Elevate Your Entertainment

Have you ever found yourself squinting at your television, struggling to decipher subtitles or catch a fleeting news ticker? For far too long, that was our reality. Our humble 26-inch television, a relic from a previous home, felt increasingly inadequate in our current living space. While it made perfect sense in our old, cozy den, where I could practically change the channel with my toe due to its narrow confines, our new living room presented a different challenge entirely.

Old small television in a living room

Our current living room offers significantly more space, providing ample room for our daughter, Clara, to play and explore. While we sometimes miss the intimate charm of our first living room, the extra square footage for family activities is a welcome trade-off. However, this spaciousness only amplified the shortcomings of our tiny TV. The recurring phrase, “We really need a bigger TV,” became a household mantra, uttered almost every time a new show started, a critical subtitle appeared, or friends gathered for a movie night. The struggle to read on-screen text without physically standing up and walking halfway across the room became a constant source of mild frustration.

Despite the obvious need, upgrading our television had been one of those home improvement tasks we continuously pushed to the back burner. It’s quite surprising, given how much we enjoy watching TV as a family. However, a valuable tip changed our procrastination habits: February and March are reportedly the sweet spot for TV purchases. This post-Christmas, post-Super Bowl period is considered the television industry’s slow season. With lower consumer demand, retailers often slash prices to clear inventory, presenting an excellent opportunity for savvy shoppers.

Armed with this insider knowledge, we patiently waited for the opportune moment to make our move. The research phase began, a thorough investigation into the vast world of modern televisions. We consulted online reviews, scoured tech blogs, and engaged in insightful discussions with my brother-in-law, Martin, who had recently undergone his own rigorous TV buying journey. His experience proved invaluable, offering practical advice and dispelling common myths. After meticulous price checking and feature comparisons, our search led us to two compelling options: a Vizio and a Samsung model, both conveniently available at Target.

Two televisions side-by-side on display at Target

Both contenders were LCD televisions, offering crisp 1080p resolution, and hovering around the ideal 40-inch mark. This size wasn’t arbitrary; it was the result of holding a tape measure against our living room wall and envisioning a display that felt substantial without overwhelming the space. We sought a significant upgrade without venturing into “crazy-big” territory. A crucial factor in our decision-making was energy efficiency. Both models were “eco” versions, costing an incredibly low $17 per year to run, placing them very high on the energy savings scale. For context, the lowest annual cost we encountered during our research was $15 for an LED model, but that particular unit came with a price tag double that of our chosen options. Furthermore, both the Vizio and Samsung boasted stellar 4+ star reviews across major retail platforms like Target, Amazon, and Walmart, reinforcing their quality and reliability.

So, which one did we ultimately choose in our quest for a superior home entertainment experience? Considering all factors, we opted for the Vizio. It was not only 2 inches larger than the Samsung but also a compelling $100 cheaper at its initial listed price. However, the $449.99 sticker price was far from our final cost. As seasoned coupon clippers and deal hunters, we leveraged a series of strategic discounts to maximize our savings.

Our decision to purchase from Target was a multi-layered one, driven by several stacked savings opportunities:

  • Firstly, the Vizio was already benefiting from a temporary price reduction, dropping its cost from $479 to $449. This initial markdown provided a solid foundation for further discounts.
  • Secondly, as proud holders of a Target credit card, we received an immediate 5% discount on the entire purchase. This brought the price down further to a more appealing $427, a standard perk for cardholders.
  • The real game-changer came in the form of an unexpected but highly appreciated “additional 5% off all HDTVs” coupon from Target. This bonus coupon, which we suspect is occasionally sent to loyal Target cardholders, stacked on top of our existing 5% card discount, reducing the price to an incredible $406.
  • Finally, we strategically applied a couple of leftover Christmas gift cards we had been saving for a significant purchase. This brought our final, out-of-pocket expenditure for the brand-new, larger television to an astonishing $356.

To put that into perspective, we had purchased our much smaller, outdated television five years prior for roughly the same price. This made our current upgrade feel not just like a necessity but a triumphant act of smart shopping. The old TV, having served us well, will likely find a new home in another room or be given a second life via Craigslist. After 15 months of enduring our too-small screen, patiently saving, and diligently stalking sales, we finally brought our new entertainment centerpiece home. The excitement was palpable, even for our furry friend, Burger. However, his initial enthusiasm was met with a rather bland introductory graphic: a news anchor. Seriously, Vizio? Couldn’t we have been greeted by something a little more captivating? A vibrant underwater scene teeming with colorful fish and coral, perhaps? Or even the dynamic imagery of a charging bull or a galloping horse to convey a sense of speed and excitement? It was a minor quibble, quickly forgotten once the TV was set up.

Before fully integrating the new Vizio into our living room, we wanted to visually document the scale of the upgrade. It’s one thing to talk about a bigger TV, but quite another to see the stark contrast. Below is a picture of our old television, highlighting its diminutive stature.

Ridiculous, isn’t it? While the picture itself is a small representation of a small TV, it effectively conveys the point. The visual impact of its size, or lack thereof, truly hit home when we placed the new Vizio alongside it for a direct comparison. Instantly, the living room felt more balanced, and the promise of an enhanced viewing experience began to materialize. It also became clear that our existing media console would soon need an upgrade of its own. We’re already brainstorming ideas, either to build something custom from scratch or to repurpose a unique find from a thrift store. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on that project.

And here’s the most satisfying view: from the comfort of our couch with the new television proudly displaying its vibrant picture. Look closely – you can now clearly discern that we were watching an episode of “Cougar Town”! Every letter, every detail, is perfectly legible. This isn’t a life-sized photograph, of course; it’s a picture of a TV across a room. But in person, the difference is monumental. Reading small text, like those previously elusive subtitles, is now an effortless task, a true relief for our long-suffering eyes. Gone are the days of squinting and straining.

For immediate safety and stability, we’ve securely tethered the television to the wall using the wire, screw, and heavy-duty anchor provided in the box. While we eventually plan to mount it on the wall for a cleaner, more integrated look, we first need to assess the wall structure and determine the optimal height and placement. This temporary measure ensures the TV won’t accidentally tip over, providing peace of mind, especially with a curious toddler running around. The process of upgrading a TV often reveals other areas of the home that could benefit from a refresh, and our media area is certainly one of them.

This television upgrade is hopefully just the beginning of a broader revitalization of our living room’s entertainment zone. We firmly believe this larger TV friend deserves a more substantial and functional piece of furniture to anchor it – something with increased storage capacity and a bit more height to complement the screen’s presence. But for now, we are simply relishing the break we’ve given our squinting muscles and enjoying the immersive return of shows like “The Cul De Sac Crew” into our lives. It’s amazing how much a simple upgrade can enhance daily enjoyment and family time.
