Last fall, a dream became reality as I embarked on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Italy, spending glorious days eating, exploring, and marveling at the wonders of Florence, complemented by a charming day trip to Venice. Joined by three cherished friends, this experience truly felt like it was plucked straight from the pages of a travel fantasy. I’ve already shared my secrets for packing light for an Italian adventure, but today, get ready for the full itinerary – a comprehensive recap of every breathtaking sight, delectable meal, and memorable activity that shaped our incredible trip. If you’re currently contemplating a trip to Florence, perhaps with a scenic detour to Venice, this guide is tailor-made for you. Discover what made our journey exceptionally enjoyable, from hidden culinary gems to iconic art, and learn from our experiences with a few things we’d happily skip if we were to plan it all over again, saving you both time and money on your next Italian escapade.

My travel companions for this Italian odyssey were Elsie and Emma, the creative sisters behind A Beautiful Mess, and Elise, the visionary force behind Elise Joy. Over the past few years, our quartet has cultivated a tradition of exploring each other’s hometowns, indulging in antiquing excursions, and savoring delightful cuisine. To commemorate Emma’s 40th birthday, we decided to elevate our tradition with an international adventure. After much deliberation and excitement, Florence, Italy, emerged as our unanimous choice, with the irresistible allure of a day trip to Venice woven into our plans. Our decision was rooted in a shared desire to explore Italy for the first time, believing these iconic cities would perfectly satisfy our collective interests in Renaissance art, magnificent architecture, vibrant outdoor markets, and, of course, the unparalleled joy of authentic Italian pasta. This “girls’ trip” was designed around a theme of creativity and empowerment, seeking inspiration in every corner of these historic lands.

To streamline our travel planning, we enlisted the expertise of a travel agent, a decision that proved invaluable in coordinating our intricate itinerary, securing ideal accommodations, and booking essential tours. While I had previously experienced a curated art trip to France arranged by a gallery, this was my first personal foray into using a travel agent for a comprehensive international vacation. The relief from the usual planning stresses was immense, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the anticipation of the trip. However, as with any intricate plan, a couple of activities didn’t quite unfold as expected – a valuable lesson I’ll elaborate on later, which might just save you some precious time and euros. Rest assured, our Florence adventure was largely seamless and filled with moments of pure delight.
Our home away from home in Florence was the exquisite Hotel Il Guelfo Bianco, a charming boutique hotel nestled in the city’s heart. The view from my room alone (as seen in the photo above) was a daily dose of inspiration. I cannot speak highly enough of this establishment; it boasted a welcoming lobby, a magnificent atrium that invited relaxation, and several intimate rooftop areas perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration. My room on the fourth floor even offered direct access to a private patio, a true luxury. What we particularly appreciated was the thoughtful inclusion of unscheduled time in our daily itinerary. Each day typically featured one planned activity, such as a guided tour or a museum visit, followed by ample free time to wander, discover, dine, and shop at our leisure. This flexibility allowed for spontaneous moments, like one glorious morning spent chatting and painting watercolor landscapes on the hotel rooftop – an activity that unanimously ranked among our favorite memories of the entire week, perfectly embodying our trip’s creative spirit.

For those interested in capturing their own artistic moments, I brought along this small notebook specifically for painting. Elise generously shared her fantastic paint kit from Etsy, and for those looking to replicate the experience, a very similar watercolor kit is readily available.
Navigating Italy: From Arrivals to Scenic Day Trips
Our journey to Florence began with individual flights from our respective home cities. Elsie, Emma, and I shared a connecting flight from Chicago to Munich, and then onwards to Florence, making the initial leg of the journey a shared adventure. Upon arrival, a pre-booked taxi service, arranged by our efficient travel agent, whisked us directly to our hotel. From that moment on, for the next four glorious days, Florence became our pedestrian playground. This enchanting city is remarkably walkable, with most of its iconic sites conveniently clustered within easy reach. You can truly traverse the entire city on foot, soaking in every historical detail and charming alleyway – a particularly delightful experience if you’re blessed with weather as beautiful as we were. Our visit in early November offered consistently clear and sunny days, perfect for long strolls. So, pack your most comfortable shoes, and prepare to explore Florence to your heart’s content, uncovering its treasures at a leisurely pace.

Beyond our airport transfers, the only other mode of transport we utilized throughout the week was a comfortable train for our memorable day trip to Venice. Our travel agent had diligently secured these tickets in advance, providing a sense of ease. However, when we decided to depart Venice earlier to ensure a more restful night before our early morning flight home, we found changing the tickets ourselves to be a surprisingly straightforward process. The train stations in both Florence and Venice are conveniently located, easily accessible by foot, which made our inter-city travel exceptionally smooth and stress-free. This seamless public transport experience is a testament to Italy’s efficient infrastructure, making multi-city travel a breeze for visitors.
Exploring Florence: A Journey Through Art, Culture, and Craft
Let’s dive into the core of our Florence adventure, detailing the key sites, engaging activities, and insightful tours that formed the backbone of our itinerary. Following this, I’ll share our delightful discoveries in shopping, culinary experiences, and other unforgettable highlights.
Women of Florence Walking Tour: This private walking tour, meticulously arranged by our travel agent, was a resounding success and an absolute favorite. We were paired with an incredible female guide, a lifelong resident of Florence who was around our age. Her passion and deep knowledge of the city were palpable, making for an enriching and highly personalized experience. As it was just the four of us and our guide, she actively sought our input on what most captivated our interest. We expressed a preference for paintings over statues, a love for exquisite architecture, and a particular enthusiasm for anything that highlighted artistic women – truly aligning with our trip’s overarching theme of “creativity + girl power.” Our guide was nothing short of amazing, expertly adapting the tour on the fly. After showcasing some magnificent paintings and architectural marvels, she spontaneously led us to a tiny artisan shop, where we had the privilege of meeting a female luthier crafting exquisite Stradivarius violins. Her delicate handiwork was visible through a glass window, captivating passersby. We discovered she was originally from California and enjoyed a fascinating chat with her, a truly epic, unplanned encounter. Our guide also masterfully navigated us through numerous iconic Florentine landmarks, generously sharing local tips for the best coffee spots and delightful lunch recommendations. This tour not only introduced us to Florence’s famous sights but also offered an intimate glimpse into its living artistic heritage and empowered women.

Below stands the awe-inspiring Duomo, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture that utterly captivated us. The scale and intricate details of this iconic cathedral are truly breathtaking in person, far surpassing what any photograph can convey. Its sheer grandeur and historical significance are profound.

Florence, as an ancient city, is a veritable treasure trove of magnificent architecture and heart-stopping craftsmanship. The artistry and dedication poured into these centuries-old structures are simply unparalleled in modern times. For this reason, I cannot recommend the Women of Florence Walking Tour enough; it truly illuminates the city’s rich heritage in a unique and engaging way.

Guinti Odeon Cinema & Bookstore: This unique establishment, a fascinating fusion of a cinema and a bookstore, proved to be an unexpected delight. It offered a wonderful opportunity to simply wander and soak in its charming ambiance. The building itself is a marvel of beautiful architecture, providing a stunning backdrop to the vast collection of intriguing books. We visited a couple of times, and on each occasion, a film was playing, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. The upper viewing area, from which one could glimpse the movie, was particularly striking, truly a work of art in itself. The extensive selection of books, available in both English and Italian, ensured there was something to captivate every literary taste. This gem is more than just a place to buy books or see a movie; it’s an experience that celebrates culture and design.

Uffizi Gallery: This magnificent art museum was, without a doubt, our collective favorite in Florence. It is a dense repository of iconic works that left us spellbound. Seeing Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” in person was a truly transcendent experience; its beauty and grandeur were far beyond what any reproduction can convey, literally taking our breath away. Beyond the masterpieces on the walls, the museum’s hand-painted ceilings, connecting various rooms, were mesmerizing in their own right, a testament to the era’s pervasive artistic excellence. We opted for another private guided tour here, and to our absolute astonishment and delight, our guide was the same wonderful woman who had led our walking tour the day before! She revealed that in her two decades as a guide, this had never happened, a rare stroke of luck given that over forty guides work for her company. We felt incredibly fortunate to share this profound artistic journey with her again, gaining deeper insights into these timeless treasures.

Gucci Garden (Galleria): This attraction proved to be a surprising favorite for our entire group, a true visual feast that transcends mere fashion. It’s not just a museum showcasing iconic Gucci designs from various eras; it offers a captivating journey through the brand’s creative process. A particular highlight was a room dedicated to the intricate art of scarf design, which we found utterly fascinating. Equally enchanting was the stunning room filled with bags, strategically placed alongside mirrors to create an optical illusion of endless luxury – a truly fun and Instagrammable spot. The Gucci Garden felt akin to a stylish science museum, engaging visitors with its innovative displays and historical context. It was also remarkably affordable and offered a quick, yet deeply satisfying, cultural experience, making it a highly recommended stop for anyone visiting Florence, fashion enthusiast or not.

Ikigai Tattoo Studio: For Elsie and me, a tradition of getting small tattoos during our international travels began a few years ago during our trip to France. We decided this empowering ritual should continue, and Emma enthusiastically joined us for this Florence installment. Our search for the perfect studio involved a simple Google query, followed by a careful review of client portfolios to discern artistic styles. Ikigai Tattoo Studio immediately stood out with its numerous female tattoo artists – a personal preference of mine, as I adore the delicate linework often achieved by women artists on my arms and wrists. Their online images showcased exceptionally crisp and well-executed designs, making our choice an easy one. We arrived without an appointment, and within approximately 1.5 hours, all three of us emerged with beautiful new tattoos. The artists were incredibly welcoming, talented, and professional, making the entire experience a true highlight of our trip. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a memorable, artistic souvenir.

Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Venice): During our enchanting day trip to Venice, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection emerged as the absolute highlight. While we again opted for a private guided tour, I honestly believe that for this particular museum, it wasn’t strictly necessary. It’s a comparatively smaller museum, uniquely housed within an actual residence, which lends itself to a more intimate and manageable exploration. Don’t misunderstand; our tour guide provided invaluable insider knowledge, enriching our understanding of the collection and its context. However, the museum’s intimate scale means you could just as easily enjoy a self-guided wander, soaking in the art and atmosphere at your own pace without feeling overwhelmed, unlike some of the larger institutions. A visit wouldn’t be complete without exploring the tranquil garden, the final resting place of the iconic Peggy Guggenheim herself, alongside her beloved pets. Her delightfully eccentric personality and groundbreaking vision perfectly resonated with our “creativity + girl power” theme, solidifying her museum and home as a testament to a true visionary. It’s a must-see for art lovers and anyone seeking inspiration in Venice.

Culinary Delights: Where We Savored Flavors in Florence

Buca San Giovanni: This restaurant was unequivocally the best dining experience of our trip! We stumbled upon this local treasure thanks to a friendly local we befriended. Tucked away in an ancient building, you descend a flight of steps into a hidden, cove-like dining room, which adds to its clandestine charm. The food was absolutely fantastic, from appetizers to dessert, and the service was impeccable. It’s clearly a beloved spot among Florentines, and I’m convinced we would never have discovered it on our own. If you seek an authentic Florentine culinary experience away from the main tourist hubs, do not miss Buca San Giovanni. It’s a true hidden gem for exceptional Italian cuisine.

Paszkowski: Recommended by our tour guide as a local favorite, Paszkowski is a wonderful bakery and coffee shop offering an array of delightful treats. While it certainly attracts its fair share of tourists, the quality of the coffee was excellent, and the pastries were fresh and delicious. Its inviting outdoor seating area made it a perfect spot for people-watching, allowing us to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Florence while enjoying our morning coffee and sweet bites. It’s an ideal choice for a casual breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up.

Gilli: Another fantastic café endorsed by our knowledgeable local tour guide, Gilli is renowned for its excellent coffee, rich hot chocolate, and satisfying lunch options. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience, opting for a selection of small plates and coffee while seated outdoors. It was here, amidst the bustling Florentine street life, that we had the serendipitous encounter with the local who guided us to Buca San Giovanni, our trip’s favorite restaurant. Gilli’s historic charm and prime location make it an ideal spot for a leisurely meal or simply to savor a drink while observing the world go by.

Cacio E Pepe: For lunch, we ventured to Cacio E Pepe, where we all eagerly ordered their namesake specialty – and it was absolutely FANTASTIC. We unanimously ranked it as our favorite pasta dish of the entire trip, a decision that speaks volumes given the abundance of incredible pasta we consumed. It was truly that good, a perfect example of simple ingredients elevated to culinary perfection. This restaurant is a must-visit for any pasta lover in Florence, offering an authentic taste of Roman classic done perfectly.
La Bottega Di Via Maggio: This charming, small restaurant, with only a couple of tables, offers a truly intimate dining experience where everything is made fresh to order. We indulged in three different types of gnocchi, and each dish was a testament to their dedication to fresh ingredients and traditional preparation. The tender, flavorful gnocchi left a lasting impression, making this a wonderful choice for those seeking a cozy, authentic Italian meal crafted with care. It’s a delightful spot to experience homemade Italian cuisine.

Gelato… literally anywhere: Our Florentine adventure would not have been complete without copious amounts of gelato. We sampled countless gelato shops across the city, and without exaggeration, every single one delivered a delicious experience. Our hot tip, a consensus among our group, is that cherry emerges as the undisputed best gelato flavor – far surpassing pistachio, caramel, or any heavier options. While we admit this might just be the opinion of four Americans, we wholeheartedly encourage you to try it and decide for yourselves! The joy of Italian gelato is in its abundance and delightful variety.

Retail Therapy: Our Favorite Shopping Destinations in Florence
Ugo Poggi: This exquisite shop, specializing in plates and glassware, was a feast for the eyes. The collection of plates, cups, mugs, and platters was simply unbelievably beautiful, showcasing exceptional Italian craftsmanship. While some items were undoubtedly high-end, we also discovered many pieces that felt surprisingly affordable, offering a chance to take home a piece of Florentine artistry. Elsie, for instance, found a gorgeous platter that she plans to treasure forever. Ugo Poggi is definitely a delightful spot to pop into, whether you’re looking for a luxurious souvenir or simply to admire the stunning designs.
Santo Spirito Vintage Market: This unique market, held only on the second Sunday of each month, was a major draw for us, and we partially planned our arrival to coincide with it. It was absolutely GREAT! In stark contrast to another market we spent hours walking to on a different day, which proved underwhelming, Santo Spirito was incredibly charming and rewarding. While it required a bit of diligent digging through various booths, the treasures we uncovered were truly special: beautiful vintage pins and jewelry, captivating old art pieces, lovely silk scarves, and even some unique vintage bags and impressive paintings. We even heard a rumor that Sia from the “Real Housewives of New York” was there the same day, though we sadly missed her. This market offers a truly authentic and exciting vintage shopping experience in Florence, brimming with potential finds.

Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella: This historic establishment was a must-visit, highly recommended by Elsie, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. Housed within a gorgeous old building, it’s a sensory delight, offering an exquisite array of perfumes, luxurious soaps, candles, and other beautiful home items. We were particularly captivated by a charming pottery pomegranate, which exuded a delightful scent, leading all of us to pine over it (though we worried about its fragility during the journey home). The perfumes and soaps were equally stunning, but perhaps the most beautiful aspect of all was the building itself, a testament to centuries of elegance and artistry. It’s more than a shop; it’s an immersive experience in Florentine history and olfactory luxury.
Calzaiuoli Leather Factory: Serendipity struck when the local we met, who shared his restaurant recommendations, turned out to be the owner of this exceptional leather goods shop. Let me tell you, the quality and beauty of their products were undeniable. Both Elise and I left with gorgeous leather bags, unable to resist the lure of that buttery soft, authentic Italian leather. The craftsmanship was superb, and the personalized connection to the owner made the purchase even more special. For anyone seeking high-quality leather goods in Florence, Calzaiuoli Leather Factory is an absolute must-visit, offering beautiful and durable souvenirs.
Learning from Experience: Activities We’d Skip Next Time

The Vasari Corridor: Our travel agent had booked this tour directly following our private walking tour of the magnificent Uffizi Gallery, and it turned out to be, quite literally, a largely empty white hallway. Next time, we would definitively skip it. Historically, the corridor was famously adorned with a vast collection of incredible portraits, which have since been relocated and can now be admired within the main Uffizi Gallery itself (where we indeed saw and loved them!). Therefore, the corridor, in its current state, was truly just a corridor. It featured a few white busts and offered a cool, albeit brief, glimpse into a church from above, but beyond that, it was a freshly drywalled passage devoid of any historical information, guides, or interpretive signage. We all unanimously agreed that the 20 Euros each of us spent could have been far better allocated. While the Uffizi Gallery itself is an absolute must-see, we strongly advise against paying extra for what we affectionately dubbed “the bore-idor / snore-idor.”
Row Venice: This activity, in theory, sounds like a fantastic, unique Venetian experience. However, a rather comical miscommunication between us and our travel agent led to an unexpected adventure. We had envisioned a leisurely, romantic gondola ride complete with wine and food – the classic, picturesque Venetian cliché. Consequently, we dressed the part, with me sporting little heeled boots, and arrived with our paint kits, ready to serenely observe the canals, chat, and paint. To our surprise, “Cichetto Row” (the name of the tour here) actually involves guests doing the rowing themselves! It felt like a challenge straight out of “The Amazing Race.” Upon our arrival, our guide, dressed in athletic wear, greeted us with a telling “So… do you guys row?” We exchanged bewildered glances and realized, “Um, no… there’s been some sort of mistake.” This was the last activity of our day, and after thoroughly enjoying the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, our priority was to return to the hotel to pack and get sufficient sleep before an early morning flight home. With good humor, we explained the misunderstanding, offering to let her keep the money, and politely backed out. She honestly seemed quite relieved, noting our less-than-athletic attire. The extra time to rest and pack before our early flights was, in hindsight, much appreciated. However, if you’re seeking a physical challenge and an adventurous, hands-on experience, Row Venice could very well be the perfect activity for you!
