having sewn curtains in the past myself, I find that hem-tape curtains often look crisper and straighter. Achieving a perfectly straight stitch with a sewing machine can be challenging, but following a hem tape line with an iron for a flawless, sharp hem is remarkably easy and yields professional-looking results. The clean lines achieved with this method truly elevate the finished product.

Expert Installation: Hanging Curtains Like a Pro
With the curtain panels perfectly hemmed, it was time to address the hardware. Luckily, we already had the curtain rods and ring clips on hand, having previously used them in the playroom. We had temporarily removed them to paint the room, making reinstallation straightforward. The key was to re-hang them at the ideal height to complement our freshly made, extra-long curtains. This is where John’s ingenious little tape trick comes into play, a simple yet incredibly effective tip for any DIY enthusiast. When drilling holes for mounting brackets, he folds a piece of painter’s tape just below the mark where the hole will be. This creates a small ledge that neatly catches all the drill dust and debris, saving a significant amount of cleanup time and keeping your walls pristine.

For those who appreciate the finer details and prioritize safety, especially in a child’s room, we always opt for sturdy plastic anchors. It’s vital to ensure curtain rods are held in place with more than just a few screws directly into drywall. This precaution is particularly important with children, as they might occasionally be tempted to tug or even hang on curtains. In our experience, with properly anchored rods, the fabric might slip out of the ring-clip’s “mouth” in such instances, rather than the entire rod crashing down, preventing potential accidents and damage. These anchors provide a robust foundation, giving us peace of mind that the curtains will stay securely in place, no matter what playful adventures Clara might embark on.

The Finished Look & Future Plans: Weaving a Cohesive Design
And just like that, with a little effort and a lot of love, Clara’s room gained a significant new layer of style. The curtains are up, and we couldn’t be happier with Clara’s choice. While they might appear black and white in some of these photographs, in person, they reveal their true, rich navy hue. This navy element is incredibly important to our overall design vision for the room. We have ambitious plans to integrate more navy throughout the space, creating a cohesive and well-balanced aesthetic. Imagine sleek navy picture frames adorning the walls, a plush navy pillow or two gracing the daybed, and perhaps even a stylish navy light fixture or an ottoman centered on the rug. These thoughtful additions will effectively “link” the curtains to the rug and the daybed, ensuring they don’t look like an isolated element but rather an integral part of a carefully curated design. We are incredibly excited to inch closer to a more finished look, despite my notorious impatience!

As the room continues its slow but steady evolution, I find myself savoring the smaller details that make a big difference. For instance, the curtains almost touch the floor but not quite. This subtle design choice not only helps keep them cleaner but also allows them to hang in a fuller, more elegant, and slightly loopier way, adding a touch of softness to the room. Here’s another invaluable hanging tip we’ve learned over the years: instead of guessing lengths and measurements on a bare rod, clip the rod rings to the fabric and then hold them up at different heights with someone’s help. This allows you to visually determine the perfect hanging height where the curtains drape beautifully. Mark that spot on the wall, and then hang your rod. This method prevents the dreaded “dorky short” or “too long” curtain dilemma and is far more exact than trying to calculate the length while accounting for the height of the ring hooks and the rod itself. It took us a few years to figure this out, but it has saved us from countless re-hangings after being off by an inch or two.

Even with these new additions, the room still feels delightfully empty, brimming with potential. That old ceiling fan, which practically pokes John in the eye, is definitely on the chopping block! But now, we can truly envision the next layers coming into place: our kids’ play table, perhaps a playful ottoman to break up the expanses of pink in the rug, and a curated collection of playful art to add visual balance and personality. The journey to a fully realized room is always an exciting one, and here’s our evolving to-do list:
