Following that, we had the joy of revealing our carefully curated collection of fabrics, each piece chosen to contribute to the nursery’s warm, inviting, and modern aesthetic. These initial steps were crucial in setting the tone, but they also brought us face-to-face with the room’s most significant design challenge.
The challenge? Zero windows. That’s right, not a single one. Emily’s modern new construction home presented a unique situation: an interior room designated as a nursery that, despite its lack of a direct window to the outside, met all fire-safety codes. This was ingeniously achieved by connecting it with a sleek sliding barn door (mounted on a cool industrial track) to her older son’s room, which boasts a generous 5′ x 5′ window. Additionally, the nursery is accessible from the hallway via a traditional hinged door. While practical for safety and layout, this design created a decorating conundrum of epic proportions. How do you make a windowless room feel bright, open, and cheerful, especially when it’s meant to be a cozy nursery? The immediate goal became clear: inject as much light as possible and create an illusion of spaciousness, akin to rooms blessed with picturesque views. Our solution turned out to be remarkably simple yet profoundly effective: two large, strategically placed mirrors, given a fresh coat of paint. Easy peasy indeed!
Our quest for the perfect mirrors led us to TJ Maxx, where we discovered these giant bronze-framed beauties for an unbelievable price of just $19 each. This was an absolute steal, especially considering we had previously scoured Craigslist and numerous thrift stores without finding anything remotely comparable in price or size. We purchased them with a clear vision: despite their existing bronze finish, we knew a crisp white paint job would transform them into exactly what the nursery needed. And while the painting would be a DIY project, the initial price point made it an undeniable win.
The transformation process was straightforward but required attention to detail. First, we laid out a protective plastic drop-cloth in the yard, creating a designated workspace. Next, we meticulously taped off the mirror surfaces to protect them from paint. Precision here is key to achieving a clean, professional finish. With the mirrors prepped, we applied three thin, even coats of glossy white Rustoleum spray paint. Applying multiple thin coats is always better than one thick coat, as it prevents drips and ensures a smooth, durable finish. A fantastic trick for dealing with any rogue spray paint that manages to seep under the tape and onto the mirror is to wait for it to fully dry. Once dry, a straight razor can be carefully used to shave off the dried paint for a pristine and polished look, leaving the mirror surface sparkling clean.
A little bonus tip, and one we cannot stress enough: attempting to spray paint indoors is almost always a bad idea. Think of it like trying to cut your own hair – rarely ends well! The fine spray dust can travel much further than you’d expect, coating every single surface within a considerable radius. More importantly, proper outdoor ventilation is absolutely crucial. Not only does it prevent your entire home from becoming a sticky, dusty mess, but it also protects you from inhaling harmful fumes. Staying outdoors will keep you clear-headed and prevent that woozy feeling that might tempt you to attempt a Posh Spice bob with kitchen scissors afterwards! It’s a double bonus: a clean house and intact hairdo.
And voila! The finished product: two crisp, fresh white-framed mirrors that instantly changed the entire dynamic of the nursery. When hung next to each other, directly across from the large window in the adjoined bedroom, they perform their magic. With the sliding barn door open, these mirrors beautifully capture and reflect the outside world – the vibrant sky and lush trees – creating an astonishing illusion. It genuinely feels as if we installed two new windows for a mere $19 apiece, plus a few dollars’ worth of spray paint. The transformation is dramatic and incredibly cost-effective.
