Kids’ Keepsake Frames: Outfits & Playful Hooks

Welcome to a journey where cherished memories meet creative home decor! Every home has those special items that tell a story, pieces gifted with love or collected on an adventure. For us, one such treasure is a vibrant, handcrafted Peruvian poncho, a gift from my incredible sister-in-law, Ali. This adorable piece, with its intricate patterns and warm hues, quickly became a staple in our daughter Clara’s wardrobe a few years ago. We practically counted down the days until she was big enough to wear it, and wear it she did! It received so much love and even made a cameo on the cover of a local magazine, perfectly capturing the festive holiday spirit they aimed for. But as all parents know, children grow at an astonishing rate, and our little Clara is no exception. The poncho, once a perfect fit, is now a tad too small.

While the thought of her outgrowing such a beloved item might typically bring a pang of sadness, I’ve been diligently planning “Phase 2,” or as I like to call it, “Operation Keep This Poncho Forever.” The idea? To transform this wearable memory into a permanent piece of art for her room. Preserving sentimental items like this not only honors their origin but also creates unique, meaningful decor that adds layers of personality to any space. It’s about more than just a poncho; it’s about encapsulating a moment, a gift, and a cherished phase of childhood.

From Wearable to Wall Art: Preserving Memories in a DIY Display Frame

The first step in our mission to immortalize Clara’s Peruvian poncho involved finding the perfect display solution. Serendipitously, about a year and a half ago, we inherited an acrylic photo frame from John’s mom. She and John’s dad were clearing out their closets, and this frame, complete with some ancient art from John’s grade school days, found its way into our home. For over 450 days, it had been idly hanging out in our rather chaotic playroom, waiting for its true calling. I must admit, I felt a slight pang of guilt for its prolonged idleness, but fate had a grander plan in store.

From the moment John’s mom handed it over, I knew this frame held immense potential. John, ever the comedian, immediately declared, “Never do I ever want to see that painting on the wall!” His comment solidified my conviction: this frame was destined for a new, more glorious purpose – to beautifully memorialize Clara’s special Peruvian Poncho from her Aunt Ali. This acrylic box frame, with its simple yet elegant design, was ideal for showcasing a three-dimensional item like the poncho, offering protection while allowing its beauty to shine through.

Before beginning the transformation, John and I took a moment to appreciate his fourth-grade masterpiece. We “oohed” and “aahed” over the nostalgic art, laughing at the details on the tag. John recalled that the assignment was to paint something in nature, which explains his vibrant creation entitled “The Sunrise Flower.” It was a fun trip down memory lane, a momentary farewell to its original purpose before it embarked on its new journey.

The first practical step was to carefully slide off the acrylic top of the frame. These types of acrylic box frames are still quite popular and can often be found at craft stores like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby, making them accessible for anyone inspired to try a similar project. Once the top was removed, I flipped John’s art over. To my pleasant surprise, the back of the construction paper, a faded old charcoal gray, was absolutely perfect. It provided a sophisticated, neutral backdrop that beautifully complemented the poncho’s rich colors. Even better, it subtly tied into the navy curtains in Clara’s room, layering another dark neutral tone over the lighter, brighter rug and bed linens. This serendipitous discovery meant I didn’t need to hunt for decorative paper or fabric, which had been my backup plan if the original backing proved unsuitable. I truly loved the understated elegance of the paper; it allowed the poncho to be the undisputed star of the show without any visual competition.

While not visible in every photo, the frame’s structure is quite simple. It’s essentially a white cardboard box that snugly slides into the acrylic front. Small holes on the back of the cardboard box allow for easy wall hanging, and its lightweight nature is a definite bonus. However, after years of use and storage, the sides of the frame had definitely seen better days – they were scuffed and scratched, detracting from its overall appearance. To give it a fresh, clean look without a major overhaul, I grabbed some trusty white duct tape. I carefully folded the tape around each side of the cardboard box, creating a crisp, finished edge that instantly hid all the imperfections. This simple trick transformed the aged frame, making it look pristine and ready for its new life as a cherished display piece, reflecting decades of history in a renewed aesthetic.

With the background chosen and the frame refurbished, the next step was to carefully position the poncho. I laid the charcoal paper on top of the newly taped cardboard box and then gently placed the poncho right in the center. The goal was to display it in a way that highlighted its unique pattern and fringe, allowing it to rest naturally within the frame’s dimensions. This stage is crucial, as the final presentation relies heavily on careful arrangement to achieve a balanced and aesthetically pleasing result. Consider how the item’s features, like fringe or embellishments, will lay and appear once enclosed.

The final step required a delicate touch: slowly sliding the acrylic front back into place. The frame is designed to be snug enough to hold the contents securely on its own, eliminating the need to tape down the poncho or the acrylic front. The key adjective here is “slowly.” I learned this the hard way during my first attempt; quickly pushing the top down caused the poncho’s delicate fringe to blow out and become disheveled, making it look as if it were caught in a mini-cyclone! After a quick fix – removing the front, gently brushing the fringe back down with my fingers – I re-attempted the process, moving much, much slower. This patience paid off, allowing the acrylic front to slide smoothly into position without disturbing the poncho’s perfectly arranged folds and fringe. Success! This careful approach ensures your cherished item is beautifully preserved without any mishaps.

Finding Its Place: Displaying the Framed Poncho in Clara’s Room

For now, our beautifully framed Peruvian poncho hangs proudly above Clara’s play kitchen, to the right of the wall featuring her postcard shelves. We’re still contemplating whether it will remain there as a singular piece of art. Sometimes it looks perfectly scaled and creates a simple, charming focal point on that small wall. Other times, we wonder if it might feel a little too small all by itself. Decorating a child’s room is an evolving process, and we’re always open to adjusting and enhancing the space as Clara grows and her preferences change. We promise to keep you updated on its final placement! In fact, we’ve already added a little something else that looks even more delightful alongside the poncho, and we can’t wait to share those pictures with you soon!

Please forgive the somewhat lackluster quality of some of the photos. The reflections in the acrylic were particularly challenging to capture well, making many of the closer shots less than ideal. In person, the poncho’s vibrant colors truly pop, and you don’t encounter the distracting reflections that photographs often pick up. If you refer back to the first image, that’s a much truer representation of its real-life vibrancy. It plays beautifully off some of the green tones in the flash cards on nearby shelves and even complements the frame collage art and our new Katie Daisy print on the opposite side of the room, weaving a cohesive color story throughout Clara’s space.

Adding Character with Playful Hooks: “Playing Hooky” in Clara’s Room

Now that we’ve delved into the story and transformation of the Peruvian poncho, let’s talk about the “playing hooky” part of our title! Cast your eyes to the right of the closet door in Clara’s room. See those charming hooks hanging there? They’re more than just functional; they’re another layer of personal history and whimsy in her delightful space.

Let’s take a closer look at these delightful additions.

These aren’t just any hooks; they’re Anthropologie hooks, gifted to us by our incredibly sweet friends, Jesse and her husband Rick, in Cincinnati. This thoughtful gesture occurred during our book tour, specifically when we house crashed them. By the time we met for a signing, we were already old friends, and they so generously thrust these into our hands, exclaiming, “We thought Clara would love them so much!” Their thoughtfulness truly touched us. The moment I saw the elephant and the giraffe, I knew they were absolutely right. Clara would adore them, and they would be a fantastic, whimsical addition to her “big girl” room.

And her reaction? Let’s just say that my daughter might just surpass me in her love for ceramic animals! She is utterly obsessed with them. Her immediate connection was heartwarming, and she even gave them special names. Meet “Manna,” the wise and wonderful elephant.

And then there’s “Bamma,” the graceful giraffe. Yes, those are their charming names! Manna, the elephant, is incredibly versatile and currently holds almost anything we put on her – stretchy necklaces, belts, and even a paint deck that Clara absolutely loves sharing with me during our crafting sessions. Bamma, the giraffe, is currently dedicated to keeping Clara’s precious hair bows neatly clipped onto leftover ribbon from my gift-wrapping stash. These hooks are not only adorable decor but also highly functional, helping to organize small items in a fun and accessible way.

Strategic Placement and Future Decor Plans

We strategically hung the bottom hook within Clara’s easy reach. This empowers her to play with items on the hooks, and just as importantly, encourages her to clean them up and put them back when she’s finished. It’s a small step towards fostering independence and organization in her own space. The top hook, however, is placed slightly out of her current grasp (though I’m sure she’ll be able to reach it soon enough!). This allows us to hang items that we might prefer to get down for her, or to keep certain things, like a bevy of necklaces and bracelets, from being tossed all over the room on a daily basis. I’m certain that what they hold will change countless times as she grows, but for now, it’s a delightful blend of function and pure fun. And yes, I’m incredibly proud and my chest swells a little knowing my little bean loves paint chips and ceramic animals just as much as I do! Looking at that sliver of wall space above the hooks, I already have plans for a small piece of homemade art to hang there, which will help balance the visual weight with the frame collage on the left of the closet door, tying the whole wall together.

Of course, Clara’s room, like any space in an evolving home, still has a few items on its to-do list. We’re looking forward to getting new sheets for the bed, adding some elegant crown molding, and possibly painting or refinishing the dresser. There’s also the idea of painting the ceiling once the crown molding is installed, to truly complete the room’s aesthetic. We know we’ll get there someday, bit by bit, transforming her space into a dream room. And you know we’ll keep you posted every step of the way!

In the meantime, we’d love to hear from you! Are you currently hanging any special hooks, displaying sentimental items like ponchos, or perhaps repurposing acrylic display boxes that are almost as old as you are? It’s amazing what creative transformations can happen when you give beloved items a new lease on life. Stranger things have certainly happened in the world of home decor, and we’re always eager to discover new ways to infuse our homes with personality and cherished memories!
