Exploring Innovation and Inspiration at the Portland Home & Garden Show

Yesterday was an extraordinary journey, a vibrant whirlwind of discovery at the Portland Home & Garden Show. From the moment we stepped into the expansive Expo Center, we were enveloped by an atmosphere brimming with innovative design, breathtaking gardens, and the undeniable warmth of the local community. The only pause in our full-day exploration was a quick, yet essential, detour to savor the much-talked-about Voodoo Donuts – yes, including the surprisingly delicious maple bacon creation! This post will dive deep into our unforgettable experience at the show, offering insights and inspiration, while a broader Portland trip summary will follow once our city exploration is complete.

An Early Start: Media Engagements and East Coast Adjustments

Our day kicked off long before the official opening, with early morning interviews for local TV stations at 7:30 am. Having been awake since 4 am due to our lingering East Coast internal clocks, merely stringing together coherent sentences felt like a small victory. The energy of the impending show, however, quickly became a potent antidote to any lingering fatigue, setting the stage for a day packed with exploration and engagement.

Stepping Inside the Future: The Eco-Friendly Smart Home

The centerpiece of our visit, and indeed a major highlight of the entire show, was the meticulously crafted Smart Home. This extraordinary mini-house, constructed by the dedicated crew in a mere 48 hours right within the convention center, served as a brilliant showcase for cutting-edge sustainable and green design principles. It wasn’t just a structure; it was a living demonstration of how modern living can seamlessly integrate with environmental consciousness. From its solar-paneled roof efficiently harnessing renewable energy to its robust, energy-efficient windows and walls, every element spoke to a commitment to reduced environmental impact and enhanced living quality. Beyond its impressive green credentials, the Smart Home was also a treasure trove of aesthetically pleasing and functional design elements that we were eager to emulate in our own space.

Universal Design and Local Craftsmanship in the Kitchen

Within this innovative dwelling, the kitchen immediately captivated us with its thoughtful, universally designed layout. This space, masterfully crafted by talented local cabinet makers, demonstrated how accessibility and elegant design can coexist beautifully. The true star, however, was a stellar dining table, also painstakingly handmade by local artisans. Its presence underscored the show’s emphasis on supporting regional talent and valuing craftsmanship, turning a simple meal area into a focal point of artistry and community pride.

Artistic Details: From Quatrefoil Tables to Cork Pillows

The living space continued to impress with its unique furnishings, particularly another striking table. This piece, a fascinating quatrefoil design meticulously fashioned from cross-sections of wood, was a testament to creative material use and geometric elegance. It was so captivating that we half-jokingly considered attempting to sneak it onto our carry-on luggage – a testament to its irresistible charm. Our appreciation for unique textures continued with a set of pillows adorned with polished, cork-like wood disks and vibrant, colorful thread. These weren’t merely decorative; they were surprisingly comfortable, blending natural elements with tactile comfort in an unexpected way.

The Beauty of Reclaimed Wood: An Inspirational Wall

Another profound source of inspiration was a display wall crafted entirely from locally reclaimed wood. This artistic and eco-conscious installation instantly sparked ideas for our own home. It served as a powerful reminder that discarded materials often hold immense potential for beautiful and functional reinterpretation, motivating us to consider future projects using salvaged wood from our own basement.

Immersive Landscapes: Bringing the Outdoors Indoors

Beyond the Smart Home, the sheer scale and beauty of the landscaping and greenery displays were truly astonishing. It was as if entire sections of vibrant Pacific Northwest gardens had been meticulously transplanted indoors. Our fascination stemmed partly from our own burgeoning spring landscaping ambitions and partly from the undeniable allure of these exquisitely designed natural spaces. The convention center transformed into an illusion of the outdoors, complete with strategic mood lighting, artfully arranged brick walls, and elegant wood pergolas, all masterfully constructed by talented local vendors and artisans. We particularly admired the charming big bulb string lights that added a festive, welcoming glow, and the intentionally mismatched chairs around a dining setup, which lent a relaxed, eclectic charm.

The Future of Housing: Ideabox Prefab Homes

Amidst these verdant displays, we discovered another architectural marvel: a remarkably cool prefab home from Ideabox. Our photographs, regrettably, couldn’t fully capture its ingenious design and immediate appeal. Both Sherry and I were so thoroughly charmed by its layout and aesthetic that we found ourselves half-planning to simply move in right there, amidst the bustling Expo Center! The home’s entire interior was thoughtfully furnished by Ikea, creating a familiar and comforting ambiance. In fact, a particular light fixture – spotted earlier and a favorite of ours – made the bedroom feel instantly like a cherished part of home.

The kitchen, a beacon of modern functionality, featured a few strategically placed bright green cabinets. These provided just the right pop of color and playful energy without overwhelming the space, striking a perfect balance that delighted everyone who explored the home with us.

Family Fun: Clara’s Grand Tour

While Clara spent most of the day exploring the vibrant city of Portland with my parents, who had traveled to PDX with us, she joined us at the show for a memorable afternoon. Even at her young age, she was utterly captivated by the array of sights and sounds. Her playful spirit led to several adorable photo opportunities, including her enthusiastically “playing landscaper” amidst the elaborate garden displays, striking a pose as the “DIY Daddy of the Day,” and even taking a whimsical “faux shower.” These moments added a heartwarming, personal touch to our exploration, reminding us of the universal appeal of creativity and home design.

Interestingly, Clara’s “faux shower” wasn’t the day’s only shower-related photo opportunity. In a delightful turn of events, we captured two more instances of Petersiks enthusiastically posing in various display showers – proving that a good shower display, even a mock one, holds universal appeal!

Sherry’s quick update: For those who might have speculated about my trench coat concealing a secret, rest assured, I’m not pregnant! Portland’s weather was simply cool and damp, and perhaps my coat wasn’t as flattering as I’d hoped. Haha!

“Taking Your Blog to the Next Level”: A Humorous Seminar

The afternoon brought a unique opportunity: a blogging seminar where we were invited by the event organizers to share our insights with local bloggers on “taking your blog to the next level.” Our presentation was, shall we say, unconventional, punctuated by a blend of genuine advice and self-deprecating humor. We weren’t afraid to be ourselves, even if that meant showcasing amusing throwback photos, like Sherry’s airbrushed jeans from her teenage years or a comically unexpected image of me on a toilet. Our philosophy was clear: authenticity trumps perfection.

During the discussion, Sherry’s ability to pull hilariously random examples out of thin air kept everyone entertained. While stressing the importance of blogging about genuine passions rather than fleeting trends, she quipped, “You know, don’t start a blog about being green just because you think it’s a trend if it’s not really something you love and are passionate about – or you know, just because something like being… lactose intolerant might be popular, don’t just start a blog about that.” This spontaneous mention of lactose intolerance as a “hot topic” led to a burst of laughter. Other unconventional suggestions that somehow made their way into our advice included “insert Ninja Turtle references” and Sherry’s casual reference to “a pile of crap” – though she clarified she meant the hoarded items in our playroom, not literal dung! Despite the playful antics, we believe we delivered genuinely helpful and actionable advice, fostering a relaxed and engaging atmosphere for the attendees.

The seminar concluded with a wonderful opportunity to meet and chat with everyone. Once again, the friendly and welcoming nature of Portlanders shone through, making the networking session a truly enjoyable experience.

Connecting with Fellow Creators and Portland’s Green Heart

After the seminar, we had the pleasure of connecting more intimately with our fellow bloggers. We were even gifted a charming “Welcome to Portland” print by these lovely ladies, which, in true Portland fashion, even featured a bird – a nod to the city’s quirky charm, popularized by a certain sketch.

Beyond its reputation for friendliness, Portland truly embodies a “mighty green” ethos. This commitment to sustainability is infectious, making one aspire to be a “greener man,” to borrow a phrase from Jack Nicholson. We met inspiring individuals like Jim from Northwest Cedar Specialties, a true advocate for responsible resource use. Jim passionately rescues scrap wood through dumpster diving at construction sites, home remodels, and other locations – always with the blessing of the construction teams, as much valuable material is often discarded. From this reclaimed wood, he meticulously crafts beautiful cedar planters, embodying a philosophy where every piece comes with “a lot of respect and loving care.” His dedication serves as a powerful reminder of how creativity and eco-consciousness can intertwine.

My fascination with green design extended to the incredible living walls from Seventh Wonder Gardens. These vertical gardens were mesmerizing, instantly making me wish for a huge, sun-filled atrium in our home where I could replicate such lush, vibrant installations. Their website even features a captivating time-lapse video of one of these walls flourishing, a testament to their dynamic beauty.

While I was captivated by the plant walls, Sherry was utterly charmed by a display chicken coop. This momentarily sparked dreams of urban farming, until the pragmatic reality set in: our county, unlike progressive Portland, doesn’t permit backyard chickens unless one possesses significantly more land than we do. A minor disappointment, but a reminder of the differing regulations that shape our aspirations for sustainable living. Perhaps someday, these green dreams will align with local ordinances.

Evening Engagement: Meet & Greet and Community Connection

After a productive day, we took a brief respite for dinner and to upload some of the day’s many photographs before heading to an evening meet and greet. I promised Sherry I’d include this photo of me looking exceptionally… well, nerdy. Who, after all, navigates a bustling convention center equipped with a giant backpack, an open laptop, and an equally giant camera slung around their neck? This dedicated blogger, apparently! It’s a testament to the immersive experience and the desire to capture every inspiring detail.

This image marked nearly the last of our personal snapshots for the day. Most of the pictures from the lively meet and greet were captured either by the show’s official photographer (to be posted on their Facebook page) or by the wonderful individuals we had the pleasure of interacting with. Social media, particularly Twitter, quickly became a hub for these shared moments. A particular highlight was a photo from Katy at The Non-Consumer Advocate, who, in true “Keep Portland Weird” fashion (a popular local bumper sticker slogan), encouraged us to pose next to a bed display rather than in the designated courtyard. Given that “weird” is practically our middle name, we enthusiastically obliged, resulting in a memorable and truly Portlandesque photo.

In all seriousness, the meet and greet was arguably the most rewarding part of our day. It was an incredible privilege to connect face-to-face with so many of our readers, finally putting faces to the commenter names we’ve seen countless times. Your enthusiasm and willingness to come see us were incredibly flattering and deeply appreciated. This experience has only fueled our excitement for our upcoming book tour in the fall, where we look forward to meeting many more of you in other cities, and perhaps even returning to Portland. While our publishers ultimately determine our tour stops, we promise to keep you updated. Portland, with its inspiring innovations, vibrant community, and surprisingly less rainy weather than anticipated, has truly left an indelible mark on us.
