Transforming a Tiny Nursery Closet on a Budget: Our DIY Organization Story
Every parent-to-be dreams of a perfectly organized nursery, a serene space for their little one. But what happens when that dream is met with a daunting reality: a tiny, uninspiring closet that seems to defy all attempts at order? That was precisely our challenge. Our nursery closet, a modest nook that couldn’t be expanded due to a formidable combination of ductwork on the left and the back of our living room fireplace on the right, was crying out for a serious upgrade. We were determined to transform this chaotic corner into a sweet, functional, and organized haven, all while adhering to a strict budget of under thirty dollars. Call us cheap, but we believe smart design doesn’t have to break the bank, especially when preparing for a new arrival.

The Vision: From Drab to Delightful on a Dime
Our journey began with a clear vision: creating a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing closet that maximized every inch of available space. The initial state was far from ideal; it was a dark, cramped space that seemed to swallow items rather than store them efficiently. The constant battle with the closet door, which perpetually banged against the main room door, made it even more frustrating to access. This hands-on project was born out of a necessity to create a more welcoming and efficient nursery, proving that even the most challenging spaces can be transformed with a little creativity and elbow grease.
A Splash of Color: Setting the Tone
The first step in our budget-friendly makeover was to infuse the closet with some personality and brightness. My wonderfully supportive (and surprisingly design-savvy) husband suggested painting the interior of the closet the same soft aqua color as the ceiling. This choice wasn’t just aesthetic; it was strategic. The calming aqua hue creates a sense of continuity and makes the small space feel lighter and more expansive. Since we had already made the practical decision to remove the door – a move that instantly improved accessibility and flow within the room – embracing a cheerful color became even more important to make the closet feel like an integrated part of the nursery. This simple painting step not only brightened the nook but also set a playful tone for the entire transformation. You can explore the full details of our nursery paint job, including the wall and ceiling colors, right here: Our Nursery Paint Job.

Essential Foundations: Rods, Shelves, and a Touch of Whimsy
With the fresh coat of aqua paint, the closet already felt more inviting. Next, we reinstalled the original clothing bar and shelf, giving them a new lease on life with a crisp semi-gloss white paint. This bright white not only contrasted beautifully with the aqua walls but also provided a clean, fresh backdrop for baby clothes and accessories. To add an instant touch of cuteness and softness, we then hung a little homemade curtain. This DIY addition immediately softened the utilitarian lines of the closet, making it feel more like a cozy corner rather than just a storage unit. The curtain also offers a subtle way to conceal clutter when needed, maintaining a serene atmosphere in the nursery. Learn how we crafted this charming addition in our DIY guide: Making the Nursery Curtain.

Ingenious Storage Solutions: Maximizing Every Inch
The foundation was set, but the real magic happened with the introduction of smart storage solutions. We added a second hanging bar to double our capacity for tiny outfits and carefully selected a variety of organizational systems designed to make the most of every vertical and horizontal surface. The transformation was dramatic; the closet now boasts dedicated spots for everything, demonstrating that thoughtful planning can conquer even the most challenging small spaces. Take a look at the incredible change:

Admittedly, we couldn’t resist the urge to fill the closet with every single item of baby clothing we had received so far. While many of these will eventually be folded and stored in our newly refinished dresser (thanks to our incredibly generous friends and family!), this initial “stuffing” helped us test the functionality and effectiveness of our new organizational systems. We wanted to ensure every solution worked perfectly for our little one’s ever-growing collection.

Custom Cubbies: The IKEA Shoe Organizer Hack
One of our proudest achievements in this makeover was creating custom hanging cubbies on either side of the top clothing bar. These weren’t custom-built from scratch, but rather a brilliant repurposing of IKEA shoe organizers. We were incredibly fortunate to acquire these for free; a friend, Kristin, was purging and thoughtfully passed two of them our way (a huge thank you to her and her “brilliant bungalow,” which you can check out here: Kristin’s Bungalow!). The only catch? With the newly installed second clothing bar, these full-length organizers were too long for our space.

So, demonstrating the true spirit of DIY and adaptation, we simply cut them down to the perfect size. This straightforward modification transformed them into perfectly proportioned cubbies that fit snugly within the narrow confines of our closet, without impeding the lower hanging bar. This simple yet effective hack allowed us to create specialized storage without any additional cost, proving that sometimes the best solutions are those you tailor yourself.

And now, they work like a charm! These customized cubbies are incredibly versatile, ready to house everything from tiny bibs and adorable stockings to an array of onesies, little undies, socks, and even burp cloths. While some of these smaller items will undoubtedly find their permanent home in our beautifully refinished dresser, it’s immensely satisfying to know that our closet offers not just ample space for hanging items but also dedicated, easily accessible cubby holes for smaller essentials. This layered approach to organization ensures that every type of baby item has its designated spot, making daily routines smoother and less stressful.

Since our dear friend Kristin generously provided us with two of these shoe organizers, we strategically placed one on each side of the top hanging bar. This thoughtful placement instantly doubled our stash space for future needs (after trimming a bit of length off the second one as well). Currently, that second organizer remains completely empty, a delightful testament to the fact that we’ve planned for growth. We’ve heard rumors that kids tend to accumulate “stuff” as they grow, so we’re confident these additional cubbies won’t stay vacant for long, ready to absorb the influx of toys, accessories, and clothes that are sure to come.

Harnessing Existing Resources: Top Shelf Storage
Looking at the picture above, you’ll also spot a charming little striped fabric storage box tucked away on the left side of the top shelf. This wasn’t a new purchase, but rather an item we already had around the house, seamlessly integrated into our new system. While it currently stands empty, its potential is boundless. We envision it corralling everything from small toys and board books to extra linens or even cozy blankets as the need arises. Its presence embodies our philosophy of repurposing and utilizing what we already own, minimizing waste and maximizing budget-friendliness.
On the right side of that same top shelf, as shown in the photo below, we’ve neatly folded four of the beautiful blankets we’ve already received. Again, our friends and relatives have been incredibly kind and generous! Folding them in an accessible way ensures they are easy to grab at a moment’s notice, whether for snuggles, playtime, or quick changes. This simple arrangement showcases how even basic folding techniques can contribute to a highly organized and efficient storage system.

The Lower Level: Double Hanging and Tiered Storage
Moving to the bottom portion of the closet, we introduced that essential second hanging bar (sourced affordably from Home Depot, by the way). This immediately doubled our hanging capacity, a crucial feature for a baby’s wardrobe that often consists of numerous tiny outfits. Below this bar, we placed a compact, double-tiered shoe rack from Target. While its future purpose will undoubtedly be to store Baby P’s adorable shoes when she gets bigger, it currently serves a multifaceted role. It’s the perfect spot to store neatly rolled crib sheets and changing table covers, along with even more blankets – ensuring our “beanette” will absolutely never be cold!

Repurposed Bins: A Pop of Color and Potential
You’ll also notice two vibrant blue fabric boxes nestled on top of the shoe rack. These, too, are cherished items I’ve owned for years, originally from Crate & Barrel back in my NYC days. One used to house my modest sewing supplies (a few rarely-used spools of thread and an abundance of iron-on Heat & Bond tape), while the other kept iPod cords and various electronics neatly organized. It was surprisingly easy to find alternative storage for those items because the punchy turquoise color of these boxes fit so perfectly with the rest of the nursery’s color scheme. So, now they stand empty, awaiting their next purpose. We absolutely love that they can effortlessly transition to storing toys, crayons, or even LEGOs down the line. This flexibility embodies our belief that empty bins and boxes truly signify room to grow, adapting with our child’s evolving needs. For those interested, we actually have a third matching box, as featured in this post about tackling closet clutter.
Future-Proofing: Maximizing the Floor Space
Speaking of room to grow, we’re thrilled that there’s still a small slice of space under the shoe rack on the floor. This unused area is reserved for future storage needs, whether it’s another set of bins and baskets for toys or even a designated spot for shoes and boots as our little one grows. It’s about planning ahead and ensuring the closet remains functional and adaptable for years to come – you know, for when the bean’s tiny feet actually touch the floor!

Budget Breakdown: Proof That DIY Pays Off
So, there you have it: our complete nursery closet overhaul! And true to our promise, we accomplished it all on a shoestring budget (pun somewhat intended after all that shoe talk!). Here’s a transparent breakdown of our minimal expenses:
- White tiered shoe rack on floor (from Target): $12.99
- Second hanging bar (from Home Depot): $5.37
- Blue boxes: already owned (repurposed from previous use)
- Two hanging shoe organizers (from Ikea): free (a generous gift from a friend)
- A plethora of baby clothes, blankets, and bibs: courtesy of our sweet friends and family (priceless!)
- GRAND TOTAL: $18.36
Not bad at all, right? Especially considering how bleak and disorganized the closet looked when we started. Even if we had needed to purchase those ingenious hanging shoe organizers, they retail for a mere $6.99 each at Ikea. Factoring in the cost of two, our total would still have come in at an incredibly reasonable $32.34. It’s important to note that this budget doesn’t include the price of the curtain (which we factored into this curtain-making post) or the paint (which was essentially free as it was leftover from painting the nursery ceiling). This closet, though still a sliver of space, now functions like a dream. Combined with our big double dresser and a few other clever storage options we’ll be adding to the room, we’re absolutely confident that our baby girl will have an abundance of organized places to stash all her essentials. This project truly showcases that thoughtful design and a DIY approach can yield remarkable results, even with the tightest of budgets.
