Why Charleston is the Perfect Family Vacation

Since our family made the exciting move to Florida three years ago, our approach to vacations has subtly but significantly evolved. What once drew us to destinations primarily for their beaches and pools has shifted, as these amenities are now right in our backyard. Our new travel preferences lean heavily towards vibrant, walkable cities or charming small towns that boast a rich tapestry of sights, unique shops, inviting parks, and diverse culinary scenes. Charleston, with its quintessential Southern charm and historic allure, fit this new ideal perfectly.

With our children now aged 9 and 13, their interests have also matured beyond the typical playgrounds and children’s museums. They thrive on genuine exploration, engaging with local culture, and discovering hidden gems around every corner. This change in dynamic means we can now fully embrace destinations like Charleston, which offer a deeper, more immersive experience. While every aspect of our Charleston trip was undeniably kid-friendly (and dog-friendly, as you’ll soon see!), its appeal might resonate most with families whose children appreciate architectural beauty, historical narratives, and the joy of simply wandering through picturesque streets rather than needing constant, structured entertainment. Charleston truly offers an enriching and relaxing escape for the whole family, providing a blend of history, beauty, and modern delights that caters to a wide range of interests.

Our Charming Charleston Accommodation

The spontaneous nature of this trip was largely thanks to a fortuitous discovery: an incredible Airbnb find that happened to be available at a last-minute discounted rate. As connoisseurs of a good deal, we couldn’t resist! Our three-night stay in “The Poppy Suite” was nothing short of delightful. This meticulously managed rental, consistently praised in numerous reviews, immediately won us over and solidified our decision to book.

We occupied the charming upstairs unit, “The Poppy Suite,” but it’s worth noting that the downstairs unit is also available from the same exceptional host, along with several other listings across Charleston. We truly cannot recommend this property enough. It was impeccably decorated, spotlessly clean, and thoughtfully stocked with everything a family (and their dog!) could need. The only potential consideration for some travelers might be the single bathroom, but as a family well-versed in mastering the one-bathroom challenge, it was a non-issue for us.

The layout perfectly accommodated our family. Our daughter enjoyed the cozy middle bedroom, while our son delighted in the cute bunkroom at the back. Sherry and I claimed the front bedroom, primarily for its direct access to the inviting front balcony, which quickly became our favorite sanctuary. We spent several blissful hours out there each day, escaping the heat and enjoying the refreshing breeze while reading and simply unwinding. It served as a perfect respite from our city explorations, especially during the peak afternoon warmth, offering a shaded oasis to recharge.

Beyond the suite’s amenities, its strategic location was a major draw. Situated in the vibrant Cannonborough/Elliotborough neighborhood, it offered easy walkability to an array of fantastic restaurants, quaint coffee shops, and diverse local attractions. This prime spot allowed us to truly experience Charleston like locals, stepping out each morning directly into the heart of its captivating energy.

Exploring the Historic Streets of Charleston

With just two full days to soak in the essence of Charleston, we decided to dedicate one day to the city’s historic core and another to exploring the charming coastal communities nearby. Our travel philosophy for this trip was decidedly “go-with-the-flow,” favoring serendipitous discoveries over a rigid schedule of popular historical sites or museums. While Charleston abounds with such attractions – perfect for families seeking a deeper dive into history – we opted for an organic exploration of its streets and character.

Our city day began with a leisurely stroll from our Spring Street Airbnb, leading us directly to the famed King Street. This bustling artery of Charleston is a vibrant blend of upscale boutiques, eclectic shops, and diverse eateries. As we meandered, we popped into intriguing stores, sampled local flavors, and, most notably, simply absorbed the stunning architecture that defines this Southern gem. Every corner revealed a new visual treat, from grand historic mansions to quaint, colorful facades.

One could easily spend an entire day, or even more, simply admiring the city’s architectural heritage. The iconic Charleston “single houses” with their distinctive side piazzas (often featuring a charming “hospitality door” that opens directly onto the porch) were a constant delight. Guided walking tours, which looked absolutely fascinating, are definitely on our list for a future visit, offering a deeper understanding of the city’s rich past. But for this trip, the joy was in our unscripted meanderings, allowing Charleston to reveal itself to us at its own pace.

Charleston exuded a unique blend of timeless elegance and vibrant contemporary life. Despite its ancient homes and preserved historical details, the city felt incredibly lively and bursting with color, especially since our visit coincided with everything being in full bloom. And let us tell you, this city has an undeniable love affair with window boxes – each one a miniature masterpiece of flora!

Our explorations even led us to Charleston’s own French Quarter, where we stumbled upon this stunning bright pink Huguenot Church. Its vivid hue was an unexpected pop of color amidst the historic surroundings, echoing the lively spirit we’ve come to associate with other beloved Southern cities, like New Orleans, another family favorite.

No visit to Charleston is complete without a stop at its most iconic and Instagrammable spot: Rainbow Row. This picturesque series of brightly colored Georgian houses along East Bay Street is a feast for the eyes and a testament to the city’s vibrant character. Finding it is a breeze, as it’s clearly marked on both Apple and Google Maps, ensuring everyone gets to experience its unique charm.

Our first day of urban exploration saw us clocking approximately 6 miles of walking. For a family accustomed to regular walks around our neighborhood, this mileage was easily managed, especially as it was strategically broken up. We took a relaxing mid-day break back at our Airbnb, enjoying the AC indoors (while Sherry and I savored the breezy balcony). This, combined with frequent stops for meals and browsing shops, kept everyone energized and enthusiastic. It’s proof that with a good rhythm of activity and rest, exploring Charleston on foot is an incredibly rewarding experience for families.

A Shopper’s Paradise in Charleston

Charleston’s shopping scene, particularly around King Street, is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. Our approach was simple: wander and follow whatever caught our eye. This led us to some truly unique and memorable establishments. Imagine stepping into the Amanda Lindroth store, a veritable tented rattan paradise filled with exquisite home decor that transported us to a sophisticated tropical retreat.

As avid readers, visiting independent bookstores is a cherished tradition during our travels. We were thrilled to stumble upon Blue Bicycle Books, a charming haven for bibliophiles. Though we somehow missed the equally popular Buxton Books further down King Street, it’s clear Charleston has a thriving literary scene.

While dedicated kid-specific stores were not abundant (aside from Wonderworks Toys in the Charleston City Market), our 9 and 13-year-olds found endless fascination in a variety of other shops. They were surprisingly captivated by the fragrant offerings at the Old Whaling Company, where they spent time smelling soaps. The Mitchell Hill Gallery, a unique blend of art gallery and furniture store, provided a wonderful opportunity for us all to appreciate contemporary art. Our children, who have developed a connoisseur-like appreciation for pens and felt-tip markers, particularly enjoyed the array of stationery at Mildred Newberry.

And of course, no Charleston shopping excursion would be complete without a stop at Sewing Down South, the popular pillow store founded by Craig Conover of Bravo’s Southern Charm. Though Sherry’s playful whispers of “Craig?!” and “Paige?!” throughout town yielded no Bravolebrity sightings, the store itself was a vibrant and fun experience, full of colorful designs.

Interestingly, despite all the fantastic options within downtown Charleston, our two absolute favorite stores of the entire trip were located just over the bridge, closer to the city’s beautiful beaches, hinting at the diverse retail experiences waiting beyond the historic peninsula.

Beyond the City: Exploring Charleston’s Beaches and Surrounds

While beach vacations are no longer our primary travel motivation, living so close to the ocean, we were still eager to explore the renowned coastal communities of Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island. A friend’s insider tips on local eateries and unique activities sealed the deal, making a morning drive out to these barrier islands an exciting part of our Charleston itinerary.

We started our beach adventure at Isle of Palms, parking conveniently near The Boathouse at Breach Inlet. IOP is notably accommodating for dogs on the beach, making it perfect for our furry companion, Penny. The morning walk was invigorating, marked by fascinating shell finds and Penny’s enthusiastic sniffing of every new scent. Post-beach, our quest for coffee and brunch led us to a truly remarkable store on Sullivan’s Island: A Maker’s Post. This establishment was a harmonious blend of curated art, unique housewares, and lush plants, an absolute treat for the senses. Both kids walked out with newly purchased books, a testament to its broad appeal.

The above photo, shared on Instagram, garnered immense interest, with Sherry’s DMs flooding with inquiries for its name. You won’t miss A Maker’s Post; it’s right next to the bright pink The Co-Op, where we ultimately grabbed our much-needed coffee.

Our other standout discovery on the outskirts of Charleston was Plant House in the more suburban area of Mount Pleasant. After the family’s enthusiasm for A Maker’s Post, I took the initiative to Google “plant store” and struck gold. I must say, I felt quite heroic! This store quickly became one of the trip’s highlights.

While we later learned Plant House is a chain with seven locations across the Southeast (even one in our former hometown of Richmond, VA!), it was entirely new to us in Charleston. We ended up spending the longest amount of time here compared to any other store on our trip. The place is an absolute botanical wonderland, brimming with every plant and pot imaginable, making it a joy just to browse. But the real magic lies in their unique offering:

…their fantastic DIY terrarium stations! For just $25 each, our children embarked on a creative journey, crafting their own plant terrariums. They selected two small plants and a round glass vessel, then had free rein over an array of “toppings” like soil, sand, rocks, shells, and moss. A friendly staff member guided them through each step, making the experience incredibly engaging and fun for both kids. Sherry even lent a helping hand when our son occasionally requested assistance.

The Plant House staff were exceptionally welcoming and knowledgeable, offering excellent advice on both construction and care for the terrariums. What’s more, you can simply walk in and create one anytime! They also host scheduled workshops for adults, and surprisingly, even feature a bar with alcoholic beverages, adding another layer of charm to this unique establishment.

As enjoyable as all our shopping and activity discoveries were, the true stars of our Charleston adventure were undoubtedly the incredible meals we shared.

A Culinary Journey Through Charleston Eats

While we wouldn’t categorize ourselves as fine dining aficionados, our vacation philosophy centers around discovering establishments with truly delicious food and a lively, welcoming atmosphere. Charleston, with its celebrated culinary scene, exceeded all our expectations on this front. Get ready for a gastronomic tour of our favorite spots!

Breakfast in Charleston

Each morning, we indulged in fantastic breakfast at charming neighborhood spots, all just a short walk from our Airbnb. Our first morning led us to Daps Breakfast & Imbibe, an absolute gem. Here, we savored excellent coffee alongside colossal egg sandwiches and pancakes of truly epic proportions. In hindsight, the kids definitely could have shared an order, as even we were surprised by their sheer size! I recall thinking a “side” of pancakes with my own order would have comfortably fed both of them. Our daughter delightedly chose the Fruity Pebble pancakes, a whimsical creation, while our son opted for a rich cocoa-dusted version.

Our second breakfast took us to Holey City Bagels, which instantly earned points for its clever name—a nod to Charleston’s affectionate nickname, “the Holy City.” But beyond the pun, the bagels themselves were a revelation, offering the closest experience to an authentic New York-style bagel we’ve found in a long time. The attached coffee shop also provided the perfect complement to our morning meal, making it an ideal start to another day of exploration.

Lunch & Dinner In Charleston

For lunch and dinner, two more fantastic, walkable spots near our Airbnb were Pink Cactus and Fuel Cantina, both serving delicious Mexican cuisine. Pink Cactus, initially unassuming from the street with its patio cleverly occupying a few parking spaces, surprised us with its incredibly flavorful and generously portioned dishes. While they don’t offer a specific kids’ menu and prefer not to make substitutions, both of our children, who appreciate a touch of spice, thoroughly enjoyed their meals. We later learned from a local at Plant House that her friends drive 40 minutes just to eat there, underscoring its devoted following.

Fuel Cantina, on the other hand, truly excelled in the outdoor atmosphere department. Housed in a former gas station, its back patio, where we dined, was the quintessential setting for a beautiful summer evening. Picture twinkling string lights, a large TV, cooling fans, and even bocce and giant Jenga to keep the kids happily entertained. The transformation of this space into a vibrant dining destination was truly impressive.

The photo above was taken the following morning during our walk to Holey City, explaining its closed appearance. However, the evening prior, I managed to snap the picture below on our way to the patio. The restaurant ingeniously embraced its past as a gas station, repurposing actual fuel pumps into unique wall sconces – a brilliant touch that truly committed to the theme!

Another wonderfully relaxed meal, brimming with fantastic atmosphere, was our dinner at the Port of Call Food Hall. This spot offered a diverse array of options, satisfying everyone’s cravings – I enjoyed delicious Greek food, one child opted for seafood, and the rest savored gourmet smash burgers. The communal seating area was spacious and comfortably shaded, perfect for unwinding. For dessert, we all ventured into new territory, trying pineapple soft serve for the first time at The Pineapple Hut, a sweet and refreshing end to our meal.

Perhaps the culinary highlight of our entire trip, food-wise, was at The Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan’s Island. A friend had recommended it as a place with “fantastic food where you could dress up a bit,” which initially made us hesitant, as our luggage was decidedly casual. However, a drive-by around 11 am revealed several families enjoying lunch on the patio in very relaxed attire, so we decided to go for an early lunch. And oh, are we glad we did! The experience was truly unforgettable.

I savored the special of the day: a peach flatbread pizza exquisitely drizzled with balsamic – it was a flavor revelation that hit every spot. The kids happily shared a cheese flatbread and some pasta, both enthusiastically declaring it “the best” they’d ever had. Sherry indulged in a delectable ahi tuna special, perfectly complemented by a creamy sauce and tender potatoes. This was the only meal where absolutely no leftovers remained; we quite literally licked our plates clean. Yes, that entire peach pizza found its happy home in my belly!

To cap off this phenomenal meal, we ventured next door to BeardCat’s Sweet Shop, conveniently located in the same building. Even with a small size, you get to choose two flavors! Sherry and I opted for a daring yet delicious combination of dark chocolate and olive oil with a sprinkle of salt gelato. The olive oil was literally drizzled on top, a choice I was initially skeptical of, but it transformed into an unexpectedly delightful and extremely good dessert.

Is Charleston Dog Friendly? Our Experience with Penny

A resounding “Yes!” Charleston proved to be incredibly dog-friendly, making our trip with Penny, our beloved chorkie, seamless and enjoyable. From our charming Airbnb to the expansive beaches and the majority of outdoor restaurants, Penny was welcomed with open arms. The fantastic weather during our stay allowed us to dine al fresco for every single meal. For certain breakfast spots and the food hall, this meant one of us would stay outside with Penny while the others placed our order – a small, common practice we’re used to from home and absolutely no big deal.

Given Penny’s small stature, we typically carry her whenever we enter a shop, primarily for her safety and peace of mind, as well as ours. This prevents her from getting into mischief under displays, being startled by an unexpected shop cat, or accidentally knocking something over with her leash. We also make it a point to politely ask an employee, “Is it okay to bring our dog in here?” just to be absolutely sure. Without exception, every establishment was more than happy to welcome her! And, of course, our little Penny was the only family member who occasionally requested to be carried outside when her tiny legs needed a break from walking – a true #spoiled traveler!

As highlighted in our Airbnb hosts’ helpful guide, many of the Charleston area beaches are also dog-friendly. However, it’s crucial to remember that rules regarding pets can vary significantly by specific beach area and time of year. Always be sure to check the local regulations before heading out. During our visit in May, we had absolutely no issues enjoying the beautiful beaches of Isle of Palms with Penny by our side.
