Transforming Your Bedroom: A Journey of Personal Style and Thoughtful Design
Our bedroom holds the esteemed title for the most frequently evolved space in our home. It’s a testament to our belief that a living space should never truly be “finished,” but rather, a dynamic canvas for personal expression. Over time, new elements are introduced, prompting us to reassess and refine. This iterative process has seen us remove the top bed rails, hang a distinctive ram art piece above the bed, swap out the duvet, and even reposition cherished horse artwork. This continuous cycle of trial and error is fundamental to our approach; after all, who truly gets every design detail perfect on the first attempt? If you do, we’d love for you to share your secrets!
We openly admit that our bedroom is perhaps one of our more unconventional spaces—it definitely isn’t designed to appeal to everyone. However, this suits us perfectly, as it’s our private sanctuary, not a public area for entertaining guests. Our core philosophy is to create a space that genuinely reflects *us*. As long as we find joy in it, there’s no pressure for others, whether it’s our mom or the neighbor next door, to fully understand our unique choices, like the striking dandelion-inspired chandelier or our beloved Señor Ram (who, incidentally, made his debut here, impressively performing yoga alongside Burger).

Interestingly, my mom recently surprised me by expressing genuine admiration for the entire room. This unexpected seal of approval might just be our cue to embark on an even more audacious design adventure soon! But on a more serious note, one of the most valuable lessons we’ve embraced over the years is the profound liberation that comes from making your home unequivocally “yours.” It’s about shedding the need to please every eye and instead, focusing purely on what you love. When you infuse your home with your authentic self, it transforms into a comforting embrace, welcoming you with open arms every time you step through the door.
The Catalyst for Change: Welcoming Our New Mid-Century Nightstands
This latest wave of bedroom refinements was predominantly inspired by the arrival of our new nightstands, items we had eagerly anticipated for quite some time. For over eight months, we had made do with living room side tables from our first home. While functional in a pinch, they presented several notable drawbacks. Critically, they were approximately five inches too low, making the simple act of reaching for a book or phone from bed quite uncomfortable. Moreover, their complete lack of drawers meant a constant struggle with clutter, creating an open invitation for our curious 15-month-old to grab and redistribute (or hide!) anything within reach. This setup was far from ideal for maintaining an organized and serene bedroom environment.

Our fortunes changed dramatically thanks to an incredible $11 yard sale find in Delaware, as previously shared here. These vintage gems finally brought two highly coveted features into our bedroom: a much-needed five-inch boost in height, positioning them perfectly within easy reach from the bed, and perhaps most importantly, glorious, functional drawers! These additions immediately addressed our primary concerns, offering both improved ergonomics and vital storage that helps keep bedside clutter neatly out of sight and, crucially, out of our toddler’s curious hands.

Of course, this side of our bedroom remains an ongoing project, currently only about 10% complete. Our previous bedroom took a leisurely four years to fully evolve into the beloved space we cherished upon moving. Our future plans for this area include adding a cabinet on the left wall to visually balance the door, introducing a longer and lighter bench at the foot of the bed, perhaps a vibrant colorful throw to add a pop of hue, and integrating smaller decorative objects on either side of the ram art to enhance visual interest and cohesion.

A Practical DIY Solution: Eliminating Musty Odors from Vintage Furniture
Before delving deeper into the design tweaks inspired by our new nightstands, allow me to take a brief, albeit crucial, tangent. It’s typical, I know, but this particular issue demands attention: our newly acquired mid-century side tables had an incredibly strong, musty odor. These pieces were genuine originals, so perhaps it wasn’t surprising that they carried the scent of six decades, or even more. The challenge was to eliminate this pervasive smell, and quickly. A quick search on Google led me to experiment with two distinct methods.
The first attempt involved wiping the tables down with a mild soap and water solution (specifically, Dr. Bronner’s). Unfortunately, this yielded absolutely no discernible improvement; the tables still smelled strongly of a damp, moldy rug. Undeterred, I moved on to the second method: wiping them down thoroughly with undiluted white vinegar. The results were nothing short of miraculous! It worked like an absolute charm. I simply used a rag to rub every surface, inside and out, with vinegar. Initially, the strong vinegar scent, reminiscent of salty potato chips, was quite potent. However, as the vinegar dried, the unpleasant odor completely vanished. Seriously, the tables transformed from having a musty stench that hit you upon entering the room, to being entirely odorless, even when placing your nose directly into a drawer for a deep whiff. This is a game-changer for anyone dealing with vintage furniture. So, if your drawers (the furniture kind, not your undergarments, to be clear!) carry an unwelcome scent, I highly recommend giving this simple vinegar trick a try.
Harmonizing the Bedside: Pillows, Posts, and Art Elevation
Returning to the nightstand-inspired transformations, let’s revisit the wide shot of our still-evolving bedroom side. You might notice the pillows, playfully arranged in both horizontal and vertical directions, just for fun. Because sometimes, a little creative chaos is exactly what’s needed!

Ah, and now they’re embracing their veeeertical orientation…

Beyond the playful pillow rotation, have you noticed any other subtle yet impactful adjustments? The sleek lines and elevated height of our new mid-century nightstands sparked another brilliant idea. We were inspired to remove the finials we had previously added to “Ed the bed.” Instead, we opted for a more temporary and contrasting accent, a concept initially suggested by Bryn a while back (she had linked to a picture found here that we absolutely loved). This idea involves highlighting the bedposts in a non-permanent way.
Meet Ed, our beloved bed. Now, he boasts some handsome, contrasting post tops. But rather than resorting to a permanent solution like paint, I decided to utilize something readily available, free, and completely removable: ribbon. I discovered a suitable greeny-gold ribbon tucked away in my small gift closet, a collection of bags and bows often earmarked for regifting. This particular hue resonated perfectly with our existing curtains, promising a cohesive look. I carefully cut four small pieces from a long strand—likely one that had adorned a large gift box last December—and secured them at the seam using regular Scotch tape. To ensure a clean finish, I positioned the taped seams facing inconspicuous areas, such as the wall behind the bed, making them virtually invisible.

To enhance their security and ensure they stayed perfectly in place, I meticulously wrapped the tape up and over the very top of each bedpost. This clever little trick made certain the ribbon accents were firmly anchored from both the side and the top, preventing any slippage and maintaining their pristine appearance.

Have you spotted any other subtle refinements? The artwork, a crucial element in establishing the room’s character, has finally been raised. This adjustment was made possible by the increased height of our new nightstands. We deliberately held off on permanently hanging the art until these new tables were in place, ensuring we could determine the optimal height without creating numerous unnecessary holes in the wall during the decision-making process. Initially, we considered aligning the art with Sir Ram, our distinctive wall-mounted piece. However, after experimenting with various placements, we found this current position to be the most aesthetically pleasing. This particular placement likely works best because it forms a dynamic visual triangle with the prominent chandelier, with Sir Ram confidently grounding the base of this powerful design element.
Additionally, we invested in new lampshades from Target, priced at a reasonable $19 each (with an extra 5% off thanks to our Target card, a perk we absolutely adore!). Our previous lampshades were beginning to show signs of wear and tear, looking a little dingy. The slightly wider silhouette of these new shades instantly captivated us. In fact, they bear an uncanny resemblance, if not an exact match, to a shade we purchased back in 2009 for our basement makeover, which you can see here. It’s amazing how a seemingly small change like a lampshade can refresh and elevate the entire feel of a bedside arrangement.

The Foundation of Comfort: A Neutral Duvet and Future Color Pops
Oh, and it almost slipped my mind! We finally put the Ikea duvet, which we had previously mentioned purchasing here, onto the bed. We received an overwhelming number of positive testimonials from many of you who owned the same duvet and absolutely loved it. And to our delight, we wholeheartedly agree! It possesses an almost magical ability to remain pristine, even with the presence of a baby and a dog, and its comfort level is akin to snuggling into a giant, soft cloud. We particularly appreciate its calm and understated aesthetic. This neutral base allows other curated elements to truly shine—pieces like our Alaska berry prints, the horse art, my unique paint chip creation, the grand mirror over the sink nook, and the impressive chandelier all serve as focal points, adding texture, intrigue, and color in their own distinctive ways. Despite this, we are still contemplating introducing a vibrant pop of color at the foot of the bed, possibly in the form of a cozy throw. Alternatively, we might consider building or upholstering a longer, lighter bench with a touch of color. The possibilities are truly endless, perhaps even extending to a subtle hue on the ceiling!
The Ever-Evolving Sanctuary: Envisioning Future Transformations
I am confidently banking on at least 50 more “tweaks” over the coming years as this room gradually reaches its full potential. For someone like me, this prospect is incredibly exciting, almost titillating. Seriously, this continuous evolution is my idea of a genuinely good time. To give you a glimpse into our creative process, here’s a little Photoshop fun. Imagine a bright, inviting throw blanket draped across the bed, paired with a plush, soft plum-colored bench, all beneath a sophisticated, moody greeny-gold ceiling. The combination could be absolutely captivating and offer a rich, layered aesthetic…

Oh, who am I kidding? We’ll undoubtedly change our minds a million more times before anything is final (and yes, it looks a bit wild because it’s a digital mockup!). But that’s precisely part of the fun—the anticipation of seeing where our creative journey ultimately leads us. Our bedroom isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s a living, breathing project, continually refined to perfectly suit our evolving tastes and needs. It embodies the joy of personalizing a home, making it a true reflection of who we are, one thoughtful detail at a time.
Are you currently undertaking any exciting tweaks in your own bedroom? We’d love to hear all about them, but let’s keep the details family-friendly, as my mom is likely reading along (and probably still admiring Sir Ram!).
