Two Weeks In: A Candid Look at Our New Home’s Progress & Project Plans
It’s hard to believe, but two whole weeks have already flown by since we officially moved into our new home. This milestone feels like the perfect moment to pull back the curtain and share an unfiltered glimpse into our progress—or perhaps, the delightfully chaotic lack thereof—in each room. Moving is always a whirlwind, a fascinating blend of accomplishment and persistent disarray, and our journey has been no exception. We’ve been riding a rollercoaster of emotions, from the sheer joy of unpacking cherished items to the overwhelming reality of endless to-do lists, all while navigating the initial phases of transforming a house into a truly personalized home.
On one hand, we genuinely feel a sense of pride in what we’ve managed to achieve in such a short span. We hit the ground running, already tackling significant projects that have made a tangible difference in our daily comfort and the overall feel of the house. These initial victories include the satisfying task of giving Clara’s room a fresh coat of paint, which instantly made her space feel more personal and welcoming. We also navigated the exciting challenge of buying and assembling a new bed, transforming a key bedroom into a more functional sanctuary. Major structural improvements, such as removing a bunch of awkward bi-fold doors, have already begun to open up our living areas, enhancing flow and natural light throughout the main floor. Even a small but impactful change like raising our shower curtain has made a surprising difference in both functionality and aesthetics in one of our bathrooms. And of course, the monumental task of unpacking almost everything—a feat that feels even more impressive considering we were also navigating festive family commitments over Christmas—is a huge win that has allowed us to breathe a little easier.
Yet, despite these significant strides, a persistent feeling of being “unsettled” still permeates our days. While most of the absolutely essential items have found a temporary spot in our new abode (we know these placements are rarely permanent for the long haul!), the house remains riddled with countless piles of things eagerly awaiting their designated homes. Think picture frames leaning against walls, tools scattered in corners, stacks of rugs waiting to be unrolled, and decor items patiently biding their time until we finalize design decisions. This ongoing state of transition can be both exhilarating and exhausting, a constant reminder that while we’ve made excellent progress, our true nesting journey has only just begun. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and we’re embracing every step of the home organization and renovation process. Join us now for a candid, room-by-room tour, starting with the spaces that are, by our current standards, looking the most presentable and functional.
Glimpse into Our Most Presentable Spaces
The Living Room: Soon-to-be Dining Haven
Our living room, which is slated to become our formal dining room in the future, has finally been liberated from the mountain of moving boxes that once defined it. The sheer relief of seeing the floor again is immense, marking a significant step towards creating a functional space! We’ve even managed to organize some initial storage within the base cabinets of the charming built-ins that flank one wall. Full disclosure, the objects currently on display are largely “shoved there” for the sake of appearances, so please, no judging the arrangement just yet! This room is slowly but surely transforming from a functional storage zone into a space with potential, ready for its next chapter as an elegant dining area where we can host family and friends. The cleared floor space alone makes it feel significantly more welcoming and open, hinting at the sophisticated dining experience we plan to cultivate here.

Our Functional Kitchen
The heart of any home, our kitchen, is remarkably functional, even amidst the ongoing unpacking and organization. We’re so grateful to have a space where we can prepare meals without feeling completely overwhelmed by boxes and clutter. While there are still drawers to organize with custom inserts and pantry items to arrange perfectly for optimal accessibility, the core elements are in place, allowing us to maintain some semblance of normalcy and enjoy cooking. It’s a bright and airy space that we’re already loving for its natural light and spacious layout, and we’re excited to infuse it with our personal style as we delve deeper into decorative touches and more permanent, aesthetically pleasing storage solutions in the coming months. This kitchen truly is the functional backbone of our new home.

The Inviting Family Room
Our family room is quickly becoming a favorite spot, offering a comfortable haven where we can unwind after a long day of unpacking and tackling various home projects. This room has seen significant progress in terms of becoming a truly livable space, with essential seating arranged and frequently used items within easy reach. It’s where we gather to relax, watch movies, and simply be together, and its relatively organized state brings a much-needed sense of calm and normalcy to our busy lives. The potential for cozy evenings and lively family gatherings is already palpable here, and we can’t wait to fully furnish and decorate it to reflect our family’s unique personality and lifestyle, making it the ultimate comfort zone.

Bright & Airy: The Sunroom
Next up is the sunroom, a truly delightful space bathed in an abundance of natural light. We envision this room as a tranquil retreat, perfect for enjoying morning coffees, an afternoon read, or simply soaking in the warmth. It’s currently cleared of boxes and already feels quite serene and open, offering a beautiful visual connection to the outdoors. While it’s still awaiting its ultimate purpose and carefully selected furnishings, its inherent brightness and openness make it one of the most immediately welcoming areas of the house. We’re actively brainstorming ideas for comfortable, perhaps wicker or rattan, seating and lush, vibrant plants to truly bring this sun-drenched space to life, transforming it into an indoor oasis.

Clara’s Cozy Corner
Clara’s room is another early success story, significantly benefiting from that critical early painting project. The curtains are now up, adding a much-needed touch of softness, privacy, and completion, instantly making her space feel truly her own and ready for comfortable sleep. We’re still on the hunt for the perfect art pieces to adorn her freshly painted walls and a charming new light fixture that will tie everything together, adding personality and flair. However, the foundational elements for a sweet, personalized, and functional bedroom are definitely there. Seeing her settle into a freshly painted room with her favorite things brings us immense joy and makes the entire moving process feel incredibly worthwhile, reminding us of the ultimate goal: creating happy spaces for our family.

Pristine Bathrooms: Hall, Guest, & Master
We’re incredibly thankful for functional and relatively clean bathrooms! The hall bathroom, guest room bath, and master bathroom are all looking quite presentable and are fully operational, a major win in any moving scenario where basic amenities are paramount. The simple act of having these essential spaces ready for use makes a huge difference in our daily routines and overall comfort, eliminating one major source of stress. While future plans might involve some cosmetic updates, new vanity installations, or personalized decorative touches to elevate their style, for now, their clean and working state is a luxury we don’t take for granted. Remember our small victory of raising the shower curtain? Those seemingly minor details truly add up to a more polished look and improved functionality in these critical spaces!

The Connecting Main Hallway
The main hallway, often overlooked in the grand scheme of home renovations, is thankfully clear and providing easy passage throughout the house. While it currently serves primarily as a functional thoroughfare, its potential for displaying captivating art or creating a welcoming gallery wall is certainly on our radar for future decorative projects. For now, its uncluttered state significantly contributes to the overall sense of openness and allows for effortless movement between rooms, which is absolutely crucial during these initial weeks of settling in. It’s a clean, blank canvas just waiting for personality, art, and perhaps some statement lighting to truly bring it to life and connect the different zones of our home aesthetically.

Spaces Still Finding Their Identity: The Work-in-Progress Zones
Now, let’s transition to the rooms that are, shall we say, semi-functional. These spaces currently serve their basic purpose but still feel pretty darn disheveled and are far from their organized, finished state. They’re a testament to the fact that home organization is a marathon, not a sprint, especially after a big move where every item needs a new address. These are the areas where the “unsettled” feeling is most palpable, and where our big project list truly begins to take shape, requiring significant effort in planning and execution. They represent the next frontier in our home transformation journey.
Master Bedroom: A Sanctuary Awaiting Organization
Our master bedroom, while providing a comfortable place to sleep, is very much a work in progress, embodying the term “functional chaos.” We have yet to fully organize the closet, which is currently a maze of boxes, partially unpacked clothes, and misplaced items, making it far from the tranquil space we envision. A significant task ahead involves finding a cohesive nightstand solution that works with our aesthetic and provides practical storage for bedside essentials. Furthermore, we’re still in the market for another dresser to properly house our belongings and bring a much-needed sense of order and serenity to the space. The vision for our master bedroom is a calm, organized sanctuary for rest and rejuvenation, but we’re certainly not there yet. It reminds us daily that every home transformation has its stages, and patience is key as we work towards our ideal retreat.

The Evolving Home Office
The office is another room where functionality is battling fiercely with disarray. See that rather imposing pile of tools in the corner? Yeah, those definitely need a proper home and dedicated storage solution! While we’ve managed to set up our basic workspace, allowing for essential tasks to be completed, the persistent presence of these stray items means the room can’t truly function as a productive, inspiring, and clutter-free environment. Our ultimate goal is to create an organized, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing home office where creativity can flow freely and work can be accomplished without the distraction of misplaced hammers and drills. Dedicated shelving, drawers, and possibly a custom workbench are high on the priority list for this crucial space.

Laundry & Mudroom: A Hub Awaiting Structure
Ah, the laundry/mudroom! This hardworking space is in desperate need of some significant TLC and a complete overhaul. It cries out for more built-in storage, intelligent shelving, and a few clever organizational solutions to tame the inevitable clutter that accumulates in such a high-traffic entry point. Currently, it’s a functional but undeniably chaotic zone, serving as a catch-all for coats, shoes, backpacks, and an endless rotation of laundry baskets. Our vision includes custom cabinetry, smarter hooks for outerwear, durable flooring, and a systematic approach that can handle the rigorous demands of family life while remaining visually appealing and easy to maintain. It’s a project that promises to bring immense relief and efficiency once tackled, transforming a messy thoroughfare into an organized, welcoming entry.

Our Projects for the Next Phase: Beyond the Threshold
Finally, we have the infamous “close-the-door-when-people-come-over” rooms. These are the spaces that are basically not at all useful yet, and as a result, have become prime dumping grounds for items in limbo. Every new homeowner knows these rooms; they are the unavoidable casualties of a busy move, holding all the items that don’t have an immediate home but are too important to throw away. They represent the next big wave of projects that will truly make this house feel like our forever home, demanding significant transformation from storage areas into fully functional and inviting spaces.
The Guest Room: From Storage to Sanctuary
Remember the guest room that we humorously revealed this morning as a “boxed-in” disaster? Well, it’s still very much in that chaotic state! Seriously, who would want to stay over in there right now with all the clutter? It’s currently serving as an overflow storage unit, holding everything from extra linens to miscellaneous decor items that haven’t found their permanent spot. Our ambitious goal for this room is to transform it into a welcoming and comfortable sanctuary for visitors, making them feel truly at home and cherished. This will involve significant decluttering, thoughtful furnishing with a comfortable bed and seating, and adding those personal, thoughtful touches that make a guest feel special. It’s a stark contrast to its current state, but we’re excited about the challenge and the prospect of hosting friends and family in a beautiful, dedicated space.

Playroom & Future Kids’ Bedroom: Awaiting Little Hands
And then there’s the playroom, which is strategically slated to become a future kids’ bedroom. Yikes – as it stands, it’s certainly not kid-friendly yet! This space is currently a chaotic jumble of unpacked boxes, forgotten toys from the move, and random household items that need sorting. It’s far from the vibrant, organized, and imaginative space we envision for our children, where they can play, learn, and eventually sleep. Transforming it into a safe, engaging, and inspiring environment will be a major project, requiring careful planning for smart storage solutions, defined play zones, and eventually, comfortable sleeping areas. The potential is immense, but the immediate work ahead is clear: it needs a complete overhaul to become the joyful, functional hub it’s meant to be for our growing family.

Charting Our Course: The Grand To-Do List Awaits
So, that’s the honest, unvarnished look at how things are shaping up exactly two weeks after getting the keys to our new home. Clearly, there’s an immense amount left to tackle, and this tour has only scratched the surface of our broader ambitions for this property. The journey of transforming a house into a home is an ongoing adventure, filled with endless tasks, both big and small, each contributing to the overall vision we hold. We’re actually in the midst of compiling a giant, comprehensive to-do list, meticulously detailing every single project, not just to share our exciting plans with you, but also to help my wonderfully Type-A wife feel more organized and in control of the multitude of projects ahead. This list will be our definitive roadmap, guiding us through each room, detailing every purchase, paint swatch decision, and DIY endeavor. Expect to see some serious progress updates soon as we start checking things off! Our next big adventure? A much-anticipated (and probably extensive) trip to Home Depot for some much-needed supplies to officially kick off the next exciting phase of our home transformation. We’re eager to dive deeper into these projects and share every step, challenge, and triumph with you all as our dream home comes to life.
