Craft Your Own Christmas Countdown

The scent of sawdust still lingers faintly in the air, a testament to our ongoing kitchen transformation. While we’re eagerly anticipating the reveal of what feels like the 500th (or perhaps just 20th!) update on our culinary hub, complete with shiny new counters and a gloriously functional sink, our focus this week has joyously shifted. The festive season has officially arrived, and with it, an irresistible urge to fully embrace the magic of Christmas in our new home. Last year, we technically spent the holidays here, having moved on the 13th of December. However, amidst a sea of moving boxes and with Clara being too young to truly grasp the wonder, it felt more like a temporary stop than a cherished celebration. This year, however, is entirely different. It’s our first ‘real’ Christmas, and we’re determined to make it unforgettable, starting with a delightful tradition: a handmade advent calendar for Clara.

Embracing the Holiday Spirit: A Child’s Perspective

There’s a unique joy that comes with experiencing the holidays through the eyes of a child. What might seem like a simple decoration to us becomes an enchanted portal for them. For Clara, this advent calendar isn’t just a countdown; it’s a daily discovery, a tangible thread of anticipation that weaves through the entire month of December. It’s a reminder to slow down, to cherish the small moments, and to fully immerse ourselves in the festive spirit. And speaking of perspective, it’s always fun to see the world from her vantage point – a view I’ll cherish for these fleeting years when she’s still shorter than me, because I know those days are wonderfully, heartbreakingly numbered.

The Budget-Friendly “Aha!” Moment: DIY Advent Calendar

One of the most satisfying aspects of home decorating, especially during the holidays, is finding creative ways to bring your vision to life without breaking the bank. This charming holiday project, believe it or not, cost a mere $7.99! The secret? A dash of ingenuity and a willingness to repurpose. I only purchased one new item for this entire calendar: a versatile scarf hanger from Ikea. The rest came from our existing collection of craft supplies and Christmas decorations, proving that truly magical holiday decor doesn’t require a hefty investment, just a bit of imagination.

Let me paint a picture of how this idea, an unexpected stroke of genius, gradually dawned on me during a typical Ikea excursion. I was casually strolling through the aisles, perhaps searching for storage solutions or some new Scandinavian-inspired home accessory, when I happened upon this scarf hanger. My mind, ever restless for creative outlets, immediately flagged it with a mental “Self, there has got to be some other fun use for that.” I paused, mesmerized by its simple yet ingenious design, standing there with my mouth slightly agape for a good three minutes, completely lost in thought. It was then that a crucial detail registered: it had 28 individual openings. Twenty-eight! That’s incredibly close to 25, the magic number for an advent calendar. In that moment, the entire concept crystallized. I had been meaning to craft an advent calendar for Clara, or as we affectionately call her, “the bean,” and suddenly, the perfect, budget-friendly solution was right in front of me. Sometimes, the best DIY inspiration strikes in the most unexpected places, transforming an everyday item into a festive masterpiece.

Adapting the Design: More Than Just a Countdown

The 28 openings on the scarf hanger provided a wonderful canvas. With 25 days needed for the traditional advent countdown, I decided the three extra circles could serve as “free spaces,” perhaps for special larger ornaments, a bonus treat, or even a small message of love. The remaining openings would proudly display numbered tags and an array of delightful ornaments. Just like that, in a flash of inspiration, we had an instant advent calendar. This isn’t just a static display; it’s designed to be a cherished daily activity for Clara and me. Each day, we’ll select an ornament from the calendar and hang it on our Christmas tree together, making the countdown an interactive and heartwarming experience that deepens our bond and builds anticipation for the main event. It’s these small, consistent traditions that truly define the holiday season in our home, creating lasting memories year after year.

The Beautiful Reality of Holiday Procrastination

In the spirit of full transparency, I must admit that this advent calendar, while lovingly crafted, wasn’t exactly completed ahead of schedule. I actually whipped it up on December 2nd, a testament to my occasional tendency towards creative procrastination! And to further illustrate this delightful habit, our Christmas tree has yet to make its grand appearance in the living room. It’s a sure sign that holiday prep isn’t always perfectly coordinated, but that’s perfectly okay. While we’ve been admiring the individual ornaments as each day ticks by, patiently waiting for their moment to shine on the tree, our plan is to finally get the tree up within the next few days. This will allow us to “catch up” by hanging five or six ornaments all at once, creating an instant burst of festive cheer. From then on, we can happily revert to our day-by-day ritual, ensuring we don’t miss a single moment of the countdown magic. The holidays are about joy, not perfection, and sometimes a little last-minute dash adds to the fun!

Crafting the Calendar: Ornaments with Personality

The assembly of the advent calendar was surprisingly straightforward, utilizing materials we already had on hand. I began by gathering a collection of metal ornament hooks, a staple in any Christmas decorator’s arsenal. For ornaments that didn’t already have their own hooks, I simply threaded these metal hooks through them. The ingenious design of the Ikea scarf hanger made attachment a breeze: I looped each hook over the circle or the bar directly above each circle. All the lower rows had distinct circles above them, creating individual frames for each ornament, while the top row utilized the main bar. This method not only secured the ornaments but also gave them a lovely framed appearance within each opening of the hanger, elevating the overall aesthetic. We also made sure to incorporate some wonderfully quirky ornaments that pay homage to our other beloved “kiddo,” our dog Burger. There’s the delightful hamburger ornament, a fantastic find on clearance for a mere 50 cents at Michael’s after Christmas last year – a true testament to the joy of post-holiday sales!

And then there’s the charming snowflake frame, a cherished keepsake from a few years back, proudly displaying Burger’s adorable mug. These personal touches aren’t just decorations; they’re tiny narratives, woven into the fabric of our holiday celebration, making the calendar uniquely ours and filled with stories and love.

And, of course, no festive display in our home would be complete without a disco ball ornament. We absolutely adore dancing, and this shiny sphere is a subtle nod to the joyous, spontaneous dance parties that frequently erupt in our living room. While it doesn’t directly relate to Burger, one can easily imagine him getting scooped up and swirled around the room in exuberant celebration once we hang it – adding another layer of playful chaos to our holiday cheer.

The Art of Hand-Crafted Tags

Creating the numbered tags was another enjoyable part of this DIY project. I started by cutting out 25 tag-ish shapes from a sturdy piece of cardstock. To ensure consistency, I used the very first tag as a template, carefully tracing around it to create the remaining 24. Once all the shapes were cut, a simple hole puncher made quick work of creating the openings that would allow them to slip easily onto the ornament hooks. Before attaching them, however, I embarked on a brief online quest for font inspiration. A quick Google search led me to this lovely font, which provided the perfect visual guide. With the inspiration open on my screen, I meticulously sketched each number onto the cardstock tags with a pencil. It’s always beneficial to have a type inspiration nearby when you’re free-handing something, offering a valuable reference point for achieving a consistent and appealing look.

Once I was satisfied with the shape and placement of each sketched number, I carefully traced over them with a fine-point pen. This process transformed the faint pencil lines into crisp, defined numerals, giving each tag a polished yet handmade feel. The slight imperfections inherent in hand-drawn elements are, in my opinion, what give these tags their unique charm and character.

They’re definitely not pristine, machine-printed numbers, but that’s precisely the point. The slightly irregular lines and personal touch of hand-lettering contribute to their undeniable cuteness and imbue the entire advent calendar with a homemade warmth that mass-produced items simply can’t replicate. Each tag is a tiny piece of art, made with love and anticipation for the holiday season.

Damage-Free Holiday Decor: Hanging Solutions

When it comes to holiday decorating, especially in a new home, preserving your walls and doors is always a priority. That’s why I opted to hang our advent calendar using a removable 3M hook. These ingenious little devices are fantastic for temporary decor, allowing you to display items securely without the worry of leaving unsightly nail holes behind. This particular spot, on the front of our coat closet door, was perfect – easily accessible for Clara and visible to everyone entering the house, instantly spreading holiday cheer without any permanent alterations to our home’s interior.

Beyond the Calendar: Our Upcoming Holiday Adventures

With the advent calendar now proudly displayed, our home is truly starting to feel festive, despite the ongoing kitchen updates. We have a myriad of fun holiday plans lined up for the next few weeks, ensuring our new house fully transforms into a winter wonderland. Expect upcoming posts detailing our tree decorating escapades – yes, we’re planning both a charming tabletop tree and a magnificent full-sized one, each with its own unique theme and personality. And the festive spirit won’t be confined indoors; we are bound and determined to tackle some outdoor decorating, hanging twinkling lights and truly getting our exterior festive and bright for the neighborhood to enjoy. The holiday season is a fantastic excuse to pause our regular renovation projects and immerse ourselves in the pure joy of celebration and seasonal creativity.

A Festive Collaboration: Secret Santa with Fellow Bloggers

Adding another layer of excitement to our holiday season, the wonderful Mrs. Limestone sweetly extended an invitation to partake in her delightful Secret Santa exchange, alongside a fantastic group of fellow bloggers. This is always such a fun and thrilling tradition, fostering community and sparking creativity among us. The challenge is to craft a few thoughtful, gifty goodies and secretly mail them off to an assigned (and currently unknown!) recipient, while eagerly awaiting a mystery package from another blogger. It’s a wonderful blend of giving, receiving, and a bit of playful suspense.

This means I’m currently racking my brain to come up with some truly unique and personal gifts, hoping to capture the essence of the recipient without knowing exactly who they are! It’s an exciting challenge, but I confess, I have a touch of stage fright when it comes to creative gift-giving, feeling the pressure to come up with something truly special. Here’s hoping the daily ritual of advent-calendar-ing and soaking in the holiday spirit will get my creative juices flowing! The mystery of who has me as their Secret Santa is equally intriguing. Any guesses? We’ll all have to try and figure it out together once the packages start arriving!
