Chapter Three: Puppy Love Ponderings

In a delightful twist of fate, our blog’s anniversary, a milestone we celebrated just last Friday, often finds itself closely followed by another cherished occasion we fondly call a “dogiversary.” This year was no exception, as our beloved furry family member, Burger, marked his fourth birthday yesterday. Four whole years have passed since this energetic pup entered our lives, bringing boundless joy and unforgettable moments. Happy Birthday, dear Burgmeister!

To honor his special day and pay homage to his sister’s weekly photo tradition, here’s a recent snapshot of our charming four-year-old:

Our celebration of Burger’s birthday followed our cherished annual rituals: a joyous extra-long walk, an invigorating extended playtime session, and, of course, a delectable, specially selected dessert from the renowned Three Dog Bakery. These small traditions have become cornerstones of our life with Burger, reflecting the deep bond we share. However, this year, Sherry and I added a new layer to the festivities. We decided to embark on a nostalgic journey, dusting off our collection of old home videos. Our mission? To revisit those precious early days when Burger was truly a tiny pup, weighing in at a mere two pounds of pure adorableness.

What unfolded on the screen was more than just a trip down memory lane with our canine companion. The videos unexpectedly offered a fascinating glimpse into our home decor as it stood in 2006 – years before the inception of this blog. It was a stark, yet amusing, reminder of how much our living space, and our style, has evolved. Despite these home videos never being intended for public eyes, their sheer entertainment value was too great to keep to ourselves. We felt compelled to share this authentic slice of our past, provided, of course, that you can overlook a few charming imperfections: the occasional shaky camera work, our rather casual wardrobe choices (sweatpants were a staple!), an abundance of cutesy baby voices directed at a tiny dog, and, yes, a generous display of dog kisses squarely on the mouth. We unabashedly admit, we are “those” kind of people.

As you embark on this visual journey through our past, we highly recommend keeping an eye out for these decorative marvels lurking in the backgrounds of our vintage footage:

  • Sherry’s Original “Office” Space: A Glimpse into Makeshift Creativity
Discover the humble beginnings of Sherry’s first home office, a space defined by practicality rather than polished design. This early setup featured a desk ingeniously skirted with a somewhat wrinkly old sheet, a testament to the resourcefulness often employed when carving out functional areas in a home. It’s a perfect illustration of how initial home offices are often born out of necessity, before evolving into more permanent, aesthetically pleasing arrangements. This segment offers a relatable peek into the universal challenge of creating dedicated workspaces in evolving homes.
  • Our Early Laundry Area and Entryway: Function Over Form
Take a candid look at our old laundry area and entryway, complete with its characterful bi-fold doors. This part of the house, often overlooked in modern home tours, reveals the unglamorous but essential aspects of daily living. It reminds us that every corner of a home, no matter how utilitarian, contributes to its overall story and functionality. Observe how these practical spaces have transformed over the years, mirroring shifts in design priorities and lifestyle needs.

  • Exploring Our Old Floor Plan: A Dynamic Living Space
The videos vividly showcase our original floor plan, offering a unique perspective on the flow and layout of our home back then. At one memorable point, Burger, in his youthful exuberance, dashes through what was then an open doorway connecting the kitchen to our dining room. This very doorway has since been closed off, transforming the old dining room into what is now our cozy nursery. This evolving floor plan serves as a powerful illustration of how homes adapt and reconfigure themselves to meet the changing demands of a growing family and shifting lifestyles, making every space tell a new story.

  • The Den’s Bold Color Scheme and Eclectic Embellishments: A Journey of Style
Immerse yourself in the striking yellow and ice blue color scheme that once dominated our den. This bold choice was complemented by an array of rather unusual silver ornaments perched atop vibrant blue vases, creating a distinct aesthetic that speaks volumes about early 2000s decor trends. You’ll also notice our fireplace screen, which had been painted white in a fleeting moment of decorative experimentation, before we wisely decided to repaint it back to its classic black finish. This segment beautifully captures the experimental phase of home decorating, where personal tastes evolve and design choices are tested, sometimes with results that offer both amusement and insight into past trends.

  • A Parade of Past Furniture: Tracing Our Home’s Furnishing History
The videos are a treasure trove of old furniture pieces that have graced our home over the years, each with its own story. Among these, you’ll spot our original den couch, captured in two distinct phases: both neatly slipcovered and, at times, in its uncovered, original form. This collection of furnishings provides a fascinating look at the lifecycle of home decor, showcasing how pieces are acquired, cherished, and sometimes repurposed or replaced as tastes change and new needs arise. It’s a testament to the journey of creating comfort and style within a home, piece by piece.

  • The Transformation of a Bare Living Room: Embracing Multifunctionality
Witness our living room in its early, rather sparse incarnation, before we discovered its true potential. Initially, it appeared quite bare, lacking a defined purpose. However, through thoughtful planning and a desire for greater utility, we eventually realized that this space could serve us far better as a combined living and dining room. This strategic transformation highlights the dynamic nature of interior design, where rooms are often reimagined and reconfigured to optimize space, enhance functionality, and better suit the evolving lifestyle of those who inhabit the home. It’s a compelling example of how a seemingly empty space can become a versatile, central hub for family life and entertaining.

This heartwarming collection of home videos serves as a profound reminder that homes, much like the lives lived within them, are in a constant state of evolution. The way we decorate and arrange our living spaces is rarely a static, “picture perfect” endeavor from day one. In fact, our own home took a solid four and a half years to truly blossom into the comforting haven it is today. Our journey was filled with learning, experimentation, and sometimes, a comical lack of natural decorating talent – a fact made abundantly clear by these early videos! So, if your house currently feels like an endless work in progress, please don’t fret. Embrace the process, enjoy the transformation, and rest assured, you will get there. Every home tells a story of growth, change, and personal touch.

But enough explanation and reflection. It’s time to immerse yourselves in this delightful trip down memory lane! Grab some popcorn, settle in, and enjoy the show. You can view Burger’s early adventures and our vintage decor right here, or click to watch the full video on YouTube. The video, titled “Burger’s First Year: A Glimpse into Early Decor,” is a candid and entertaining look at where it all began.

So, after witnessing our home’s humble beginnings and Burger’s undeniable cuteness, what are your thoughts? Was Burger not the most adorable pup you’ve ever seen? And more importantly, what do you consider our most egregious decor offense from yesteryear? Or perhaps you have general reflections on how your own house has slowly but surely evolved into a home that perfectly reflects you and your family? We’d love to chat and hear your insights in the comments below.

Psst: A quick note on the video quality. While the footage itself is only four years old, it was originally captured using a ten-year-old mini-DV camera. This explains the charmingly grainy aesthetic you’ll notice throughout the video. Thankfully, technology has advanced significantly since then! We’re particularly grateful for our new Flip Ultra HD, which we managed to snag at Target for an amazing $150 thanks to some fantastic sales. For anyone out there currently searching for a reliable and user-friendly video camera recommendation, the Flip Ultra HD definitely gets our enthusiastic stamp of approval!
