The transformation of our home office has officially begun, and we’re thrilled to announce that the ceiling and walls are now beautifully painted! This milestone comes just 48 hours before a very important scheduled delivery (a baby, if you’re keeping track!), adding an extra layer of urgency and excitement to our DIY efforts. We opted for a crisp, pure white trim, matching the central desk in the room. If it appears slightly creamy in some photos, it’s likely just the changing light throughout the day or the camera’s perception – trust us, it’s pristine white in person!

While the fresh paint is a huge step, the room still feels quite stark and minimalist (any Game of Thrones fans out there last night? Talk about stark!). We’re brimming with ideas to infuse personality, warmth, and functionality into this space. Our vision includes:
- A Cozy Area Rug: To anchor the space and add texture underfoot.
- Stylish Window Treatments: For privacy, light control, and an added layer of sophistication.
- Unique Pendant Lighting: One or two distinctive pendants over the desk area will provide essential task lighting and a touch of flair.
- Curated Art Pieces: To inspire creativity and personalize the walls.
- Ample Storage Solutions: Along the left wall, we plan to integrate smart storage, possibly a craft table, and a dedicated photography zone.
- An Updated Kid-Friendly Desk Area: On the right side, a refreshed and organized space for our little one to engage in creative activities.
- And much, much more: The decorative possibilities are endless!
Despite being only about 10% complete on the furnishing and decor front, this room has already undergone a remarkable transformation from its former days as a formal living room adorned with blue trim. It’s a testament to the power of paint!

There’s nothing quite like the exhilarating rush of last-minute home improvement projects, especially with a baby on the way. The ticking clock certainly adds an extra layer of motivation, pushing us to get those final coats on the walls and ceilings!

Mastering the Art of Interior Painting: Our Tried-and-True Techniques
Painting a room can seem daunting, but with the right techniques, anyone can achieve professional-looking results. We’ve previously shared a video demonstrating some of our favorite “cutting in” tips – the crucial step of painting neat lines along edges without painter’s tape. If you missed it, you can find our detailed guide and video here. Following that post, we received numerous requests for footage of John in action, rolling paint onto ceilings and walls. Our office painting project provided the perfect opportunity to capture his methods. While these aren’t necessarily the “professional” way to paint a room, they are the techniques that consistently work for us, delivering smooth and even coverage every time. So, without further ado, here’s a look at how John tackles rolling a room:
*A quick note on brands: We occasionally mention specific brands, but these mentions are purely based on our personal preference and positive experiences. We have not been paid or perked to promote them. For instance, while we collaborated with Benjamin Moore on color collections in 2012 & 2013, we never used their products exclusively, nor were we compensated for mentions or received free paint. Our recommendations are always genuine.
Key Painting Tips for Smooth Walls and Ceilings:
For those who prefer reading or can’t watch the videos right now, here are some essential tips for achieving beautifully painted walls and ceilings:
- Utilize a Rod Extender: When painting ceilings, John always uses a rod extender with his roller. This simple tool takes immense strain off your back and shoulders, making the process much more comfortable and efficient.
- Choose the Right Roller for Your Surface: Our home features smooth ceilings, so we opt for rollers specifically designed for “smooth surfaces.” Brands like Purdy, Wooster, or Benjamin Moore are our go-to choices, but we’re not strictly brand loyal; we often pick whatever high-quality option is on sale.
- Protect Your Floors (and Yourself!): While our office floor isn’t carpeted, we would absolutely cover it with drop cloths if it were. If you’re concerned about paint splatters or simply prefer to keep your floors pristine, using drop cloths is always a wise decision (and a practice professionals swear by).
- Control Speed, Paint Load, and Pressure: It’s tempting to rush, but maintaining a consistent speed, not overloading your roller with paint, and applying even pressure are critical. Overdoing any of these can lead to uneven coverage, drips, and unsightly splatters. Patience here pays off with professional-looking results.
- Invest in Quality Paint: Higher quality paints are typically thicker, which significantly reduces dripping and provides better coverage. We don’t use specialized “ceiling paint” for our ceilings; instead, we find that a good quality flat paint works perfectly, offering a beautiful, non-reflective finish.
- Rolling Walls vs. Ceilings: The technique for rolling walls is essentially the same as for ceilings, though we typically skip the rod extender for walls to maintain better control at eye level.
- Our Efficient Painting Order: We’ve perfected a system that minimizes brushstrokes. I (the author) handle the initial “cutting in” around moldings and edges. John then follows immediately behind with the roller, getting as close as possible to the freshly cut-in areas. I then complete my second round of cutting-in, and John once again follows, ensuring the roller blends any potential brushstrokes I might leave, resulting in a seamless finish.
Time-Lapse Transformations: A Look Back at Past Painting Projects
To further illustrate our painting methods, we thought it would be helpful to include a couple of our past time-lapse videos. These offer a condensed view of our process over the years, showcasing the consistency of our approach.
Here’s a captivating time-lapse of us painting our old master bedroom back in 2012. You’ll notice that our approach was quite similar even then. The only significant difference was that I was less steady with cutting in along the ceiling edges, sometimes necessitating the use of painter’s tape in those areas.
And here’s another fascinating time-lapse video from 2011, documenting us priming our kitchen, including the challenging overhead beams. It demonstrates the importance of proper preparation before applying the final coats of paint.
Now that we’ve covered the “how-to” of painting, let’s shift our focus to the equally important “why” behind our choice for the office wall color. Selecting the perfect hue can significantly impact the room’s mood and functionality.
Choosing the Perfect Shade: Our Office Wall Color Journey
The quest for the ideal home office paint color involved thoughtful consideration and a bit of debate. Here were our primary motivations and decision-making factors:
- A Desire for Lightness and Refreshment: We are both inherently drawn to airy and bright office environments. We believe a light color promotes focus, reduces visual clutter, and creates a more positive atmosphere for productivity and creativity.
- Balancing Adjacent Spaces: Our dining room, situated directly across the foyer, is slated to be a dark and moody space. To create a harmonious flow and visual interest, we intentionally avoided another bold or dark color for the office, seeking a refreshing contrast.
- The “Honeydew Green” Dilemma: I initially campaigned quite hard for a soft honeydew green. However, John raised a crucial point: such a color could potentially hinder the room’s function. We plan to photograph smaller projects on a craft table within this office, and he worried that too much green on the walls would reflect onto our subjects, casting an undesirable hue in our photographs. This practical consideration led us to reconsider.
- The Test Pot Method: As is often the case with important color decisions, we had some trouble agreeing! To resolve this, we wisely invested in four test pots: Daiquiri Ice, Lime Froth, Palest Pistachio, and Tint of Mint. This allowed us to see how each color truly looked in the room’s unique lighting conditions.
And here’s a crucial tip for applying those test paint pots (it was impossible to get an accurate picture, but just imagine four distinct blobs on the wall in various spots around the room to observe them in different lighting). We meticulously painted them from top to bottom in alphabetical order. This simple trick helped us remember which swatch was which, preventing any mix-ups during our decision-making process. After several days of careful observation and healthy debate, we finally reached a consensus: Palest Pistachio.
The chosen shade felt wonderfully airy and light, without being overtly green, perfectly addressing John’s concerns about photographic reflections. An added bonus? It was also named one of ten “Happiness Inducing Colors” by Remodelista, which certainly didn’t hurt its appeal! The room is now fully painted in Palest Pistachio. It tends to photograph a little bluer than its real-life appearance, but it is undeniably a happy color that feels bright, welcoming, and subtly vibrant without being bold or neon. It truly sets an uplifting tone for our new workspace.

Please excuse my bias, but this is genuinely one of my favorite pictures ever – it perfectly captures the spirit of our home and family life.

We have exciting plans for the kid-desk area. Our vision is to create a much larger bulletin board extending almost from window to window above this space. It’s going to be a fun and functional addition (and please, try to ignore the crazy appearance of the windows – the screens are currently open for painting ventilation!).

It feels incredibly satisfying to check off another significant item from our ever-growing to-do list. You know, at least until a newborn arrives and our entire meticulously organized house inevitably goes into delightful chaos once again! But for now, we’ll bask in the glory of our newly painted, serene home office.
