• It Doesn’t Need a Window Covering: This type of floating shelf works best on windows that do not require any internal window treatments. Blinds, roller shades, Roman shades, or curtains would inevitably interfere with the shelf’s placement and the plants themselves. Our bathroom window offers ample privacy thanks to its frosted glass, eliminating the need for any coverings. This is a surprisingly easy and effective project that we’ve successfully implemented in many of our previous homes.
• It Is Not an Egress Window (and allows opening): Egress windows are essential escape routes, particularly in bedrooms and basements. Since our shelf is in a bathroom, egress requirements are typically not applicable. While butcher block offers superior strength and a beautiful finish, it can be quite costly to purchase specifically for this shelf. A more budget-friendly and equally effective alternative would be a sturdy 2×4″ board, or a high-quality 1-inch thick solid wood board. When selecting your wood, consider the interior span of your window (ours measures 28 inches). For wider spans, a thicker or more rigid material is preferable to prevent any noticeable sagging over time, especially if you plan to display heavier plant pots.

The inherent sturdiness of the butcher block meant we only needed minimal support to hold it in place. Our goal was a clean, minimalist look, so large, visible brackets were out of the question. This led us to our elegant solution: utilizing low-profile cove molding. This type of trim blends seamlessly with existing window casings, almost disappearing and creating the sophisticated illusion of a truly floating wood shelf. It’s a subtle yet incredibly effective design choice that truly elevates the project’s finish.

1. Cut Your Wood Shelf to Size: Begin by precisely measuring the internal width of your window frame where the shelf will sit. Our shelf measured 4 inches deep by 28 inches wide. Use your chosen saw (circular, miter, or table saw) to cut your main wooden board to these dimensions. Remember the old adage: measure twice, cut once! If you’re having your board pre-cut at a hardware store, ensure you provide accurate measurements.
2. Cut Two Pieces of Cove Molding: Next, cut two pieces of cove molding (or quarter-round) to the exact depth of your window trim. For our project, this was 4 inches. These pieces will serve as the discreet supports for your shelf, so accuracy here is key for a flush appearance.
3. Measure & Mark Desired Placement: Decide on the ideal height for your shelf. Consider factors like plant height, aesthetic balance, and ease of access. Using your measuring tape and pencil, carefully mark the desired bottom placement of your shelf on each side of your window trim. Use a level to ensure these marks are perfectly aligned horizontally.
4. Nail the Cove Molding into the Window Trim: Position one piece of cut cove molding along your pencil mark on one side of the window trim. Using a nail gun with 1.5-inch finish nails (or a hammer and finish nails), secure the molding piece firmly to the trim. Repeat this process for the second piece of molding on the opposite side. It is absolutely crucial to use your level during this step to ensure both molding pieces are perfectly horizontal and parallel. Any slight slope will be noticeable once the shelf is in place.
5. Add Your Wood Shelf and Check for Level: Carefully place your pre-cut wooden shelf on top of the two installed cove molding supports. Once it’s resting in place, use your level again to confirm that the shelf itself is perfectly horizontal from front to back and side to side. Make any minor adjustments as needed before proceeding.
6. Nail Your Shelf to the Cove Molding: To permanently secure the shelf, use your nail gun (or hammer) to attach the wooden shelf to the cove molding supports. We found it easiest and most discreet to nail upwards from the underside of the molding into the shelf. Use a few nails on each side for robust support. As noted earlier, we opted for simple finish nails to allow for easy removal in an emergency, if needed.
7. Caulk Nail Holes and Paint Them: For a truly professional and seamless “floating” finish, apply paintable caulk to fill any visible nail holes and any small gaps where the molding meets the window trim. Once the caulk is dry, paint over it and the cove molding with paint that perfectly matches your existing window trim. This final step helps the supports visually disappear, leaving you with a beautifully integrated plant shelf.

As you can see, the nails we used were relatively small 1.5-inch finish nails, perfectly adequate for the lightweight nature of the shelf and its contents. While you might spot the faint divots where the nails were placed in the close-up (a reminder that even DIY experts sometimes need a second coat of caulk!), the overall effect is one of seamless integration and stability. This project truly embodies a quick, simple DIY that yields significant aesthetic rewards. It was a spontaneous idea, utilizing leftover materials, and the result exceeded our expectations.
