Welcome to our latest home transformation journey! Today, we’re diving into the exciting process of breathing new life into a pair of secondhand chairs, turning them from forgotten finds into vibrant statement pieces for our home office. These chairs, a fantastic $35 score we discovered here, are currently in mid-makeover. While we’re still eagerly waiting for the final coats of paint to dry and the new upholstery to be finished, we couldn’t resist sharing our progress and the detailed thought process behind this DIY adventure.
The Quest for the Perfect Hue: A Deep Dive into Color Selection
Transforming any piece of furniture begins with a vision, and for us, that vision started with color. John and I spent countless hours deliberating, holding up swatches, and imagining the chairs in our office space. This wasn’t just about picking a pretty color; it was about finding a shade that would perfectly complement our existing decor while injecting a fresh burst of personality. We meticulously explored a wide spectrum of options, each with its own set of considerations:
- Emerald Green: Initially, this rich jewel tone held a strong appeal, promising a sophisticated yet vibrant touch.
- Turquoise, Aqua, or Dark Teal: These shades offered a cohesive look, echoing elements already present in the room.
- Dark Gray or Light Gray: A classic, versatile choice that could blend seamlessly with the office’s walls.
- Plum: A bold, deep color that could add a touch of drama.
- Navy: Another timeless and elegant option, often associated with a refined aesthetic.
- White or Light Celery: Lighter, airier options that could brighten the space.
- Lime Green or Grellow: A more adventurous and cheerful direction, promising a unique visual pop.
Before we delve into the rigorous decision-making process, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane. Here’s a glimpse of the chairs in their original state within the office, offering a clear “before” perspective:

Eliminating Options: Why Certain Colors Didn’t Make the Cut
Our color debate wasn’t just theoretical; it involved constant visualization and critical analysis against the backdrop of our existing home decor. Over the past month, each option was scrutinised:
- Turquoise, Aqua, or Dark Teal: While beautiful, these vibrant blues were deemed too overwhelming. Our dining room, which opens directly into the office, features two prominent bright teal bookcases flanking the doorway. Introducing more teal would create a monotonous “everything’s-teal” effect, lacking visual interest and depth. We aimed for harmony, not absolute uniformity.
- Light or Dark Gray: Having recently painted the office walls in a sophisticated gray, we quickly abandoned the idea of gray chairs. While a gray-on-gray scheme can be chic, it felt a little too understated and, frankly, “blah” for the dynamic energy we wanted to inject into this space. We craved contrast and a more defined personality for the chairs.
- Navy: The original color of the chairs was a dark, somewhat nondescript shade. Navy, though elegant, felt too close to this existing darkness. We wanted a dramatic shift, a true lightening and brightening of the space, and navy would have maintained too much of the somber tone we were trying to move away from.
- White or Light Celery: These lighter options initially offered a promise of freshness. However, we worried they might play it too safe, veering into a “Palm Beach” aesthetic that didn’t quite align with our vision. Our goal was bold cheerfulness, not understated elegance, and these colors felt a little too timid for the statement we intended to make.
- Plum: Similar to navy, plum presented the challenge of being too dark. We anticipated it would create the same heavy, weighty presence as the original navy-ish color, rather than the lively, uplifting feel we were striving for.
The “Grellow” Revelation: A Stroke of Genius
With most options filtered out, we were left with a fascinating choice between emerald green and the more adventurous lime green or grellow. For a while, I championed emerald green, envisioning its sophisticated depth contrasting beautifully with the light grellow tones already present in our stencil work and on the adjoining kitchen walls. The idea was to create a harmonious yet distinct visual dialogue.
However, reality hit when we brought home countless emerald swatches. Holding them up, stepping back, and observing them under different lighting conditions, a undeniable truth emerged: they all looked… wrong. The cool, somewhat bluish undertones of emerald green clashed surprisingly with the warmer, golden greens in our kitchen and stencil. The desired synergy simply wasn’t there; instead, we perceived a subtle but persistent discord.
And then, the moment of clarity: the winner is… grellow! Was anyone truly surprised? Probably not. Sometimes, the answer is right in front of you, waiting to be embraced. We realized there was no point in fighting it. A super-saturated, bold grellow would not only fit perfectly but would also cleverly reference the lighter grellow of the kitchen walls and the soft grellow in the stencil, creating a cohesive visual narrative.
This vibrant choice was meticulously considered to play well with other nearby elements: the stunning indigo light fixture, the charming teal globe on the file cabinet, the impressive dark teal bookcases in the dining room, and the inviting green runner and curtains in the dining room. The key was to find a grellow that was distinctly bolder and more saturated than the existing soft tones, preventing the space from feeling bland or overly monochromatic. We wanted a “pop,” a fresh energy that would invigorate the entire area. Enter our trusty color muse, Sue the Napkin, making her dramatic entrance:

From Inspiration to Application: Finding the Perfect Paint
Sue the Napkin has a stellar track record for guiding our color decisions, so we trusted her implicitly. We carefully plucked a deep, greeny-yellow shade directly from her intricate pattern. This involved holding up countless paint swatches until we found the absolute closest match: Benjamin Moore’s Olive Tree. Taping that swatch to the chair and stepping back, we were instantly captivated. It was nothing short of magical; every element in the room seemed to fall into perfect harmony. The decision was made.
Our next hurdle was translating this perfect hue into spray paint, a necessity given the intricate woven details of the chairs that would be impractical to paint with a brush. The plan was to visit our local Benjamin Moore store, known for their custom spray paint mixing service (a fantastic option, but always call ahead to confirm your local store offers it!). Late last week, I called to verify their service, only to learn it was too late in the day for them to mix a batch before closing. A minor setback, but one that ultimately led to an unexpected discovery.
The following evening, a stroke of serendipity occurred. While browsing the aisles of Michael’s, we stumbled upon their spray paint section. And there it was: Krylon spray paint in “Ivy Leaf.” To our astonishment, it was nearly identical to the Benjamin Moore Olive Tree swatch I had tucked into my purse! Without hesitation, we purchased two cans at an incredibly reasonable $5.99 each. What a win! A subsequent call to Benjamin Moore confirmed our good fortune: custom spray paint would have required a minimum order of six cans, priced at $7-10 each. Michael’s truly came through for us, saving both time and money.

Preparation is Key: Laying the Foundation for a Flawless Finish
With our beloved spray paint in hand, the real work began. The first step was to carefully remove the seat cushions from each chair, which were secured by four screws on the underside. This ensured a clean, even finish without paint getting onto the fabric.

Next, thorough preparation was essential for optimal paint adhesion and durability. We meticulously wiped down every surface with a liquid deglosser. We highly recommend Next Liquid Deglosser by Crown, not only for its effectiveness in preparing surfaces but also because it’s non-flammable, biodegradable, and low-VOC. This step eliminates any grime, grease, or existing sheen, allowing the new paint to bond securely.
Typically, sanding is crucial for smoothing rough patches and ensuring an even finish. However, in this unique case, the chipped paint on our chairs had worn down in an unusually smooth manner, leaving no rough edges or bumps that required sanding. This saved us a significant amount of time and effort! Once cleaned and deglossed, the chairs were placed outside on cardboard, ready for the vital priming stage.

The Art of Spray Painting: Achieving a Professional Look
Priming is a non-negotiable step in furniture painting, as it creates a uniform base, enhances paint adhesion, and ensures the true color of your topcoat shines through. I applied a few thin, even coats of spray primer, always maintaining a distance of 8-10 inches from the surface and keeping my arm in constant motion to prevent drips or uneven buildup. After about 40 minutes, the primer was dry and ready for the next stage.

It was at this point that I thought to read the spray paint can’s instructions – a critical, albeit sometimes overlooked, step! The can advised applying the topcoat either within an hour of priming or waiting a full 24 hours. Impatience got the better of me, and I opted not to wait. I swiftly proceeded to apply the grellow topcoat, misting both chairs with approximately four super-thin, even coats until they reached their cheerful, grellow perfection. We captured photos of each thin coat to illustrate how the color gradually builds up from almost zero initial coverage to a rich, full finish, a testament to the power of layering.

Expert Tips for Successful Spray Painting
For anyone embarking on a spray painting project, here are some invaluable tips gathered from our experience:
- Invest in Quality: Skip the tempting but often disappointing $2 paints. Opt for quality options in the $6-7 range. Brands like Rustoleum often offer superior trigger spray nozzles that provide a thin, even application and prevent paint from getting all over your fingers, making for a much more pleasant and effective experience.
- Keep Moving: This is perhaps the golden rule of spray painting. Your arm should be in constant, fluid motion while spraying. Pausing in one spot, even for a second, almost guarantees drips and an uneven finish. Think of it as a dance: if you’re spraying, your arm better be swaying!
- Maintain Optimal Distance: For the best coverage and to avoid heavy spots or drips, keep the nozzle consistently 8-10 inches away from the surface you’re painting. This distance allows the paint to atomize properly, creating a fine mist.
- Aim for a Mist, Not a Flood: The goal is to apply a light, even mist, not a heavy, wet coating. Heavy coats are the primary cause of drips, sags, and prolonged drying times. Patience is key here.
- Layer Thin Coats: Always prioritize three thin, even coats over a single thick, drippy one. Thin layers dry faster, adhere better, and build up to a smoother, more durable finish. If you can still see some of the underlying surface after the first coat, that’s perfectly normal and desired.
- Prioritize Safety and Ventilation: Spray paint contains Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Always apply it outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, and wear a mask to protect your respiratory system. Allow the painted items to fully cure outside for as long as the can recommends (typically 24 hours, but we often double that for extra safety and off-gassing).
- Seal for Reduced Off-Gassing: To further limit off-gassing once you bring your freshly painted items indoors, consider applying two thin coats of Safecoat Acrylacq. This product is low-VOC and non-toxic, providing an extra layer of protection and peace of mind, especially for indoor furniture.
And just like that, with careful application and adherence to best practices, we were left with this cheerfully transformed chair:

Make that two of them! Lounging casually in the yard, drying and curing under the sun, already exuding their new personality.

A quick note on quantity: the entire process ultimately required three cans of spray paint, so a quick trip back to the store was necessary to grab one more. As for the seats, we had some leftover yardage from our delightful dining room curtain project – a perfect example of how thoughtful DIY can extend the life and utility of materials.

The Final Vision: Uniting Color and Fabric
Holding up the beautiful patterned fabric against the freshly painted grellow chairs brought an immense wave of satisfaction. All systems are indeed go; they complement each other wonderfully, creating a cohesive yet dynamic look. This fabric choice was particularly exciting because it initially had a different destiny.
Originally, I had intended to use this extra fabric to create custom Roman blinds for the office. Given how open the office is to the dining room – thanks to a giant double doorway flanked by built-in shelves – it seemed like a natural continuation. However, as we continued to dream about the vibrant grellow chairs, a concern arose: using the same fabric on both the windows and the chairs might lead to a “too matchy-matchy” aesthetic, diminishing the impact of both elements. Using it for the chair upholstery became the perfect compromise, allowing the grellow chairs to truly shine as statement pieces while bringing a subtle echo of the dining room’s design into the office.
This afternoon’s exciting project is the reupholstery of the seats. We’ll be sharing all those details, complete with stunning “after” pictures, in just a day or two – as soon as they’re dry enough to be fully assembled for their photoshoot. The transformation promises to be remarkable!
