Discovering Unique Treasures at Richmond’s Handmade Holiday Craft Fair
Two Sundays ago, our anticipation peaked as we journeyed to the highly anticipated Richmond Craft Mafia’s signature event, the Handmade Holiday craft show. Imagine stepping into the vibrant, curated world of Etsy, but in a bustling, tangible marketplace brimming with energy, creativity, and the undeniable charm of face-to-face interaction with the makers themselves. As one of our friends perfectly encapsulated it, it was truly like experiencing Etsy… but in real life.

Our ongoing passion lies in supporting and connecting with local (and even a few not-so-local) artists and artisans. We arrived at Handmade Holiday with modest expectations: to feast our eyes on some genuinely cool creations, perhaps exchange greetings with a familiar face or two, and maybe, just maybe, snag a gift or two for upcoming occasions. What unfolded, however, far surpassed our hopes. We were utterly captivated by an incredible abundance of unique goods, joyfully bumped into dozens of cherished friends and fellow blog enthusiasts, and ended up acquiring a generous bounty of gifts. Well, to be entirely transparent, these weren’t just any gifts; they were delightful treats we couldn’t resist bringing home for ourselves, a testament to the irresistible allure of handmade artistry.
Our Handmade Haul: A Snapshot of Creative Finds
Upon returning home, we eagerly laid out our handmade treasures on the counter, a colorful and diverse collection representing the spirit of the Richmond creative community. This snapshot captures the essence of our successful hunt for unique, artisanal pieces, each with its own story and charm. It’s moments like these that truly underscore the magic of discovering one-of-a-kind items directly from the hands that crafted them.

1. A Whimsical Print from Zou Zou’s Basement
Our first delightful acquisition was a charming print from Zou Zou’s Basement, priced at $25. This particular piece, a vibrant print of a mixed media rabbit painting, immediately caught our eye with its playful spirit and rich, engaging colors. We found it to be incredibly fun and brimming with personality. Interestingly, we initially gravitated towards an equally captivating elephant print. However, at the eleventh hour, our daughter Clara, with her keen eye and decisive pronouncement of “Bunny rabbit!”, swayed our decision, leading us to switch to the adorable rabbit. It perfectly encapsulates the joy and spontaneity of shopping at such a dynamic event, where even the smallest family member can influence a cherished purchase.
2. Engaging Robot Coloring Sheet from Turnerbots
The thoughtful artisans at Turnerbots generously included a free robot coloring sheet with our purchase of a handful of their delightful ornaments (which you’ll hear more about in item #5). This unexpected gift proved to be an absolute hit! Clara, who has recently developed into quite the coloring fanatic (as we’ve previously shared in our desk-building post), had an absolute blast bringing the robot to life with her crayons as soon as we arrived home. It was a wonderful gesture that highlighted the friendly and community-oriented atmosphere prevalent among the vendors.

3. Vibrant Canvas Paintings by Amy Keith Barney
We were fortunate to discover two small, captivating canvas paintings from the talented Amy Keith Barney, each acquired for a mere $15. While Amy primarily specializes in the intricate art of stained glass, these particular pieces, with their burst of bright, cheerful colors, felt absolutely perfect for Clara’s budding frame wall. It’s truly remarkable to find such amazing little original paintings at such an accessible price point, offering a unique opportunity to bring genuine artistry into our home without breaking the bank. Their vibrant hues promise to add a lively touch to Clara’s personal space, making them a truly special find.

4. A Charming Virginia-shaped Ornament from Funnel Cloud Studio
The moment we spotted the distinctive Virginia-shaped ornament from Funnel Cloud Studio, priced at $7, we were instantly smitten. As avid admirers of maps and geographical art, this piece had us at hello. Its unique design celebrating our home state was simply irresistible. We were also quite tempted by one of her larger Virginia prints, but, with a concerted effort, we managed to practice a smidge of much-needed restraint. For those with connections to neighboring states, it’s worth noting that Funnel Cloud Studio also crafts charming Maryland and DC-shaped pieces, making them perfect gifts for proud locals or anyone with a special connection to these areas.

5. Personalized Ceramic Letter Ornaments from Turnerbots
Returning to the wonderful artisans at Turnerbots, we excitedly picked up four ceramic letter ornaments, a fantastic deal at just $7 for the set. We selected one for each member of our little family: Clara, myself, Sherry, and even our beloved pet, Burger. Turnerbots is particularly known for their delightful, candy-colored pottery, which often features cool vases and wonderfully cheeky robot designs. These letter ornaments not only add a personal touch to our holiday decor but also serve as a constant reminder of the vibrant and imaginative artistry that characterizes their entire collection. It’s a joy to support artists who pour so much creativity into their craft.

6. A Wealth of Business Cards: Connecting with Local Makers
Beyond our direct purchases, we amassed a significant collection of business cards from all sorts of incredible vendors. Truly, every single booth at Handmade Holiday was worth a stop, showcasing a diverse range of talent and innovation. These cards aren’t just paper; they’re doorways to further exploration, allowing us to revisit and support these talented independent makers long after the fair has concluded. They represent the vibrant ecosystem of the craft community, enabling connections that extend far beyond a single event.
7. A Unique Letterpress Card from Almanac Industries
Among our free finds was a beautifully crafted letterpress card from Almanac Industries. Their booth was, without a doubt, one of the coolest and most inspiring at the entire fair. The sheer passion for their craft radiated from everything they presented. The artistry of letterpress, with its tactile quality and deep impressions, is always captivating, and Almanac Industries clearly excels at it. We were particularly amused and delighted to find that our initials were coincidentally on display within their setup—well, Sherry’s, Burger’s, and mine, at least. Had that “P” been a “C” for Clara, we truly would have been downright giddy! It’s these small, serendipitous moments that make exploring craft fairs so incredibly special and memorable.

Beyond Our Purchases: More Artistic Discoveries from Handmade Holiday
While we couldn’t possibly support every single vendor we admired with a purchase, we felt it was imperative to show them some love and appreciation by sharing their incredible work here. The talent and creativity on display were simply overwhelming, and these artisans deserve every bit of recognition. Each booth was a microcosm of passion, skill, and unique vision, collectively making Handmade Holiday an unforgettable experience for anyone who appreciates the art of making.
Whimsical Wonders from MonkeyDogStudio
First up, we were utterly charmed by the “Dangerous Animal” notebooks from MonkeyDogStudio. These notebooks are not just practical; they’re miniature works of humorous art. Sherry and I found ourselves in a delightful disagreement over which animal illustration was the funniest. I personally cast my vote for the octopus cleverly armed with ninja throwing stars – a true master of disguise and combat. Sherry, however, nearly collapsed with laughter upon seeing the squirrel nonchalantly holding a pistol. It’s this kind of witty, unexpected creativity that truly makes handmade goods stand out and sparks joy in everyone who encounters them.

Chic Birds with Attitude from Bowerbox Press
Speaking of cheeky animals, we were also greatly impressed by the cool woodblock prints and cards featuring stylish birds with fresh, punny attitudes from Bowerbox Press. Their “Yo Momma!” designs, for instance, perfectly blended sophisticated aesthetics with playful humor. The craftsmanship involved in woodblock printing—a traditional art form that creates unique textures and depth—was evident in every piece. These birds weren’t just illustrations; they had personality and a distinct sense of style, making their cards and prints perfect for adding a touch of quirky elegance to any message or decor.

Humorous Crocheted Creations from Needle Noodles & Lazymuse Productions
Continuing the delightful theme of craftiness fused with a sense of humor, we absolutely adored the funny crocheted items on display. From Needle Noodles, we encountered whimsical creations like a charming jellyfish and an imaginative ray-gun, both meticulously crocheted with incredible detail. It’s astounding to see how yarn and a hook can transform into such playful and expressive pieces of art. Further expanding on this adorable theme, Lazymuse Productions showcased more enchanting jellyfish, this time reimagined as delightful ornaments, alongside a beautifully crafted crocheted conch shell. These pieces highlight the immense versatility and artistic potential of crochet, moving beyond traditional blankets to create truly unique and smile-inducing items for home decor or gifting.

Colorful Faux Antlers by The New Woodsman
A truly standout display featured an awesome assortment of colorful faux antlers from The New Woodsman. These weren’t your typical rustic hunting trophies; they were modern, artistic interpretations crafted from resin, available in a dazzling array of hues. Predictably, my Jersey wife, Sherry, was most enamored with the metallic gold ones, which unfortunately aren’t pictured here but were absolutely stunning in person. These faux antlers offer a chic, ethical, and vibrant alternative for adding a touch of nature-inspired decor with a contemporary twist to any living space, truly showcasing innovative design within the craft world.

Detailed Prints from Illegible Ink
The print of vegetables from Illegible Ink was truly charming, notable for its exceptional detail and intricate composition. One could easily stand there for hours, meticulously studying each delicate line and subtle shade, uncovering new nuances with every glance. The artist’s ability to render such ordinary subjects with extraordinary precision and beauty was truly impressive. Additionally, we recall a particularly funny meat-themed print that mirrored the same captivating detail and clever artistic vision, proving that even everyday items can be transformed into captivating works of art through skillful hands.

Thoughtful Jewelry by Lucky Accessories
The fair also showcased a wide variety of exquisite jewelry. Among these, a delicate peapod necklace from Lucky Accessories particularly caught Sherry’s eye. She mentally bookmarked it for a future day—specifically, when our family might grow to include more than one child. While the necklace was available with a single pea, she humorously reasoned that she’d rather wait and “beef up her pea quotient” before jumping the peapod gun. This thoughtful piece perfectly embodies the sentimentality often associated with handmade jewelry, offering a personal and symbolic connection to family and growth, making it an ideal heirloom for years to come.

Reconnecting with Familiar Artistic Faces
One of the true pleasures of attending events like Handmade Holiday is the opportunity to reconnect with artists whose work we’ve admired before. It strengthens the sense of community and allows us to witness their evolving creativity. We were thrilled to see some familiar faces showcasing their latest handmade endeavors, reminding us of the rich tapestry of talent that consistently enriches our local artistic scene.
Festive Creations from Love Elaine
We were delighted to encounter Love Elaine, an artist whose work we’ve long admired, and who previously contributed a beautiful fabric wreath for a giveaway back in May. Her booth was a festive wonderland, overflowing with charming Christmas fabric goods. While everything was lovely, what truly captured our attention was a particularly adorable kids’ apron. We instantly envisioned Clara wearing it, looking utterly cute and feeling like a professional chef while helping us bake holiday cookies. It’s these kinds of practical yet adorable handmade items that make perfect gifts, blending utility with a touch of personalized charm.

Quirky Companions from Phil Barbato
Another beloved giveaway alum we were excited to see was Phil Barbato. Phil is renowned for his uniquely funky ape stuffed animals, among other creative ventures. His designs possess a distinct character and charm that immediately draw you in. As we walked away from his captivating booth, Clara, ever observant, offered a sweet “buh-bye monkey!”, a testament to how memorable and engaging his creations are, even for the youngest of art enthusiasts. His work is a wonderful reminder of the playful and imaginative side of handmade artistry, offering truly unique companions for anyone.

Our New Gallery Wall: Integrating Handmade Art into Our Home
Interestingly, we had previously purchased a print from Phil Barbato earlier this summer during another vibrant Richmond art event, the First Friday Art Walk. However, it wasn’t until we returned home from Handmade Holiday, brimming with our new crafty treasures, that the perfect vision for its placement finally crystallized. We realized it would be the ideal centerpiece to hang alongside two of our recent Handmade Holiday finds. Please forgive the frames; they were simply what we had readily available, but they served their purpose in bringing this new collection to life.

This charming little frame collection now proudly adorns the short wall just outside Clara’s bedroom door, directly opposite the playroom entrance. Our initial thought was that Clara would delight in greeting and bidding goodnight to the sweet bunny print. However, to our amusement and slight surprise, her absolute favorite thing to do is point directly at the robot print and exclaim, with pure joy, “Color! Color!” Figures… it seems the vibrant allure of those robots truly speaks to her burgeoning artistic spirit. This small gallery wall has become a daily source of smiles and interaction, a constant reminder of the incredible talent within the handmade community and the personal joy it brings to our family.
