Blue and White Kitchen Renovation: DIY Remodel Ideas and Tips

It’s no surprise we’re feeling inspired to tackle kitchen makeovers—honestly, we’re always up for one. Erin and Zach’s thoughtful DIY remodel of their 1951 kitchen feels especially familiar and motivating, since we’ve just begun our own kitchen transformation. Here’s their note about the project:

We wanted to share the redo of our 1951 kitchen (take note of the sweet before lamp and the heavy-duty ceiling beam disappearing act).

When we removed the old laminate flooring and the plywood underneath, we were thrilled to find the original wood floors beneath—though they were damaged in places. We tracked down matching red oak pieces and patched the missing and worn sections, restoring the floor to blend with the original boards.

For the breakfast bar, we made a smart, budget-friendly decision: we purchased two premade cabinets from Home Depot and placed them side by side. To create a seamless look, we filled one cabinet opening with wood panels so the units read as a single built-in piece.

We also kept and refinished all of the existing cabinetry, updating only the hardware. Painting that many cabinet doors took patience and required three coats to get a smooth, durable finish. The new blue color in the kitchen is Behr Primer + Paint in Clear Pond, Eggshell—an understated, modern shade that ties the space together.

Thanks so much for checking out our kitchen. We love it!! ~ Erin & Zach

We love it too. Congratulations to Erin and Zach on a beautifully executed renovation—proof that careful planning and thoughtful, hands-on work can dramatically transform a space. Their project is a great reminder of how much effort goes into a remodel and how rewarding the results can be; the room hardly looks like the same space.
