How to Choose the Right Granite Countertops for Your Home

At a recent open house, our suspicion that a last-minute countertop change saved the look of our kitchen was confirmed when we saw a kitchen fitted with Blanc Noir granite — the very style we almost chose.

We did initially pick Blanc Noir based on small samples from the store. However, once we viewed full slabs at the stone yard, we switched to Pashmina at the last minute. Seeing that open house kitchen made us completely certain we’d made the right decision. For comparison, here is the granite countertop we ultimately installed: Pashmina.

Our concerns about Blanc Noir being too busy were confirmed. The pattern read spotty and high-contrast from a distance, which felt visually noisy for our kitchen. Pashmina, on the other hand, offered a softer, veiny appearance with a marble-like elegance. It was slightly pricier, but the more refined, high-end look justified the extra cost.

One clear takeaway from our experience: never rely solely on tiny samples when choosing stone. Small swatches can make different slabs look similar, but full slabs reveal the true scale, contrast and movement of the pattern. If you’re in the market for countertops, be sure to inspect large slabs at the stone yard before making a final decision — it can completely change your perspective.
