An Unforgettable Day Trip to Farmville, Virginia: Exploring Historic Trails and Furniture Treasures

Last weekend, we embarked on a delightful day trip to Farmville, Virginia, a charming town nestled deep within rural Central Virginia. Located just an hour’s drive from Richmond, the journey itself was a picturesque transition from urban bustle to serene countryside, offering a refreshing escape into the heart of the Old Dominion. Our adventure was a perfect blend of outdoor exploration and unique retail therapy, providing inspiration and lasting memories for the whole family.

Conquering the High Bridge Trail State Park: A Rails-to-Trails Adventure

The primary reason for our family excursion was to experience the remarkable High Bridge Trail State Park. This incredible “rails-to-trails” park, a former railway line transformed into a multi-use recreational trail, has quickly become a gem in the Virginia State Park system. These types of trails are fantastic for families, providing wide, flat, and often shaded paths perfect for biking, walking, or even horseback riding. The smooth terrain ensures a comfortable ride, making it accessible for all ages and fitness levels.

For those who follow our Instagram updates on Facebook or Twitter, you might have already glimpsed a photo of the awe-inspiring High Bridge itself. This colossal structure, a true engineering marvel, was the focal point of our ride. My personal highlight of the day was successfully coaxing Sherry into riding her bike across this magnificent steel and wood skyway. The sheer height is exhilarating, and seeing her conquer it was a thrill. Sherry, however, had her sights set on a different kind of adventure entirely, one that involved a treasure hunt for home decor.

Historical Significance and Breathtaking Views

The High Bridge is more than just a pathway; it’s a living piece of history. Originally constructed in the 1850s, this old railroad bridge played a crucial role during the Civil War. Both Union and Confederate armies recognized its strategic importance, attempting to burn it down at various points to gain an advantage. The resilience of its original design is testament to the engineering prowess of the era. While its stone piers were eventually replaced with sturdy steel ones in the early 1900s, the bridge still retains its historical grandeur and continues to tell tales of a bygone era.

Spanning the majestic Appomattox River, the bridge stretches for nearly half a mile. But it’s the dizzying twelve-story height that truly commands attention and quickens the pulse. As we paused mid-span, gazing down at the river below, we couldn’t help but marvel at the incredible effort and ingenuity of the people who built such a structure without modern machinery. It certainly made us appreciate the relative safety of our own backyard deck, which is a mere four feet off the ground!

Despite the initial sweaty palms, the bike ride itself was absolutely fantastic. We covered about nine miles of the trail, a manageable distance with our two-year-old strapped securely to the front of my bike. While the entire trail boasts an impressive 31 miles, attempting that with a toddler would have been a rather ambitious, if not impossible, feat for one day. The trail’s surface, mostly crushed gravel, is surprisingly smooth, and its virtually flat elevation (Sherry’s favorite feature!) makes for a relaxed and enjoyable experience for cyclists of all skill levels. We also appreciated the thoughtful amenities along the way, including well-maintained bathrooms and convenient picnic benches, perfect for a quick snack break or a moment to take in the serene surroundings.

Capturing Moments and Family Fun

Unfortunately, capturing the perfect family photo on the bridge proved to be a bit of a challenge. The shot above was the best Sherry managed to get of the two of us. Her creative attempts to get a cool perspective by shooting from above resulted in numerous photos that looked like this awkward angle below. Sherry humorously blames her “stupid short legs” for the photographic mishaps.

Luckily, a kind hiker passing by offered to snap a photo for us, resulting in a much better memento of our ride!

Our little Clara is an excellent bike companion, and our iBert front-mounted bike seat is an absolute lifesaver. This innovative seat allows for easy interaction throughout the ride. We can chat, sing songs, play “I-spy,” and she even “helps” me hold the handlebars. It makes the experience so much more engaging for her, and for us. (Just to clarify, we don’t work for iBert; we simply genuinely love their product for family adventures.)

Green Front Furniture: A Home Decor Wonderland

While the High Bridge Trail offered natural beauty and exhilarating activity, Sherry’s personal quest led us to Green Front Furniture. We had last visited this legendary establishment nearly four years ago, and its reputation for being a treasure trove of discounted furniture and accessories precedes it. Imagine warehouse after warehouse, collectively spanning over 18 football fields, filled with an incredible array of home furnishings – it’s a decor enthusiast’s dream come true, or perhaps, a husband’s well-meaning nightmare! Yet, despite the potential for an overwhelming experience, we actually had a fantastic time exploring the vast selection.

Among the countless unique items, these towering metal giraffes immediately captured our attention. They were a favorite, sparking playful ideas of placing one next to a cozy wooden playhouse for Clara in our backyard. Perhaps someday, such whimsical additions will become a reality!

Navigating the Price Points and Finding Inspiration

When it comes to the price point at Green Front, much of it falls into what we affectionately call “out of our reach.” While you can indeed discover amazing items often discounted by 50% or even more, their initial retail prices are frequently so high that even the sale price remains a considerable splurge. We often encountered stunning pieces like $500 chairs, $1200 tables, or $3000 sofas. However, Green Front isn’t just about making a purchase; it’s an unparalleled source of inspiration. It’s incredibly fun to simply browse, to identify emerging patterns, shapes, and designs that are gaining momentum in the world of interior decor.

For instance, this unique couch, priced at $3639 (its sale price), really impressed us in person. The photo doesn’t quite do it justice, but it featured a thick fabric that, surprisingly, wasn’t embossed. In an oddly understated way, it sported a snakeskin-ish pattern, managing to be both distinct and refined. While such a specific pattern on a major furniture piece might not be something we’d cherish for a decade, its clean lines, plush comfort, and truly unique aesthetic made it memorable. We sank into it for a brief moment, soaking up its luxurious feel before Clara’s demands to “keep moving” pulled us away.

Sherry also “oohed and ahhed” over these striking mirrors, though purely for inspiration. The ornate mirror on the left was priced at $900, and the equally beautiful one on the right at $460. It’s fascinating to see them side by side, as they share a surprising number of design elements despite their price difference. The one on the left, with its intricate details, was undoubtedly our favorite.

This orb-like headboard was another intriguing find. It reminded us somewhat of the one we have over our own bed, with the notable exception that ours was a clearance score from Hobby Lobby – a testament to finding similar styles at vastly different price points!

The exquisite leather chair pictured below was truly the stuff of dreams. We both wholeheartedly agreed that if budget were no concern, that $1491 chair would have instantly come home with us. It possesses that rare quality of being a singular statement piece, effortlessly becoming the coolest item in any room. We spent a good long moment admiring it, offering silent “you go, chair” compliments to its undeniable elegance.

This patterned chair was equally captivating. From the vibrant pattern and color of its fabric to the cleverly painted edge (black around the sides, left natural in the middle), it offered a wealth of DIY inspiration. We envisioned how someone at home could replicate this stylish effect on a thrift store find with similar lines, transforming it into a unique piece with a touch of personal flair.

We also admired this chair, which beautifully showcased an interesting combination of traditional, unpainted wood paired with clean, modern fabric. It’s common to see people painting classic wood frames in bold colors (or even neutrals like white, gray, or black) when reupholstering with contemporary fabrics. However, this piece confirmed that sometimes, leaving the wood in its natural state and adding a crisp, graphic fabric can create an equally striking and sophisticated look.

Sherry absolutely adored this floral bench. While a bit too floral for my personal taste, I couldn’t deny its charming lines and elegant design.

This innovative coffee table was another prime example of why we love window shopping, even when purchasing isn’t the goal. Its unique design instantly sparked a new DIY idea. It’s a bit subtle in the photo, but the inside of this ottoman-style coffee table is made of wood with a removable tray, while the exterior is beautifully upholstered in leather. The clever mix of materials was truly awesome. We envisioned how one could take an old wooden coffee table of a similar rectangular shape (which often pop up at thrift stores), construct a thick wooden frame to be upholstered in leather (or another material), and then securely attach it to the top of the table from underneath. Adding a fitted wooden tray for the opening and perhaps some nailhead trim would complete the full, high-end effect on a budget.

Quirky Finds and Affordable Treasures

Then there was this utterly unique monkey chandelier, priced at $399. We were speechless. Look closely at the monkey on the right, lying horizontally – that’s the part that attaches to the ceiling. So, it’s a monkey hanging from the ceiling, holding up four other monkeys by their tails! Completely insane, yet undeniably amazing. We sincerely hope someone bought it and designed the most awesome, over-the-top room around it. Now that I think about it, spray-painted white in a fun kids’ room could be the coolest thing ever. But don’t tell Sherry – she might want to go back for it!

Beyond Green Front, we stumbled upon a nearby charming shop called The Sleeping Bee, where we found this incredibly versatile cabinet. We could easily picture it gracing a kitchen, filled with dishes, linens, and silverware in elegant cups. Alternatively, it would look equally at home in a garden or sunroom, showcasing plants and other outdoor essentials. Its adaptability truly stood out.

And now, for the more budget-friendly portion of our window shopping expedition! It wasn’t all high-end, multi-thousand-dollar furniture. Here are a few less expensive (though still impressively high-quality) finds we discovered:

We found these delightful Anthropologie-esque bone-looking knobs, a steal at just $1.99 each. These small details can make a huge impact on updating furniture or cabinetry.

This cute blue stool, with its appealing design, was a reasonable $40, offering both functionality and a pop of color.

And this impressive giant mirror, priced at $129, truly commanded attention. The picture doesn’t fully capture its grandeur, but it stood almost three feet tall, making it a statement piece for any room.

Perhaps our favorite find of the entire day was this magnificent giant glass lantern, standing approximately three feet tall. It was discounted from $99 to a fantastic $49. Sherry immediately envisioned one or two of these gracing a porch or patio, holding a giant flickering candle, describing the potential aesthetic as “epic.” Ultimately, we didn’t purchase them, mostly because we were enjoying our leisurely stroll and didn’t want to carry such large items. Also, Clara was getting hungry, and we knew it was time to feed the belly of the beast bean!

Plan Your Own Farmville Adventure!

Our day trip to Farmville was a vibrant tapestry of outdoor exhilaration and inspiring home decor discovery. The High Bridge Trail State Park offers not only a fantastic cycling experience but also a unique opportunity to connect with Virginia’s rich history and natural beauty. The prospect of returning in the fall, when the autumn colors begin to paint the landscape and the weather cools, is incredibly enticing. It promises an even more spectacular backdrop for a family bike ride.

And, of course, any visit to Farmville offers the irresistible excuse to browse the eighteen football fields worth of furniture at Green Front. Whether you’re a serious shopper, a DIY enthusiast seeking inspiration, or simply someone who appreciates unique and well-crafted items, Green Front is an experience not to be missed.

So, whether your ideal adventure involves strapping a toddler to the front of your bike for an invigorating trail ride or tempting them with lollipops to ensure happy shopping companions, Farmville, Virginia, offers a memorable destination. We highly recommend adding it to your travel plans for a distinctive blend of recreation, history, and home decor indulgence. What are your favorite places for shopping or biking adventures? How do you keep your little ones entertained on such excursions?

Psst – We recently shared the hilarious outtakes from Clara’s monthly picture on Young House Life (my favorite one involves a rather politician-esque gesture!). Be sure to check them out for a good laugh.
