Choosing Nursery Rugs and Curtain Fabric

Embarking on a nursery transformation is an incredibly exciting journey, a beautiful chapter in creating a special haven for our little one. You might recall where we last left off on this grand project, having infused the walls with a cheerful pear color and adding a serene splash of light aqua to the ceiling. This vibrant, yet calming, color palette laid the perfect foundation for what was to become a truly enchanting baby room.

The Grand Shopping Quest for a Dream Nursery

With the fresh paint drying, the real adventure began: a determined, meticulously planned, yet utterly spontaneous shopping spree for our baby girl’s nursery. This wasn’t just any shopping trip; it was a mission. We set out on a Saturday morning with an ambitious goal: to source five crucial and distinct items for the newly painted nursery, all within a single day. The list was precise, reflecting our vision for a safe, stylish, and comfortable space.

Crafting a Haven: Our Nursery Wish List

Our carefully curated list of nursery essentials was designed to bring both functionality and charm to the room. Each item was chosen with intention, focusing on creating a serene and stimulating environment for our upcoming arrival:

  • A Statement Light Fixture: We envisioned either a captivating, fun patterned pendant lamp or a whimsical, sweet chandelier to serve as a focal point and provide gentle illumination. Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood of a nursery, and we wanted something truly special.
  • A Plush, Pure Wool Rug: A 5 x 8′, 100% wool rug was non-negotiable. Our priority was to maintain a VOC-free nursery environment, meaning absolutely no rubber backing or synthetic materials. This commitment to natural fibers ensures a healthier space for our baby while adding warmth and comfort underfoot.
  • Abundant Fabric for Custom Curtains: We needed ample fabric to create three custom curtain panels – two for the window, offering privacy and light control, and one to elegantly replace the now-doorless nursery closet, providing a soft, integrated look.
  • A Simple, Clean-Lined Curtain Rod: To complement our handmade curtains, a minimalist curtain rod was essential. Its clean aesthetic would ensure the focus remained on the fabric, enhancing the overall decor with understated elegance.
  • A Vibrant, Light-Reflecting Mirror: Strategically placed across from the window, a beautiful mirror would not only serve as a decorative element but also amplify natural light, making the nursery feel brighter and more spacious.

Such a specific list might seem daunting for a single-day expedition, but we thrive under pressure. We verbalized our desired finds multiple times, solidifying our objectives. And to our delightful surprise, we returned home that very evening with every single item! It took nearly seven hours of driving and darting into eight different stores, but the mission was accomplished. Remarkably, this shopping blitz occurred on the same morning we picked up our nursery paint. It was, without exaggeration, a serious day of productive sourcing. Here’s a peek into our backseat, showcasing the victorious haul after an incredibly long, yet fulfilling, day of nursery shopping:

Decoding Our Design Philosophy: Mood Boards vs. Organic Discovery

Our approach to transforming this nursery mirrors how we’ve decorated most rooms in our home, with a slight deviation from our recent basement and full bathroom makeovers. For those larger projects, we meticulously crafted mood boards beforehand, meticulously planning every detail (you can explore the bathroom mood board here and the basement one here). However, for other spaces at Casa Petersik, including this cherished nursery, we’ve often adopted a more organic, “let’s-see-what-we-find-and-go-from-there” approach, decorating in stages.

It’s fascinating how parallel these two methods ultimately are. Creating a mood board typically starts with a single item we adore – be it a rug, a pillow, or even a unique drawer pull – and drawing inspiration from its style and color. We then build the entire room around this initial piece, finding complementary furnishings and accessories. Similarly, the organic approach, while less pre-planned, still often begins with a standout item that sparks a direction. From there, we seek out other pieces that harmonize with that initial discovery. The primary difference lies in the pacing and flexibility; the organic method allows for a more fluid evolution, as we don’t purchase everything at once. Instead, we let the design unfold naturally over weeks, or even months, enjoying the process of “pavement pounding” to curate a truly beloved space. Given our baby girl’s imminent arrival, we didn’t have years for this nursery, but we certainly weren’t bound to finish it in a week either, embracing a thoughtful, balanced pace.

Hunting for Treasures: Our Richmond Shopping Stops

On this particular Saturday, our guide wasn’t a pre-designed mood board, but rather the cheerful pear and aqua walls themselves. This vibrant backdrop served as our intuitive starting point. (A crucial tip: always bring your paint chips when shopping! This allows you to hold them against potential purchases and visually confirm how new items “play” with your existing color scheme.)

Stop 1: The Interior Outlet – Fabric Finds and Curtains to Come

Our first destination was a local discount fabric store in Richmond, aptly named The Interior Outlet. Immediately, a playful, graphic pattern caught our eye. This bolt of fabric featured a richer, brighter version of both our pear wall color (seen in the delightful flowers) and our light aqua ceiling color (visible in the charming leaves). While the bold design was appealing, we contemplated if it was a bit too “über modern,” leaning instead towards a “modern-meets-traditional” aesthetic that aligned with our vision of clean lines and punchy patterns, without stark white, and with a more lived-in charm.

And then, we saw *it*. As Carrie Bradshaw might exclaim, “Well hello, lover!” It was undeniably love at first sight. This fabric was everything we hadn’t consciously articulated but instantly recognized as perfect. Its slightly deeper aqua background, combined with a modern yet charming print, exuded warmth and sweetness – truly ideal for our little beanette. Holding up our paint swatches, it was clear this textile would seamlessly create the perfect backdrop, elevating our new favorite fabric in the world. The fortuitous cherry on top? This particular fabric is actually an indoor/outdoor textile, manufactured by P Kaufmann/Waverly. Despite its incredible durability, it still feels delightfully soft and billowy to the touch, offering resistance to fading, dirt, water, and general wear. Could there be a more perfect, practical, and beautiful choice for a little girl’s nursery?

Second, perfect fabric choice for nursery curtains

The price, at $14.99 a yard, was a pleasant surprise; while not a bargain-basement $2, it was significantly less than most designer fabrics. Considering we needed a substantial amount for two floor-to-ceiling window curtains and a third panel for the closet, the cost added up. However, a quick calculation revealed that each of our three custom panels would cost around $35, with some extra fabric for future small projects. Given that our home’s other breezy white curtains were a mere $7 each from Ikea, we justified this “splurge” for our baby girl. We are convinced these custom curtains will be a defining feature of the room, alongside, of course, the other baby. And to further cement our decision, we found a perfect clean-lined, oil-rubbed bronze curtain rod with elegant ring hooks (imagine how posh they’ll look!) on clearance at Target for an incredible $12 for the rod and two packs of rings. This confirmed our belief that the custom curtains would be an invaluable investment. (Spoiler alert: we’ve since made them, and they were so beautiful they almost brought tears of joy to my eyes upon hanging them. Stay tuned for that post very soon!) Oh, and here I am, proudly showcasing our new fabric and my growing baby bump outside the fabric store. Side note: it seems everyone, including fabric vendors, is exceptionally kind to pregnant women. No discounts, but all smiles and preferred customer treatment – I could certainly get used to this!

Stop 2: The Decorating Outlet – Lighting and Layered Textures

With fabric and the curtain rod checked off our list, we still needed an overhead light fixture, a rug, and a mirror. We then headed to The Decorating Outlet, a local gem we frequent, knowing it could potentially fulfill multiple needs. And wouldn’t you know it… they had THE perfect chandelier! It was an aqua capiz shell chandelier, and for any capiz lover, this was pure magic. The immediate happy dance that ensued (complete with gentle belly-holding to avoid jostling our little beanette too much) was quite epic. This shimmering, ethereal piece perfectly captured the whimsical charm we envisioned for the nursery.

The beauty of this particular chandelier is its visual connection to our master bedroom, which is directly across the hall. Our bedroom boasts a wider, more subdued white capiz chandelier, so the nursery’s longer, punchier aqua version creates a lovely familial bond without being overly matchy-matchy. It’s as if our bedroom chandelier had a sweet, playful baby that we adopted for the nursery! And the best part? It was marked down from $125 to a mere $50. Sold! Here’s a sneak peek of it hanging, gracefully complementing our lighter aqua ceiling and the cheerful pear wall. We absolutely adore the texture it brings and the childlike magic it imparts to the space. We initially worried about its length, fearing John, being tall, might bump into it. However, it’s perfectly proportioned – long and dramatic, yet completely walk-under-able. Whew!

Our success continued at The Decorating Outlet. We knew they also carried rugs, and thanks to an “end-of-season clear-out” (which, let’s be honest, might be a year-round affair, but we weren’t complaining!), all in-stock rugs were 50-75% off. Our primary requirement for the nursery rug was 100% wool, free from rubber backing or synthetic materials, to ensure a VOC-free environment for our baby. They had a fantastic selection. Many rugs featured delightful patterns, which were lovely, but we knew our patterned curtains would be the star of the show. So, we patiently pulled out rug after rug, searching for something simple, plush, 100% wool, and under three hundred dollars. Even with the significant discounts, many rugs, originally priced at $800+, remained outside our budget. Then, we discovered a light blue 5 x 8, 100% wool rug – incredibly soft, cushy, and rather swanky, being hand-knotted. This plush find wasn’t quite the exact aqua of our ceiling, but a soft powder blue. It was marked down from $399 to an unbelievable $99! We decided to purchase it, intending to return it if the color felt too cool or didn’t harmonize with the ceiling, chandelier, and curtains. Thankfully, when we got home and placed everything together, it was absolutely perfect. In fact, we realized we were happier it wasn’t an exact match. The rug’s more subdued gray undertone will not only hide dirt better but also create a beautiful, layered interest in the room, adding depth without competing with the other vibrant elements. Score!

Stop 3: TJ Maxx & Marshall’s – The Grand Finale Mirror

The final item on our list was a mirror. Our go-to destinations for unique and affordable mirrors are often TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, and Home Goods. As we swung through TJ Maxx and then Marshall’s, we spotted this large, commanding stunner. And the price? A truly astonishing $39! This is virtually unheard of for such a giant, intricately detailed 30-inch solid wood mirror. Of course, we don’t intend to keep it black, so you’ll have to wait to see what color transformation we have in store for it. Hint: it won’t be white – we know, we’re full of surprises today!

The Unveiling: A Carload of Dreams and a Whisked To-Do List

And so, after approximately seven hours, we concluded our shopping odyssey, returning home with a car brimming with nursery treasures (our poor dog, Burger, was undoubtedly ready for a potty break!). We must admit, our shopping trips aren’t always this fruitful. This particular day felt like a perfect storm of being in the right places at the right time, combined with an open mind to see the potential in items that weren’t initially “perfect” for a baby girl’s room (like that dramatic black mirror). The dedication of seven hours to this cause certainly paid off – it was, indeed, a very long but incredibly rewarding day of shopping.

Smart Shopping Strategies for Your Nursery Project

What’s truly gratifying is that roughly 70% of our finds for the nursery hailed from small local businesses. Our paint came from a green boutique in Richmond, and the rug, chandelier, and fabric were all sourced from local outlets we discovered either by driving past them or searching through old-school Yellow Pages. This underscores a valuable lesson for any home decor project: never underestimate the power of specialty stores in your area. Do some dedicated Googling, and even ask your neighbors for suggestions when you’re hunting for something unique that big-box stores might not offer. Of course, two of our items, the curtain rod and the mirror, came from those larger retailers, proving that a balanced approach often yields the best bounty. It just goes to show that you never know where you’ll find your next amazing deal. If you keep an open mind, stay persistent, and embark on your mission with conviction, you might just come home with a packed car and a significantly whittled-down to-do list. Now, our next steps involve furnishing the nursery with essential pieces, adding delightful art, and integrating clever storage solutions to complete this dream space.
