Our journey to a beautifully functional master bathroom presented a unique design puzzle. Unlike the conventional setup with a mirror seamlessly positioned above the sink, our space featured a prominent window right where a mirror traditionally belongs. This distinctive layout, clearly visible in a snapshot taken on moving day before we embarked on removing those bi-fold doors, set the stage for a creative challenge that blended privacy needs with the pursuit of daily convenience.

While that initial photograph might portray the window in a serene, almost “glow-y and angelic” light, the reality of its position quickly became apparent. Staring directly into our neighbor’s house, especially from a side window, was far from ideal for those intimate daily routines. Brushing teeth, shaving, meticulously fixing hair, or even a quick walk through the bathroom after a shower in the buff suddenly felt less private and more like an unintended public performance. This wasn’t exactly the welcoming first impression we envisioned for our new neighbors, making a robust privacy solution an immediate and urgent necessity.
Beyond privacy, the room desperately needed a practical and conveniently placed mirror. Ironically, despite the master bathroom’s unusual configuration, it was far from being “mirror-less.” We already had a full-length mirror affixed to the water closet door – yes, we’re officially using the term “water closet” now to describe that separate little room within the bathroom.

And if you were meticulously keeping count, there was yet another mirror on the nearby medicine cabinet. This meant we had two distinct mirrors squeezed into a mere four-foot span of wall, creating an unexpected abundance in one area while leaving a significant void in another.

These images, incidentally, are treasured glimpses from older blog posts – so rest assured, our beloved dog, Burger, isn’t spending all his leisure time striking poses in our bathroom! They serve as a perfect reminder of how far we’ve come, especially since we’ve since removed the old backsplash to achieve the more streamlined look you see in the following image.

The Central Mirror Conundrum: A Quest for Front-Facing Reflection
But let’s steer our focus back to the core “mirror dilemma.” After several weeks of navigating our daily routines with what we affectionately dubbed the “mirrors-to-the-right” layout (often accompanied by playful renditions of “To The Right” instead of Beyoncé’s iconic “To The Left”), a deep-seated desire for tradition began to surface. We yearned for a mirror right in front of our faces, precisely where it should be – smack in the middle of that window. Despite an embarrassment of riches when it came to the sheer number of reflective surfaces surrounding us in the master bathroom, the one place it was most desperately needed remained conspicuously empty. This persistent need pushed us towards a less-than-traditional, yet ultimately brilliant, solution. Behold:

Embracing the Unconventional: Mounting a Mirror Directly on the Window
Some might call us audacious, perhaps even a little crazy, but our chosen path was clear: we decided to hang a mirror directly onto the window frame itself. We understood that this meant sacrificing a degree of natural light, yet we were fortunate enough to have two other expansive windows in the bedroom and a third in the main bathroom area, so the room was certainly not starved for illumination. What we absolutely would not miss was the unobstructed view of our neighbor’s home – and, more importantly, the pervasive fear that our daily tooth-brushing rituals were inadvertently creating a rather peculiar first impression. The sheer functionality this solution offered was paramount. As a man, such practical considerations are king. I honestly cannot overstate the dramatic improvement this brought to my morning shave; no longer did I have to contort my head at an awkward right angle just to see what I was doing. It was a game-changer for daily grooming efficiency and comfort.
The Search for the Perfect Fit: A Design Treasure from Lowe’s
The mirror itself is a fantastic find from the Allen + Roth collection at Lowe’s. Our quest for the ideal mirror had been quite extensive and, frankly, frustrating. We had scoured countless aisles at HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Pier 1, and World Market, primarily searching for a perfectly sized round mirror that would fit our vision. Unfortunately, our efforts were largely unsuccessful. So, when we stumbled upon this distinctively shaped and impeccably clean-lined mirror, we were more than thrilled to invest a mere $65. This was an astonishing $614 less than a similar version we had admired at Restoration Hardware – a significant saving that felt like a true victory. The installation process was surprisingly straightforward: a single screw secured it firmly into the center wooden mullion between the windows, and a small square of Velcro at the bottom provided additional stability, preventing any unwanted teetering. An ingenious bonus: thanks to the strategic placement of the window knobs at the bottom of the panes (rather than the center, where they would have been obstructed by the mirror), the windows can still be effortlessly opened and closed even with the mirror hanging in place. This thoughtful design detail ensured that functionality was not compromised for style.

The Uniqueness of Shape: More Than Just a Reflection
Let’s take a moment to truly appreciate the shape of this mirror. As we mentioned, our initial inclination was for a round mirror, as my wife believed it would beautifully soften the angular lines of the existing windows, introducing a touch of elegant curve. However, it quickly became clear that any round mirror under 28 inches in width simply wouldn’t allow both of us to view our entire faces simultaneously – a particular challenge given our ten-inch height difference – especially if it were hung perfectly centered (top to bottom) on the window, a non-negotiable point for Sherry. The serendipitous discovery of this uniquely shaped mirror felt like a genuine miracle. Its irregular form, which resembles two ovals overlapping at a 90-degree angle, provided an unexpected, crucial advantage: a little extra reflective real estate at the bottom. This added span delighted Sherry, who was positively giddy about the increased “mirror real-estate.” Her direct quote, brimming with joy, was: “Not only can I see my face, I can see my neck!” Her excitement perfectly encapsulated the success of this unconventional choice.
Beyond the Bathroom Aesthetic: Why Our Window Mirror Works
For those curious why we didn’t opt for a side-mounted, swing-out mirror – a common solution in many bathrooms – our reasoning was rooted in aesthetics. We felt such an option would lean too heavily into a “bathroom-y” utilitarian look. Our chosen window-mounted mirror, on the other hand, offered a far more decorative appeal, evoking the sophisticated charm of a “vanity in the corner of a bedroom” rather than simply a “sink across from the bed.” Furthermore, this solution brought a much-desired sense of balance to the space, and as you know, we certainly have a thing for balance in our home designs.
Streamlining the Space: Saying Goodbye to the Old Medicine Cabinet
Our master bathroom transformation, however, wasn’t truly complete until we bid farewell to the old, rather cumbersome mirrored medicine cabinet. It was a relic from the past that no longer served our vision for a clean, modern, and highly functional space.

With purpose, we carefully removed it from the wall, along with the towel bar that resided on the opposite side. We’ve since adopted a simpler, more elegant solution, now keeping a neatly folded white towel discreetly next to the sink – a method that perfectly fulfills its purpose without clutter. Both the medicine cabinet and the towel bar were thoughtfully added to our ReStore donation pile, ensuring they would find a new life and purpose in another home, rather than ending up in a landfill. This step contributed significantly to the overall decluttering and aesthetic refinement of the bathroom.

With these two key elements gone, doesn’t the space instantly feel less like a utilitarian “bathroom-sink” area and more like a thoughtfully designed part of a master suite? We don’t mean to tease, but painting the entire bedroom is next on our agenda, scheduled for today or tomorrow – woot! We’re also contemplating painting the mirror frame white, or perhaps a softer, more subtle color like gray, to help it seamlessly blend with the window moldings. Our decision isn’t 100% firm yet, so it truly could go either way, allowing for a touch more creative flexibility.
Exterior View and Ongoing Privacy: A Seamless Integration
From the exterior perspective, the mirror presents itself as a single, symmetrical light brown shape suspended elegantly in the middle of the window. There’s nothing jarring or untidy about its appearance; it surprisingly harmonizes with the natural hues of the tree trunks and other outdoor elements surrounding our home. Of course, applying a frosting treatment to the window could offer an even greater degree of privacy from the outside world. However, given that our neighbor’s house is set a considerable distance away, and with a significant portion of the window now obscured by the mirror, we are confident that their ability to discern any shapes inside has been effectively diminished. It’s a solution that works beautifully both inside and out.

Embracing the New Normal: Our Master Bathroom Transformation
Words honestly can’t adequately express how incredibly spoiled and satisfied we feel to once again have a mirror conveniently located above the sink. This simple change has profoundly rocked our world, dramatically improving our daily routines and the overall functionality of our master bathroom. And we are certainly not pioneering this concept; the idea of integrating a mirror in front of a window has been explored by many creative homeowners.
