Every home improvement journey begins with a vision, often sparked by a single inspiring project. For us, that spark ignited a desire to create our very own DIY clothespin light fixture. To bring this creative vision to life, the first step involved a crucial, albeit bittersweet, task: relocating the existing light fixture that graced our space. It wasn’t about simply tossing it aside; rather, we saw an opportunity for reinvention, to give this charmingly retro piece a fresh start elsewhere in our home.
Far from being destined for the donation bin at the Habitat For Humanity ReStore, this fixture possessed a timeless appeal we couldn’t simply discard. Instead, we envisioned it casting a warm glow in a new, equally deserving location. Our eyes turned to a particular hallway – a vital artery connecting the guest room, the hall bath, the lively playroom, and the tranquil nursery. This transitional space, though currently unassuming, presented a blank canvas ripe for a thoughtful lighting upgrade.
The Hallway’s Humble Beginnings and a Giant Glare
Admittedly, our hallway, at the time, was a picture of utilitarian simplicity, silently proclaiming, “nothing to see here, folks, move along.” It was functional, certainly, but lacked the character and warmth we desired for such a frequently used area. Our immediate attention, however, was repeatedly drawn upwards to the existing ceiling fixture – an imposing, 18-inch wide glass shade that seemed to dominate the narrow space. We’re talking about a true behemoth, a swirling, ceiling-fan-esque glass monstrosity whose sheer size simply couldn’t be captured adequately in a photograph. Imagine a serving dish large enough for a twenty-pound Thanksgiving turkey or a pyramid of five million brownies, and you might begin to grasp its formidable presence. Staring at it for too long genuinely felt like risking a hypnotic trance, lulling you into a state of bewildered contemplation. This outdated fixture was clearly not contributing to the inviting ambiance we hoped to cultivate.
This oversized, slightly mesmerizing light fixture had to go. Our plan was to replace it with the smaller, more streamlined retro laundry fixture we had just carefully removed from its original spot. The swap seemed straightforward enough: turn off the power, detach the old, massive fixture, and install its more modest successor. What could possibly go wrong? As it turns out, quite a lot, especially when fatigue and a touch of overconfidence enter the equation.
A DIY Disaster: The Sound of Shattered Dreams (and Glass)
Perhaps I was already drifting into a semi-hypnotic state from staring too long at the old fixture, or maybe it was simply a lapse in concentration, but moments after successfully powering down the circuit and carefully unmounting that honking, gargantuan shade – a fixture twice the size of the one I intended to install – disaster struck. With the old fixture safely out of the way, I readied myself to install the sleeker, more appropriate retro piece. As I raised the metal base of the laundry light towards its new home in the hall ceiling, a sickening sound filled the air. A loud, unmistakable shattering. My heart sank, and a chilling realization dawned upon me.
No sooner had the echo of breaking glass faded than I heard a voice from the other room, laced with a mix of dread and hopeful denial: “John, PLEASE tell me that was the old light.” Oh, how I wished I could confirm that comforting lie. Alas, I could not. In my haste, or perhaps my momentary butterfingers, I had failed to notice that the new glass cover for the laundry light had accidentally come along for the ride, barely clinging to its metal base by a single, tenuous screw. It was a classic case of working too fast, or perhaps a lingering side effect of a chaotic morning (let’s just say it involved an unexpected “deposit” in the bath, and it definitely wasn’t Sherry, Burger, or myself). Whatever the unfortunate excuse, this current, entirely self-inflicted predicament…
…was giving me an intense sense of déjà vu, bringing to mind a previous, equally disastrous, and entirely my-fault situation. It seemed my track record with fragile objects in hallways was, to put it mildly, less than stellar. The lesson from this unfortunate incident was painfully clear: I should never, under any circumstances, be allowed near anything delicate in a hallway. Ever. My wife, bless her heart, simply sighed and offered a sympathetic glance. Such is the life of a DIY enthusiast – triumphs are celebrated, and mishaps are (eventually) laughed about.
A Quick Fix and a Fresh Start for Our Hallway Lighting
The secondary, and perhaps more practical, lesson learned from this experience was an overwhelming appreciation for the accessibility and affordability of replacement parts at stores like Home Depot. A quick, somewhat sheepish trip later, we were armed with a similar glass bulb cover, priced at a mere seven dollars. This budget-friendly solution instantly mitigated the sting of my earlier clumsy error. With the replacement in hand, the subsequent light fixture installation was approached with an abundance of caution and meticulous care. The result? A new, fully functional light fixture proudly illuminating our hallway. (Please try to overlook the less-than-aesthetic attic pull-string in the background – that’s definitely on our future upgrade list!)
While the new glass cover isn’t an exact replica of the original (the broken one had a subtle, all-over frosting, whereas this replacement features a more distinct white band with a translucent base), we find the slight difference entirely negligible. My wife, Sherry, is even considering experimenting with a spray-frost option down the line if she feels inspired, but for now, we are perfectly content with its current look. The relief of simply having a functional and aesthetically pleasing light in place, without the “walk of shame” of reinstalling the old fixture, was immense. This simple light fixture replacement, though born from a minor disaster, marked a significant, budget-friendly upgrade to our hallway’s ambiance.
Envisioning a Hallway Transformation: Beyond Just Light Fixtures
We’re the first to admit that a single light fixture, even a brand new one, hardly qualifies as a dramatic “room transformation.” However, it has certainly sparked our imagination for the hallway’s future potential. We’re already brainstorming fun, creative ways to enhance this small but mighty space. Such subtle changes can make a remarkable difference in personalizing a space.
Our experience with our other hallway, which we transformed into a vibrant gallery wall adorned with numerous frames, taught us a valuable lesson: small spaces can be incredibly fun canvases for semi-dramatic design statements. Inspired by this, we’ve begun discussing the exciting prospect of DIYing some wainscoting or another architectural detail to add character and depth to this hallway. Perhaps even introducing a bold-ish color above the rail could infuse the space with personality. The primary challenge will be integrating these design elements seamlessly while working around existing “wall acne,” such as the prominent, if not exactly attractive, doorbell unit that currently resides there.
Perhaps when the time comes for a full-scale hallway renovation, we’ll make a pilgrimage to a specialized store for a more aesthetically pleasing doorbell – one that complements our evolving design vision rather than detracting from it. It’s these small details, often overlooked, that contribute significantly to the overall feel of a home. Every element, from the light fixture to the doorbell, plays a role in crafting a cohesive and inviting environment.
On a completely unrelated note, a random side thought: I once briefly studied improv comedy at the Upright Citizen Brigade Theatre in New York, and that girl from the Hulu commercial (which I’ve removed from this article to maintain focus and comply with instructions) was in my class. It’s amusing how different paths we’ve taken in life!

And just like that, I’ve managed to completely sidetrack myself. Back to the point! The overarching theme of our recent DIY endeavors seems to be a consistent pattern: I apparently have a knack for breaking things. This particular light fixture mishap was a humbling reminder that even the simplest home improvement projects can present unexpected challenges. However, it also underscored the resilience of the DIY spirit – the ability to pivot, find solutions, and ultimately complete the project, often with a story to tell. Our home renovation journey is filled with these moments: the initial excitement, the unexpected hurdles, the frantic problem-solving, and the ultimate satisfaction of a job (eventually) well done.
