Join Us for a Guided Walk Around the House

We’re getting video-happy again. It’s time for another house tour — it’s been about six months since the last one and a lot has changed. So here it is: ten lively minutes of John and me walking through the house while I talk and he films (John = steady hands, Sherry = the chatty one). We’re far from pros, but we have fun. Come on in and walk around with us.

A few notes about the video:

  • I’ve listened to the clip several times trying to hear Natalie Portman or Mila Kunis (since many of you say you can hear them), but I still can’t pick it out.
  • We filmed this with our new camera; we’ll share more about it soon. The audio still needs some tweaking — we’re learning as we go.
  • John teased me for acting clueless about how our dog gets into a chair (at 33 seconds), joking “does he jump? does he fly?” which made me laugh out loud. Burger’s chair entrances always seem to happen by magic.
  • Watching the house on video gives me fresh perspective. For instance, seeing the view from the office into the dining room makes me want to raise the artwork about six inches above the buffet so the composition breathes a bit more while still connecting to what’s below it.
  • My voice volume fluctuates because I was trying to stay the same distance from the camera John was holding. I tend to flail when I talk, so staying glued to him helped but didn’t eliminate the changes.
  • You can catch John and me in the mirror at our master sink nook at 5:53 — our dorky video-making moment captured on camera.
  • Drinking game idea: take a sip every time I say “secret book projects.”
  • Those brass doorknobs are driving me crazy — like kryptonite through the screen. They’re on the list to fix.
  • When I say at 9:13 that Clara’s room will remain a nursery, I don’t mean she’ll be in a crib forever. I mean she’ll move into the playroom as her big-girl room, and if we have another child in the future, the smaller room will be used for a crib since it’s better suited for that purpose.
  • The ending was pretty dorky and embarrassing — I was recovering from a stomach bug and said, “all you need is love?” Charming, right? Maybe I should stick with “Seacrest, out.”
  • I seem to get sick before each video tour. Maybe there’s something primal about deep-cleaning while recovering from a bug and then deciding it’s the perfect time to film the house.

For comparison, here’s the previous video tour we shared six months ago — it’s fun to see how much has changed and how our filming skills have improved (the earlier video has a lot more camera shake because I didn’t recruit John’s steady hands). Videos really do capture the feel of a space in ways still photos don’t. Do you ever videotape your house to document changes or accomplishments? Does your filming look Blair-Witch-ish because of flail-y hands? Would your partner hold the camera while you chat? John definitely deserves credit for carrying the camera while I jabber on — maybe a handmade award from my flail-y hands is in order. If you’re watching the most recent video and wondering what’s still on our to-do list, our somewhat updated list covers everything we’re planning to tackle. Hootie hoo! Seacrest, out.

Psst — check out our other house tour videos since we moved in: previous tours document our progress and give a fuller picture of how rooms have evolved. Viva la video camera!
