Clever Closet Shelf for Built-In Dog Crate

Transforming Chaos into Calm: Our DIY Multi-Functional Closet Makeover

Every home has those chameleon spaces – rooms that gracefully shift roles to accommodate life’s changing demands. For us, our bedroom has evolved into a dynamic office, a vibrant playroom, and a welcoming guest bedroom. Central to this multi-faceted space is its closet. Not just any closet, mind you, but the very one that once housed my entire wardrobe before we embarked on the journey of installing dedicated built-in wardrobes in our main bedroom. That upgrade was a game-changer, granting me the luxury of storing my clothes in the same room where I slept – a small but significant victory in domestic organization!

The Challenge: A Closet in Constant Conflict

What was once a conventional wardrobe space, then briefly a bonus storage zone (famously occupied by nothing but Burger’s crate), had recently devolved into a chaotic catch-all. The transformation was dramatic, and not in a good way:

Another 'before' image showing an even more cluttered closet with a dog crate and a pile of linens

The reasons for its disarray were twofold: firstly, its storage demands had multiplied significantly, and secondly, it was failing spectacularly at meeting them. Beyond being a general repository for miscellaneous items like seasonal coats, surplus books, and other odds and ends, its primary functions were to shelter Burger, our chihuahua, in his cozy crate, and to neatly contain all the bedding for the fold-out guest bed tucked away in the sleeper sofa. Initially, these guest linens resided directly on the guest bed, which thoughtfully freed up valuable closet real estate. However, with shifting needs, the closet became their new home, creating an immediate conflict.

These two essential functions – dog crate and guest bedding storage – were locked in a perpetual battle. Every time we packed Burger and his crate for a trip, sliding it out would inevitably trigger an avalanche of linens, cascading to the floor. Upon our return, the bedding would be haphazardly shoved back atop his crate, each time less tidily than the last. It was a cycle of mild frustration and mounting disorganization that we simply couldn’t ignore any longer.

Given that this closet door typically remains open for much of the day (Burger, a creature of comfort, enjoys lounging in his crate), the visual clutter was a constant reminder of a project waiting to happen. We knew it was high time to reclaim control over the mess. Our initial plan was simple yet effective: construct a sturdy shelf to prevent the linens from toppling every single time Burger’s crate was moved. So, with a renewed sense of purpose, we cleared out the bulk of the existing clutter, making way for a permanent solution.

Our Simple Solution: Building a Functional Closet Shelf

Drawing inspiration from a lower shelf that had once graced this very closet (you might spot the faint outline or a white board remnant on the left wall in the ‘before’ photos), we envisioned a straightforward, robust system. The goal was to install two support rails on opposing sides of the closet, upon which a substantial wooden plank would rest, creating a much-needed divider. With this clear objective, we set off to Home Depot, our trusty source for DIY essentials.

At the store, we carefully selected our materials: one 1×2 piece of lumber for the support rails and two 1×8 planks for the shelf itself. To save time and ensure precise cuts, we utilized Home Depot’s convenient cutting service, having all pieces pre-cut to the exact dimensions required for our closet space. This not only streamlined the project but also ensured a professional finish.

Gathering and Prepping Materials

The two 1×8 planks were intended to sit side-by-side, forming a spacious 16-inch deep shelf. These would be securely supported by the 1×2 side rails. I also wisely cut an extra 1×2 for the back wall, thinking it might be needed for additional stability. As it turned out, the side rails provided ample support, rendering the extra piece unnecessary – but it’s always better to have spare wood than to run out mid-project!

With the materials ready, the next crucial step was determining the ideal shelf height. We placed Burger’s crate back into the closet and measured from the top of the baseboards, leaving a comfortable amount of ‘breathing room’ above his head. It’s worth noting that while Burger is a small dog, his crate is over 12 inches tall, so this wasn’t a tiny measurement by any means. This careful consideration ensured his continued comfort and easy access to his den.

Installing the Shelf: A Step-by-Step Guide

After meticulously marking level lines along both sidewalls of the closet, I positioned the 1×2 rails and secured them firmly into place, using three screws per rail. While the items planned for this shelf weren’t exceptionally heavy, I did manage to anchor at least one screw on each side directly into a wall stud, adding extra reassurance. For those planning to store heavier items like books or other substantial objects, I highly recommend locating additional studs or utilizing robust wall anchors for maximum support. Once both side rails were securely attached, I carefully placed the two 1×8 planks on top of the newly installed supports, verifying with a level that everything was perfectly horizontal. Thankfully, it was.

You might observe that our support rails extend slightly beyond the shelf planks. This intentional design choice provided a bit of ‘wiggle room’ during installation and offers future flexibility should we ever wish to extend the shelf depth further. You’ll also notice the shelf isn’t as deep as the closet itself. This is due to a functional obstruction: the pipe for our radon mitigation system runs vertically up the left wall of the closet (visible as a white tube emerging from the floor, easily mistaken for molding from certain angles). This large plastic pipe prevented me from making the left rail any deeper. While I could have attempted to cut the shelf around the pipe in that corner, the minor loss of depth wasn’t significant enough to warrant the extra effort.

Of course, a final, crucial check was to ensure Burger’s crate still fit comfortably underneath the newly installed shelf. Success! Our furry friend’s living space remained intact.

Beyond the Shelf: A Full Closet Refresh and Organization

Next on the agenda was painting. As those “before” pictures probably hinted, the closet walls themselves were far from pristine. I seized this opportunity not just to paint the new shelf a fresh semi-gloss white, but to give the entire closet a complete makeover. This included a fresh coat of paint on all the walls, the existing hanging bar, and even the back of the door. This painting phase, while transformative, proved to be the most time-intensive part of the entire project. We opted for Freshaire off-the-shelf white semi-gloss paint, a no-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) option, which was perfect for our family, especially with our little one around.

Optimizing Storage for a Multi-Functional Space

With the entire space “freshened up” and sparkling clean, it was time for the satisfying task of putting everything back in – well, almost everything. This organizational overhaul provided an excellent opportunity to pare down and optimize. We strategically reduced the volume of guest bedroom linens by simply storing the sheets folded directly on the mattress within the sofa bed itself. This allowed us to keep only two pillows in the newly organized closet. The other two, intended for guests who might need extra comfort, now reside neatly atop Sherry’s wardrobe in our bedroom. This thoughtful redistribution meant the remaining bedding could be stored much more stylishly and accessibly on our brand-new shelf, instantly elevating the entire area’s appeal. The transformation was undeniable!

The true genius of this new setup, however, lies in its functionality: we can now effortlessly remove Burger’s crate for travel without triggering a cascade of guest bedding. Isn’t it wonderful when a little order brings so much peace to the closet?

We also took the opportunity to significantly reduce the number of hanging items. All unused or outdated winter coats and various bags were gratefully donated, making space for items that truly belonged. The remaining essential coats and jackets were relocated to my bedroom wardrobe, a move made possible by my own decluttering efforts, where I had ditched some past-their-prime work shirts. What remains now is ample free space, thoughtfully left open for guests to hang their clothes when they visit. A couple of bags that Sherry decided to keep on hand also found a surprisingly charming spot, adding a touch of personality to the streamlined space.

While we were at it, we also tackled the upper shelf, giving it a much-needed tidy-up. We pulled out a few good reads destined for donation to our local bookstore, neatly wrangled the scarves and gloves that had a tendency to creep out of their basket, and organized some spare surge protectors. Here’s a quick tip for extension cords and surge protectors: to prevent them from unraveling into a tangled mess, wrap the wire neatly and then plug the male end into one of its own outlets, creating a tightly bundled, easily stored package. Oh, and of course, Sherry’s stack of mailing envelopes for YHL shop orders now has a designated, tidy home.

Adding a Personal Touch: Clara’s Growth Chart

The final update to the closet was a purely delightful one. Stacy from Name Your Design had recently sent Clara a beautifully personalized growth chart as a baby gift. We immediately realized the inside of this newly refreshed closet door was the perfect, hidden-but-accessible spot to hang it. To complete the charming look, we used a whimsical ceramic pig hook, a delightful local find from Mongrel for just $5. You know how Sherry adores ceramic animals!

The Transformed Closet: An Organized Oasis

All in all, we can confidently say that we’ve transformed our closet into a far more pleasant and functional space. The difference is truly remarkable, both aesthetically and practically. You simply cannot imagine the relief and anticipation we feel about being able to effortlessly pull out Burger’s crate for our next road trip without the dread of pillows and blankets collapsing upon us. This simple DIY project has brought a significant dose of peace and order to our daily lives.
