Pear Green and Sky Blue Nursery Sanctuary

From the moment we knew our little one was on the way – even before we fully grasped the joyful reality of impending parenthood – a vivid design dream began to take shape in my mind. I envisioned transforming the nursery walls into a lively pear green, complemented by a serene, light aqua ceiling, moving away from the standard, often dull, white. However, merely articulating “green walls with a blue ceiling” often conjured up images of disastrous home makeovers from popular TV shows, which wasn’t quite the inspiring vision I wanted to convey. My dear husband, bless his heart, found it challenging to grasp my “vision” until we physically brought out paint swatches. This tangible approach allowed me to explicitly demonstrate the exact tones and shades I had in mind, bridging the gap between abstract ideas and concrete reality.

This experience highlighted a crucial tip for anyone embarking on a home design project: many individuals, especially those less fluent in the nuances of “interior decorating” speak, are inherently visual creatures. Simply stating, “I want to paint the side tables black,” can be far less effective, and potentially more alarming for some, than presenting an image of a beautifully styled room that features black side tables. A visual reference can instantly calm anxieties and help others visualize the potential outcome, making them much more receptive to your design proposals.

True to form, once I presented John with a soft, celery-pear-like tone for the walls and demonstrated how a subtle, dreamy aqua would grace the ceiling – especially with the crisp white crown molding serving as a clean, defining line between the two colors – he was completely on board. With our design vision aligned, the next exciting step was to don our trusty painting clothes and meticulously clear out the room, preparing it for its grand transformation. (And speaking of grand, just look at that belly! It’s quite an accomplishment with four more months of baby-carrying ahead.)

Choosing the Perfect Nursery Palette: Walls and Ceiling

But let’s return to my favorite topic: paint. Selecting the right shades is paramount, especially for a nursery where atmosphere and mood are key. Just as we’ve approached past projects, like our previous ceiling painting endeavor, our method for choosing the perfect ceiling color involved taping all our potential paint chips directly onto the actual ceiling. This crucial step allowed us to observe how each hue reacted to the room’s unique lighting conditions. Colors appear vastly different on horizontal surfaces like ceilings compared to vertical walls, primarily because light reflects off them in distinct ways. Through this careful observation, we quickly ruled out the swatch on the far right as being too bright, and the one immediately to its left as too light. The swatch to the left of that, however, was absolutely “juuuuust right” – a subtle, ethereal aqua that perfectly captured the dreamy quality we sought. The far-left swatch, by contrast, appeared a bit too muted and muddy for our taste. This meticulous process of hunting through numerous swatches, narrowing down our favorites, and testing them in situ, ultimately led us to our final ceiling color. For those curious, the winning swatch was aptly named “Regency Pale” by True Value.

Selecting the wall color proved to be a more straightforward affair. I’ve long admired “Celery Sticks” by Glidden. This particular shade boasts cheerful golden undertones and possesses a remarkable personality without being overwhelming or, crucially, without absorbing the light in a smaller space. It strikes a beautiful balance, offering a vibrant feel while maintaining a sense of openness. Naturally, I was absolutely thrilled to finally have the perfect opportunity to utilize this beloved color, creating a fun, welcoming, and cheerful nursery environment, all thanks to the precious little person I’m currently nurturing. The combination of this soft green and the subtle aqua ceiling promised a harmonious, nature-inspired space for our baby girl.

Embracing Health and Sustainability: The Mythic Paint Difference

Beyond aesthetics, the health and safety of our baby were paramount. Therefore, we decided it was time to put Mythic paint to the test. Our decision wasn’t solely driven by my pregnancy – where exposure to chemicals and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) is a significant concern – but also, and more importantly, for the long-term well-being of our baby. Conventional paints are notorious for their prolonged off-gassing, a process where harmful chemicals are released into the air for anywhere from one to even three years after application. This residual emission can impact indoor air quality and pose health risks, particularly for infants with developing respiratory systems.

While Mythic paint, at approximately $40 a gallon, is a higher investment compared to many cheaper alternatives found at big-box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot, which typically retail around $25, we firmly believe the benefits far outweigh the cost. Mythic paint is widely celebrated as the “cream of the no-VOC crop.” This reputation is well-deserved, owing to its exceptional coverage, an impressive spectrum of vibrant and sophisticated colors, and its entirely non-toxic, mommy and baby-friendly formula. Opting for a zero-VOC paint not only ensures a healthier immediate environment during and after painting but also provides peace of mind, knowing that our baby’s nursery will be free from harmful chemical emissions for years to come. With our pre-selected swatches in hand, we headed to EcoLogic, one of our favorite local hubs for all things green and sustainable, eager to source this superior paint.

The Art of Color Matching: Finding Our Mythic Shades

Our initial plan was to simply hold our existing swatches against Mythic’s paint deck, aiming to find the closest possible matches in their extensive range. However, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Mythic offers an advanced color-matching service. Unlike traditional machine-based matching, they boast an extensive database containing formulas for countless other paint brands, allowing for precise replication – crucially, without the added VOCs. This innovative approach ensures customers can achieve their desired colors with all the health benefits of Mythic paint.

Unfortunately, there was a slight hitch in our specific case: our “Regency Pale” swatch from True Value was not yet in their system, and “Celery Sticks” by Glidden was too new, having been introduced only a few months prior. Not to worry, the EcoLogic team guided us through their physical swatches, and we actually found two extremely similar, if not virtually identical, Mythic colors within their deck. For the ceiling, we landed on “Adanna Aire” in a flat finish – ideal for ceilings as it minimizes imperfections and provides a soft, non-reflective look. For the walls, we settled on “Autumn Bloom” in an easy-care eggshell finish, chosen for its subtle sheen and excellent durability, which is perfect for wipeable nursery walls.

The Magic of Frog Tape: Achieving Crisp Lines

Upon proudly returning home with our newly acquired nursery paint, we suddenly remembered that the wonderful folks at Frog Tape had previously sent us a few rolls to try out. We had heard a myriad of positive reviews about their seemingly “mad scientist” tape, renowned for its patented PaintBlock® Technology. This innovative feature involves a super-absorbent polymer that forms a “micro-barrier” upon contact with paint, effectively sealing the tape’s edge. This barrier acts as an impenetrable shield, making paint bleeding a virtual impossibility. It truly felt like something out of a Bill Nye The Science Guy episode! We were undeniably intrigued and eager to put this magical green tape to the test to see what it could truly achieve in our nursery project.

While we’ve always been advocates for the traditional method of cutting in with a brush – I particularly adore a specific little brush for precision work – we must admit that the process of taping off the crown molding with Frog Tape was surprisingly swift and efficient. The time saved was remarkable, especially when considering the intricate detailing of crown molding.

Moreover, using the tape genuinely accelerated the painting of the ceiling edges. It allowed us to move with greater confidence and speed, significantly reducing the meticulous, slow pace typically required when carefully edging by hand with a brush. This efficiency was a huge plus for our project timeline and our backs!

A Little Closet Facelift: Functional and Fun

Oh, and we pause our tape talk for a moment to introduce our rather sad-looking little nursery closet. We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to even have this humble enclave, as this room was originally a dining room. The fact that we could successfully convert it into a bedroom, largely due to an already existing closet, was a significant win. It was just a shame it looked quite so forlorn in its original state. Wop wop.

Before we embarked on any painting, we carefully removed the closet door. We have exciting plans for a cute little closet facelift, which will feature a stylish curtain that can be easily pushed aside. This creative solution is necessary because the original door swung outwards into the room, inconveniently interfering with the main nursery entrance – a frustrating design flaw we were determined to resolve. Grrrr.

Nursery Closet Before Painting

It was actually John’s brilliant idea to extend the light aqua color from the ceiling and incorporate it into the inside of the closet, adding a playful pop of unexpected fun. Isn’t he clever? The entire time he was diligently painting the closet, I found myself watching in admiration, often narrating to our baby girl just what a decorating genius her daddy is. (Yes, I converse with my stomach just as frequently as I chat with our chihuahua – it’s all part of the pregnancy charm!).

Here’s a sneak peek of the closet in its initial painted stage. However, there’s still much more to do! We’re planning to add a plethora of practical elements, including storage baskets, adjustable hanging bars, and of course, the stylish closet curtain. So, do stay tuned for a dedicated closet post when we reach that exciting stage of our nursery makeover.

The Verdict on Frog Tape and the Completed Ceiling

Returning to the subject of Frog Tape: after diligently applying two coats of the soft aqua paint to both the ceiling and the interior of the closet, it was time for the moment of truth – removing the tape around the crown molding. Our preferred technique is always to remove painter’s tape while the paint is still wet. This prevents the tape from potentially peeling off any dried paint along with it, ensuring a clean, crisp line. And ladies and gentlemen, we can definitively proclaim that we observed a sincere and truly amazing difference between standard blue painter’s tape and Frog Tape. It genuinely creates a much crisper edge, with absolutely zero bleeding or stippling. Seriously, the lines were so incredibly clean and sharp that it appeared as though we had painted the ceiling before the white molding was even installed – which, for any painting enthusiast, is always the ultimate goal. In short, this incredible tape would have undoubtedly come in handy for the horizontal stripes we painstakingly added to our half bathroom a while back. We are exceptionally pleased we had the opportunity to test drive it for our little nursery paint project; it exceeded all expectations.

So, here is the room immediately after we carefully removed the Frog Tape. Isn’t that soft blue ceiling simply sweet and serene? It adds such a calming, expansive feel to the room. But this is only halfway there – the transformation is far from complete!

The Green Walls Emerge: Completing the Nursery Palette

John, clearly on a taping roll and energized by the clean lines, decided to keep the momentum going. Within approximately ten swift minutes, he had meticulously taped off the bottom edge of the crown molding, as well as around all the windows, doors, and baseboards. This precise preparation laid the perfect groundwork for the next stage of our nursery’s color journey. Then, it was time for the cheerful, warm pear green paint to make its grand debut, bringing vibrant life to the walls.

Ta-daaaa! The transformation is truly striking. Isn’t this a sweet and wonderfully playful combination? The soft pear green walls perfectly complement the serene aqua ceiling, creating an atmosphere that feels both cheerful and incredibly soothing – exactly what we envisioned for our baby’s room.

A Sea Glass Inspired Home: Unifying Our Color Palette

It’s important to mention that this particular photo was taken at night, devoid of any natural light, and was not color-corrected in any way. As a result, the colors appear a bit harsher and less subtle than they do in real life, especially when bathed in natural daylight. You’ll definitely want to stick around for some daytime pictures to truly appreciate the green and blue glory of this room in all its nuanced beauty. Once we begin to layer in all the essential elements – furniture, carefully selected art pieces, playful patterned curtains, a cozy rug, and a charming chandelier – these vibrant walls will serve as the perfect cheerful, yet not overwhelming, backdrop. We are particularly thrilled with how this nursery palette seamlessly integrates with the broader color scheme of the rest of our home. The calming blue ceiling directly relates to the soft gray-blue tones found in our bedroom and kitchen, fostering a sense of continuity and flow. Meanwhile, the lively green ties into various elements throughout our house, from the bright green headboard in our guest bedroom to the more neutral, yet subtly taupe-green, bathroom. We affectionately refer to our home’s newly defined color scheme as “sea glass inspired.” It’s a palette rich with soft creams, warm sandy neutrals, serene blues, and a diverse range of greens – all evocative of the beautifully weathered glass fragments one might discover washed up on a peaceful beach. This thoughtful integration creates a harmonious and cohesive feel throughout our entire living space.

Stay tuned for all those delightful details coming soon; the styling phase is where the room truly comes alive!

Nursery Accessories Sneak Peek

And since it seems everyone enjoys a peek into the more “lived-in” reality of our home, we snapped this photo of our living room’s console table. As you can see, it was quite bogged down with everything that used to reside in the nursery, particularly the contents of the nursery closet. The good news is that all these displaced items have since found new homes and settled in nicely. But we know you appreciate seeing our house in its glorious, slightly chaotic, transition states, so enjoy the visual!
