How to Build and Paint a Pedestal Table: Step-by-Step Guide

We’re excited to share a simple but satisfying furniture makeover — a thrifted game table transformed into a sunny sunroom dining table. Two years ago we found an old, wobbly game table at a thrift store for twenty dollars. The square top was scruffy and unappealing, but the chunky wooden pedestal underneath showed promise. For a time we gave it a larger square top and painted it black so it could serve as a dining table, but when we later moved the dining area, it was replaced and spent some time tucked away in the garage.

As spring arrived and the idea of dinners outdoors without bugs sounded appealing, we realized that a sunroom would give us that exact solution. We bought an affordable round tabletop at Lowe’s for forty dollars and attached it to the trusty pedestal. The result was an instant fit for our cozy dining nook.

To finish the table we primed it with an oil-based primer, applied two coats of white semi-gloss paint, and sealed it with several light coats of water-based polyurethane so it would withstand food and drink. The makeover felt practical and economical — we already had four mid-century–inspired chairs in the garage that were perfect for recycling. Two of those chairs now accompany the table in the sunroom. They were originally a blonde wood tone, and we painted them to coordinate with the refreshed table.

Below is a wider view so you can see how the table fits into the overall room — it feels bright, casual, and perfectly suited for relaxed meals and morning coffee in a bug-free spot.
