DIY Vacation Keepsake Display: Crafting Charming Memory Domes for Your Travel Treasures
The past few weeks have been incredibly dynamic and creatively fulfilling here at home. It feels like we’ve been bouncing from one exciting project to the next, a delightful whirlwind of renovation and decor. This burst of activity is wonderfully refreshing, especially before we dive headfirst into a larger-scale renovation that will undoubtedly demand every ounce of our attention. Just recently, we’ve had a blast with a few exciting updates: adding playful raindrops and a fresh pink door to Clara’s room, engaging with a reader’s intriguing design dilemma that really got our creative juices flowing, and finally conquering our ambitious sunroom floor tiling project. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’re already laying the groundwork for a major kitchen refresh, a room that definitely needs more help than I ever did in Calculus class!
Amidst this flurry of home improvement, I managed to squeeze in a smaller, yet incredibly satisfying, crafty project that, thankfully, didn’t end in disaster. Believe me, there were a few nail-biting moments of doubt along the way. This particular endeavor has been on my टू-do list for what feels like an eternity – about two years, to be precise. My goal? To find a truly charming and easily viewable way to display our treasured vacation keepsakes. After some thoughtful experimentation, here’s the delightful result:

Reimagining Your Travel Memories: From Jars to Domes
This new display concept is essentially a beautiful hybrid – a vacation memory jar meets an elegant snowglobe or a decorative cloche. What’s even better is how incredibly easy and affordable it was to create. Each one cost me a mere $2.79 to assemble, proving that sentimental decor doesn’t have to break the bank.
But let’s take a quick trip back in time, a sort of DeLorean-powered flashback. Back in 2008, I embarked on a similar project, creating six distinct vacation time capsules using canning jars. While the idea was sweet at the time, I confess that over the last few years, these jars had been tucked away, out of sight. The sad truth is, I just didn’t love them anymore as a display method. It wasn’t the keepsakes themselves – I adore those precious mementos – but the containers simply didn’t serve them well.

The Shortcomings of Traditional Keepsake Jars
While I certainly appreciate the rustic charm of canning jars – and they seem to be more “in” vogue now than ever – they presented a few undeniable drawbacks for displaying cherished items. My primary frustration was that when viewed from above, such as on console tables, desks, or dressers, almost all you could see was the lid, obscuring the precious items tucked inside. This meant the beautiful shells, foreign coins, or tiny souvenirs were often hidden from immediate view, diminishing their impact (as you can see in the image above).
Another significant issue arose when viewing the jars head-on, or when they were placed on higher shelves like a bookcase. The wavy, imperfect glass of the canning jars distorted and blurred the contents within. It was frustrating to have a clear memory become a hazy silhouette behind imperfect glass. To illustrate this point, take a look at the comparison below. Notice the stark difference in clarity between the objects inside the canning jar and those in a regular stemless wine glass. The items in the glass on the right are so much clearer, aren’t they?

Adding to these visual challenges, the Scotch tape labels I had affixed years ago were often difficult to read, especially against certain backgrounds (you might spot one in the picture above). It became clear that a new approach was needed. I envisioned a display method that would accomplish three crucial objectives:
- Provide clearer, more legible labeling for each keepsake collection.
- Showcase our precious keepsakes behind perfectly clear, non-wavy glass.
- Ensure the contents were highly visible from both above and the side, maximizing their display potential.
The Inspiration and Hunt for Perfect Materials
At first, achieving these goals felt like a monumental task. I worried that finding the right components would be either too expensive or simply impossible. However, inspiration struck after I stumbled upon a clever project online. This particular DIY sparked an “aha!” moment, suggesting a way to combine inexpensive stemless wine glasses or small vases from a craft store with thin slices of wood, all held together with some type of adhesive or caulk. The idea certainly had the potential to go awry – I could picture sand escaping everywhere – but I was determined to try, and luckily, I encountered a few fortunate breaks along the way.
My initial plan to find natural wood slices proved challenging. I couldn’t locate any tree branches of the correct thickness in our yard or at a local firewood supplier; they were either triangular, too narrow, or completely bark-free, which wasn’t the aesthetic I was aiming for. Even craft stores didn’t offer suitable pre-made wood slices, aside from some overly large birch options online that cost a hefty $15 each. My luck changed, however, during a stroll through JoAnn. There, nestled in their wooden box, birdhouse, and plaque section, I discovered these perfect 4 x 4-inch round wood plaques for an amazing 79 cents each! And, conveniently, in their party and glassware section, they stocked stemless wine glasses for just $1.99.

Finding both potential items at the same store was incredibly helpful. It allowed me to instantly flip the wine glass over onto a wood plaque right there in the aisle, to visualize how seamlessly they would fit together. The moment they aligned so perfectly felt like a minor miracle, confirming I had found the ideal components for my memory domes.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Own Memory Domes
1. Preparing and Painting the Wood Plaques
As soon as I arrived home, I eagerly began the process by painting the wood plaques. This step was crucial for establishing the aesthetic foundation of the memory domes. I deliberated over various color options: a bold, vibrant hue; a crisp white; a sophisticated charcoal; or even a subtle whitewash or stain. Ultimately, I settled on a timeless, neutral taupe-y color, specifically leftover Revere Pewter from our upstairs bathroom project. My reasoning was simple: a subdued base would ensure that the treasured items inside each dome remained the undisputed focal point, allowing their unique colors and textures to truly shine without competition from a busy base.
After a quick wipe-down to ensure the wood was clean and dust-free, I applied two even coats of paint. It was a slight gamble not to use a primer, but to my delight, the wood took the paint beautifully, with no bleed-through or visible wood grain disrupting the smooth finish. This saved an extra step and reinforced my choice of paint. Allow ample drying time between coats and before proceeding to the next step, ensuring a durable and professional finish.

2. Clear and Concise Labeling
Once the painted plaques were completely dry, it was time for labeling. Using a fine-tip Sharpie, I carefully wrote the name of each travel destination along the side of the wood base, accompanied by the year we visited. This method proved infinitely clearer and easier to read than the previous tape-on-wavy-glass approach. The crisp, clean lettering on the solid taupe background ensures that each memory dome is instantly identifiable, enhancing both its functionality and its aesthetic appeal. Consider using a stencil for perfect lettering if your handwriting isn’t as confident, or even printing out labels on clear sticker paper for a polished look.

3. Selecting the Ideal Adhesive: Clear Silicone Caulk
Choosing the right adhesive was paramount for a secure yet re-accessible seal. After careful consideration, I decided that clear silicone caulk would be the perfect medium to bond the glass dome to the wooden plaque. My reasoning was multi-faceted:
- Superior Seal: Unlike thinner, runnier adhesives or glues that might create an inconsistent bond, the thicker, denser consistency of silicone caulk ensures a tight, durable, and waterproof seal. This is crucial for containing loose items like sand, preventing any accidental spills or escapes.
- Clarity: The clear nature of the caulk means it will blend seamlessly with the glass and painted wood, maintaining the clean, minimalist aesthetic of the memory dome without unsightly visible seams.
- Re-openable Design: Perhaps the most significant advantage is the caulk’s flexibility and ease of removal. Should I ever wish to update the contents or retrieve a keepsake, the silicone caulk can be easily scored with an X-Acto knife and carefully peeled away. This thoughtful design means I won’t have to resort to “Hulk-smashing” the dome like an old piggy bank to access its treasures – a definite risk with more permanent super glues or epoxies. This re-access feature adds a practical layer to the sentimental value.
4. Applying the Caulk with Precision
I applied a thin, continuous line of GE Premium Waterproof Silicone II Caulk (in the clear color) around the top edge of the stemless wine glass. Precision here is key for a clean finish. Pro Tip: When preparing your caulk tube, make sure the opening isn’t too wide. A smaller opening allows for greater control, preventing the caulk from flowing out too quickly or thickly, which can lead to a messy, drippy application. Mastering this skill is invaluable for virtually any caulking project you undertake.

Safety Update: As a slightly paranoid expectant mother at the time, I opted to wear a ventilator while working with the caulk gun, channeling my inner Darth Vader. While it’s always wise to ensure good ventilation, I later discovered that this specific type of caulk is on the “green list” for safer use. Hurrah for peace of mind!
5. Assembling the Memory Dome
After applying the caulk, I carefully pressed the painted wood round onto the top of the glass. Crucially, I kept the glass in its upright position during this step. This prevents any of the carefully placed keepsakes (especially loose items like sand) from spilling out onto the floor, which I was convinced would happen if I attempted to flip it over before the two pieces were securely joined to the wooden plaque.

Once the glass and wood were gently joined, I could confidently turn the entire assembly over without any spillage. I then placed it on a flat surface, ensuring the glass dome was perfectly centered on the wooden base. While holding the glass down with one hand (this helps keep it centered as the caulk begins to set and before it fully cures), I used my other hand and a clean paper towel to meticulously wipe away any excess caulk that might have oozed out from the seam. This crucial cleanup step ensures a professional, seamless finish, making the bond virtually invisible.

The Beautiful Result: Displaying Your Cherished Travel Memories
The caulk only required about three hours to dry sufficiently, leaving each memory dome perfectly sealed and looking incredibly seamless. The result is exactly what I envisioned: a beautifully contained display where even fine sand from a distant beach is securely held within, ready to evoke cherished memories. I even gave one a good shake, just like a snow globe, and happily, there was no sand explosion! This confirmed the integrity and strength of the seal, a huge relief and a testament to the effectiveness of the silicone caulk.

Currently, these charming memory domes are gracing various surfaces throughout our office and living room, adding little pockets of travel inspiration to our everyday spaces. However, my long-term dream is to eventually gather them all together in our bedroom. We’re envisioning adding a beautiful wall of built-in cabinetry there, designed to make our bed feel like it’s tucked into a cozy, custom-made nook. I can just picture these memory domes, all lined up perfectly on one of those shelves, creating a personal gallery of our adventures. Sigh… can’t you just see it?

Expanding Your Collection: A Future of Travel and Keepsakes
As we continue to explore new destinations, I’d absolutely love to keep expanding this collection of memory domes. The enthusiastic collector in me is already tempted to purchase at least ten more wood plaques and stemless glasses now, just to have them on hand for future vacations. This way, all our future memory domes will perfectly match the existing ones, creating a cohesive and ever-growing display. Is that a little crazy, or perfectly rational? What are your thoughts?
It leads me to wonder, how do you, our readers, choose to display your treasured vacation keepsakes? Do you utilize elegant shadow boxes, meticulously curated scrapbooks, or perhaps beautifully framed photographs? I once read somewhere that “experiential purchases” – like travel – bring us the most enduring happiness. The theory suggests that investing in an amazing vacation can yield longer-lasting positive effects and prevent the “taken-for-granted” feeling that can accompany upgrades to everyday items, which we quickly become accustomed to. (I found an interesting article here discussing this concept, though I’m not certain it’s the exact one I initially read.)
This idea certainly reinforces my desire to maximize the joy from our little vacations and to lovingly memorialize them when we return home. Even though our trips are typically road trips across familiar landscapes rather than exotic foreign locales, each one creates precious memories. Maybe someday, I’ll have a beautifully crafted memory dome filled with treasures from the bustling souks of Morocco or the stunning beaches of Australia. A girl can certainly dream, and these DIY keepsake displays are a perfect way to keep those dreams alive and vivid in our home decor.
