Our Journey to the Right-Sized Home: Why Less Space Might Be More

For years, the pursuit of a larger home seemed like a natural progression, a common aspiration for many growing families. We, too, fell into the trap of believing that “more value” inherently meant “a bigger house.” However, a recent and profound realization has shifted our perspective entirely: we simply don’t need as much space as we currently have. This episode delves deep into the reasons behind this epiphany, dissecting our house hunting past, the emotional and practical implications of living in an overly large home, and our vision for an optimal living environment that perfectly balances comfort, functionality, and ease of maintenance.

The Evolution of Our Housing Needs and the “Too Big House” Dilemma

It’s a common narrative: as families expand or careers flourish, the desire for more square footage often follows. For us, this journey began with smaller, cozier homes, each perfectly suited for a particular stage of life. But somewhere along the line, the pursuit of space became an unconscious default, leading us to our current residence – a beautiful house, no doubt, but one that has gradually revealed its true nature: it’s simply too expansive for our present needs and lifestyle.

Bonus room in current home, decorated in a cozy style, symbolizing underutilized space

Above, you can see the bonus room in our current home, a space that perfectly encapsulates our “too big house” dilemma. We meticulously finished this previously unfinished room, effectively adding usable square footage. Yet, with time, it has become one of several areas we could quite easily live without, alongside another couple of rooms and one that is simply disproportionately large for any practical purpose we have. This highlights a crucial lesson: simply having more space doesn’t automatically equate to better living. In fact, it often introduces new challenges, from increased cleaning and maintenance to the temptation of accumulating unnecessary items.

Our journey through different homes has been a fascinating learning curve. Below, we’ve provided a visual progression of our residences: our first house (top left), our second house (top right), and our current house (bottom). For those unfamiliar with our past projects, clicking on any of these links will take you on a full tour of each property, offering a glimpse into the evolution of our design aesthetic and spatial requirements.

Interestingly, photos can be incredibly deceiving when it comes to illustrating a home’s true scale. Our second house, for instance, appears quite modest from the street. However, it boasted a significant addition off the back that was completely invisible in front-facing images, bringing its total square footage almost exactly in line with our current, seemingly much larger, home. This experience underscored how easily one can misjudge size and how often our perception of value is tied to visible space.

We are genuinely curious to hear your thoughts on this subject. Are we alone in this revelation, or have you also experienced the shift from desiring more space to appreciating a more compact, efficient living environment? Is the grass always greener when it comes to home size? And did you, like us, once believe that “more value” in housing invariably translated to “a bigger house,” only to reconsider that notion over time? Share your experiences with us – your insights help shape our understanding of the modern housing dilemma.

Designing with Heart: The ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation Makeover

This episode brings truly exciting news about a project that touched our hearts deeply. We had the immense privilege of collaborating with the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation, a remarkable organization dedicated to supporting children battling cancer and their families. As part of a local showhouse event, we designed three distinct rooms specifically for three incredible, deserving children. Unlike typical showhouse projects where we design for imaginary occupants, this opportunity allowed us to craft spaces tailored to the real personalities, dreams, and needs of actual kids, making the experience profoundly rewarding and meaningful.

These three captivating photos offer a sneak peek into the vibrant and thoughtful children’s rooms we brought to life. Each space was designed to be a haven of comfort, creativity, and joy for its young occupant. We poured our hearts into selecting colors, furniture, and personal touches that would resonate with each child, creating environments that truly foster hope and happiness. We are diligently working on a comprehensive blog post that will feature a full gallery of photos and intricate details from this project, which we hope to share with you all very soon!

This initiative was proudly part of the annual Richmond Homearama event, a prestigious showcase we know well, having designed an entire house for it back in 2014. Coastal Charm: Our Productive Trip to Cape Charles

Our recent trip to Cape Charles a couple of weekends ago proved to be both incredibly productive and wonderfully fun, marking a significant turning point for our beach house projects. It was during this very trip that we mostly-finished the laundry room, a long-awaited transformation that has brought much-needed functionality and style to the space. But our adventures extended far beyond renovations.

Our exploration included a visit to a truly magnificent, sprawling estate just outside of Cape Charles, part of the esteemed Historic Garden Week on the Eastern Shore. The sheer grandeur of the property was breathtaking, with gardens that boasted a rich history dating back to the 1800s. Even more astonishing, the main house itself stands as a testament to time, originating from the late 1600s! Walking through these grounds felt like stepping back in time, offering a profound appreciation for historical preservation and landscape design.

In town, just a few blocks from our cherished pink house and the duplex, we discovered another architectural gem. While interior photography wasn’t permitted during the tour, we were captivated by its charming exterior, particularly its beautiful curved wraparound porch. This unique feature offered a glimpse into the distinctive character of Cape Charles’s residential architecture, blending historical elegance with inviting coastal design.

One of the most memorable and whimsical events we participated in was the “Blessing of The Worms” at the local youth garden. This delightful community event saw tons of people, especially children, gather for a truly unique celebration. The picture below captures the scene just before we all, with great enthusiasm, tipped our small cups of dirt—each cradling one “blessed” worm—into the raised garden beds. It was a wonderfully fun and educational experience for the kids, fostering a connection with nature and the joy of gardening.

Despite our busy schedule, we managed to squeeze in a refreshing trip to the beach. With temperatures soaring to nearly 80 degrees and the bay’s naturally shallow waters, it was perfectly warm and inviting for a swim. We capped off our delightful Cape Charles excursion with a visit to the town’s new candy store – a sweet end to a perfect day. Speaking of the beach house, you might recall the HGTV episode where our beach house inadvertently photobombed the background before we even got our hands on it! You can spot it on the right in the image below, with the duplex on the left. Fun fact: the wonderful couple featured in that HGTV show are the very entrepreneurs who opened the new candy store in town, adding another layer of charm to Cape Charles.

We’re Digging: Innovative Gadgets and Heartfelt Gifts

The Mesmerizing Pocket Hose: A Garden Game Changer

John couldn’t stop raving about this ingenious exterior gadget, and for good reason! Above, you’ll find a video showcasing the Pocket Hose in action, expanding as it fills with water. Did I perhaps oversell its magical qualities? Maybe a little. But honestly, it’s truly impressive! This hose has proven to be an exceptional solution for watering plants at our beach house, primarily because of its incredibly lightweight design and the unparalleled ease of storage when not in use. It collapses into a compact, manageable size, solving a common frustration of cumbersome garden hoses and making it a perfect fit for our coastal retreat.

So far, we’ve experienced no leaks or issues whatsoever, and it’s been performing beautifully. However, in full transparency, I did a deeper dive into product reviews after we recorded this episode (I confess, I bought it on a whim before our self-imposed shopping ban!). It appears the Pocket Hose is quite polarizing, with a nearly equal split between glowing 5-star reviews and critical 1-star complaints, the most common issue being leaks. I promise to keep you updated on the longevity and performance of ours. In the meantime, if you’re looking for an alternative with slightly better overall reviews, this option might be worth exploring.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Sherry found the perfect sentimental gift for her mom that beautifully represents her four beloved grandchildren. Below, you can see the elegant necklace Sherry ordered. It’s a thoughtful and personalized piece that any grandmother would cherish. For those looking for a similar sentiment to honor two parents or grandparents, they also offer a charming version featuring two larger birds, symbolizing a different family dynamic. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the special bonds within a family.
