Now that the birthday festivities have joyfully concluded, I’m thrilled to share all the delightful details of this year’s celebration. Turning 29 felt wonderfully sweet and remarkably similar to recent birthdays, yet it was uniquely memorable, encompassing everything from a hilariously accidental foot massage (yes, John mistook shaving cream for lotion!) to our precious Clara taking her very first crawls. It was an absolutely incredible moment that caught us completely by surprise!
For months, Clara had been quite content scooting around on her bottom, and had even recently started pulling herself up, leading everyone, including our pediatrician, to believe she might bypass crawling entirely and go straight to walking. But, true to her adventurous spirit, she decided to give crawling a go, just for kicks, and much to our utter delight, we even managed to capture the heartwarming milestone on video. Witnessing her tiny knees and hands propel her forward for the first time was truly a gift beyond measure, a moment etched forever in our family’s history.
And yes, I apologize if it seems like I’m constantly talking about her, but Clara truly is kind of awesome. Her newfound mobility and infectious giggles are undeniably the best birthday present anyone could ask for. Every day with her brings new wonders and fresh perspectives.
Sunny Strolls and Surprising Discoveries
The weather on Saturday was absolutely perfect, hovering around a glorious 70 degrees and bathed in sunshine. This felt particularly amusing, as I distinctly remember my birthdays up north often being accompanied by snow. Capitalizing on the beautiful day, we embarked on a wonderfully long walk through one of our most cherished neighborhoods, pushing Clara in her stroller and with Burger, our loyal canine companion, happily trotting alongside. It was a perfect opportunity to soak in the vibrant atmosphere and admire the stunning architecture, including the gorgeous house captured behind me in one of our photos.

During our scenic riverside stroll, we even spotted several turtles basking in the sun, a delightful sight that captivated Clara. She was utterly enchanted by the slow-moving creatures, pointing and cooing with pure joy. Burger, on the other hand, seemed rather ambivalent, probably more interested in sniffing out new scents than observing reptiles. These simple moments of nature exploration are what make our family walks so special and memorable.

Stepping Up My Game: A Reebok EasyTone Review
Throughout our walk, I was proudly sporting my brand new Reebok EasyTone sneakers, a thoughtful birthday gift from my husband, John, specifically designed for bun and thigh toning. Oh yes, I felt incredibly stylish and motivated to try them out! I had been subtly (and not-so-subtly) hinting about wanting these for a while, and John, ever the good sport, humored my request.
My initial three-mile trek in the Reeboks was surprisingly comfortable. I braced myself for immediate muscle soreness, expecting them to “kill” me, but I felt absolutely fine both during and immediately after the walk. I even started to wonder if they were all hype. However, the next day, after repeating a similar three-mile route, my skepticism vanished. I suddenly found myself in dire need of a serious break, feeling the distinct burn in my glutes and legs that the shoes promised. So, yes, the Reebok EasyTones do indeed deliver on their toning claims, albeit with a delayed but definite impact. My initial thought that they were just clever marketing was quickly overshadowed by their undeniable effectiveness – my Reeboks certainly had the last laugh!
A Culinary Delight and The Gift of Perspective
What else made this birthday special? We indulged in a wonderful sushi dinner at our favorite local spot. It’s no secret that we have a real “thing” for sushi, and it felt like the perfect relaxed yet special way to celebrate. The delicate flavors and fresh ingredients always make for a memorable meal, and this evening was no exception. It’s these simple pleasures, shared with loved ones, that truly enrich life’s special occasions.

Beyond the toning Reeboks, John and the family showered me with some incredibly thoughtful and fun gifts. John also surprised me with an awesome book titled “Love Life,” which he discovered at a charming local gift store called Mongrel. What immediately struck me was its perfectly serene greeny-yellow cover, a shade I absolutely adore. While one should never judge a book by its cover, it certainly doesn’t hurt when the exterior is as appealing as the insightful content within.
We’ve often spoken about how we grapple with finding balance in our lives, especially with the internet being a 24/7 presence, making it challenging to switch off and truly unplug. This book is an absolute treasure trove, packed with couldn’t-be-more-true reminders that resonate deeply with our current phase of life:
- “The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won’t wait while you finish the work.” – Pat Clifford
- “If you can spend a perfectly useless afternoon in a perfectly useless manner, you have learned how to live” – Lin Yutang
- “I think the most significant work we ever do, in the whole world, in our whole life, is done within the four walls of our own home.” – Stephen R. Covey
- “It is a great art to saunter.” – Henry David Thoreau
- “I haven’t a clue how my story will end, but that’s all right. When you set out on a journey and night covers the road, that’s when you discover the stars.” -Nancy Willard
These quotes serve as gentle nudges to prioritize what truly matters, to embrace the present, and to find joy in the journey, not just the destination. It’s a timely reminder to savor the small, precious moments.
Home Decor Dreams and Thoughtful Touches
Enough of the philosophical musings for a moment, although it’s true that birthdays often prompt us to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed – perhaps it’s the inevitable “I’m aging” realization. We even joked that one day we’ll have to change our blog name to Middle Aged House Love! Somehow, it just doesn’t have the same charming ring to it. But now, for some truly exciting news: behold the home-related treasures I received from John’s wonderful sisters!
We’ve found that creating “wish lists” for gifting works beautifully; it simplifies the process for the giver and guarantees the receiver gets something they truly desire. So, I spent some delightful time browsing the world wide web in search of a few prints to expand our soon-to-be-magnificent frame gallery in the hallway. I discovered these absolute beauties that immediately captured my heart:

This charming print, a lovely ode to our shared love for a good road trip, was a fantastic find from this Etsy shop, gifted by John’s sister, Katie. And John, always one to go for extra credit, truly outdid himself. I genuinely thought the Reeboks would be the extent of my birthday haul, but he also surprised me with this adorable bee print. We have a special affinity for bees, so this thoughtful addition was incredibly sweet and perfect for our collection.

I absolutely cannot wait to arrange all these wonderful new prints among our cherished family pictures and keepsakes in the hallway gallery wall. The vision is slowly coming together, and I’m eager to finally put those Ikea frames, currently gathering dust in the kitchen corner, to good use. Patience is a virtue, and someday soon, our hallway will be a vibrant testament to our family’s journey and passions. Oh, and adding to the shower of thoughtful gifts, my sweet friend Heather sent me these utterly stunning lilies, completely out of the blue. Her gesture brightened my week immensely!

I adore them beyond words, and what makes them even more special is that she specifically chose the vibrant lime green vase, knowing how much I would absolutely flip for it. Affirmative, Heather! I certainly went crazy, oohing and aaahing over them, and I still find myself walking in from another room just to “visit” my beautiful bouquet every hour or so. It’s a constant source of joy and a reminder of her wonderful friendship.
Embracing Life’s Little Joys
Overall, my 29th birthday was truly awesome, and life feels incredibly good right now. Who knows where I’ll be when I turn 30, let alone 35? The future is a beautifully unfolding mystery. For now, I’m simply trying to make every moment count, striving to live fully without getting so caught up in the daily grind that I forget to savor the precious, little things – like Clara’s adorable baby snorts and Burger’s affectionate puppy sniffs. Is it possible I’m still a bit hormonal from birthing Clara over ten months ago? Perhaps. Sorry if this post leans a little too personal or sappy; I guess that’s just me these days, embracing the beautiful chaos and profound love that defines our family life.
Pssssst – For anyone curious about how we organize Clara’s myriad of toys or who has inquired about that large brown basket next to our sectional, do check out our dedicated BabyCenter post.
