Thanks to a generous Habitat for Humanity ReStore pickup and strategically relocating other belongings into the playroom, the room was finally cleared, allowing us to visualize its true potential. This step alone dramatically altered the room’s atmosphere, making it feel lighter and more spacious.
Investing in Essential Comfort: A comfortable stay begins with a good night’s sleep. We prioritized purchasing a new mattress and box spring, paired with a sturdy yet affordable bed frame. This forms the core of the guest experience, ensuring our visitors feel well-rested and pampered.

Creating a Focal Point Above the Bed: To visually balance the large window positioned to the left of the bed, we plan to hang something substantial above the headboard. Our top contender is a large round mirror. Not only will it reflect light and make the room feel more expansive, but its circular form will also introduce much-needed softness and curves to a room currently dominated by rectangular shapes and straight lines. This piece will anchor the bed area and draw the eye.
Enhancing Bedside Functionality: A nightstand and a table lamp are essential for guest comfort and practicality. We’re eager to add a stylish nightstand next to the bed, providing a surface for books, a glass of water, or personal items. Coupled with a warm table lamp, it will offer ambient lighting perfect for winding down, creating a more thoughtful and convenient experience for our guests.
Optimizing Storage and Display: The empty bookcase situated between the bathroom and bedroom doors is a temporary solution. We envision switching it out for a proper dresser. We meticulously experimented with numerous configurations – the bed positioned diagonally in a corner, against the other window wall, or perfectly centered on the back wall. Since we were due for a much larger rug (bigger than 5 x 8 feet) in the living room for Karl, this beautiful piece found its perfect second act in the guest room. The placement of the rug, specifically off-centered at the foot of the bed, wasn’t an intuitive choice at first. However, we were so enamored with how the rug’s colors harmonized with the newly painted walls and the chosen bedding that we were determined to make it work. The solution came in the form of two slipper chairs, formerly residents of our living room. By gently “squishing” them together to form a cozy, loveseat-like arrangement, they not only provided sensible context for the rug’s placement but also added crucial balance to that side of the room. We anticipate that once the planned nightstand is introduced to the left of the bed, the overall visual equilibrium will be further enhanced, creating a truly symmetrical and purposeful arrangement.
