Moving Into Our Second Home: First Day Highlights and Tips

We’re a little behind schedule since we didn’t have internet at home until late yesterday, but here’s a look at how things stood on Tuesday — our first full day in the house — with boxes piled in every room. Goodbye to the clean, blank slate. Hello chaos. Nothing is permanently placed yet; we just dropped furniture and boxes around the rooms and will live with things a bit before deciding on final placement.

To rewind for a moment: the last time we moved we went from NYC to Richmond in a minivan. (Technically we moved once more three months later from our apartment into our first house using a small trailer borrowed from a friend.) The point is, we didn’t have much experience moving with a lot of boxes. I won’t sugarcoat it — moving is rough. But we’re slowly making progress and starting to regain order. For instance, we know where our socks and underwear are again. And we’ve showered!

We expect to be mostly unpacked by tomorrow, though we’ve been breaking for photo-taking, Clara-tending, address changes, and answering comments between unloading sessions. After that we’ll jump into projects like painting, hanging, removing, replacing, planning furniture layouts, and choosing window treatments. Which project we tackle first will depend a lot on mood and what supplies we have on hand. For big projects we save up and plan carefully, but for small changes we prefer a “live with it first” approach. That way we avoid making dramatic decisions we might regret. We hang frames, test them, move them if needed. We pick paint colors and furniture layouts, then adjust as we go. We’ll post photos and details as progress happens.

Below are the messy, just-moved-in photos and notes for each space.

Future dining room:

Future office:

Kitchen:

Future living room (furniture won’t necessarily stay in this configuration; it’s just where we dropped it for the moment):

Hall bath (amid a diaper sprayer installation — more on that in a future post):

Clara’s room (we prioritized rebuilding the crib and getting the essentials in so she could adjust quickly, which seems to be working so far):

Future playroom/kids room (we had to disassemble the daybed to get it down the hall):

The master bedroom (our old bed frame stayed with the previous house, so we’re sleeping on the floor until we build or buy a new frame — who knows where we’ll end up):

The master sink/bath (we need to raise that tension rod to accommodate our extra-long curtain — soon):

No idea what Burger was doing in that picture. Maybe he’s developing an interest in home details like hardwood floors and molding. Anyway, here’s the sunroom:

And the laundry/mudroom:

We also have a separate entry basement (this time it’s under our bedroom instead of the sunroom). That’ll be great for storing tools, bikes, the lawnmower, seasonal decorations, baby gear, maternity clothes, and other overflow items.

So that’s our house tour for now. We can’t wait to unpack more and share photos as each room takes shape and projects begin to unfold. Off to unpack more boxes…

Psst — here’s a floor plan to help make sense of the layout (we swapped Clara’s room and the playroom because the smallest room works well as a nursery).

Pssst #2 — we announced the winners of this week’s giveaway. Check the original post to see if it’s you.
