Transforming Our Kitchen: A New Door Opens Up a World of Possibilities
Our kitchen has undergone a truly remarkable transformation, a significant shift that has redefined how we interact with our home. This isn’t just a minor update; it’s a structural evolution marked by the creation of a brand-new doorway, seamlessly integrating our indoor cooking space with the vibrant outdoor world. This pivotal change has unlocked a new era of indoor-outdoor living, enhancing functionality and enjoyment in ways we hadn’t fully imagined. While our previous post detailed the creation of our inviting new kitchen porch, complete with a dedicated grilling area just steps from the stove, today we’re taking you inside to reveal the intricate process and profound impact of this exciting kitchen renovation journey. Get ready to witness the unveiling of a space that’s not only more beautiful but also infinitely more practical and delightful.

A Look Back: Our Kitchen’s Journey from Drab to Dreamy
Every great kitchen transformation story begins with a humble “before.” To truly appreciate the progress we’ve made, let’s rewind to February 2020, the moment we first laid eyes on this house. The kitchen, as it stood then, was a snapshot of a different era. Characterized by dated yellow walls and an oppressive soffit that visually shrunk the space, it was functional but lacked modern appeal and efficient design. It definitely didn’t inspire culinary adventures or comfortable gatherings.

Our initial thoughts on updating this room were first shared way back in May of 2020, even before we officially moved in. These early plans laid the groundwork for what was to become a phased, thoughtful renovation, rather than an immediate teardown. The decision not to completely gut the kitchen right away was a deliberate one, often puzzling to those who saw its potential for a full overhaul. We addressed this common question—”Why didn’t you just rip out the kitchen and redo it before moving in?!”—in a more recent kitchen update post. Living in a space before undertaking a major remodel allowed us to truly understand its shortcomings, our daily flow, and ultimately, design a kitchen that perfectly suited our lifestyle. This strategic approach ensured that every renovation step, including the addition of a comprehensive pantry, was a well-considered improvement.

The Game-Changing Door: Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living
Fast forward to today, and the transformation is nothing short of remarkable. The most significant structural change, and arguably the most impactful, is the addition of the new door. This single alteration has revolutionized how we utilize and experience our kitchen, opening up a direct pathway to our outdoor grilling and entertaining space. It’s hard to overstate just how much this new access point has enhanced our daily lives. Imagine the convenience: stepping from your kitchen straight onto a porch equipped for grilling, making impromptu outdoor meals an effortless reality. For John, this has been a revelation. He now grills dinner—from chicken and shrimp to burgers and even homemade pizza—an impressive four, sometimes five, nights a week! His passion for grilling is palpable; a recent Christmas gift of gourmet steaks from my brother-in-law was met with unparalleled excitement, a stark contrast to how we might have reacted to such a gift a year ago. We’ve gone from being casual cooks to ardent grill masters, all thanks to this newfound connection to the outdoors. The grill is now John’s favorite tool, possibly tied with his trusty miter saw, and I’m even plotting an experimental batch of chocolate chip cookies on it – so stay tuned for that delicious adventure!

Strategic Cabinetry and Maximizing Kitchen Storage
Before the new door graced our kitchen, the layout included a shorter run of cabinets directly beneath the window that now houses our new entryway. This configuration, while functional, presented certain limitations. Removing these cabinets and installing the door naturally meant some changes to our storage capacity. However, thanks to John’s meticulous calculations, we realized that the net loss of cabinet space would be minimal. His “mathy brain” deduced that we would only lose about 18 inches of linear cabinet space overall, after accounting for the significant gain from having free and easy access to a previously blocked corner cabinet. This clever accounting meant that functionality wouldn’t be sacrificed for aesthetics and flow.

Specifically, the space to the right of the dishwasher, once obscured, has been transformed into a wonderfully accessible and wide lower cabinet, topped with a functional drawer (measuring 26 inches wide). This clever reconfiguration allowed us to gain valuable, usable storage. While we did lose the small peninsula of cabinets that previously blocked this area (which was 44 inches wide), John’s calculation highlighted the effective trade-off. The net 18-inch reduction was a small price to pay for a much more optimized and open layout, proving that thoughtful design can often turn perceived losses into overall gains. The enhanced accessibility to the corner cabinet alone made a significant difference in everyday convenience.

The Outdoor Kitchen Extension: More Than Just a Grilling Spot
The true magic of this transformation extends beyond the kitchen walls. What we gained, above all, is this incredible outdoor space! While it might be a stretch to call it a full-service outdoor kitchen, it functions as a super useful and practical extension of our indoor cooking area. This covered porch offers much more than just a convenient spot for John’s grilling escapades. It provides additional covered seating, perfect for enjoying meals al fresco or simply relaxing outdoors. Beyond leisure, it’s also a more efficient way to bring in groceries, especially bulky items, streamlining daily tasks. This outdoor entertaining area has truly elevated our home’s functionality and our ability to host and enjoy our surroundings, making every meal and gathering a more open and integrated experience.

Revolutionizing Storage: Our Integrated Pantry Solution
Another monumental change that has fundamentally altered our kitchen’s functionality is the addition of an entire pantry system. Prior to this, our kitchen, like many, struggled with adequate storage, leading to cluttered countertops and inefficient organization. Now, we’ve never had so much storage space, allowing us to maintain a tidy and organized culinary environment. We delved deeper into the specifics of this transformation in this dedicated pantry update post, but it’s worth reiterating here the profound impact it has had. It was the other critical component that completely reshaped how we use this space, moving from a small kitchen challenged by storage to one that feels spacious and incredibly well-equipped.

Between this significant “storage-fest”—which includes three new drawers, six new shelves, and the cabinet conveniently located above the refrigerator—and the regained access to that previously blocked corner cabinet and its accompanying drawer, we are absolutely thrilled with our current storage capacity. In fact, the drawer positioned right next to the new door remains completely empty, a testament to our abundant storage. This extra space isn’t a problem; it’s a luxury, providing a delightful feeling of having room to spare. This excess capacity was a crucial factor in our decision to forgo traditional upper cabinets on the back wall of the kitchen. Instead, we opted for two rows of thick, chunky wood floating shelves, beautifully complemented by our cute little brass and white sconces. While conventional upper cabinets would undoubtedly allow us to store more items, our overarching goal for this home renovation has been downsizing and simplifying. This means avoiding the temptation to jam unnecessary items into every available nook and cranny. For now, a wall adorned with a beautiful tile backsplash and these sturdy floating shelves strikes the perfect balance between aesthetic appeal and practical functionality. Of course, should our storage needs evolve, upgrading to true upper cabinets remains an option for the future, but for now, this minimalist approach works wonderfully for our lifestyle.

DIY Renovation Techniques: From Cabinet Removal to Seamless Flooring
The process of removing the existing cabinet run to make space for the new door was executed with careful precision, primarily relying on a trusty hammer and pry bar. Our approach involved a slow and deliberate demolition of the old cabinetry. Critically, we salvaged the drawer and door fronts from the dismantled cabinets. This foresight allowed us to cleverly repurpose these components, crafting a perfectly matching drawer and door for the newly exposed corner cabinet. This not only saved costs but also ensured a cohesive look with our existing cabinetry.
Beneath the old cabinets, a section of flooring was, as expected, missing. Since our home features standard pine floors, sourcing matching boards was a relatively straightforward task. To ensure a flawless transition, we enlisted the same professionals who installed the new door to “feather in” the replacement flooring. This technique is far superior to simply patching a rectangular area; it involves cutting new boards to varying lengths and integrating them seamlessly with the existing floor, making the patch virtually undetectable. This meticulous attention to detail is key to achieving a professional and enduring finish in any home renovation project.

To ensure the new pine floorboards perfectly blended with the older sections, I applied the same Bona floor finish and sealer that we used previously when we had the entire floors refinished. The result was remarkable; it worked like a charm, creating a uniform and beautiful sheen across the entire kitchen floor. Looking at the finished product, it’s virtually impossible to discern where the old floors end and the new ones begin. (And yes, I noticed the runner isn’t perfectly centered in this picture – that’s just real life!). This successful blending technique is a testament to careful product selection and consistent application, proving that even tricky floor repairs can yield stunning results.

As a clever contingency, our “Hail Mary” plan for any potential difficulty in matching the new pine flooring perfectly was to save a section of existing flooring from our bedroom. We plan to add an ensuite bathroom to this bedroom in the future, which will likely involve replacing some of its current wood flooring with tile. This foresight offers a practical backup for anyone undertaking similar home improvement projects: strategically saving existing, matching wood from another area of your house that you intend to retile later can provide a perfect, authentic patch for unexpected gaps or repairs. It’s a smart way to ensure seamless floor continuity without compromising on material match.
The salvaged cabinet door and drawer fronts that we painstakingly cobbled together from the demoed pieces have exceeded all expectations. We are genuinely thrilled with the outcome! You truly cannot detect a single seam where we meticulously joined two drawer fronts and two door panels to create wider, perfectly sized counterparts for the newly revealed end cabinet. This seamless finish is a testament to the power of careful craftsmanship, a multi-step process involving successive applications of wood filler, thorough sanding, more wood filler, additional sanding, a high-quality primer, and finally, a flawless coat of paint. This DIY approach not only saved us money but also allowed us to maintain the original character and color scheme of our beloved mauve cabinets (SW Artsy Pink), demonstrating that repurposed materials can achieve a high-end, custom look.

Looking Ahead: The Next Phase of Our Kitchen Renovation
Our kitchen transformation is an ongoing journey, and we’re excited to share what’s next on the horizon. We’ve already ordered new custom cabinets for this back wall, which are currently patiently awaiting installation in our bedroom. The timing for major kitchen overhauls can be tricky, and sometimes life throws unexpected curveballs – as it did with the passing of our beloved Burger. This meant we felt too tired and sad to embark on the intense process of completely dismantling the kitchen, which involves a period without a sink or dishwasher while new counters are templated and installed. However, our plan is to tackle this significant next phase in early 2022, provided we have the energy for it.
Rest assured, our beloved mauve aesthetic is here to stay! Our new cabinet plan involves painting them this exact shade of SW Artsy Pink because we are incredibly attached to its unique charm and warmth. This ensures continuity and reinforces the signature style we’ve cultivated. In the photo above, you might still notice the seam on the front piece of the laminate counter, a subtle clue hinting at the kitchen’s former layout before we exposed that corner cabinet. But once the new cabinets, pristine counters, and a beautiful tiled backsplash are installed on that back wall, we anticipate the space will feel utterly cohesive, as if it has always been this thoughtfully designed and seamlessly integrated.
