Embracing the Holiday Spirit: Transforming Our New Home with Festive Cheer
There’s an undeniable magic that sweeps through a home during the holidays, especially when it’s your first Christmas in a new dwelling. Six months into making this house our own, the festive season offers the perfect opportunity to infuse every corner with warmth, character, and that special holiday coziness. This year has been particularly exhilarating, as we’ve embarked on new decorating adventures, from adorning our front entrance and setting up our beloved Christmas tree to discovering fresh ways to festive-ify various spaces. Having new elements like a fireplace mantel and a grand staircase – a first for us in seven years of homeownership – has truly sparked our creative spirit and allowed us to craft entirely new holiday vignettes. Join us as we explore how we’ve decked the halls and brought joyful charm to every nook and cranny of our new home this season, turning it into a truly festive sanctuary.
Creating a Grand Welcome: Our Staircase & Foyer

For years, I’ve admired beautifully decorated staircases in holiday magazines, dreaming of the day we’d have one to call our own. This year, that dream became a delightful reality! While many of our decor items were cherished pieces we already owned, the staircase demanded something fresh. A quick trip to JoAnn Fabrics yielded some beautiful faux garland and an evergreen sprig for our green HomeGoods jug, all snagged at a fantastic 50% off holiday sale, costing us just $14. The trick to a lush-looking staircase is layering. I used saved red ribbons from previous years’ presents – a thrifty and sentimental touch – to secure the garland at the top, middle, and bottom of the railing. For extra peace of mind and to ensure everything stayed perfectly in place, a clear zip tie was subtly added at the top, hidden beneath the ribbon. This simple yet elegant treatment instantly elevated the entryway, creating a truly inviting and festive atmosphere.
At the base of the stairs, our HomeGoods bench, destined for the foot of our bed after a future recovery project, found its temporary holiday home in the foyer. Draped with a plush furry blanket, it became a cozy landing spot, perfectly complementing the garland. The inspiration for this festive nook actually came from a charming photo from Country Living that several friends shared, remarking on how much it resembled our style, even down to the blue trim in the adjacent room. It was such a delightful coincidence and solidified the vision for this enchanting holiday display. However, the true showstopper in our foyer, and an instant family favorite, is undoubtedly our Christmas Moose!
Meet Morris, The Christmas Moose: A Foyer Staple

Our journey to acquiring “Morris The Moose” began unexpectedly during a September visit to HomeGoods. To my surprise, it was John who spotted him, declared his name, and instantly envisioned his grand holiday destiny. For a mere $9, Morris became ours, with the explicit purpose of becoming our annual Christmas mascot. John’s enthusiasm was contagious; he proclaimed, “We should bring Morris home and hang him every Christmas, so he can live out his destiny as The Christmas Moose.” And just like that, a new family tradition was born.
Morris quickly became Clara’s absolute favorite holiday decoration. While we might not be able to bring live seals onto the roof, a festive silver moose in the foyer is certainly a wonderful alternative! One of the best aspects of Morris is his effortless installation. I simply used an existing screw that usually holds an Ikea frame on that wall, making it incredibly easy to swap out art for our beloved moose every December. To complete his festive transformation, I adorned his neck with remnants of ribbon, a playful pom-pom fringe, and a few delicate pink ornaments, adding a touch of personalized charm. Morris now stands as a whimsical greeter, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone who enters our home.
Living Room Mantel Magic: Festive Focal Point

The living room mantel is a natural focal point, and it’s where some of our most cherished holiday decorations have found their place year after year. Our beautiful green feather trees, a lovely hand-me-down from John’s sister (originally from Target), grace the ledge, providing height and texture. They are perfectly complemented by stacks of artfully wrapped presents. These faux gifts are my ultimate no-fuss holiday accessories; I wrapped them back in 2010, and they effortlessly create the illusion of a master gift wrapper, despite the fact I’ve only managed to shop for about 6% and wrap 3% of this year’s actual gifts! They’re a brilliant solution for adding festive cheer without the stress. Below, our stockings hang, currently personalized for “Mommy & Daddy,” “Clara,” and “Burger.” With a new little one joining us next year, we’re already envisioning a set of five, ensuring everyone has their very own special stocking, free from any random sharing!

Among these festive elements, my absolute favorite detail on the mantel is the whimsical cardboard Burger. This unique piece, lovingly handmade by a reader during a book tour signing last year, is depicted as “sherpa-ing” a tiny present. His endearing presence never fails to bring a smile to my face, adding a touch of playful charm and a heartwarming story to our holiday display.
Illuminating the Season: Repurposed Outdoor Stars

Many of you have inquired about the fate of our beloved outdoor star pendants in our new home (you can revisit their original glory here). I’m thrilled to report that they’ve found a magnificent new purpose indoors! We finally got around to hanging them in the corner of what we’ve transformed from a sunroom into a cozy veranda. Now, every evening, their soft, warm glow can be admired from the comfort of our living room sofa. These repurposed stars not only add a magical ambiance to our home but also serve as a beautiful reminder of past holiday seasons, seamlessly integrating cherished decor into our current living space.
Subtle Sentiments: Foyer Console Details

Even the smaller surfaces in our foyer received a touch of casual holiday cuteness. Our console table, a practical piece, became a canvas for understated festive charm, primarily through the artful arrangement of leftover ribbons and a treasured homemade reindeer. It’s amazing how simple additions can elevate everyday items.

Our year-round letterpress “love” blocks were given a cheerful holiday makeover. A delicate pink ribbon and two tiny matching ornaments were all it took to transform them from everyday decor into a charming festive vignette. It’s a testament to how small, thoughtful details can make a big impact in holiday styling.

And then there’s this precious reindeer, a true heirloom crafted by John’s grandfather. This deeply sentimental piece holds immense emotional value for us. Seeing him perched atop his pile of festive ribbons as we descend the stairs fills us with warmth and reminds us of cherished family connections during this special time of year. Incorporating sentimental items like this handmade reindeer adds a layer of personal history and unique character to our holiday decor that mass-produced items simply cannot replicate.
Office Nook & Creative Corners: Personalized Touches

Even our office, a space dedicated to productivity, received a dose of holiday cheer. Our leaning chalkboard became a canvas for a festive message, personalized with elements suggested by Clara – charming birds and delicate snowflakes. The beauty of a chalkboard is its versatility; it allows for ever-changing seasonal expressions. I’m looking forward to Clara’s artistic contributions, perhaps a snowman at the bottom, or some of her current favorite subject matter: bunnies! It’s a wonderful way to involve her in the decorating process and infuse a childlike wonder into our workspace.
A Winter Wonderland Craft: Snow-Filled Boxes

One of the most delightful aspects of holiday decorating is the opportunity for family crafting. Clara and I recently embarked on a fun little Christmas craft project that, I must admit, resulted in a wonderfully hilarious mess of fake snow – truly, it was THE BEST! Our mission was to create two charming snow-filled boxes, complete with miniature trees and tiny ceramic dogs, envisioning them as quaint winter wonderland scenes. It was a project filled with laughter, creativity, and a healthy dose of glitter.

(Please excuse Captain Barnacle’s legs making a cameo in this shot; he’s Clara’s constant companion!) For this charming project, our supplies were simple yet effective:

I sourced two elegant glass boxes from TJ Maxx for around $7.99 each. Along with these, I picked up a generous bag of fake snow, a two-pack of delightful mini trees, and a package of tiny ceramic dogs from Michaels. These charming little figurines are typically found in the section for miniature holiday villages, making them perfect inhabitants for our snow-filled scenes. This curated selection of affordable materials allowed us to create a high-impact craft without breaking the bank.
Clara enthusiastically took charge, having the best time filling each box with a generous mound of the fluffy fake snow. She then carefully positioned a few tiny dogs and a miniature tree in each, creating her own whimsical landscapes. These adorable snow boxes now proudly reside on our media cabinet in the living room. Clara can often be found standing just inches away, completely captivated by her creations. She’s even given names to some of the dogs – Elmo is the one on the right, and the distinguished dog in the top hat is Gru. And for those wondering about the glorious mess, rest assured, our trusty hand-vac proved to be a hero, diligently sucking up all the glittering snow particles that inevitably exploded across the table and floor during our joyful crafting session!

And there you have it – our journey to infuse our new house with a little extra holiday fun and festive charm. With stockings hung, ribbons draped, and our magnificent silver moose standing guard, our home feels undeniably cozier and more inviting than ever. The act of decorating, especially in a new space, has been a joyous experience, cementing new traditions and creating cherished memories. What festive touches have you added to your home this season? Is anyone else as utterly delighted by decorating their stairs as I am? I confess, I can’t be the only one who finds themselves strolling by the railing every ten minutes, just to admire its festive transformation. We’d love to hear about your unique holiday decor ideas!
