Life often unfolds in a beautiful, albeit sometimes unorganized, tapestry of experiences. Lately, our journey has felt like a vibrant smorgasbord – a delightful mix of personal milestones and exciting new professional ventures. While it can be challenging to distill such a rich array of experiences into a neatly themed blog post, the underlying current is undeniably positive: we’re gaining significant momentum on a goal we’ve long cherished. Our focus is increasingly shifting towards “off-campus” projects, endeavors that extend beyond enhancing our own living spaces to make a tangible difference in the wider community.

This shift represents a meaningful evolution in our design philosophy, allowing us to channel our passion for creating beautiful and functional spaces into projects that serve a greater good. We’re increasingly seeking opportunities where our skills can contribute to causes close to our hearts, often for non-profit organizations or initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable populations. A prime example of this new direction is our involvement with the Homearama Showhouse, a project undertaken in collaboration with Habitat For Humanity. This incredible experience has allowed us to contribute to providing safe and welcoming homes, deepening our commitment to community-driven design. You can delve deeper into our journey with that project here and here.
Spreading Cheer: A Special Project at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU
As if the Habitat for Humanity project wasn’t exciting enough, our plates have recently become even fuller with another incredibly special invitation: to help decorate a family waiting room at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU! This project holds immense personal and professional significance for us, allowing us to apply our design expertise in a profoundly impactful setting.

The hospital reached out, hoping we could volunteer our time to infuse warmth and coziness into a waiting room that serves countless families throughout the year. Beyond creating a welcoming atmosphere, the specific request was to add festive touches for the upcoming holiday season. The moment we heard about the “Spread Cheer” campaign and the deserving purpose behind this initiative, we knew we had to be involved. This particular room often becomes a temporary home for families whose children are receiving care, especially during the holidays. Our mission is to transform it into a serene yet joyful sanctuary, a space where families can find a moment of comfort amidst challenging times.

This project has quickly proven to be a uniquely engaging and rewarding challenge. While we’re accustomed to creative freedom in residential design, a hospital environment presents a distinct set of parameters. Certain existing elements must remain, while others offer flexibility. Crucially, every design choice must meticulously account for safety, sanitary protocols, and ease of maintenance – considerations that are paramount in a children’s medical facility. It’s a delicate balance between fostering a comforting, home-like atmosphere and adhering to stringent healthcare standards.
Note: It’s important to clarify the intended users of this specific space. The hospital already provides vibrant playrooms and arts & crafts rooms for the children. This family waiting room is specifically designed to cater to the needs of the entire family. While incorporating playful elements for children is part of the brief, the overarching vision from the hospital staff is to create a soothing, calm, and homey environment where everyone feels at ease.
Navigating Design Constraints: Creating Comfort in a Clinical Environment
The timeline itself is a significant hurdle, with the holidays fast approaching and our first planning meeting having just taken place last week. This means we’re on an accelerated learning curve, rapidly familiarizing ourselves with the specific sensitivities of designing in a medical context. We’re gaining a crash course in understanding how vital factors like function, cleanliness, and infection control dictate every aesthetic decision. For instance, common home decor items like plush pillows or baskets overflowing with toys – things we wouldn’t think twice about in our own homes – are absolute non-starters here. They are simply too difficult to keep sanitized to the rigorous standards required in a healthcare setting, highlighting the critical difference between residential and institutional design.

Despite these unique constraints, or perhaps because of them, the creative process has been incredibly stimulating. Sherry has pulled together an initial mood board, a dynamic collection of our early ideas, which we’re thrilled to share. It’s a living document, destined to evolve at hyper-speed given our tight turnaround, but it provides a clear glimpse into our vision for transforming this essential space.

Our Vision: A Detailed Look at the Mood Board Concepts
Here’s a breakdown of the key elements we’re proposing, each carefully selected to blend comfort, cheer, and functionality within the hospital’s specific requirements:
-
A Cozy Reading Nook with a Durable Armchair
We are incredibly grateful to our friends at U-fab, who generously offered to donate a high-quality armchair from their showroom. This piece will anchor a dedicated story-time corner, creating a comforting retreat for children and parents alike. Imagine a quiet space for reading, perhaps even a special spot for Santa should he make a visit! The fabric chosen is an extra-heavy upholstery weight, making it exceptionally durable for a high-traffic public space. While it appears white in the photo, its true hue is a sophisticated wheat and blue, a combination that has proven its resilience in their showroom and will withstand the demands of a busy hospital environment.
-
A Soothing Paint Palette: Embracing Gargoyle
After careful consideration and numerous swatches, we’ve selected “Gargoyle” for the walls. This warm, deeper tone beautifully complements the existing wood paneling, which, for maintenance reasons, must remain unpainted. The room benefits from ample natural light, allowing us to embrace a slightly darker wall color without making the space feel confined. In fact, we anticipate this richer shade will significantly enhance the cozy factor, enveloping families in a sense of warmth and security during their stay.
-
Inclusivity in Festive Decor: Menorah and Christmas Tree
To honor and represent the diverse families who will utilize this waiting room, we’ve been specifically asked to include both a menorah and a Christmas tree. While the candle menorah in our inspiration image is beautiful, fire safety regulations dictate that we must opt for an electric or battery-operated alternative. We are actively searching for a suitable, equally charming option that meets these critical safety standards. It’s a wonderful initiative from the hospital to ensure all families feel seen and celebrated, especially as they plan for this decor to be an annual tradition. While Hanukkah might be earlier this year, ensuring they have everything needed for future years from this initiative is a thoughtful touch.
-
Whimsical Snowflakes: A Touch of Winter Magic
We envision a beautiful cascade of snowflakes, hung en masse from the ceiling in a strategically chosen spot where they won’t obstruct movement. While our inspiration image features gold snowflakes (like this), the final selection will likely be a more versatile color, perhaps silver or white, to evoke a serene winter wonderland. The goal is to create a delightful, ethereal visual that adds a touch of seasonal magic and wonder for children and adults alike.
-
Heartfelt Garlands: A Collaborative DIY Project
Garlands are an absolute must for adding festive charm. While our inspiration from Paper Source provides a wonderful aesthetic starting point, we’re planning to make this a truly special, interactive project. Our idea is to involve the children currently staying at the hospital, allowing them to color and personalize elements that we can then string together. This collaborative effort will not only result in unique, meaningful decorations but also provide a therapeutic and engaging activity for the kids, fostering a sense of ownership and joy in their temporary space.
-
The Magic of Twinkle Lights
Three words: twinkle lights. Everywhere. These tiny, enchanting lights have an unparalleled ability to instantly transform any space into a magical, comforting haven. We plan to strategically drape them to create a soft, warm glow, enhancing the cozy atmosphere and adding an undeniable sense of holiday cheer without being overwhelming. They offer a gentle, calming luminescence that is perfect for a healing environment.
-
Custom Valances for Added Warmth and Style
U-fab has once again demonstrated their incredible generosity by offering to donate fabric and their skilled time to create two custom valances for the room’s windows. While our usual preference for floor-length curtains isn’t permissible due to a slew of safety and fire code regulations, these custom valances will still go a long way in warming up the space and making it feel more residential. We’ve discovered some beautiful Roman-shade-inspired valance designs that we’re truly excited about, and the chosen fabric (a beautiful gray version, though our inspiration image shows another hue) will add a touch of sophisticated softness and texture to the room.
-
A Whimsical Faux Fireplace Feature
To evoke the ultimate cozy feeling, we plan to create a charming faux fireplace. There’s a recessed rectangle beneath the built-in around the TV, providing the perfect spot. Our idea is to temporarily insert a piece of wood with a delightful, cozy little fire painted on it – a playful visual for both kids and families. To complete this hearth-like effect, we’ll adorn the “mantel” with festive stockings, adding to the traditional holiday ambiance and creating a focal point of warmth and imagination.
-
An Interactive Chalkboard for Holiday Wishes
Building on the success of our previous leaning chalkboard project, we intend to create a large, hanging version for this waiting room. This interactive feature will provide a wonderful outlet for kids and families to write holiday wishes, draw festive doodles, or share messages of hope. The hospital staff enthusiastically supports this idea, recognizing the therapeutic value of creative expression. Chalk is the preferred medium because it’s much easier to clean from upholstery than markers, and it’s a cost-effective and hygienic option for regular replacement, ensuring ongoing cleanliness and accessibility.
-
A Vibrant, Safe, and Faux Christmas Tree
Last but certainly not least, a Christmas tree is an essential element of holiday decor. We’re eager to make it truly special. While our inspiration images feature real trees, fire code regulations necessitate a faux alternative. We are leaning towards a tree bursting with color, mimicking the vibrant, cheerful look of our inspiration. Our aim is to ensure the room feels calming and comfortable, but also injects a generous and much-needed dose of vibrant holiday cheer, making the season brighter for every family who passes through.

Bringing the Vision to Life: The Final Countdown and Anticipated Impact
It’s important to note that this mood board represents approximately 50% of our entire to-do list! Beyond these core concepts, we’re also planning thoughtful centerpieces, festive holiday tablecloths, additional DIY art projects, and a host of other delightful details that will contribute to the room’s overall transformation. Our ambitious goal is to have this entire room ready within the next two weeks. This accelerated timeline, compounded by the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, means we’re operating at a fast and furious pace, coordinating with volunteers, suppliers, and hospital staff to bring our vision to fruition.
We are incredibly excited to share the entire process with you, offering behind-the-scenes glimpses into the challenges, triumphs, and creative solutions involved in designing for such a unique and sensitive environment. More than anything, however, we are eagerly anticipating the moment the room is complete and we can witness the reactions of the deserving families who will be spending their holidays there. The hospital has even planned to create a heartwarming video documenting the makeover and capturing the genuine reactions of the children and their families. Suffice it to say, Sherry already has her tissues ready. This project is a powerful reminder of how thoughtful design, coupled with community collaboration, can truly make a profound difference, bringing comfort, joy, and a sense of normalcy to those who need it most during the holiday season.
