Maximizing Every Inch: Designing a Functional & Fun Small Kids’ Bedroom

Designing a child’s bedroom can be an exciting challenge, especially when faced with a “cozy” footprint – or, let’s be honest, a downright small room. The initial thought might be to compromise, to simply make do with less. However, with thoughtful planning, strategic DIY solutions, and a dash of creativity, even the most compact spaces can become a haven of functionality, comfort, and boundless imagination. Our goal for our son’s bedroom was ambitious: to integrate every essential and a few “nice-to-haves” into a space that truly felt his own, without ever feeling cramped.

We embarked on this project with a clear vision, listing all the elements we hoped to include in our son’s admittedly small room:

• A comfortable bed for restful sleep.
• Ample clothing storage that’s easy for him to use.
• Open shelving for books and frequently played-with toys.
• Concealed storage to hide away papers, games, and other bits and bobs.
• An added bonus: a cozy, inviting lounge area perfect for reading, playing with his sister, or hosting a friend.
• And a special request from him: his very own desk for drawing, homework, and indulging in his current magnet obsession.

Many might have dismissed the idea of a desk in such a tiny room, but we were determined to make it work. Our solution was to custom-build a desk directly adjacent to the bed, cleverly designing it to also serve as a nightstand. This innovative approach proved to be a game-changer, allowing us to successfully incorporate every item from our wish list. Indeed, this compact room now boasts a built-in bookshelf, a versatile desk (that seamlessly functions as a nightstand), a large, inviting daybed that our children adore for lounging, alongside generous clothing and toy storage, featuring a mix of both open and discreet solutions throughout the space.

The Transformation Journey: From Small Box to Functional Haven

This room’s evolution has been a journey, one that we’re delighted to share. We completed many of these custom projects, including the closet shelves, over a year ago in January 2021. The enduring success and continued functionality of these solutions speak volumes about their design and construction. Living with these changes for an entire year has only solidified our satisfaction; they not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also perform exceptionally well in daily use.

Given the modest dimensions of this bedroom, intentionality was paramount in fitting everything in. Our children have always gravitated towards cozy spaces, much like the small bunk room in our beach house. This assurance meant we weren’t concerned about our son’s appreciation for his compact new room; indeed, both kids spend significantly more time here than in our daughter’s larger room. However, maximizing functionality in a small room often demands difficult choices. We initially braced ourselves for compromises, expecting to store certain items outside the room.

Ultimately, a few simple DIY projects allowed us to extract incredible functionality from this room. Checking off every item on our list, including the “nice-to-haves,” has been incredibly rewarding. This space has truly come a long way. Clever Closet Configuration: Custom Shelves for Easy Organization

The closet presented another key opportunity for maximizing space. We extensively debated various options, from adding a bookshelf or even a small desk inside, ultimately concluding that optimizing it for clothing storage offered the best long-term functionality. This decision meant retaining maximum flexibility; a hanging bar could easily be installed later if needed, and a door could always be re-attached (though its absence currently enhances functionality by eliminating conflict with the main bedroom door).

Once dedicated to clothing, we explored everything from a tallboy dresser to elaborate Elfa pull-out systems. We eventually settled on a simple yet effective solution: custom-built shelves paired with large fabric baskets. This setup is incredibly user-friendly, highly adaptable, and a system our son was already familiar with for his clothes. The success of this method was partly inspired by our previous experience:

Our children successfully stored their clothes, pajamas, and swimsuits in baskets on shelves at the pink house all summer while sharing a tiny bunk room. This earlier experience, coupled with a year of using the current setup, means our son genuinely appreciates its simplicity. He independently puts away his freshly laundered clothes, and the open nature of the baskets makes it easy for him to spot when he’s running low on socks or swimsuits, prompting us to do laundry. Unlike deep drawers, nothing truly gets lost in these baskets, promoting better organization.

This flexible approach ensures the closet remains functional for his current needs. Does this mean we’ll never add a door, a hanging bar, or a built-in dresser in the future? Not at all. We believe in adapting spaces to evolving life stages. It will be interesting to see what adjustments become necessary as he grows older and acquires clothes that require hanging (currently, his hanging clothes count is zero). Fun fact: this closet actually used to have a hanging bar, but it was filled with our clothes for the first ten months we lived here because our own room lacked a closet. We’re incredibly relieved we rectified that situation!

DIY Closet Shelves: A Step-by-Step Guide

Building these simple yet sturdy closet shelves followed a method we perfected when creating our built-in pantry in the pink house. You can find a comprehensive step-by-step tutorial here. In essence, the process involves securely nailing and screwing 1×2-inch pine brace pieces (we opted for pre-primed for easier painting, sourced from Home Depot) to the sides and back of the closet, ensuring they are perfectly level. These braces then provide robust support for MDF shelves, which are laid on top and fastened into place.

To give the shelves a more substantial, chunkier appearance, we added another 1×2-inch board along the front edge of each shelf. Integrated Storage & Design: Bookshelves, Brass Accents, and Hidden Compartments

The built-in bookshelf, installed back in 2020, continues to be a cornerstone of the room’s design, harmonizing beautifully with the vibrant colorful planked wood wall. A more recent addition, this elegant brass shelf, was thoughtfully positioned above the bookcase. This not only introduces vertical interest to the extra-tall vaulted wall but also draws the eye upwards, making the most of the room’s unique architecture.

The built-in bookshelf accommodates a vast collection of books, while two cloth baskets brim with Pokémon cards and other small toys. Furthermore, three desk drawers and numerous additional baskets under the bed cleverly conceal more toys, games, and, yes, more rocks. Every item our son desires in his room has a dedicated storage spot, keeping clutter at bay.

And yes, our son’s delightful inscription of “Florida and Me” on his little blue-green letterboard never fails to bring a smile. This close-up view better showcases that brass shelf we installed. We particularly appreciate its rounded edges and the serendipitous fact that its width perfectly aligns with the wood slats, allowing us to seamlessly integrate it into the accent wall. Small details can make a big difference!

One of the true joys of this room’s layout is the effortless accessibility it offers. Grabbing a book to read or a basket of cards to play with from the comfort of the bed is incredibly easy. Sometimes, smaller spaces inherently foster greater efficiency, placing everything you need right at your fingertips.

Multifunctional Furniture: The Built-in Desk & Daybed

Swinging our focus to the opposite side of the room reveals the custom-built floating desk, designed to perfectly fit the space. By attaching one side to the bed frame and the other to the wall, we achieved a lighter, less cluttered feel. The genius of this design lies in its dual function: the desk seamlessly extends to serve as our son’s nightstand, providing a convenient spot for his sound machine, fan, and a coaster for his nightly glass of water.

Another pivotal decision was pushing the bed against the wall and crafting two upholstered panels – one for the side and one for the back. This created an inviting, lounge-like daybed aesthetic that both our children, and their friends, absolutely adore. The sofa-like feel makes it a popular hangout spot. Completing the look, a simple white quilt and an array of comfortable pillows, like these and these, added the final touches of coziness. Our son even has a special ritual for nestling himself among them and his stuffed animals each night!

Building the Floating Desk

The desk itself is constructed from MDF, utilizing the same reliable pantry shelf-building method for support. We installed 1×2-inch boards along the back and left side walls, upon which the MDF desktop securely rests. For the right side, we used carefully cut pieces of MDF to create a custom support that “hugs” the bed, resting atop the bed rail. These pieces are discreetly secured from underneath the bed, ensuring a stable and seamless look without visible screws. The clever design integrates the desk as a true extension of the sleeping area, enhancing both form and function.

Adding the three-drawer cabinet beneath the desk creates even more valuable concealed storage. This cabinet efficiently hides away items like a Rainbow Loom, an Aquabeads kit, his new Christmas microscope, and a stack of papers and notebooks essential for his desk activities. Beyond the Obvious: Under-Bed & Hidden Storage Solutions

One of the best features of our son’s room is the abundance of under-bed storage. Various baskets hold an assortment of toys, games, and stuffed animals. These can be tucked deep enough to maintain a clutter-free appearance, as demonstrated by their absence in the photo below.

Yet, they remain easily accessible, sliding forward effortlessly whenever something needs to be retrieved for play, as seen with the basket peeking out from under the bed in the image below. Initially, we purchased this bed specifically for its two large, integrated wooden drawers, which seemed like a smart storage solution. However, after living with them for a while, we discovered that smaller, more flexible cloth baskets that could slide in and out were far more practical than having to maneuver two heavier drawers every time our son wanted an item. Plus, individual baskets are better suited for specific items he collects, like collectible cards and, you guessed it, more rocks. It’s a classic case of live and learn!

We are incredibly thrilled with how this room has evolved, not only for our son but for our entire family. It’s no exaggeration to say that if we’re looking for the kids, nine times out of ten, they’re either playing outside on the swings or happily hanging out together in our son’s room (often listening to the Encanto soundtrack on repeat – we don’t talk about Bruno-no-no… but we love to talk about storage!).

This panel pops open with a gentle press in the right corner. Currently, it houses spare picture frames, as our son doesn’t yet require additional storage. However, as he grows, this adaptable space can easily be repurposed for whatever he needs. We could even add a small handle to make access even more convenient whenever he desires.
