Transforming the Fifth Wall: Our Journey to a Beautifully Painted Bedroom Ceiling
For those of you who diligently follow our home improvement sagas across Facebook and Twitter, you might have pondered the enigma of our temporary relocation to the guest bedroom last weekend. The suspense, we know, was palpable! Well, it’s time for the big reveal: we embarked on an exciting adventure to paint the ceiling in our master bedroom. And let us tell you, the results are nothing short of spectacular!
One of the most rewarding aspects of chronicling our DIY endeavors is the continuous learning curve. We are far from seasoned experts who have cracked every decorating code; instead, we thrive on discovering groundbreaking-to-us insights along the way and, most importantly, sharing them with all of you. Today marks one of those truly illuminating moments we couldn’t wait to share.
Why the Fifth Wall Matters: Beyond Basic White Ceilings
For a solid three years, we adored the serene embrace of Glidden’s Gentle Tide on our bedroom walls. It stands as a testament to perfection, being the only room we haven’t had to repaint at least twice to achieve the desired effect. However, a subtle discontent began to creep in. We realized that the crisp white crown molding, when juxtaposed with a stark white ceiling, created a rather uninspired visual. Despite the room boasting luxurious billowy floor-to-ceiling curtains, soothing blue tones, and immaculate white trim – elements that contributed to an overall polished and sophisticated ambiance – the bland white ceiling seemed to neglect what designers often refer to as the “fifth wall.” It felt like an oversight, a missed opportunity to truly elevate the space and, crucially, to accent the elegant crown molding we had painstakingly installed a while back to introduce architectural interest.

Indeed, we weren’t maximizing the room’s inherent positives, but thankfully, this was a dilemma that two modest $7 quarts of paint could effortlessly resolve. Our journey began with a critical first step: taping various paint chips onto the ceiling. This allowed us to observe them throughout different times of the day, under varying natural and artificial light conditions, to pinpoint the perfect shade. Taping swatches directly to the ceiling is an absolutely indispensable part of the process, far more effective than merely holding them against a wall. The angle and way light interacts with a horizontal plane like a ceiling are profoundly different. A color that appears delightfully light on a vertical wall might transform into an unexpectedly dark hue on the ceiling, or vice versa. With all the swatches meticulously in place, it became remarkably easy to discern which ones were too purple, too gray, excessively dark, just plain “weird,” and, finally, which one was juuuust right.
Choosing the Perfect Hue: The Power of Thoughtful Selection
Ultimately, our eyes were drawn to the swatch positioned at the very end of our display. It offered a lighter, more ethereal version of our existing wall color, infused with a subtle hint of fresh celery green. While we certainly could have requested the paint store to mix a simple tint, adding more white to our wall color for an almost guaranteed match, we seized the opportunity to inject a touch of soft, unexpected interest. By opting for a swatch with a delicate green undertone, we aimed to layer in more of that coveted beachy blue-green vibe without making an overt statement. It just felt inherently fresher and subtly more exciting. While the nuances of the green might be difficult to fully appreciate in this particular photograph, its presence becomes more apparent in the subsequent image, truly adding depth and character to the space.

Just fourteen dollars later, armed with our two quarts of flat paint, we eagerly commenced our project. The color? Glidden’s Cool Cucumber – a simply gorgeous, super soft green, reminiscent of the refreshing inside of a cucumber. Interestingly, the swatch itself doesn’t appear blue at all, but once taped up in our predominantly blue room, it beautifully picked up those soft tones, creating an absolutely stunning and harmonious effect. You might wonder why we opted for two quarts instead of a standard gallon. We personally dislike paying upwards of $20 to store a bulky gallon of paint when we anticipate needing only about half of it for a project like this. Two quarts, priced around $14, provided ample coverage and left us with a manageable amount of touch-up paint that is far easier to store, being roughly a quarter of the size of a large gallon. As for the finish, we chose flat paint for a very practical reason: it is incredibly effective at camouflaging minor imperfections that might be more noticeable with eggshell or semi-gloss options. For surfaces like ceilings, a smooth, seamless appearance is highly desirable, and flat paint helps achieve just that. Here’s John, our designated roller, getting into action (while I proudly take on the role of resident cutter-inner):

The Big Reveal: Elevating the Room’s Aesthetics
The instant even a mere smidge of paint touched the ceiling, we experienced an immediate wave of affirmation; we knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that we had made the right decision. The crown molding, which previously seemed to recede into the background, adopting an “I’ll just sit here at the back of the class and act invisible” demeanor, suddenly transformed. It now commanded attention, declaring, “Oooh, I know the answer to that complicated math problem, so I’ll shout ‘pick me, pick me’ and enthusiastically flail my arm around!” The transformation was truly dramatic, allowing this key architectural detail to finally shine.
It’s truly a challenge for these photographs to capture the serene beauty of this green shade. In person, it evokes the softest piece of sea glass, gently battered by ocean waves for years, leaving behind only a whisper of celery green. This delicate hue harmonizes flawlessly with our greeny-gray-blue walls, a testament to our decision to step slightly beyond our usual comfort zone. Instead of simply adding 50% more white to the Gentle Tide formula, we ventured into a more nuanced color palette, and we couldn’t be prouder of the outcome. By no means does the ceiling scream “green!” Rather, it contributes to a sophisticated, layered aesthetic, moving away from a super matchy-matchy look. This subtle deviation from perfect coordination adds visual interest and dimensionality, making the room feel more thoughtfully designed. Moreover, it genuinely accentuates the crown molding, breaking the monotonous white-on-white scheme and allowing the molding to truly pop.

Creating an Illusion of Space: Higher Ceilings, Brighter Room
Perhaps most gratifying of all, we successfully eliminated that stark, blinding white ceiling without sacrificing the room’s airy and open feel. In a remarkable optical illusion, the ceilings actually feel higher now. The stark white paint paradoxically made them more apparent, creating a sense of being closer. In contrast, the soft, receding celery tone of the new paint makes them feel as though they extend upwards, blending seamlessly into the sky. This subtle shift in perception contributes significantly to the overall sense of spaciousness and tranquility within the room.

The interaction of light within the room has also been profoundly transformed. The gentle glow from our capiz chandelier now dances across the newly painted ceiling, making the entire room feel as though it’s radiating light from within – much like the lustrous interior of a seashell or the refreshing core of a limesicle. It’s a remarkable balance, feeling simultaneously cool and refreshing yet warm and deeply enveloping. And while this last picture might not fully capture its magnificence, the crown molding truly does rise to meet us, greeting us with renewed prominence every morning, noon, and night. Beyond the Brush: Post-Painting Care and Future Inspirations
So, that’s how we spent our last weekend, completing this impactful transformation in under three hours and for less than fifteen bucks. You might still be wondering about our temporary exile to the guest bedroom. Even though Glidden paints are generally known for their low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) content, we always prioritize limiting our exposure to paint fumes, especially given how frequently we engage in painting projects. Therefore, spending a few nights in the guest bedroom while keeping the master bedroom windows wide open and a fan running allowed for proper ventilation and dissipation of any residual odors. This brief relocation also offered an unexpected benefit: it allowed us to truly appreciate another bedroom in our home and, quite dangerously, sparked an urge to paint *that* ceiling as well! In fact, I’m now desperately eager to tackle the ceilings in both of our guest bedrooms, as well as our living room and sunroom. So, stay tuned to discover which “fifth wall” we decide to conquer next, and, of course, what captivating color we choose!
