Navigating Duplex Kitchen Design: Finding the Perfect Blend of Form and Function

Welcome back! If you recall our spirited disagreement over a refrigerator’s placement in a previous episode, you’ll understand that appliance location can spark quite the debate in our home. This time, our duplex renovation brought us to a crossroads, with two distinct kitchen layouts vying for supremacy. Join us as we unpack the competing perspectives of form versus function, detailing the journey that ultimately led to a compromise satisfying both aesthetic desires and practical needs – though not before a few days of cool-down were necessary!

Beyond the kitchen conundrum, we’re also pulling back the curtain on why this particular stage of the duplex renovation feels especially complex and “brain-bending.” We’ll share our insights on those moments when you hit a seemingly insurmountable wall and the strategies we employed to get ourselves over it. Additionally, we’re revealing a long-awaited solution to an age-old problem in our home office, providing an update on Sherry’s beloved weighted blanket, and highlighting an easy upgrade to a money-saving tool we regularly use at home. Oh, and yes, we finally cracked the code on our peculiar Instagram lock-out issue!

What’s Fresh: Duplex Progress & Renovation Milestones

We’re thrilled to share some visual updates from our ongoing duplex renovation in Cape Charles. Over the past weekend, I managed to capture a few photos showcasing the recently finished tile work. While some rooms were a bit chaotic in preparation for floor refinishing, making them less than camera-ready, rest assured we’ll unveil more comprehensive shots in the near future. Keep an eye out for that extensive tiling blog post Sherry has been promising, where we’ll delve into all the details and reveal the stunning results.

The Great Duplex Kitchen Design Debate: Form Meets Function

The kitchen is often the heart of a home, and designing two functional yet stylish kitchens for our duplex rental posed a significant challenge. Our recent debate centered on a crucial design decision that impacted both aesthetics and practicality. To truly grasp the transformations we’re discussing, let’s begin with a foundational image of the kitchen space, captured last month. While this photo shows the right side of the duplex, I’ve flipped it to align with our renderings, which consistently depict the left side. This approach should make it easier to follow our design evolution. From my vantage point in the living room, you can see the mudroom/laundry room accessed through the wood pocket doors on the left, with the characterful exposed brick chimney visible in the back right.

From Practicality to Personality: Infusing Color and Charm

Before diving into the technical renderings, it’s essential to visualize our ultimate goal: to inject vibrant color and bold patterns into these spaces. The left-side kitchen, as depicted in the following plans, is slated to feature stunning blue-green cabinets complemented by playful pink patterned tile. Since the duplex will serve exclusively as a weekly rental, we saw this as a fantastic opportunity to really embrace fun and memorable design. We believe a rental space should feel inviting and unique, offering guests an experience rather than just a place to stay.

The Original Vision: A Focus on Conventional Storage

Our initial kitchen layout, developed using Ikea’s Home Planner (a free and incredibly useful tool, especially for visualizing Ikea cabinetry in 3D), prioritized traditional storage solutions. This plan prominently featured an over-the-range microwave and a substantial run of upper cabinets. While practical for storage, a significant drawback became apparent: these upper cabinets concealed much of the exposed brick chimney, which, despite being whitewashed in reality, is depicted in red in the rendering. It created a visual obstruction, diminishing the character of the space. It’s important to note that while we’re using Ikea for cabinets, all appliances, hardware, and countertops are placeholders in these renderings, and elements like our chosen patterned tile and open shelving are yet to be digitally represented, requiring a bit of imagination.

For those interested in exploring other design software, we’ve covered several 3D home planning tools in a dedicated post.

The Pivotal Shift: Embracing Openness and Character

The turning point in our kitchen design came with the decision to eliminate the upper cabinets and instead opt for a sleeker range hood, similar to this style. This change was transformative. Suddenly, from the main living and dining room vantage point, significantly more of the historic brick chimney was exposed. The space immediately felt more open and authentic, moving away from what we perceived as a “box of bricks sitting on the counter” look. This subtle adjustment dramatically enhanced the kitchen’s character and integrated it more cohesively with the duplex’s overall charm.

A Closer Look: Different Perspectives on the Design Evolution

To fully appreciate the impact of our design revisions, let’s compare the views from another angle: the mudroom/laundry room doorway. The image below illustrates the original plan, complete with all the upper cabinets we initially thought were necessary. While this design did offer a glimpse of the chimney, our vision at the time included adding floating shelves or small ledges directly onto the brick – an idea we now realize would have still somewhat obscured its natural beauty.

Now, observe the same vantage point with our updated plan. Although this rendering still appears somewhat stark without the final finishes, imagine it adorned with our colorful patterned tile and elegant floating shelves. We’re even considering a stylish shiplap treatment for the stove wall to add texture and interest. Regardless of the final decorative touches, it’s undeniable that this revised layout offers a far more open and expansive feel. The brick chimney, now largely unobstructed, becomes a prominent feature, contributing significantly to the kitchen’s unique charm, a stark contrast to its more concealed state in the original design.

Smart Storage Solutions: Expanding into the Mudroom

To compensate for the loss of upper cabinet storage in the kitchen and enhance overall functionality, we strategically planned an adjacent pantry-like extension into the mudroom. The rendering below highlights some of the new cabinetry in this space. That wide doorway in the image is where the wood pocket doors were originally located, positioning these new mudroom cabinets just about five steps from the kitchen sink – an ideal setup for easy access. While Ikea’s planner isn’t perfectly suited for rendering laundry areas (hence the refrigerator standing in for a washer and dryer), the concept is clear. Above the laundry appliances, we envision a cabinet stretching to the ceiling, maximizing vertical storage.

A Glimpse into the Future: Cabinetry and Tile Palettes

As a reminder of our overarching design vision, here’s a look at the chosen cabinet colors and tile selections for both sides of the duplex. All our upper cabinets, along with the mudroom cabinetry, will feature a crisp white finish, providing a clean and versatile backdrop. Home Upgrades & Life Hacks We’re Loving Right Now

The Home Office Revolution: A Printer Upgrade

Our home office has seen a significant upgrade with the arrival of our new printer. This sleek device fits perfectly within the IKEA storage cabinet we acquired over seven years ago specifically to house our old printer. This particular cabinet, no longer sold, is a true workhorse, even featuring a file drawer at the bottom – a testament to its enduring design despite a few “artistic” additions from our kids on the inside of the door.

The new printer solves a long-standing frustration: the constant need to fold out and refill the paper tray every single time we wanted to print. This model cleverly stores paper in a hidden, integrated drawer at the bottom, making it incredibly convenient. As an added bonus, I recently discovered it boasts two-sided printing capabilities, a feature that not only saves paper but also streamlines our workflow. It’s these small, thoughtful upgrades that make a big difference in daily life.
