Bathroom Bliss on a Budget: Three DIY Updates for Privacy, Style, and Organization
Every home deserves spaces that feel both functional and serene, and the bathroom is no exception. Often, privacy and organization are overlooked until they become glaring issues. In this comprehensive guide, we’re diving into three impactful, budget-friendly bathroom updates that transformed our space, proving that significant improvements don’t always require a hefty investment. From ensuring ultimate privacy at a crucial window to optimizing storage and adding decorative touches, join us as we reveal how simple DIY projects can elevate your daily routine and enhance your home’s comfort.

Privacy Perfected: Our Window Frosting Solution
One of the most immediate and, frankly, most awkward issues in our bathroom was the window. Strategically positioned directly above the toilet, it offered what could only be described as an “anti-privacy device.” While we certainly don’t live on top of our neighbors, and we’re not entirely sure how much they can discern from their distant windows, the constant awareness of a potential audience was undeniably unsettling. Stepping out of the shower or simply standing up made us acutely aware of this architectural oversight. It’s baffling that we let this situation linger for so long!

The Frosted Film Technique: Maximum Light, Ultimate Privacy
Our solution needed to strike a perfect balance: provide complete privacy without sacrificing the precious natural light that brightens the room. Our tried-and-true method? Window frosting film. We’ve had fantastic success with this material from Home Depot in previous projects, and this time, it was a zero-cost endeavor for us since we already had leftover film on hand. Typically, a large roll, enough for multiple windows and even glass doors, costs around $19 – a tiny price to pay for peace of mind.
An interesting detail about this particular window is its mullions update: just learned they’re actually muntins (those white criss-cross patterns) which are encased between the glass panes. This clever design meant we didn’t have to meticulously cut 12 individual rectangles of film; instead, we only needed two pieces to cover the entire window area. These “sneaky interior” muntins made the application process surprisingly simple and quick.
For those who prefer visual guidance, you can watch a video of the frosting process. While the video features a different window in another bathroom, the technique remains consistent. For a photographic walkthrough specifically tailored to this bathroom window, continue scrolling below:
We’ve tackled similar projects before, frosting the side door in our current house and providing an even more thorough tutorial for the basement windows of our old house. This time, instead of re-hashing the step-by-step instructions with extensive text, we’re letting the pictures do the talking. Here’s a quick visual guide to how we achieved our frosted window privacy:

And now for the big finish – the incredible transformation!

For more granular, how-to-use-frosting-film instructions, feel free to click over to this post and this post. It’s often challenging to capture the full effect of frosted film in photos, as windows tend to get overexposed. However, we’ve done our best to illustrate the dramatic difference:

You might not consciously notice the difference in future photos of our bathroom, but we’ll always know. Every time you see a picture like the one below, rest assured that we’re no longer putting on an unintended show for the neighbors. Hooray for leftover frosting film and a truly zero-dollar project that brought invaluable comfort!

Elevating the Essentials: Toilet Tank Styling
Next up, a commonly overlooked surface with significant styling potential: the top of the toilet tank. We wanted to add a touch of personality and practicality to this spot, making it both beautiful and functional. Sherry, with her keen eye for detail, spearheaded this mini-makeover.

She brought in one of her charming potted succulents, previously featured here, instantly introducing a touch of greenery and life into the space. Alongside it, we placed our DIY ‘7’ art, a project we tackled a while back and shared here. These small additions infuse character and a personalized aesthetic, transforming a utilitarian surface into a deliberate design element.

Beyond aesthetics, Sherry also introduced a small, elegant dish. This “drop-spot” serves a crucial purpose: a designated place for her earrings, which she frequently forgets about until the very last second before stepping into the shower. Previously, they’d precariously rest on the toilet rim or windowsill, risking loss. Now, they have a secure and stylish spot, eliminating a minor daily frustration. It’s these tiny, thoughtful details that truly enhance daily living and, as Sherry always says, make her all smiley.

Smart Shower Storage: Out of Sight, Out of Mind
By now, you’ve likely deciphered the “frosting” and “tanking” elements of our bathroom update trio. As for the “sucking” part of the title? Keep it clean, folks! It refers to our ingenious solution for shower organization. Let’s pull back the curtain for the big reveal!

We made the executive decision to ditch our old, over-the-showerhead caddy. Not only was it a magnet for grime and mildew, but it was also a blatant eyesore, practically visible from the bedroom door! Our goal was to find a more subtle, discreet storage option that could be largely concealed by the shower curtain. We typically keep our curtain about one-third closed when not in use (or two-thirds open, if you’re an optimist!), creating a perfect hidden zone on the opposite wall. Now, all our shampoos, conditioners, and razors can discreetly reside behind this fabric panel, out of sight from almost every angle in the room.

The Secret to Secure Suction: Innovative Locking System
Our past experiences with suction cup storage have been, shall we say, mixed. Many have succumbed to gravity, leading to frustrating crashes. However, these particular units from Bed Bath & Beyond boasted an “extra-strength locking system” that truly inspired confidence. What makes them different? They feature a hard outer cup that encases the inner suction cup. To install, you press them firmly against the wall and then swivel them, which reportedly locks them securely into place. And so far, so good! They’ve not only withstood several steamy showers but also passed the crucial overnight test, meaning we haven’t woken up to the dreaded sound of crashing toiletries.
We invested in two sturdy hooks and two practical baskets, all featuring this innovative locking suction cup design. Thanks to some savvy coupon usage (gotta love how BB&B allows multiple coupons per purchase, and they never expire!), we snagged all these items for a grand total of $22. It might sound peculiar to get excited about hidden shampoo and razor storage, but for a compact bathroom we use multiple times a day, this small change has made a remarkably decent difference. The room feels less cluttered, less chaotic, and decidedly less “college-shower-y.”

A word of caution: A reader once shared a heartbreaking story about hanging baskets falling from their wall, turning on the faucet, and covering the drain, leading to a flooded house. For safety reasons, it’s always best to avoid hanging these types of storage solutions directly over the faucet. We chose the opposite side of the shower, not only for concealment but also to prevent accidental sprays when reaching for items. Safety first, always!
The Grand Total: A Transformed Bathroom for Just $22!
So there you have it: a perfectly frosted privacy window (a zero-dollar project!), a stylishly spruced-up toilet tank (utilizing existing decor), and brilliantly hidden shower storage that truly sucks it up on the shower wall. All these impactful updates came in at an incredible total of just twenty-two dollars. It’s a testament to how thoughtful, budget-friendly DIY projects can dramatically enhance the functionality, aesthetics, and overall comfort of your home.

Our Evolving Bathroom To-Do List
