Project Paralysis: How to Overcome Chronic Project Stalling

Happy Halloween, everyone! No tricks here—just some treats: the show notes for Episode 22 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. This week we talk about overcoming stalled momentum on home projects and admit to one that’s had us stuck for months. We also chat with HGTV’s Nicole Curtis about rehabbing old houses, working in a male-dominated industry, and the challenges of being an open book with fans. John creates a Halloween-inspired game, Sherry gleefully removes an item from our new kitchen, and we admire cake stands. Mostly cake.

You can download this episode from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio, or listen to it below. Use this page to find links, notes, and photos we reference during the show.

What’s New

old photo

  • The photo above is from the summer, and honestly it looks the same now—no need to retake it. Below are the workbenches I’m considering; they may finally get me moving on this stalled project.

Updates

  • The Carats Double Old-Fashioned glasses from World Market came up again; that link shows the ones we mentioned and the story behind the three letters.
  • If you missed our episode about “fancy” dorm rooms, check out Episode 15 which was inspired by a BuzzFeed piece about dorm goals.
  • We also appeared on the Style Matters podcast by Little Yellow Couch—look for our interview on iTunes or listen through their episode player.

What’s Not

  • If you’re curious which odd holiday falls on your birthday, we mentioned a Weird Holidays list during the show. Tweet us with whichever quirky holiday you find on your date—or tell us what you invent if there isn’t one listed.

Nicole Curtis

  • You can watch Nicole’s show, Rehab Addict, on HGTV or the DIY Network.
  • Her book, Better Than New, is a solid read for anyone who understands the highs and lows of DIY and historic-home rehabilitation.

We’re Digging

  • We installed a smart irrigation controller (pronounced RATCH-eo) and we love it. It even sent a “watering skipped due to rain” email the other day—small joys.
  • That irrigation system is the same one featured in an Amazon Alexa commercial where a dad uses voice commands to control the sprinklers.
  • We repurposed a cake stand as a plant stand in the dining room; you might have seen it in a recent Instagram photo shared by our account.

  • Sherry spotted several cake stands that caught her eye; she found a range of styles from simple to ornate, and some affordable options can be found at HomeGoods, thrift stores, yard sales, and online marketplaces.

Psst—if you’re searching for something we featured in a past episode but can’t remember which show notes to check, we compiled a master list of everything we’ve been digging across past episodes.
