Our Kitchen Transformation Blueprint

Unveiling Our Kitchen’s Electrical Transformation: A DIY Journey Through the Wires

Welcome back to another exciting installment of our kitchen renovation saga! We’re thrilled to continue sharing every intricate step of this journey, mirroring the transparency we offered over four years ago during our initial kitchen makeover, a project that ultimately spanned an impressive 113 days from concept to completion. This week, the spotlight shines on a crucial milestone: the arrival and incredible work of our professional electricians. While we pride ourselves on our DIY prowess – tackling everything from painting and demolition to drywall and furniture building, even dabbling in basic plumbing – we firmly believe in enlisting experts for high-stakes tasks. Electrical work, particularly in an older home, falls squarely into this category, as it carries the potential for significant issues, including the dreaded risk of a house fire. Our peace of mind, and ultimately our safety, is paramount.

That’s why we meticulously sought out and hired a highly recommended, two-man electrician team. Their stellar reputation preceded them, having been enthusiastically endorsed by two close friends who had used and loved their services. Their mission? To execute a series of critical electrical upgrades and reconfigurations designed to dramatically enhance the functionality and safety of our kitchen, aligning perfectly with our ambitious new layout. Let’s delve into the specific transformations they brought to life:

  • Demystifying the Pantry Wire: They successfully solved the baffling case of the “mystery wire” lurking above our pantry. This elusive wire was, in fact, the dedicated line and outlet for the refrigerator, which bizarrely emerged from the wall only to re-enter it for grounding purposes – a truly strange and inefficient setup!
  • Microwave Integration: The now-identified refrigerator wire was skillfully rerouted and concealed behind the wall, transforming it into the dedicated power source for our upcoming built-in microwave, destined to hang gracefully adjacent to the pantry. This smart move not only cleaned up an unsightly wire but also prepared the space for modern appliance integration.
  • Cooktop to Stove Conversion: We transitioned from a hardwired cooktop to a new, modern stove. The electricians expertly converted the existing hardwired connection behind the cooktop into a standard plug outlet, a necessary modification for our new appliance (discover more about our appliance selection and placement here).
  • Wall Oven Decommission: The hardwired connection for the old wall oven, which we’ve decided to remove in favor of a new range, was safely and permanently terminated. This eliminates potential hazards and clears the way for future cabinet reconfigurations (learn more about our appliance decisions here).
  • New Fridge Location Power: A brand-new, dedicated electrical line and outlet were installed for the refrigerator’s new location across the room. Prior to this, we were temporarily powering our fridge with an extension cord, a clear fire hazard and a stark reminder of the importance of proper electrical planning in any kitchen remodel.

The overarching lesson gleaned from this intensive electrical phase? The profound truth that rooms, much like life itself, often have to experience a period of chaos and disarray before they can truly evolve and improve. This “worse before it gets better” philosophy is a mantra for any serious renovator, reminding us to embrace the temporary mess as a necessary precursor to beauty and functionality. To truly appreciate the progress, let’s take a visual tour of the kitchen before the electricians even stepped foot inside (after we had already performed the initial shuffle of the fridge and pantry for our updated layout – more on that strategic rearrangement here):

In this initial “before” stage, you can observe the remnants of the old layout and the beginnings of our new vision. While we had already introduced our new counter-depth fridge and oven – positioned where the old cooktop and cabinetry once stood – and removed some granite counters, we unfortunately don’t have a wide-angle photograph capturing that precise stage. However, we do have these illustrative shots focusing on the stove and fridge in their new, albeit temporary, placements, hinting at the potential of the space (further details on this transitional phase are available here):

And now, prepare yourselves for the heart of the “worse before it gets better” transformation – here’s a raw, unedited glimpse of our kitchen while the electricians were diligently performing their intricate work, exposing the inner workings of our walls:

Insanity, indeed! The sheer number of wires, the exposed wall, the temporary disarray – it’s enough to make a seasoned renovator pause. Yet, this controlled chaos is a testament to progress. Once the electricians meticulously fixed all the wiring, safely routed new lines, and expertly sealed up the sections of wall they had opened, a remarkable transformation occurred. Everything was carefully pushed back into its designated place, and the protective towels were finally removed from our new appliances. Voila! We were left with a fully functional oven and stove, a perfectly placed plug ready for the microwave (allowing us to finally begin its integration), no more mysterious wires dangling awkwardly from the ceiling above the pantry, peace of mind regarding the now-terminated loose wires from the old wall oven, and, perhaps most satisfyingly, a refrigerator operating without the precarious reliance on an extension cord. Huzzah for proper electrical infrastructure!

The investment in professional electrical services was unequivocally worth every penny. For just a few hours of dedicated work from two skilled electricians, we paid approximately $80 per hour (the first hour was $87, with subsequent hours billed at $70). This reasonable fee secured not only safety but also the essential foundation for our dream kitchen. For any interested locals in the Richmond, VA area, we wholeheartedly recommend S.J. Ryan Electric. They proved to be good people offering fair prices and delivering excellent workmanship. We want to be clear: they are unaware that we are bloggers, and this mention is purely a genuine shout-out for a job well done, entirely uncompensated or incentivized. When you encounter true professionalism, it deserves recognition!

Admittedly, the kitchen still presents a somewhat chaotic picture, a true testament to the ongoing nature of a major renovation. However, with the critical electrical work now complete, we can clearly envision the next stages of refinement. Once the fridge is seamlessly built into white custom cabinetry (eliminating those bulky black sides), and the rather dingy, exposed paneling along with the edge of that beam receive a fresh coat of paint, we’ll take another significant step closer to our vision. The real transformation will begin to unfold as the lighting is redone, the cabinets are painted, and the new floors, counters, backsplash, and a functional peninsula are finally installed. Each of these elements will propel us further along the path to a truly stunning and highly functional kitchen.

We were fortunate in several aspects of this electrical undertaking. Firstly, the previous owners had updated much of the kitchen’s electrical infrastructure relatively recently, meaning we already benefited from GFCI-protected outlets and other modern safety features. Secondly, living in a ranch-style home significantly simplified access for the electricians. They could easily navigate the attic to pull and drop wires, circumventing the extensive drywall damage that often accompanies such work in multi-story homes. Despite this advantage, the “mystery wire” above the old fridge did present a unique challenge. This particular area of the attic was exceptionally difficult to access due to the steep pitch of the original roof before a previous addition, necessitating the electricians to open and close a section of the wall above the pantry – a task usually avoided when ample attic access is available.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the ever-evolving, never-ending kitchen agenda! Please note that the order of these tasks is fluid and subject to change as we progress, but this provides a comprehensive snapshot of what lies ahead:

  • Fridge Integration: Designing and building custom cabinetry to seamlessly enclose our new refrigerator, creating a polished, built-in look.
  • Microwave Installation: Constructing the necessary housing and installing the built-in microwave, ensuring it’s both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Backsplash Demolition: Carefully removing the old backsplash to prepare the walls for a fresh, modern update.
  • Dishwasher Upgrade: Installing our new, energy-efficient dishwasher and finding a new home for the old one (perhaps through Craigslist).
  • Stove Flush-Mount: Ensuring the new stove is perfectly integrated and flush with the surrounding cabinetry for a high-end, custom appearance.
  • Peninsula Creation: Building or purchasing cabinetry to form a functional and stylish peninsula, adding valuable counter space and a potential breakfast bar.
  • Countertop Replacement: Demolishing the remainder of the old counters and installing durable, beautiful new ones.
  • Doorway Expansion: Collaborating with a contractor to open up an 8-foot doorway between the kitchen and dining room, enhancing flow and light.
  • Vent Hood Selection & Install: Acquiring and installing a high-performance vent hood above the stove, crucial for ventilation and kitchen air quality.
  • Accent Wall Transformation: Removing upper cabinets along the stove wall (our designated accent wall) and extending the new backsplash from the counter all the way to the ceiling, creating a dramatic visual statement.
  • Floating Shelves: Sourcing or building elegant floating shelves for the accent wall, which will be hung after the tiling is complete to minimize tile cuts and achieve a more seamless finish.
  • Cabinetry Consistency: Purchasing or crafting matching doors for the new cabinetry sections, ensuring a cohesive and integrated look with the existing cabinets.
  • Hardware Refresh: Updating all kitchen hinges and hardware for a modern, unified aesthetic.
  • Lighting Overhaul: Removing the outdated fluorescent lights and ceiling fan, then installing modern recessed lighting in the work areas and stylish pendant lights over the new peninsula.
  • Flooring Installation: Laying down new, durable cork floors throughout the kitchen, chosen for their comfort and environmental benefits.
  • Crown Molding Addition: Installing crown molding atop the cabinets to provide a finished, architectural detail.
  • Cabinet Painting: Thoroughly priming and painting all kitchen cabinets, giving them a fresh, updated look.
  • Cozy Corner Creation: Developing a comfortable and inviting “cozy corner” near the fireplace, possibly incorporating a chair, rug, side table or ottoman, and built-in shelves.

Breaking down such an enormous project into smaller, manageable, bite-sized pieces is absolutely essential for us. While we still occasionally feel a touch overwhelmed (especially when typing out lists like the one above!), our past experiences have taught us that tackling one day and one small project at a time is the key to maintaining sanity and momentum. This incremental approach also allows us the flexibility to course-correct as we go, rather than rushing into a multitude of decisions and projects all at once. Slowly and steadily, we will inch closer to a finished room that we are confident we will cherish for many, many years to come.

What about you, our wonderful readers? What did you accomplish this past weekend? Were there any daunting electrical updates on your horizon? Or perhaps you’re staring down your own crazy-long to-do list? Is anyone else out there boldly ripping apart a room just in time for the holidays? We’re not sure why, but it seems that every year around this time, we find ourselves embarking on something major – a project that inevitably isn’t resolved until well after Christmas. At the close of 2007, we bravely gutted the kitchen of our first home. The end of 2008 saw us refinishing over 50% of our hardwood floors. In late 2009, it was the bathroom’s turn for a complete gut, and by the end of 2010, we were packing up and moving entirely! You can read more about our penchant for holiday season chaos here. Perhaps the familiar dust of renovation simply reminds us of snow? How seasonally appropriate of us, indeed!

Psst – We’re incredibly excited (and, admittedly, a little nervous!) to announce that we’ve been asked to be speakers at Haven, a major DIY and blogging conference taking place in Atlanta this coming June. We’re truly hoping to meet some of you there – and fingers crossed we don’t completely bomb on stage!
