Happy Friday, fellow home renovators and DIY enthusiasts! This week has been a whirlwind of progress, with the initial days dedicated to substantial, larger-scale projects. We’ve been tackling everything from some truly wild design choices and embarking on a massive desk haul and comprehensive overhaul, to making significant strides in our showhouse transformation. After diving deep into broad planning and intricate design debates, like optimizing office layouts and meticulously arranging showhouse furniture, there’s a unique satisfaction that comes from switching gears. It’s incredibly refreshing to shift focus towards knocking out a few smaller, yet incredibly impactful, updates at the tail end of the week. These quick wins, like yesterday’s effortless mirror switch, offer an immediate sense of accomplishment and keep the motivation high. And thankfully, the latest update we embarked upon in the kitchen couldn’t have been simpler, yet its effect was truly transformative.
For those who have been following our home improvement journey, you’ll surely remember our charmingly outdated almond-colored dishwasher. It stood out – not in a good way – as a relic of a past kitchen era, nestled incongruously amidst our evolving decor. It was one of those appliances that, while perfectly functional, desperately longed for a modern facelift to blend seamlessly with our developing kitchen aesthetic.

As part of our long-term vision, we fully intend to replace all our major kitchen appliances during a comprehensive kitchen renovation down the line. However, the thought of living with this particular almond eyesore for an indefinite period was less than appealing. Then, a remarkable tip began circulating through our community – an idea that sounded almost too good to be true, yet promised a swift and budget-friendly solution. Many of you reached out with what could only be described as an “urban legend” in the DIY world: the possibility that many older appliances, particularly dishwashers, come equipped with easily removable panels. These panels, typically the prominent colored sections, might be designed to be reversible, painted, or even swapped out, offering an instant aesthetic upgrade without the need for a costly replacement. The concept intrigued us immensely, and driven by curiosity and a desire for an immediate change, I decided to put this intriguing rumor to the test with some exploratory unscrewing.

Approaching the task, I expected a degree of complexity, perhaps hidden fasteners or challenging removal processes. However, to my pleasant surprise, the operation was astonishingly straightforward. With just three small screws removed from the side panel of the dishwasher, the slim metal trim piece that framed the main panel came off with surprising ease. This initial step instantly revealed the underlying structure and confirmed the viability of this DIY appliance hack. It was a clear indication that the rumors held a kernel of truth, boosting my confidence to proceed further. This moment was crucial; it transformed a tentative exploration into a genuine project, promising a potentially significant visual improvement with minimal effort and absolutely zero financial outlay – the epitome of a smart, budget-friendly kitchen refresh.

The anticipation mounted as the trim piece was carefully set aside. With the fasteners loosened and the framing removed, the main panel itself was ready for extraction. And then, lo and behold, with a gentle tug and slide, out popped the removable panel, revealing its hidden potential. The true revelation, however, wasn’t just its removability, but what lay on the other side. To my utter delight and genuine surprise, the backside of the almond panel was a pristine, bright white! This discovery was a game-changer, instantly validating the “urban legend” and opening up immediate possibilities for a much-needed aesthetic transformation in our kitchen. It felt like finding a secret compartment, only instead of hidden treasure, it offered a stylish, modern upgrade.

Upon pulling the entire assembly out, a further interesting detail emerged: there weren’t just one, but two separate panels neatly stacked within the dishwasher door. Even more fascinating was the fact that each of these panels was double-sided. This meant we had a total of four potential surfaces to choose from! To truly appreciate the visual contrast and the drastic change this simple hack offered, I couldn’t resist snapping a side-by-side photograph. On one side, the original cream-colored (or almond, as we’ve been calling it) panel, a testament to its era. Next to it, the bright, fresh white surface, promising a modern update. The dark, somewhat industrial-looking material visible behind them in the photo was simply a cardboard backing, not a permanent part of the dishwasher’s exterior design. This dual-panel, double-sided discovery not only confirmed the incredible versatility of this appliance design but also presented us with unexpected choices for our kitchen’s aesthetic direction, all without purchasing a single new item.

As I explored the various sides, another curious option presented itself. On the backside of what we’d designated as the “cream” panel, a distinct mustard-yellow hue peeked out. Now, while daring color choices certainly have their place in some kitchen designs – perhaps a retro-themed space or a bold, eclectic interior – this particular shade of mustard was, shall we say, an “interesting” choice for our evolving kitchen aesthetic. It was so unexpected and frankly, quite startling, that I couldn’t resist holding it up just to gauge John’s reaction. Predictably, it provoked a moment of humorous bewilderment, serving as a stark reminder of how much kitchen styles and color palettes have shifted over the decades. It underscored the fortunate discovery of the more versatile white and black options!

With the various options laid out, the initial instinct was to go with the bright white. After all, white is synonymous with clean, modern kitchen design, and many of our upper cabinets and open shelving are precisely that color. It seemed like the natural, most logical choice to create a harmonious and airy feel. So, I carefully slid the white panel back into place, reattached the side trim, and stepped back, camera in hand, fully prepared to marvel at the anticipated dramatic improvement. I envisioned a seamless integration, an instant brightening of the space. However, to my surprise and slight disappointment, the reality didn’t quite live up to the expectation. While it was indeed white, and matched the upper elements, something about it just didn’t sit right. Among the sea of darker lower cabinets and the general earthier tones of our current kitchen layout, the white dishwasher panel seemed to draw *more* attention to itself, rather than blending in. It created an abrupt visual break, highlighting its presence rather than allowing it to recede gracefully into the overall design. It was a valuable lesson in design: what works in one area or for one element doesn’t always translate perfectly to another, especially when considering the entire room’s palette and flow. Sometimes, the obvious choice isn’t the best one for true cohesion.

Undeterred by the initial white panel misstep, and armed with the knowledge that the panels were reversible, I quickly set about trying the next available option. I removed the panel once more, recalling that the backside of the white panel was a deep, sophisticated black. Given our kitchen’s existing palette of dark lower cabinets, this seemed like a far more promising direction for achieving that coveted integrated look. I flipped the panel over to its black side, slid it back into position, and reattached the trim. Stepping back this time, the transformation was immediate and undeniably significant. “MUCH better,” I exclaimed, the difference palpable. The black panel instantly harmonized with the surrounding darker cabinetry, allowing the dishwasher to recede and become a much less noticeable, more cohesive part of the kitchen’s design. It no longer screamed “outdated appliance” but rather settled quietly into its spot, an almost invisible upgrade that achieved exactly what we were aiming for: a subtle yet impactful visual improvement that enhances the overall flow and aesthetic of the kitchen. This simple flip proved that sometimes the most impactful changes are the ones that help elements blend in, rather than stand out.

While it’s true that this dishwasher may still not be the absolute prettiest appliance ever manufactured, for the mere 10 minutes of effort and the grand total of zero dollars spent, I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome. We’ve successfully banished a significant portion of that “almond” hue from the room, and the black panel undeniably helps the dishwasher blend much more seamlessly with its surrounding cabinetry. This simple DIY appliance hack is a testament to how small, intelligent changes can yield impressive results in a kitchen refresh without breaking the bank or undertaking a full-scale renovation. But the possibilities for customizing these panels extend far beyond just flipping them. Imagine spray painting the panel a vibrant color – perhaps a bold red for a retro-inspired kitchen, or a deep navy to match a modern farmhouse aesthetic. With the right primer and appliance-appropriate paint, you could achieve virtually any color. For those craving the sleek, contemporary look of stainless steel, you could even purchase a sheet of stainless steel from a home improvement store like Home Depot, cut it precisely to size using metal snips, and adhere it to the existing panel for a remarkably convincing stainless finish. Alternatively, consider applying a decorative vinyl wrap or even covering it with a thin wood veneer to match custom cabinetry, achieving a truly integrated look. The sheer array of options for personalizing these removable panels is vast, making this a highly versatile and budget-friendly solution for updating outdated appliances.
The best part about this easy, low-commitment switch wasn’t just the updated dishwasher itself, but the incredible burst of momentum it generated. That quick win truly kicked us into high gear, reigniting our passion for kitchen improvements and propelling us forward on several other projects that have been on our to-do list. It’s amazing how a small victory can inspire bigger undertakings. As a result, our kitchen has become a hub of activity once again, and we’re currently deep into some exciting transformations:
- First on the list is finally addressing our long-broken trash compactor. It’s an outdated and non-functional appliance that has simply been taking up valuable space. We are in the process of removing it to make way for something far more functional and aesthetically pleasing in its place – likely integrated storage or a recycling station that aligns with modern kitchen functionality and our desire for a clutter-free space. This removal is not just about aesthetics; it’s about optimizing the kitchen’s practical layout.

- Perhaps the most dramatic ongoing project is the long-awaited redo of our kitchen counters. We’re finally tackling them with concrete, and holy cow, it’s a messy process – but the initial results are showing such a dramatic and modern change! The transformation from our old countertops to the sleek, industrial look of concrete is incredible, fundamentally altering the feel of the entire kitchen. While the labor involved in preparing, pouring, and finishing concrete counters is substantial, the end result promises a durable, contemporary surface that will anchor our updated kitchen design.

We absolutely love hearing from our community! Has anyone else stumbled upon the secret of flipping their dishwasher panel, or discovered other ingenious ways to update their appliances without a full replacement? We’re still incredibly happy with the results of our painted refrigerator facelift, the character and functionality added by our secondhand range hood installation, and the clever space-saving solution of relocating our microwave to the pantry. With the dishwasher now updated, our last remaining almond-colored eyesore in the kitchen is the stove – another challenge we’ll eventually tackle with a creative solution. Have any of you used Ardex or similar products on your countertops, or undertaken the task of removing an old, broken garbage disposal? Kitchen updates, by their very nature, can be incredibly disruptive, turning the busiest room in the house into a construction zone. Yet, there’s an unparalleled sense of satisfaction and enjoyment once they’re completed, making all the effort and temporary chaos entirely worthwhile.
