Welcome to a tale as old as time—or at least, as old as our journey in creating a home. It’s a story of trials, errors, and ultimately, triumph in the pursuit of the perfect dining chairs. What could be more frustrating than investing in eight chairs, thinking they’re ‘the ones,’ only to discover after a year and a half that they simply don’t fit your life or aesthetic? We found out the hard way: it’s doing all of that while documenting every step for the entire internet to see! But here at our little corner of the web, we believe in keeping it real, sharing not just the wins but also the lessons learned through plenty of bumps along the road. Building a home is a marathon, not a sprint, and sometimes, you have to try, try, and then try again (and again, and again!) before you hit your stride. The good news? This particular chapter in our home-making saga has a truly happy ending. So, let’s dive into the fascinating, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately rewarding journey of finding our ideal dining chairs.

The Chair Odyssey: A Series of Unfortunate “Chair-speriments”
Before we celebrate our current success, let’s flash back to where it all began: the epic struggle to make our original eight Craigslist chairs work. This wasn’t just a simple furniture purchase; it was a full-blown design dilemma that consumed us for what felt like an eternity. Our initial excitement about a bargain quickly turned into a relentless cycle of modifications, each more desperate than the last. It was a true “chair odyssey” filled with hope, disappointment, and a lot of creative (and sometimes misguided) energy.
-
The Initial “Bargain” Buy
It started innocently enough. We discovered eight chairs on Craigslist for a mere $25 each. A steal, we thought! We eagerly snatched them up, envisioning the potential. However, there was a catch: the chairs came adorned with a rather vibrant, almost ostentatious, hotel-style fabric. While the classic shape of the chairs held promise, that fabric was definitely not part of our long-term vision. It was the first hurdle, but one we confidently believed we could overcome.
-
The Slipcover Saga
Our first attempt at taming the chairs involved slipcovers. We scoured stores until we found some inexpensive options at World Market. Score! Or so we thought. Upon arrival, they proved to be far too baggy, swimming on our chairs like oversized pajamas. Undeterred, and with a stroke of experimental genius, we tossed them into the dryer. Lo and behold, they shrunk just enough to provide a much better, albeit still imperfect, fit. Another temporary victory achieved!
-
Dyeing for a Better Look
With the fit somewhat addressed, the next challenge was color. The original off-white tone of the slipcovers clashed jarringly with the pristine white trim and the dark teal built-ins in our dining area. So, we embarked on a dyeing adventure, opting for a rich mocha hue. The idea was to create a harmonious backdrop, allowing the distinctive teal of our built-ins to truly shine. We hoped this would be the final puzzle piece, bringing coherence to our dining space.
-
The High-Maintenance Reality
Life with the mocha slipcovers, however, proved to be far more demanding than anticipated. After just a week or two, they would inevitably become baggy and messy-looking, losing their tailored appearance. While a quick wash would snap them back into shape, the constant maintenance was exhausting. We found ourselves caught in a perpetual cycle of washing, drying, and wrestling slipcovers back onto chairs—a far cry from the low-stress dining experience we envisioned. It was clear these chairs were demanding more effort than they were worth.
-
Creative (Failed) Painting Endeavors
Frustration mounting, we turned to more radical solutions. First, I attempted to paint one of the chairs a cheerful apple green using textile medium. The vision was a vibrant pop of color, a bold statement. The reality? An epic failure that left us shaking our heads. Not to be defeated, I then tried spray painting them. I rationalized that if it didn’t work, I could always revert to the brown slipcovers. The spray paint did offer a sleeker line, a welcome change from the baggy slipcovers. However, the original swirled pattern of the chair fabric stubbornly showed through in texture, creating a less-than-ideal finish. It was an improvement, but not the seamless transformation we craved.

I distinctly recall ending that spray-painting post with a somewhat deflated confession: “As for how we feel, we’re still sort of on the fence. They’re definitely better (much better) than the green painted chair debacle. And in person we think they’re marginally better than the baggy slipcovers. But we’ll probably recover or replace them someday down the line. There’s probably a lesson in here somewhere about how $25 craigslist chairs might not always be the answer if they have a crazy pattern and don’t fit typical store-bought slipcovers. Ah well, live and learn.” That statement perfectly captured our resigned acceptance of an unsatisfactory outcome. We had poured so much energy and creativity into these chairs, only to conclude that they were a temporary fix at best.
In essence, I took out all my design frustrations on those poor, uncooperative chairs. After the last painting attempt, I gave them the silent treatment for several months, while a quiet resentment brewed. Slowly but surely, the realization dawned: these chairs simply weren’t working. We began facing the music, admitting to ourselves and to those who inquired (like this and this) that our “chair-speriments” had reached a dead end. And then, a moment of clarity: the fifth (or perhaps eighth—who’s counting?) time was indeed the charm! The key wasn’t to desperately try to save those chairs; it was to set them free. This realization was liberating, paving the way for a fresh start and a genuinely successful solution.

The Quest for Comfort and Style: Finding “The Ones”
With the decision made to part ways with our old chairs, we immediately began planning to list them on Craigslist. We hope they find a new home with someone passionate about reupholstery, someone who can truly appreciate their classic shape and give them the fabric facelift they so desperately need. We’ll definitely keep you updated on which brave soul decides to give these chairs another shot at interior design glory! But now, let’s shift our focus to the truly exciting part: the arrival of our new dining chairs, which have unequivocally transformed our dining space.
A Shift in Perspective: Embracing Coziness
These new chairs weren’t just a purchase; they were a revelation. The best part? We love them exactly as they are, no modifications or “chair-speriments” required. This simplified approach was a welcome change after our previous ordeal. The inspiration for a new dining setup actually struck me one evening as I was admiring casual, super comfy dining room arrangements, similar to this inviting scene from West Elm and this charming one from Ballard Designs. It sparked a fundamental question: why do dining chairs always have to be small, and why did we feel compelled to have eight of them?

What if, instead of eight compact chairs, we opted for six large, comfortable armchairs around the table? This shift not only introduced a new level of coziness but also optimized our seating arrangements. We still have ample seating for an additional four people at our kitchen peninsula, which is literally just three steps to the left of the dining table. And for those exceptionally large family gatherings that might exceed nine or ten people, our office offers the perfect solution: a dedicated kids’ table can be set up in the clear middle of the room, just a few steps from the dining area in another direction. Furthermore, seating for six worked perfectly for the 4.5 years we lived in our first house, so even the four extra spots at the peninsula feel like an added bonus. This thoughtful reconfiguration ensures both comfort and flexibility for all our entertaining needs.
The Hunt for Durable Elegance: Wicker and Woven Wonders
My quest then narrowed to finding the ideal armchairs. With young children (and even the occasional messy adult!) in mind, I had a very specific hankering for something wicker or woven. The goal was to introduce texture and warmth without the constant worry of stains that comes with upholstered fabric. This material choice promised both aesthetic appeal and practical durability, a crucial combination for our busy household. The only real bummer was the price tag: most wicker armchairs on the market fell into the hefty $200-300 range per chair, like these $319 options from Ballard Designs, or these $299 ones from Pottery Barn. It felt like a significant investment, especially needing six of them.
Just as I was about to despair, I stumbled upon “the ones.” Four chairs for less than the price of just one of those high-end options! It felt like an angelic chorus had erupted—or, in reality, it was just Clara in the background, channeling her best Katy Perry impression. (For those curious about her musical tastes, her top singers are Katy Perry, The Chipmunks, Adam Levine, and Barney. A truly eclectic mix!). This discovery was a game-changer, promising both the style and functionality we desired without breaking the bank.

The Secret Weapon: Outdoor Chairs on Clearance!
The reason for their incredible markdown? They were actually outdoor chairs! And, serendipitously, it was the end of the season, meaning they were on super clearance. I admit, I was incredibly nervous about buying two sets of four (eight chairs total) sight unseen. My history with chairs had taught me caution. However, a quick check of Target’s policies quickly put my mind at ease:
- I could easily return them to any Target store, avoiding costly return shipping fees if they didn’t work out.
- By using our Target credit card, the shipping was completely free, a significant saving on such a large order.
- Additionally, using the Target card secured an extra 5% off the already discounted price (wahoo!).
This felt like a truly risk-free proposition, a stark contrast to our previous chair-related gambles. Thank goodness, because at this point, I’m practically suspicious of any chair that doesn’t come with a foolproof guarantee! The plan was to purchase all eight, use six, and then list the remaining two on Craigslist. We hoped to sell them for at least $62 each, as they would be new and in their boxes, and even uglier outdoor chairs in our local classifieds were listed for $75. This strategy would ideally keep our per-chair cost at the impressive $62. Update: Many of you suggested we keep the extra two for our deck or patio. While that was our first instinct, we tried them in a few outdoor spots and felt we were forcing them. We’d rather sell them and wait for something truly perfect for those spaces.

Arrival and Unveiling: A Moment of Triumph
Then came the agonizing wait. We crossed all our appendages and knocked on every piece of wood we could find, anxiously anticipating their arrival (which, by the way, always makes Burger bark enthusiastically – a story for another time!). And then, Huzzah! They arrived, and they were absolutely awesome! The moment they were set up, I immediately felt the urge to sit cross-legged at the table for hours, drawing with Clara—a wish I promptly fulfilled. Their cozy, armchair-like quality makes them perfect for homework sessions and other activities, promising comfort for extended periods. I can already envision lively family dinners with grandparents and John’s sister, where we can all sit and chat for a nice long time. (Though, let’s be real, with a toddler, I’ll probably be running around while they sit and chat!).
Here’s a shot of John looking completely relaxed in one of the new chairs. It’s such a relief to know they are both incredibly comfortable and the perfect height for our dining table. Whew! The long search was finally over, and the result exceeded our expectations.

Unbeatable Durability and Practicality
Another fantastic advantage of these chairs being designed for outdoor use is their incredibly durable seat cushions. Made to withstand the elements, they are absolutely impervious to spills and incredibly easy to wipe clean. Most liquids simply bead up and roll off, making them a dream for a family with young children. This feature alone significantly reduces stress during mealtimes and creative projects. I promise to keep you updated on how these babies wear over time, and how they perform during homework sessions, art projects, and our bigger family dinners. So far, they’ve been phenomenal for our little crew and have already passed the ultimate Play-Doh test! The coolest thing about them being outdoor chairs is the sheer ease of maintenance: if they ever need a serious clean, we can literally bring them outside and spray them down with a hose. Talk about low-maintenance luxury!

I also absolutely adore how everyone at the table gets armrests. It creates a wonderfully inclusive feeling, almost as if everyone is seated at the “head of the table.” This is particularly fitting for a round table, which by nature, doesn’t have a designated head. This thoughtful design element fosters a sense of equality and comfort, inviting everyone to linger and enjoy the conversation.

The Sweet Taste of Success: A Home Transformed
We are truly thankful. Seriously, there were moments when I thought we would never crack this chair code. I half-jokingly imagined us in 2040, still blogging something ridiculous like, “So we cryogenically froze the chairs, and we think that’ll finally work! Fingers crossed!” It’s astonishing how failing a few times can make even the simplest accomplishments feel monumental. Finally, after almost two years of living here, we have dining chairs we genuinely love! Somebody strike up the band and let the confetti fly!
Here’s the inviting view from the kitchen, showcasing how harmoniously the slatted wood stools at the island and the woven dining chairs work together. There’s no feeling of them being too “matchy-matchy”; instead, they each bring a distinct yet complementary texture and warmth to the adjoining rooms. This thoughtful combination prevents the space from feeling overwhelmed, a common challenge when integrating so much seating in an open-concept living area. The natural tones and varied textures create an organic flow that is both appealing and functional.

And so, we conclude the epic 2010-2012 “Chair Olympics” hosted right here in our home. Yes, we may have lost the first six events, and honestly, we bombed quite spectacularly a few times. But I might just be found standing on one of these beautiful new chairs, proudly raising my metaphorical gold medal and happy-crying at the crowd. This journey proves that persistence truly pays off, leading you to those “this is IT!” butterflies, even when the path is anything but easy. In the end, we are incredibly happy that we didn’t have to spend a fortune on a bunch of chairs, which was a significant fear ever since we invested in our big, beautiful dining table. Even with the financial loss we took on those first chairs (including all our desperate attempts to save them), our total spent is still a few hundred dollars less than that initial fear—and will hopefully be even less once we successfully sell the old ones on Craigslist. Sometimes, you just have to try something, like those Parsons chairs, and live with them for a while to truly learn that they aren’t meant for you. It’s much like buying that glittery purple eyeshadow to learn that no (NO!) it’s not going to work, and you absolutely need to try something else.
Your Home, Your Journey: Sharing Design Dilemmas
What “oops” moments have you guys lived through lately? Are there any other furniture switch-outs or upgrades currently underway in your homes? Between our new kitchen stools and these incredible dining chairs, we’ve collectively deemed this phase of our home-making journey “turning a corner.” It feels like we are finally refining things, resolving those lingering nagging issues, and intentionally incorporating more texture and natural tones—elements we deeply loved in our first house. We’re skillfully blending these with the vibrant pops of color that we’ve grown to adore even more since moving into our current house. It’s actually quite normal for us to take a year or two to truly get our bearings in a new space, so needless to say, it’s incredibly fun to finally be making those definitive “that’s it!” tweaks in the rooms we use most frequently. We always knew we’d get there someday, never mind the five other untouched rooms that are still patiently awaiting their turn. Haha!
