You guys, you never cease to amaze! Once again, our community’s collective brilliance shone through last week as over 500 incredible and imaginative ideas, accompanied by truly remarkable Photoshop skills, poured in for Jamie’s design challenge. It’s clear there’s nothing quite like a collaborative brainstorming session when tackling home renovation roadblocks. Jamie is absolutely thrilled with the wealth of options she now has to explore for her space, and she’s promised to share ‘after’ pictures once her transformation is complete. Now, let’s pivot to a fresh challenge, because Meghan’s master bathroom dilemma is eagerly awaiting your ingenious solutions, and I, for one, can’t wait to hear your creative input.

Meghan’s Master Bathroom Conundrum: The “Giant Scar Face” Bathtub

“Say hello to my little friend! Yes, I have a giant Scar Face bathtub.” This evocative description immediately paints a picture of Meghan’s current predicament. She and her husband purchased their 1987 home a little over a year ago and have been tirelessly working their way through numerous projects, steadily transforming the house into their dream home. However, the master bathroom remains a significant hurdle, a space where Meghan often finds herself scratching her head, walking out more confused than when she walked in. Given that this is their master bathroom, this sense of bewilderment occurs far too often, highlighting the pressing need for a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution.

“This bathtub is huge. And my husband hates it, but it’s not in our budget to tear it out. Should I tile or beadboard the front? Put shelves or bookcases on the side? And what do you put inside said bookcases? I need something to mask it and make the space more functional. Thank you! – Meghan”

Meghan’s request perfectly encapsulates the common challenges faced during budget-conscious home renovations. The sheer scale of the bathtub, its dated appearance, and the inability to simply replace it create a complex design puzzle. Her questions about surfacing the front, adding storage, and styling those storage solutions are precisely the kind of detailed considerations that turn a house into a personalized home. The goal here is not just to mask the tub, but to integrate it into a cohesive, functional, and beautiful master bathroom design. This is where our collective creativity comes in!

Unveiling Design Solutions: From Photoshop Mock-ups to Practical Master Bathroom Makeovers

My initial approach, like many of you, was to simply stare at Meghan’s “before” photo, envisioning possibilities and mentally rearranging the space. Once my mind started churning, I pulled the image into Photoshop to bring some of those initial concepts to life. Here’s a look at my first set of ideas, designed to tackle the large bathtub head-on while enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the master bathroom.

Design Idea 1: Elegant Bookshelves and a Soothing Palette for Enhanced Bathroom Storage

Meghan's master bathroom with white built-in bookshelves flanking the tub, light walls, and a new tub front.

One of my immediate thoughts revolved around integrating elegant white bookshelves. I’ve always been a proponent of built-ins; their ability to add character, storage, and a custom feel to any space is unparalleled. Bringing two of these in to flank the existing bathtub instantly adds a sense of height and draws the eye upwards towards the beautiful stained glass window, transforming it into an even more prominent focal point. To enhance this, I also beefed up the trim around the window slightly, creating a more balanced and refined look.

To infuse the space with a serene, cohesive atmosphere, I envisioned painting the backs of the bookcases in a soft blue-gray tone, such as Behr’s Aqua Smoke. This subtle color choice would beautifully pick up on the delicate tones present in the stained glass window, tying the entire space together. For the walls, a light sand color like Behr’s Hazelnut Cream would create a warm, inviting backdrop that harmonizes with the existing tub and floor, ensuring a sophisticated and calming aesthetic for this master bathroom renovation.

As for the practical aspect of what to place on those shelves, the possibilities are abundant and can cater to both utility and decoration:

  • Fluffy Extra Towels: Stacked neatly, these not only provide convenient access but also add a luxurious, spa-like feel to the bathroom.
  • Textured Baskets: Ideal for concealing clutter like extra toilet paper, cleaning supplies, or personal items, while adding an element of visual interest and warmth.
  • Glass Containers: Stylish jars, similar to these, can be filled with decorative sea sponges, loofahs, or shimmering sea glass, elevating everyday items into decorative accents.
  • Pretty Bottles of Bubble Bath or Bath Salts/Oils: Displaying elegant bath products adds to the spa ambiance and makes them easily accessible for a relaxing soak.
  • A Stack of Magazines or Books: Perfect for a leisurely read while unwinding in the tub. (Though I confess, keeping reading material dry in the tub remains a personal challenge, hopefully Meghan is more coordinated!)
  • Candles: Whether traditional candles for a warm glow or flickering battery-operated ones for safety (especially on a bookshelf), they contribute significantly to a calming atmosphere.
  • Beachy Keepsakes: Jars filled with sand, rocks, or shells from vacations, or even labeled little travel jars like these, can add a personal, nostalgic touch.

Enhancing the Bathtub Front: Tiling, Beadboard, or Planks for a Modern Look

Meghan’s insightful mention of redoing the front of the tub’s steps with something white to break up the dominant tan tone of the tub is an excellent idea. This simple change can dramatically update the appearance of the entire unit without the cost of a full replacement. Here are three fantastic options she could consider, each offering a distinct style and practical benefits for a bathroom environment:

  • White Subway Tile: A timeless and versatile choice, white subway tile offers a clean, classic aesthetic that can complement almost any design style. It’s durable, easy to clean, and provides a subtle texture that can elegantly mask the original surface.
  • White Beadboard: For a more charming, cottage-inspired, or even modern farmhouse feel, white beadboard is an excellent option. Crucially, Meghan should seek out bathroom-friendly beadboard, which is specifically manufactured to withstand the moisture and humidity inherent in a bathroom environment, preventing warping or damage.
  • White Horizontal Planks: Offering a contemporary and clean-lined look, horizontal planks can provide a fresh, modern update. Similar to beadboard, it’s essential to choose bathroom-safe boards designed to resist moisture and rot, ensuring longevity and maintaining the aesthetic appeal.

The installation process for beadboard or thin horizontal planks can be relatively straightforward. Meghan could attach sheets of these materials directly under the lip of each step using a strong adhesive specifically formulated for bathroom use. It’s paramount to select an adhesive that can reliably withstand steam, humidity, and direct moisture exposure to ensure a lasting finish. If she prefers a shinier, more reflective surface, tiling is an excellent alternative. When choosing grout, a white option would likely be the best choice. Anything too high in contrast, such as a dark grout with white tile, might create a busy or overwhelming pattern, especially given the existing surface and movement on the tub itself, detracting from the desired clean and serene look.

Design Idea 2: A Dramatic Color Transformation with Bathtub Reglazing

For my next design exploration, I aimed for a slightly more dramatic yet still inherently soothing aesthetic. This vision involved a rich, dark green tone, reminiscent of Behr’s Mermaid Net, applied to the backs of the bookcases. This deep hue would provide a beautiful contrast and visual anchor. The walls, in turn, would be painted a soft light blue, perhaps Behr’s Country Mist, creating an airy and expansive feel. Finally, the surface of the step and the entire bathtub itself would be transformed with a new, soft putty tone. Once again, the exquisite stained glass window served as my primary color inspiration, guiding the selection of these harmonious shades. To further enhance the window’s prominence and ensure a proportionate feel, I also beefed up the white trim surrounding it.

A crucial consideration for this design is whether the existing bathtub can be professionally reglazed. This process, often referred to as refinishing, resurfacing, or re-enameling, involves applying a new, durable coating over the tub’s original surface. It’s an incredibly effective and affordable way to update a dated or discolored tub without the significant expense and disruption of a full replacement. We, for example, utilized a local reglazing expert for our first house’s tub and were absolutely delighted with the results. Obtaining an estimate from a reputable local professional would confirm if Meghan’s tub material is suitable for a color change, which can open up a world of design possibilities.

Even if reglazing isn’t an option for a full color transformation, a simple yet impactful update involves replacing the tub’s existing hardware. Switching to a brushed nickel, polished chrome, or oil-rubbed bronze finish can instantly modernize the entire unit, providing a fresh, contemporary touch that elevates the bathroom’s overall design, regardless of the tub’s surface finish.

Design Idea 3: Maximizing Space with Full Nook Built-in Cabinets and Shelving

Lastly, I explored the idea of truly maximizing the potential of the bathtub nook by incorporating full built-in cabinetry and shelving throughout the entire space. This comprehensive approach offers unparalleled storage and a fully integrated, custom look that can dramatically transform the area, making the large tub feel like a deliberate and luxurious feature rather than an imposing obstacle.

While this particular Photoshop rendering might appear a little busier than the others, which could simply be a limitation of my amateur Photoshop skills, the underlying concept is incredibly powerful. The advantage of this design is the sheer amount of additional storage it provides. I intentionally tried to give Meghan more ideas for what could comfortably reside on these expanded shelves, given the increased space. For instance, the shelves along the back wall might be narrower, perfect for holding smaller items like candles, bottles of bubble bath, or decorative trinkets, while deeper items like folded towels or larger baskets could be neatly stored on the side shelves. If Meghan is concerned about the space feeling cluttered or visually overwhelming, a simple yet effective strategy is to maintain a soft, neutral palette for all items displayed on the shelves. This ensures cohesion and serenity, allowing the architecture of the built-ins to shine without distraction.

Further Inspirations for a Personalized Master Bathroom Retreat

Beyond these primary design concepts, a few other intriguing options came to mind that Meghan could consider for adding even more character and functionality to her master bathroom:

  • Add Glass Doors to the Bookcases: For a touch of glamorous sophistication and an upscale feel, installing glass doors on the built-in bookcases could be a wonderful addition. This also offers a practical benefit by protecting items from steam and moisture, though it might make daily access slightly less convenient.
  • Paint the Window Frame: Consider painting the frame around the stained glass window the same deep charcoal color found within the glass itself. This subtle change could dramatically emphasize the window, transforming it into an even more pronounced and striking focal point in the room.
  • Hunt Down Subtle Gleaming Tile: For added interest and texture, Meghan could explore tiling the entire back wall around the window. Perhaps some small, shimmering glass mosaic tiles in a soft celery tone would introduce a delicate sparkle and depth, creating an elegant feature wall.
  • Personalized Touches: Beyond the functional, remember to infuse the space with elements that reflect Meghan’s personality and style. This could involve unique artwork, plants that thrive in humid environments, or even a plush bath mat that feels luxurious underfoot. (And, of course, for a touch of whimsy, finding a tiny bathrobe for the cat – just so he feels the luxury too – is always an option!).

These are just a few initial thoughts and ideas I’ve compiled to help Meghan tackle her master bathroom renovation and transform her “little friend” into a beloved feature. The goal is to create a space that is not only functional and visually appealing but also a true sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation.
