For a solid three years, we adored the serene embrace of Glidden’s Gentle Tide on our bedroom walls. It stands as a testament to perfection, being the only room we haven’t had to repaint at least twice to achieve the desired effect. However, a subtle discontent began to creep in. We realized that the crisp white crown molding, when juxtaposed with a stark white ceiling, created a rather uninspired visual. Despite the room boasting luxurious billowy floor-to-ceiling curtains, soothing blue tones, and immaculate white trim – elements that contributed to an overall polished and sophisticated ambiance – the bland white ceiling seemed to neglect what designers often refer to as the “fifth wall.” It felt like an oversight, a missed opportunity to truly elevate the space and, crucially, to accent the elegant crown molding we had painstakingly installed a while back to introduce architectural interest.

Indeed, we weren’t maximizing the room’s inherent positives, but thankfully, this was a dilemma that two modest $7 quarts of paint could effortlessly resolve. Our journey began with a critical first step: taping various paint chips onto the ceiling. This allowed us to observe them throughout different times of the day, under varying natural and artificial light conditions, to pinpoint the perfect shade. Taping swatches directly to the ceiling is an absolutely indispensable part of the process, far more effective than merely holding them against a wall. A color that appears delightfully light on a vertical wall might transform into an unexpectedly dark hue on the ceiling, or vice versa. Ultimately, our eyes were drawn to the swatch positioned at the very end of our display. While we certainly could have requested the paint store to mix a simple tint, adding more white to our wall color for an almost guaranteed match, we seized the opportunity to inject a touch of soft, unexpected interest.
