Here’s a simple, affordable fan makeover anyone can do. We updated a plain white ceiling fan in the den by replacing its dated glass bulb cover with a lamp shade. The only requirement for the shade is a metal interior loop that fits around the bulb—without that loop there’s no way to hang the shade from the fan’s bulb.
When choosing a shade, consider size and proportion and confirm it has the interior loop for hanging. Avoid overly tapered shades; a shade that’s only slightly wider at the bottom reads more modern and streamlined than a large, triangular sloped shade. To install, remove the fan’s old glass cover and unscrew the bulb. Thread the shade’s metal loop over the bulb, then screw the bulb back into the socket so the loop sits securely and the shade is supported by the bulb.
Here’s a quick before shot to show the original setup:

And here’s the after:

This update took about five minutes once we found the right shade. It’s a quick, low-cost way to elevate a room’s look without major changes—perfect for an easy weekend refresh. If you prefer a brighter room, choose a lighter fabric shade or a higher-lumen bulb; for a softer, cozier glow, pick a warmer bulb or a shade with a denser fabric.
Tips for a safe, successful swap:
- Turn off the fan and power before removing the glass cover or bulb.
- Confirm the shade’s loop fits securely around the bulb and that the bulb type and wattage are compatible with the fan fixture.
- Use a sturdy bulb and check that the shade is balanced to avoid wobble while the fan runs.
- If your fan has a pull chain or a low-clearance fixture, double-check that the shade won’t interfere with operation.
It’s an inexpensive, reversible change that updates the fan’s style without replacing the whole fixture—ideal if you want a polished look with minimal effort.
