Her Own Pink Sky Above

Embarking on a room transformation is always an exciting journey, and we’ve just celebrated a major milestone in Clara’s room makeover! With three significant items successfully checked off our list – painting the walls, refreshing the closet, and giving the ceiling a brand new hue – we’ve truly completed a painting marathon. The heart of this transformation lies above, where a soft, ethereal pink now graces the ceiling. We meticulously selected Pink Cadillac by Benjamin Moore, applied in a luscious eggshell finish, to create a subtle yet impactful feature. While some photos might capture its delicate nature, in person, it’s a soft-but-noticeable shade that adds a delightful layered detail without dominating the room’s overall aesthetic. To perfectly complement this playful ceiling, we opted for clean, crisp white walls. This strategic choice ensures the room feels bright and expansive, allowing the ceiling to shine without competing with the vibrant colors and patterns found in elements like the rug, pillows, and curtains. For the walls, we chose Benjamin Moore Simply White in an eggshell finish, mirroring the shade we consistently use for our trim and doors, albeit in a glossier, more durable finish. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect white, exploring other popular white paint colors can be incredibly helpful for both walls and trim.

Our commitment to infusing every corner with charm extended to the closet, where we cleverly utilized some leftover Pink Cadillac ceiling paint. This small detail adds a cohesive touch and a hint of unexpected whimsy to an often-overlooked space. Looking ahead, the closet holds even greater potential for transformation. I envision installing a custom built-in bench, offering both seating and valuable storage in Clara’s evolving room. Furthermore, the unique slanted ceiling within the closet sparks creative ideas; imagine charming little cedar roofing shakes, evoking an enchanting “indoor playhouse” vibe. Paired with a playful wallpaper on the back wall, this space could become a magical nook within her room, transforming a simple closet into an imaginative escape. These future plans highlight our desire to create a space that not only looks beautiful but also fosters creativity and evolves with Clara as she grows.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of redesigning a home is witnessing how pieces migrate and find new life in different spaces. You might have noticed a familiar sight: the vibrant blue rug and the inviting curtains from our living room have happily made their way into Clara’s room. This shift was partly practical and partly spontaneous. Clara’s previous pink rug, while charming, was shedding profusely, creating noticeable pink tumbleweeds across the new hardwood floors. This made the decision to relocate it an easy one. Fortuitously, Clara adores this particular blue rug; she often transforms its light blue sections into oceans for her toy animals and dolls, sparking imaginative play. Rolling it out in her room was a trial, but its immediate success in both aesthetics and function was undeniable. This “migration” philosophy is something we embrace; when we first moved in and unpacked, we anticipated that many items would eventually find their perfect spot throughout the house. It’s truly satisfying to see how elements circulate and settle. As a result of this delightful shuffle, our beautiful woven rug now resides in the living room, though we’re still pondering if it’s its long-term home. This fluid approach to decor allows for flexibility and ensures every room feels refreshed and purposeful.

But before we unveil the finished touches, let’s rewind to the crucial, often overlooked, stage of room preparation. Painting a room effectively hinges on thorough preparation. We meticulously cleared Clara’s room, moving all furniture to the center and covering it with sturdy plastic drop cloths to protect everything from paint splatters. You might recall those faint, stripey walls from our previous project where we sprayed the doors before installing the hardwood floors. Those stripes weren’t just a memory; they posed a potential problem. This phenomenon, known as “flashing,” occurs when unprimed or unevenly primed surfaces cause the topcoat paint to absorb differently, leading to visible imperfections and an uneven finish. To guarantee a flawless, uniform finish for our new wall color, we dedicated time to carefully prime only those specific areas where flashing was a concern. This targeted priming ensures that the fresh coat of paint will adhere evenly and beautifully, providing a professional and lasting result.

Here you can clearly see those targeted areas, now impeccably primed, alongside the beautifully painted ceiling. Our painting strategy involved tackling the ceiling first, ensuring crisp lines and an even application before moving on to the walls. Only after the ceiling was complete did we proceed with carefully priming the selected sections of the walls. This approach allowed us to address any potential issues like bleed-through or flashing from previous paint jobs, creating a clean and uniform canvas for our main wall color. The contrast between the primed sections and the newly painted ceiling provides a clear visual of the progress, underscoring the importance of meticulous preparation in achieving a truly professional and enduring paint finish for the entire room.

With the ceiling done and the problematic wall areas perfectly primed, it was time for the main event: applying the fresh coat of white paint to the walls. I captured this particular shot specifically to illustrate the remarkable transformation. It vividly shows the stark difference between the old, yellowed wall paint that had dulled over time, the cooler-toned primer that provided a neutral base, and the radiant Simply White wall color. The immediate impact of this crisp white is astonishing; it instantly brightens and opens up the entire room, making it feel fresh, clean, and incredibly inviting. This side-by-side comparison truly highlights the power of paint in revitalizing a space and the importance of selecting the right shade to achieve your desired ambiance.

Of course, a room is never truly “finished” in the creative sense, and Clara’s sanctuary is no exception. We still have several exciting elements to add that will complete her personalized space. Above her bed, a beautiful canopy is halfway through construction – a sewing project I’m eagerly anticipating finishing and hanging. This will undoubtedly add a touch of dreamy elegance and a cozy nook for her. Beyond the canopy, a carefully curated selection of art pieces will soon adorn the walls, injecting personality and color. And, of course, no room is complete without the perfect lighting; a new light fixture is on our radar to enhance both aesthetics and functionality. Yet, even without these final touches, the transformation is monumental. Bidding farewell to the old, yellowed walls and finally eradicating those lingering stripes from our door-spraying days feels like a huge victory. It’s a vast improvement, especially when we consider the room’s initial state, which was characterized by an outdated blue trim that truly dated the space. This journey from blue trim to bright, airy white has been nothing short of remarkable, creating a foundation for a truly magical childhood room.

On a slightly different note, we’ve also been diligently working on honing our photography skills. Picture us both chuckling and blushing as we admit we still have a considerable journey ahead! However, these ‘after’ photos represent a significant personal achievement: for the very first time, we shot all of them entirely in manual mode. While they may not be absolutely perfect, and we humbly acknowledge the infinitely superior photography skills evident on many of our favorite blogs, we genuinely feel we’re slowly, but surely, getting the hang of it. Each photo shoot is a learning experience, helping us better capture the essence and beauty of our home transformations. This journey of continuous learning, both in DIY and in documenting it, is a rewarding part of our creative process, and we’re excited to see how our skills continue to evolve.

The true measure of a successful child’s room makeover, of course, comes from its primary resident. And by that metric, Clara’s new room is a resounding triumph! Her reaction to the pink ceiling was absolutely priceless and instantly validated all our efforts. When she first walked in and gazed upwards, her eyes lit up as she declared, “Now when I’m sleeping I can look at the pink and the pink can look at me.” This simple, heartfelt statement encapsulates the magic and comfort we hoped to create. It’s a space where her imagination can soar, and even the ceiling becomes a friendly companion in her dreams. Her pure joy and connection to the space are the ultimate rewards, proving that thoughtful design tailored to a child’s world can indeed create something truly special and memorable.

One of our core design philosophies for Clara’s room was to strike a delicate balance between vibrant playfulness and serene calm. We believe a child’s space should inspire creativity and energy, while also providing a tranquil haven for rest and quiet moments. This equilibrium is beautifully achieved through a thoughtful combination of elements. The fun mix of patterns found in her colorful pillows, the whimsical curtains, and the engaging rug infuse the room with an energetic “crazy” factor, adding visual interest and a playful spirit. These bolder elements are then artfully tempered by the clean lines and understated elegance of the white furniture and, of course, the freshly painted white walls. The white acts as a sophisticated backdrop, allowing the patterns and colors to pop without overwhelming the senses. This deliberate contrast ensures the room isn’t “too wacky” but rather a harmonious blend of stimulation and serenity, creating a truly inviting and balanced environment for Clara.

Gazing from the perspective of the closet, one gets a wonderful overview of the other side of Clara’s room. This angle highlights a particular area that still beckons for creative attention: the wall above the crib. While currently a blank canvas, it’s a space ripe with potential for art or decorative elements. However, we’re approaching this particular decision with patience and foresight. Clara seems to be nearing the exciting transition out of her crib, which means its days in the room are likely numbered. Rather than rushing to decorate around it, our plan is to wait until the crib is officially moved out. This strategic delay will allow us to assess the newly open space and thoughtfully decide what larger furniture piece or configuration will reside on that wall. The choice of what will “live” on that wall will, in turn, heavily inform the selection and placement of the art above it, ensuring a cohesive and functional design that adapts to Clara’s growing needs and evolving room layout.

Ooh, look at that! I managed to focus sharply on the book while artfully blurring the alligator in the foreground. A small victory in my ongoing quest to master photography! Moments like these almost make me want to craft myself a makeshift construction crown proclaiming “Photoshoot Skillz In Da House.” Then, I’d probably promptly crumble it up after browsing my endlessly inspiring favorite blogs, which invariably showcase photos of infinitely superior quality. But every little step counts, right? It’s a journey, and celebrating the small wins keeps the creative energy flowing. Learning to manipulate depth of field to draw attention to specific details is a skill I’m eager to refine, and seeing subtle improvements in each shoot is incredibly motivating, even if I still have a long way to go to match the pros.

Despite any lingering self-doubt about my photography prowess, there’s one undeniable truth: this cute kid makes every single picture better. Clara brings an infectious joy and natural charm that elevates any shot, transforming even a simple image into something heartwarming and memorable. Her presence adds an authentic spark, a candid innocence that no amount of technical skill can replicate. So, big ups to my amazing girl for making this particular shot, and indeed countless others, truly shine. Her genuine spirit is the secret ingredient that turns our room transformations into living, breathing stories, and her delightful expressions are the ultimate highlight of any photoshoot we attempt in her beautiful, newly refreshed space.

And for those with a keen eye for detail, a closer inspection will reveal a small, intentional imperfection: we didn’t meticulously cut into every tiny crack where the wall meets the ceiling. This wasn’t an oversight, but a deliberate decision driven by our exciting next step. We’re planning to install elegant crown molding, hopefully in the very near future! Crown molding isn’t just a decorative flourish; it serves multiple practical and aesthetic purposes. It creates a seamless transition between the walls and ceiling, adds architectural character, and masterfully conceals any minor imperfections or uneven lines where the two surfaces meet. Knowing that the molding would eventually cover these edges meant we could save precious time and effort during the painting phase, focusing our energy on achieving perfect coverage elsewhere. This upcoming addition will provide a sophisticated, polished finish to Clara’s room, truly tying the entire design together with a touch of classic charm.
