Transforming Our Guest Room: A Comprehensive Makeover Journey for a Welcoming Space
Embarking on a home renovation project, especially for a space as important as a guest room, is always an exciting endeavor. We recently dove headfirst into revamping our guest bedroom, aiming to create a warm, inviting, and functional oasis for our visitors. What started as a vision has steadily progressed, with each decision bringing us closer to our dream guest retreat. We’re thrilled to share the journey, detailing the steps we’ve taken, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the thoughtful choices that have shaped this transformation. While a few final touches are still on our horizon, the evolution from its initial spartan appearance to its current welcoming ambiance has been truly remarkable. For an even more detailed look at the latest stage of this ongoing project, where a few key items have already found their new homes, you can explore the most recent updates here.
Let’s take a look at the significant progress we’ve made so far, showcasing the current state of the room compared to its humble beginnings:

This comfortable and inviting arrangement is a stark contrast to the minimalist, almost empty canvas we started with just a few days prior. The transformation from Monday’s more sparse and less inspiring look is undeniably significant, highlighting the power of thoughtful design:

From Chaos to Comfort: Our Initial Accomplishments
While we acknowledge that some elements are still awaiting their “final resting place” and a few items remain on our to-do list, we’ve already checked off some crucial steps that laid the foundation for this inviting space. These foundational tasks were essential in converting a storage area into a functional and aesthetic guest bedroom:
- Decluttering and Organization: Our first and perhaps most impactful step was a massive purge of clutter. The room had unfortunately become a dumping ground for miscellaneous items. Thanks to a generous Habitat for Humanity ReStore pickup and strategically relocating other belongings into the playroom, the room was finally cleared, allowing us to visualize its true potential. This step alone dramatically altered the room’s atmosphere, making it feel lighter and more spacious.
- Investing in Essential Comfort: A comfortable stay begins with a good night’s sleep. We prioritized purchasing a new mattress and box spring, paired with a sturdy yet affordable bed frame. This forms the core of the guest experience, ensuring our visitors feel well-rested and pampered.
- Styling with Existing Bedding: To keep the budget in check and utilize items we already loved, we dressed the new bed with bedding we already owned. This not only saved costs but also allowed us to incorporate familiar textures and colors that we knew would work well within the evolving scheme.
- Guest Bathroom Essentials: Beyond the bedroom itself, we extended our attention to the adjoining guest bathroom. Installing a fresh shower curtain and stocking up on other bathroom essentials like plush towels and a new toilet seat cover were important steps to ensure our guests feel completely at home and have everything they need for a comfortable stay.
- A Fresh Coat of Paint: The transformative power of paint cannot be overstated. Applying a new color instantly revitalized the room, setting a serene and welcoming backdrop for all the other design elements. We carefully selected a shade that promotes relaxation and complements the natural light.
- Installing Window Treatments: Curtains play a dual role in design – offering privacy and light control while also adding softness and texture to a room. Hanging curtains was a key step in making the room feel more finished and cozy, transforming bare windows into decorative features.
The Road Ahead: Our Remaining Guest Room To-Do List
Even with significant progress, every design project has those last few elements that truly bring the vision to life. Our current outstanding tasks focus on adding functionality, balance, and personalized touches:
- Creating a Focal Point Above the Bed: To visually balance the large window positioned to the left of the bed, we plan to hang something substantial above the headboard. Our top contender is a large round mirror. Not only will it reflect light and make the room feel more expansive, but its circular form will also introduce much-needed softness and curves to a room currently dominated by rectangular shapes and straight lines. This piece will anchor the bed area and draw the eye.
- Enhancing Bedside Functionality: A nightstand and a table lamp are essential for guest comfort and practicality. We’re eager to add a stylish nightstand next to the bed, providing a surface for books, a glass of water, or personal items. Coupled with a warm table lamp, it will offer ambient lighting perfect for winding down, creating a more thoughtful and convenient experience for our guests.
- Optimizing Storage and Display: The empty bookcase situated between the bathroom and bedroom doors is a temporary solution. We envision switching it out for a proper dresser. This will not only offer ample storage for guests’ belongings but also provide a surface for decorative items or a curated display, enhancing the room’s aesthetic appeal and functionality.
- Perfecting Window Treatments: While the curtains are hung, they still require a crucial finishing touch: washing and hemming. This step will ensure they hang beautifully and precisely, contributing to a polished and professional look. It’s often the small details that elevate a space.
Strategic Layout Choices: Crafting the Ideal Guest Room Flow
The layout of any room is paramount, and our guest room was no exception. We meticulously experimented with numerous configurations – the bed positioned diagonally in a corner, against the other window wall, or perfectly centered on the back wall. After much deliberation and hands-on trial-and-error, we settled on the current arrangement, which we found to be the most harmonious and effective. This decision was largely influenced by key pieces we knew would be central to the room’s design.
Our custom-made DIY green headboard instantly became a vibrant focal point, injecting personality and a pop of color into the space. Complementing this, we repurposed our beloved old yellow Pottery Barn rug from the living room. Since we were due for a much larger rug (bigger than 5 x 8 feet) in the living room for Karl, this beautiful piece found its perfect second act in the guest room. The rich texture and warm hue of the rug tie the entire room together, grounding the space with inviting warmth.
The placement of the rug, specifically off-centered at the foot of the bed, wasn’t an intuitive choice at first. However, we were so enamored with how the rug’s colors harmonized with the newly painted walls and the chosen bedding that we were determined to make it work. The solution came in the form of two slipper chairs, formerly residents of our living room. By gently “squishing” them together to form a cozy, loveseat-like arrangement, they not only provided sensible context for the rug’s placement but also added crucial balance to that side of the room. We anticipate that once the planned nightstand is introduced to the left of the bed, the overall visual equilibrium will be further enhanced, creating a truly symmetrical and purposeful arrangement.
Speaking of balance, our anticipation for hanging a large, round mirror above the headboard, as highlighted in our to-do list, is immense. This strategic addition will effectively counterbalance the prominence of the window to the left of the bed. More importantly, its circular form will gracefully introduce curves, offering a welcome reprieve and artistic contrast to a room that, like many, is filled with an abundance of rectangles and squares, thus softening the overall aesthetic. This mirror isn’t just a decorative piece; it’s a design tool to create harmony and visual interest.

Curating Cozy Comfort: Bedding and Linens
To further enhance the bed’s appeal and comfort, we added a crisp white bedskirt, a budget-friendly find from Target at just $10. This simple addition provided a clean, finished look, beautifully complementing the existing collection of bedding we had accumulated from our previous guest room. Our current bedding ensemble is a testament to mixing and matching beloved pieces: the comforting brown and white blanket hails from Bed Bath & Beyond from years past, while the fluffy white comforter is an Ikea staple. The printed pillowcases add a touch of pattern and texture, sourced from Pottery Barn. For a playful accent, the cheerful yellow pinwheel pillow was a delightful discovery from Target, and the long blue decorative pillow came from TJ Maxx a while back. This diverse mix demonstrates how combining various elements can create a cohesive and inviting aesthetic.
While this bedding arrangement isn’t necessarily the 100% finalized look, we love how everything came together so far. We simply layered what we already had, and the result is quite fun and characterful. The beauty of design, however, lies in its flexibility; who knows what new combinations we might discover after tackling those last few items on our to-do list! As a quick note for those following our journey closely: there has already been an update since these photos were taken, and a few of the bedding items have been switched out to perfect the final look. Window Wonders: Curtains and Their Impact
The curtains, a vital element in both form and function, were another strategic acquisition from Ikea. At just $39 for a pair, they were an incredible value at $19 per panel. These aren’t just any curtains; their extra-long 95-inch length was a deliberate choice. We’re firm believers in hanging curtains high, often just below the ceiling, to visually extend the height of standard ceilings like ours. While 86-inch curtains might work for some, we find that the added length creates a more dramatic and expansive feel, making the room appear taller and more luxurious.

Of course, the practicality of home decor often involves a bit of DIY, and these curtains are no exception. They still require a good wash and a precise hem to ensure they fall perfectly. This small but significant step will truly complete their look, making them appear custom-tailored. Looking further ahead, we also envision adding crown molding above them, which will frame the windows beautifully and add another layer of architectural detail. However, that’s a project that will have to wait for a bit, as we focus on the immediate priorities.
The Power of Details: Hardware Upgrades
When it comes to interior design, even the smallest details can make a significant impact, transforming the overall feel of a space without breaking the bank. A perfect example of this in our guest room makeover was the simple act of switching out the hardware on the closet door. We moved away from the basic, ubiquitous brass pull that initially adorned the door, which, while functional, offered little in terms of character or aesthetic appeal.

In its place, we installed a delightful lime greeny-yellow knob, a charming find from Hobby Lobby for an astonishingly low price of $1.25. This vibrant pop of color instantly injected personality and a playful touch into the room. To ensure a cohesive look, this new knob features oil-rubbed bronze hardware, meticulously chosen to match the finish of our curtain rods. Speaking of which, those elegant curtain rods were also a budget-friendly score from Target, priced at just $9.99 a piece. These small, thoughtful upgrades demonstrate how strategic sourcing and attention to detail can elevate a room’s design, proving that stylish updates don’t always require a hefty investment.

The Grand Transformation: A Look Back
As I head off to tackle those final few items on our comprehensive to-do list – and undoubtedly rearrange things for the hundredth time, as is the nature of creative projects – I wanted to leave you with one last, striking image. This photograph captures what the room looked like just eight short days ago, offering a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come in such a brief period:

Isn’t it incredible to see such a dramatic metamorphosis? The journey from a sparse, overlooked space to a vibrant, welcoming guest room has been immensely rewarding. This transformation underscores the power of vision, planning, and a little elbow grease to turn any room into a beautiful and functional sanctuary. This room has truly come a long way, baby, and we’re excited for it to finally welcome our guests in style and comfort.
