Long Live The Burger

Remembering Our Beloved Chihuahua: A Heartfelt Tribute to Burger, Our Best Friend

Last week, we shared some profoundly sad news on our Instagram Stories, but it felt imperative to also dedicate a space here on the blog to Burger, our sweet chihuahua, who was such an integral part of our lives and this online community. It is with heavy hearts that we announce that on Monday, our beloved Burger peacefully passed away at the remarkable age of 15. While he lived a long and incredibly wonderful life, the silence he has left behind is deafening, and we miss him beyond words. Our home, once filled with his tiny pitter-patter and distinctive personality, now feels far too quiet without our cherished companion.

Burger came into our lives when we were just 24 years old, marking the beginning of so many ‘firsts’ for us as a couple. He joined our family before we walked down the aisle, before this very blog was even conceived, and long before the patter of little human feet filled our home. He was present for almost every significant adult experience we shared together, a constant, unwavering presence through all the milestones and everyday moments. Burger wasn’t just a pet; he was a founding member of our little family, a steadfast companion who witnessed our growth, our dreams, and our evolution. His presence predates nearly every aspect of the life we’ve built, making his departure feel like the closing of a foundational chapter.

A Life Full of Joy and Unconditional Love

Burger was, without exaggeration, always such a happy boy. His spirit was infectious, a tiny beacon of pure joy that brightened even the dullest days. We are eternally grateful for every single year, every shared memory, and every moment of his precious life. His passing, seemingly peaceful in his sleep, offers some comfort in our grief. It’s hard to believe that six years ago, he was diagnosed with a severe heart murmur, a condition that often shortens a dog’s life significantly. Yet, Burger, ever the resilient little fighter, defied all odds, blessing us with many more years than we ever dared to hope for. Those extra years were truly a gift, and we cherish the strength and spirit he showed. Even so, the world feels profoundly emptier without his happy presence. We understood that he wouldn’t be with us forever, but his recent health had shown no significant decline. There was no real warning, just the sudden quiet on a Monday afternoon. One moment, he was here, a vibrant part of our morning routine, and by 1 PM, he was gone, leaving an immense void in his wake.

Oh, what we wouldn’t give for just one more snuggle, one more chance to gently remove something silly from his nose, or to hear his excited little barks once again. Burger had a remarkable way of making us laugh, often unintentionally. He was simply the best. He had an endearing aversion to costumes, for example. The mere suggestion of dressing up would be met with a look of utter displeasure, which, ironically, made us laugh even harder. His expressions were priceless, a testament to his big personality encased in a tiny frame.

And who could possibly forget his legendary “foot phone”? It was a quirky habit that never ceased to amuse us and anyone who witnessed it. These small, unique traits were what made Burger truly special and so deeply ingrained in the tapestry of our daily lives. They are the memories we cling to now, little vignettes of a life well-lived and a dog well-loved. We took this intrepid little dog on our honeymoon to Alaska, an adventure he embraced with surprising enthusiasm. He was always up for an adventure, big or small, as long as it was with us. Our lives are filled with countless precious memories of our travels and everyday routines with Burger.

Every year, without fail, we celebrated his birthday, making sure each year was as special as the last. We made the most of every single moment, cherishing the passage of time with our beloved companion. Though he was a small dog, a tiny chihuahua by breed, Burger possessed a personality that filled our entire house, permeating every room and every corner of our hearts. We often joked that he was a little dog with a giant presence, and it’s something we truly believed. His absence has created an emptiness that physical size could never convey.

A Deeply Cherished Family Member

Burger had an undeniable charm; every vet who ever met him immediately fell in love. His sweet disposition and endearing quirks made him a favorite among the staff. On that heartbreaking Monday, the vet’s kindness was a true solace. They gently told us that Burger was a cherished patient, a favorite around the office, and that he was incredibly lucky to have us, emphasizing how clear our deep love for him was. These words, offered with such genuine empathy, were incredibly comforting during our time of profound grief. It’s a testament to the compassionate understanding of veterinary professionals and a valuable lesson for anyone wondering what to say to someone navigating the loss of a beloved pet: acknowledging their pet’s unique charm and the depth of their bond can make an immense difference. Such sentiments remind us that we are not alone in our sorrow, and that the love we share with our pets is universally understood and valued.

We miss him terribly. While we know that with time, the sharp edges of grief will soften, the imprint he left on all our hearts is indelible. Burger truly worked his way into the deepest parts of our souls, becoming an irreplaceable part of our family fabric. We are profoundly grateful for every last moment we shared, for every silly picture, and for every cherished tradition that now feels so poignant. One of our most treasured memories involves our annual Florida spring break trips, where Burger would serenely float across our rental house’s pool with John. It was a tradition he adored, and through these moments, we jokingly surmised that his ultimate aspiration was to retire by a pool in Florida, soaking up the sun and enjoying the gentle rhythm of the water.

It truly was a beloved tradition, one that encapsulated his playful spirit and our shared joy. He absolutely loved it, his tiny body relaxed on the float, a picture of pure contentment. Just look at that happy face in the pictures – pure bliss. Burger never missed an opportunity to try out another pool or another float, always eager for his next aquatic adventure. His enthusiasm was contagious, making these trips even more memorable for us all. We are so thankful that he had countless sunny spots to bask in, a true sun-worshipper at heart. We are especially glad he got to see our new pool finished and spent an entire summer lounging contentedly on the deck. He was so incredibly happy in these moments, a tiny king surveying his sun-drenched kingdom. It’s just profoundly sorrowful that those joyful times had to come to an end.

A Unique Bond and Lasting Legacy

He even had a special ritual where he would let me hold him like a baby, but only me, and only on the front porch. In those quiet moments, he would completely relax and drift off to sleep in my arms, a testament to the unique bond we shared. He was such a sweet and loyal companion to all of us throughout these many years. Our children have known no other life but one with Burger by their side; he has been a constant, loving presence their entire lives. He was always around, ever so happily, to “Roomba the crumbs up” after every meal, a dedicated and efficient little clean-up crew member who brought endless smiles to our faces. I know I keep reiterating our gratitude, but it truly comes from the deepest part of our being. We simply couldn’t have asked for a better dog, a more perfect fit for our family. This recent photo, taken on our new kitchen porch, captures him perfectly – his happy little face, eagerly anticipating the potential of stray crumbs. He knew good things were coming.

Sometimes, his expressions and antics were so comical, so expressive, that I truly believed he was a cartoon dog brought to life. How could a real dog possess such a hilarious, animated demeanor? His huge eyes and perpetually expressive face were a source of endless amusement and affection for us. We will love you forever, Burger. Your memory will live on in every corner of our home and every beat of our hearts.

This post, much like our emotions right now, is a bit “all over the place.” We are overwhelmed with sadness, yet equally overflowing with gratitude for the 15 incredible years he graced our lives. It’s a complex mix of emotions that leaves us feeling profoundly moved and a little disoriented. Burger was more than just a pet; he was a treasured, founding member of our family, and his absence is felt deeply by every single one of us. He is, and always will be, so profoundly missed.

We want to conclude this tribute with a colossal thank you to all of you, our wonderful readers and followers, for loving Burger through the screen for all these years. Your comments, your kind words, and your virtual affection meant the world to us. We are so incredibly grateful for your love, your thoughts, and your understanding during this difficult time. Burger was, without a doubt, simply the best dog a family could ever ask for. In his honor, we are going to plant a tree in a very special spot – a corner of our yard he particularly liked to sniff and explore. It feels like a fitting tribute, a living memorial in a place he loved, a quiet corner where we can always remember his joyful spirit. We believe he would have truly appreciated that.
