Transform Your Old Side Tables into Custom Padded Ottomans: A Budget-Friendly DIY Guide
Have you ever looked at a piece of furniture in your home and envisioned its potential for a completely new life? We certainly have! For over a year, this particular DIY transformation lived purely in our imaginations, but we’re thrilled to finally share the reality of bringing it to life. Because, as it turns out, imagining a project doesn’t quite get it onto the blog! We’re about to unveil how we took two well-loved, five-year-old side tables from Target – treasures from our very first house – and reimagined them into much-needed padded ottomans for the foot of our bed. These aren’t just any ottomans; they’re our personalized solution, serving as chic doggy steps for our furry friend, Burger, who appreciates a little boost onto our extra-tall bed.

The Vision: Repurposing Side Tables for Style and Function
Before diving into the nitty-gritty of tools and fabric, the first crucial step in any successful DIY project is visualization. We placed our existing side tables at the foot of the bed to gauge their presence and ensure they would complement the space. The immediate impression was overwhelmingly positive!

The original color of the table legs harmonized beautifully with our inherited dresser from John’s parents, creating a cohesive look. Furthermore, we’re undeniable enthusiasts of the classic X-base design – its timeless elegance and sturdy appeal make it a versatile foundation for various furniture pieces. While the tables initially felt a tad disconnected from the area rug, we knew a thoughtful addition could bridge that gap. Our plan was simple yet transformative: introduce a thick, charcoal-colored fabric atop a plush foam cushion. This strategic choice, we believed, would not only provide comfort but also anchor the ottomans to the room’s aesthetic, tying them seamlessly with the rug and existing decor. Just scroll back up to the first image, and you’ll instantly see the significant impact that gray cushion makes!
DIY Ottoman Transformation: A Step-by-Step Guide
Now, let’s get into the exciting part – the actual process of turning these unassuming side tables into stylish, functional ottomans. This upcycling project is surprisingly straightforward and incredibly rewarding.
Step 1: Carefully Separating the Tabletop from its Base
Our first task involved detaching the tabletop from its X-based legs. While it might sound a bit drastic, considering our goal was to completely reupholster the tops and transform them into benches, this step was essential. Unlike some tables where tops simply unscrew, ours were stubbornly attached with a combination of nails and glue. This called for a more robust approach. We opted to use a flat cutting attachment from our Dremel Multi-Max oscillating tool. This specialized tool allowed us to cleanly sever the tabletop from the leg structure without damaging the base. For those undertaking a similar project, remember to always prioritize safety: wear appropriate eye protection and gloves. If you don’t have a Dremel, a fine-tooth hand saw or a reciprocating saw with a suitable blade could also work, depending on the thickness and material of your tabletop. This phase was certainly a memorable one, perhaps accompanied by a lively rendition of The Offspring’s “Keep ‘Em Separated” playing in the background – a fitting anthem for our industrious endeavor!

Step 2: Crafting Custom Foam Cushions
With the tabletops now liberated, it was time to introduce the element of comfort: the foam cushions. We sourced 1-inch thick foam from JoAnn Fabrics, and a handy 50% off coupon meant we secured enough material for both tables for an incredibly budget-friendly price of just $9. When selecting foam, consider the intended use of your ottoman; 1-inch foam is perfect for a firm, yet comfortable, surface for footrests or occasional seating. For a more plush feel, you might opt for a thicker foam or even layer two pieces. To ensure a perfect fit, I simply placed each tabletop onto the foam, traced its outline precisely with a Sharpie, and then carefully cut along the traced line using a pair of sharp, regular scissors. A utility knife can also be effective for thicker foam, just be sure to use a cutting mat underneath to protect your work surface.

Step 3: Securely Attaching Foam to the Table Tops
Once the foam pieces were cut to size, the next step was to adhere them firmly to the tabletops. For this, we used spray adhesive from our craft drawer. It’s important to note that spray adhesives can be quite potent, so I highly recommend applying it outdoors or in a very well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes and to prevent any sticky residue from settling on your floors or furniture. I sprayed the back of each foam square evenly, ensuring full coverage for a strong bond. After a moment for the adhesive to become tacky (check the product instructions for specific drying times), I carefully positioned each foam piece onto its respective tabletop, pressing down firmly from the center outwards to eliminate any air bubbles and ensure a smooth, secure attachment. This creates a solid foundation for the upholstery.

Step 4: Upholstering for a Professional Finish
Now for the part that truly transforms the tables: the upholstery! We found a yard of beautiful dark charcoal corduroy fabric at U-Fab for just $15. Corduroy is an excellent choice for ottomans due to its durability, rich texture, and ability to add a sophisticated touch. Other suitable fabrics include velvet, linen blends, or even outdoor fabrics if you anticipate heavy use. To prepare the fabric, I cut squares for each tabletop, ensuring they were approximately 4 inches wider than the tabletop on all sides. This extra allowance is crucial, as it provides enough material to wrap around both the foam and the wood sides, allowing for a neat and secure stapling on the underside of the tabletop.

The key to professional-looking upholstery is maintaining even tension. I started by pulling the fabric taut and securing it with just a few staples – about three on each edge of the tabletop’s underside. This “pre-stapling” allows you to flip the piece over, check for proper tension, ensure the fabric is centered (especially important with patterned or subtly lined fabrics like our corduroy), and make any necessary adjustments before committing. Once satisfied with the placement and tautness, I went “crazy” (in a good way!) with the staple gun, adding staples every inch or so around the perimeter to firmly hold the fabric in place, as demonstrated in the image below:

Managing the corners can often be the trickiest part of upholstery, but with a simple technique, you can achieve a clean, tailored finish. Think of it like wrapping a present: I carefully folded the fabric into neat triangles. One small triangle neatly overlaps another, creating a crisp, folded edge that looks polished and professional. This method ensures there’s no bulky excess fabric and provides a smooth transition around the corners.

Step 5: Refining and Preparing the Ottoman Legs
After the upholstery was complete, our attention turned back to the X-based legs. Since we had cut the tabletops directly off, some edges of the legs were left a bit sharp or uneven. To ensure safety and a smooth finish, we carefully sanded down any pointy or rough spots. This not only makes the ottomans safer but also prepares the surface for any necessary touch-ups. For the areas where sanding exposed raw wood, we used a regular brown magic marker to color them, allowing the repaired spots to blend seamlessly with the original finish. For a more durable or extensive repair, you might consider using wood stain pens or even lightly sanding and re-staining the entire leg structure if you desire a completely refreshed look.

Step 6: Reattaching the Upholstered Tops for Stability
The final structural step was to securely reattach the newly upholstered tops to their prepared X-bases. For a strong and lasting connection, we pre-drilled very small pilot holes at an angle. Drilling pilot holes is crucial, as it prevents the wood from splitting when nails (or screws) are driven in. We strategically angled these holes to ensure the nails would go directly through the leg structure and firmly into the wooden tabletop from underneath. We used two 2-inch nails for each leg, totaling eight nails per ottoman. This provided ample security, creating a wonderfully sturdy result. For heavier tables or if you anticipate more rigorous use, small screws might offer even greater holding power. However, with our lightweight tables, nails were a subtle and effective choice, avoiding the potentially more noticeable heads of screws given the leg configuration.

The Amazing Transformation: Budget, Time, and Results!
And just like that – boom, done! The transformation was complete, and the results exceeded our expectations. The total cost for this entire project? Less than $12 per ottoman! This incredibly budget-friendly price point truly highlights the power of DIY and upcycling. In terms of time, the whole process took around two hours. I’ll admit, some of that time was spent pausing to unravel the dramatic storylines of “NY Housewives” – a delightful, albeit distracting, companion to any home improvement project!

These beautiful DIY padded ottomans perfectly fulfill our primary objective: providing easy access for Burger to hop onto our tall bed. But their functionality extends far beyond just pet accessibility. The thoughtful choice of colors and materials means they are incredibly versatile. Should our needs or decor preferences ever change, we could easily “scooch” them into another room or spot in the house – perhaps as extra seating in a living room, a convenient surface in a hallway, or even as decorative accents in a guest bedroom. We absolutely adore flexible furniture pieces that can adapt to evolving spaces and styles. For a little perspective, here’s a peek at what occupied that space before: an old, somewhat heavy and clunky leftover storage bench from our first house. The new ottomans offer a much lighter, more refined aesthetic, opening up the room and adding a touch of modern elegance.

Regarding the structural integrity of our “construction,” we’re happy to report that our tables are inherently lightweight, so the combination of foam, fabric, and nails has proven more than sufficient. Burger, our chief quality control officer, has hopped on and off countless times, and even our little one has provided some excellent (if enthusiastic) stress testing, and they’ve held up beautifully. However, if you’re working with heavier tables, it’s always a good idea to consider using small screws instead of nails for an extra layer of security. In our case, the specific configuration of our X-based legs made us concerned that visible screw heads would detract from the aesthetic. We prioritized a subtle finish, and the small-headed nails offered just that without compromising stability for our particular project.

And yes, for anyone wondering, I’ve personally sat on each of them, and rest assured, they didn’t spontaneously combust into kindling! They are surprisingly sturdy and perfectly capable of handling casual perching. While we have a designated chair in the corner for extended sitting, these ottomans are more than adequate for Burger’s needs, and, if we’re being honest, for holding the occasional pile of clean (or not-so-clean) clothes. Functionality meets style – that’s a DIY win in our book!
