#112: A Week Living Furniture Free

The concept of “Furniture-Free Living” has been gaining quiet traction, and it recently captivated our attention enough to prompt a personal seven-day challenge (much to Sherry’s initial reluctance!). But what exactly does it mean to live without furniture, and what profound impacts does it promise for our homes and overall well-being? Could simplifying our spaces in such a radical way genuinely lead to greater happiness, or will it merely introduce an unexpected layer of annoyance into our daily routines? This intriguing experiment forms just one facet of a recent period filled with unexpected challenges and profound reflections.

Beyond our minimalist aspirations, we also navigated the turbulent wake of Hurricane Florence, an experience that, despite sparing our home from significant damage, subjected us to an emotional rollercoaster of panic, profound relief, and then renewed anxiety. This brush with nature’s raw power left an indelible mark, serving as a powerful reminder of life’s unpredictability and the importance of resilience. On a more granular home improvement note, we tackled a peculiar challenge involving strangely placed holes in the duplex’s front doors, a common DIY dilemma that required a creative solution. And on a much lighter, yet equally personal front, Sherry is embarking on a new form of self-expression: getting a tattoo! Join us as we explore these varied experiences, share our insights, and reveal the lessons learned along the way.

Navigating Life’s Unexpected Turns: From Hurricanes to Home-Inspired Art

Life often throws unexpected curveballs, demanding both resilience and adaptability. Recently, we’ve experienced this firsthand, from bracing for a major hurricane to embracing new forms of personal expression. Here’s a closer look at what’s been happening in our world.

Reflecting on Hurricane Florence: A Brush with Nature’s Power

Hurricane Florence was a stark reminder of the immense power of nature and the importance of community preparedness. While we were incredibly fortunate to avoid any severe damage, the days leading up to and during the storm were fraught with anxiety and uncertainty. The track of the hurricane was notoriously unpredictable, keeping many in its potential path on edge. Our experience truly underscored the value of being prepared, not just physically, but mentally.

  • For those seeking to make a difference, there are many reputable organizations dedicated to aiding victims of Hurricane Florence. We found this comprehensive round-up of organizations from NPR incredibly helpful. Our personal contribution went to the Foundation for the Carolinas relief fund, an organization doing vital work on the ground.
  • This wasn’t our first rodeo with a major storm. Back in 2011, Richmond was hit by Hurricane Irene, an event that left us without power for several days and saw a large tree crash onto our neighbor’s home. You can read more about our previous hurricane experience here, which offered invaluable lessons for Florence.
  • The photo above captures the serene yet telling aftermath in Cape Charles last Saturday. Though overcast, the wind and rain were remarkably absent. The water level was noticeably higher than normal, and evidence of Friday’s surge was visible in the darker, damp sand stretching across most of the beach on the right side of the picture. Aside from this subtle mark, the town showed no overt signs of the hurricane’s passage, a testament to the storm’s shifting path and the community’s swift recovery.
  • The storm’s trajectory was truly remarkable. As illustrated in the graphic below (where Richmond and Cape Charles are marked with yellow dots), Florence performed an almost complete loop, miraculously missing our immediate area. However, it wasn’t without its local impact, as it spawned several tornadoes on its way out of Virginia, reminding us that even a glancing blow can have serious consequences. The experience left us with a renewed appreciation for our safety and a deeper understanding of disaster preparedness.

The Rise of House Tattoos: Permanently Etching Home on Skin

In lighter news, a fascinating trend has caught our eye: house tattoos! This unique form of body art speaks volumes about the emotional connection people have with their homes. It’s a way to carry a piece of your cherished dwelling, a symbol of comfort, belonging, and personal history, with you always. The idea that a home can inspire such a permanent form of art is truly captivating.

  • We’ve been fascinated by articles covering this emerging trend, exploring the various styles and heartfelt stories behind these architectural tributes. Below are some inspiring examples of house tattoos that illustrate the creativity and sentiment behind this growing phenomenon. These range from minimalist outlines to detailed renditions of beloved facades, each telling a unique story of home.

  • Sherry, ever the enthusiast for meaningful self-expression, has been actively curating a collection of tattoo inspirations. Her Pinterest boards are filled with diverse designs, from subtle and elegant to more intricate pieces, all exploring different facets of personal symbolism. While specific sources for every image are not always available, we’ve managed to track down a few, such as this one, this one, and this other example. We’ve even labeled them to make it easier for you to tell Sherry, “My favorite is number X!” as she ponders her own design. This journey into house tattoos represents a deeper exploration of how our environments shape us and how we choose to honor those connections.

Embracing the Furniture-Free Lifestyle: Our Week-Long Experiment

The concept of “furniture-free living” might sound extreme, but it’s an increasingly popular movement rooted in minimalism, improved physical health, and a desire to declutter both our homes and minds. It challenges conventional notions of comfort and encourages a more active, intentional engagement with our living spaces. We were so intrigued by its potential benefits that we decided to embark on a week-long “light” version of this lifestyle experiment.

Exploring the Philosophy Behind Furniture-Free Living

The inspiration for our challenge came from several compelling articles. Apartment Therapy’s deep dive, “I Tried Furniture-Free Living for a Week to See if I Felt Healthier,” provided a particularly insightful perspective, with the author’s conclusions proving incredibly thought-provoking. Similarly, Scary Mommy’s article on the subject offered another practical viewpoint on how this lifestyle can impact family dynamics. It turns out this isn’t a completely novel concept; a 2016 profile in Good Housekeeping even showcased a family who embraced a radical, long-term furniture-free approach, replacing traditional items with more dynamic, movement-oriented structures.

The core idea is to foster better posture, increase movement throughout the day, and create a less cluttered, more flexible home environment. Proponents suggest it can alleviate back pain, improve circulation, and even boost creativity by encouraging varied body positions. It’s about breaking free from the sedentary habits often encouraged by modern furniture and reclaiming natural movements.

Our “Light” Version of the Challenge and Its Parameters

Given our family life and initial reservations (mostly Sherry’s!), we opted for a modified, “light” version of the furniture-free challenge for one week. Our specific parameters are designed to push us out of our comfort zones without completely upending our daily lives, especially since our children will continue to use furniture as they normally would.

  • Work Standing Up: The most immediate change involved saying goodbye to our beloved desk chairs. For the entire week, all work activities requiring a desk must be performed while standing. This is intended to combat prolonged sitting, a known contributor to various health issues.
  • No Living Room Furniture During Waking Hours: This rule applies specifically when our children are awake. While we can still decompress on the couch at the very end of the day once they’re asleep, during active hours, sitting on living room furniture is off-limits. This means we’re relegated to sitting on the floor, standing, squatting, or kneeling for relaxation and interaction. It’s an interesting way to reconnect with the floor space we so often ignore.
  • Try to Eat Meals Standing: Wherever it makes practical sense (definitely not at restaurants!), we are attempting to eat our meals while standing. This particular rule has proven to be Sherry’s least favorite, highlighting the ingrained habits of mealtime comfort.
  • *Crucially, our children are still able to use our furniture as they normally would, ensuring their comfort and routine are not disrupted by our experiment.

We are eager to see how these adjustments impact our physical energy levels, mental clarity, and overall perception of home. Will it lead to unexpected discoveries about our bodies and habits, or simply a week of awkward discomfort? We’ll be back next week to share a full report on how our furniture-free experiment turned out, including all the highs, lows, and any surprising revelations!

Solving the Duplex Door Dilemma: A Handleset for All Our Woes

Renovating older properties often comes with a unique set of challenges, and our duplex was no exception. One particularly vexing issue involved the front doors: a haphazard array of old, misaligned holes left from previous hardware installations. As you can see in the photo above, it was a veritable Swiss cheese of perforations, making it incredibly difficult to install new handlesets without either seeing unsightly old holes or having to undertake extensive (and expensive) patching and painting. Our constant refrain was, “Why? WHY?!?” This seemingly small detail became a significant headache, threatening to mar the aesthetics of our newly updated entrance.

  • After much searching, we finally discovered this handleset, a true game-changer. Its thoughtful design perfectly covered all the existing holes, creating a clean, even, and professionally finished look without the need for complicated repairs. We ordered them in the sophisticated dark bronze color, which added a touch of elegance and warmth to the doors. While we didn’t manage to get an installed photo in time for this article, the online image below provides an excellent representation of how seamlessly these handlesets integrate, solving a persistent DIY frustration with impressive efficiency and style. This experience was a powerful reminder that sometimes, the simplest product design can offer the most profound solution to common renovation headaches.
