Crafting a Mess-Proof Changing Pad Cover

Nursery Nook Refresh: Practical Updates & Charming Touches for a Welcoming Baby Space

Transforming a baby’s nursery from a blank canvas to a cozy, functional haven is a journey filled with love, anticipation, and a fair share of practical considerations. We recently shared our progress on this special space, highlighting the fresh coat of green paint on the closet door and the initial steps in making it ready for our little one, Teddy. As new parents, we know that beyond the aesthetics, the true magic lies in the details – those small, thoughtful additions that streamline daily routines and add warmth to the room. In this comprehensive update, we’re diving into a series of functional enhancements and charming decor elements that are making life with a newborn just a little bit easier and the nursery even more inviting.

From tackling the inevitable mess of diaper changes with a clever DIY solution to finding the perfect spot for every tiny garment, we’re sharing seven key updates. Whether you’re a seasoned parent or expecting your first, these insights into nursery essentials, smart organization, and personalized touches will inspire you to create a beautiful and highly functional space for your baby.

Update #1: Embracing Practicality – A Game-Changing Changing Pad Cover

The changing station is arguably one of the most frequently used areas in a nursery, and as such, it needs to be both comfortable for the baby and incredibly practical for parents. We had initially fallen in love with a delightful arrow-patterned wallpaper for the nursery, but ultimately decided it might be a bit too busy for the wall behind the crib, especially with the built-in shelving. Imagine our delight, then, when we stumbled upon a changing pad cover on Etsy featuring the exact same charming arrow pattern! It was an instant favorite, not just for us, but seemingly for Teddy too. He’s certainly made his mark on it—literally! We’ve experienced countless “accidents” that have put its durability, and our laundry routine, to the test.

We’ve heard all the clever tips and tricks for minimizing spray during diaper changes – using a washcloth, a wipe, or even a clean diaper as a shield. However, despite our best efforts, we often found that liquids still managed to run down and pool on the changing pad cover. This meant constantly stripping it off and washing it, sometimes multiple times a day, in those hectic first few days home from the hospital. Even if we had a small stack of spare covers, we’d still be running the washing machine non-stop. This scenario brought back vivid memories of raising our first daughter, Clara, who shared the same remarkable talent for creating a mess during changes. Back then, we found a wipeable changing pad cover, usually made of vinyl, to be a true lifesaver over her standard cloth pad. It was so much easier to simply wipe down the surface than to constantly launder the entire cover.

Update #2: The DIY Waterproof Changing Pad – A Nursery Essential

Inspired by our past experiences and current challenges, we decided to replicate that success with Teddy. Given that our old vinyl pad now lives in the car for on-the-go changes, I set out to create a durable, wipeable changing pad cover for the house using oilcloth. This DIY approach not only saved us money but also allowed for a customized solution to a very common new-parent dilemma. The process was incredibly straightforward:

  1. Material Sourcing: I picked up half a yard of “marine coat vinyl” in crisp white from JoAnn for just $6. While they didn’t have traditional white oilcloth, this vinyl was a perfect, affordable alternative. Remarkably, this small piece of fabric yielded two complete changing pad covers, meaning we now have a spare, and one we can even use downstairs for quick changes on the ottoman. Talk about efficiency!
  2. Tracing for Precision: To get the perfect shape, I simply laid out our existing Skip Hop car changing pad (the shiny vinyl part faces up, with a black fabric back) and traced its outline onto the back of the white marine coat vinyl fabric with a Sharpie. There was ample space, so I traced it twice to create both covers.
  3. Simple Cut & Go: The beauty of vinyl is that it doesn’t fray. This meant all I had to do was cut out the traced shapes, with absolutely no need for hemming or any additional finishing. It was a quick, no-sew project that delivered immediate, tangible benefits.

This waterproof cover has been nothing short of awesome. Just look at Teddy modeling his new pad! In a truly ironic and completely unscripted moment, he actually peed right through his diaper and onesie while we were capturing this photo. It was as if he wanted to provide live proof of its efficacy! Thankfully, it worked like a charm, containing the mess entirely. This simple DIY project has significantly reduced our laundry load, saving us precious time and energy – and for new parents, every little bit helps!

Update #3: Smart Diaper Disposal – Keeping Smells at Bay

A functional nursery isn’t complete without an effective solution for diaper disposal. While we’re currently using disposables until Teddy is ready for our cloth diapers (a transition we also made with Clara), we still needed a reliable system to manage odors. We opted for a simple white trash can from Ikea, which has proven to be an excellent choice. Its key feature is a lid with a step-to-open mechanism, which is incredibly convenient. This hands-free operation is a game-changer when you’re juggling a wiggly baby or soiled items. More importantly, the tightly sealed lid effectively locks in unpleasant smells, ensuring the nursery remains fresh and inviting. It’s a testament to how even the most basic items, chosen thoughtfully, can significantly improve daily parenting tasks and overall nursery hygiene.

Update #4: The Indispensable Boppy Pillow – A Comfort Must-Have

In the realm of “I’ll take all the small conveniences I can get while running on a lot less sleep,” the Boppy nursing pillow definitely stands out. We received this adorable navy and white Boppy cover, also from Etsy, as a baby gift from John’s sister, and it has been invaluable. While some parents choose to skip the Boppy, opting for regular pillows or blankets, I personally find it indispensable, especially in these early days when the baby is tiny and nursing around the clock. The ergonomic support it provides during feeding sessions significantly reduces strain on your back and arms, making the experience much more comfortable for both parent and baby. I even surprised myself by wishing I had brought it to the hospital, having initially dismissed it as “overkill.” Using wadded-up blankets and pillows simply didn’t compare to the consistent support and comfort of the Boppy. It’s truly a must-have for new parents, offering that much-needed extra support during countless hours of feeding and cuddles.

Update #5: Adding Unique Character with Handmade Nursery Art

Incorporating unique, personal touches is key to making a nursery truly special. For us, this came in the form of a charming craft fair item we discovered at the annual Spring Bada Bing event here in Richmond – an event we’ve blogged about several times before. Supporting small businesses and browsing handmade wares is always a joy, and this particular piece, crafted by The Little Bandit Shop, immediately caught our eye. It’s an embroidery hoop featuring discontinued fabric from Ikea, hand-stitched with adorable green vines on each side. We found its delicate charm irresistible and saw it as a wonderful piece of nursery art that adds a touch of whimsy and personality. Moreover, it sparks inspiration for future DIY projects, showcasing how simple materials can be transformed into something truly delightful and unique for a baby’s room. This piece is a gentle reminder that nursery decor doesn’t always have to be store-bought; sometimes the most treasured items are those with a story, created with care and passion.

Update #6: Streamlining Laundry with a Stylish Nursery Hamper

Another crucial element for any functional nursery is a dedicated clothes hamper. Babies, as we all know, generate an impressive amount of laundry, and having an easily accessible, washable solution is paramount. We found a lovely basket at HomeGoods that was roughly the same size as the hamper we use in Clara’s room. To make it truly functional and hygienic, I quickly sewed a simple, inside-out pillowcase to serve as a liner. The “inside-out” aspect is a clever trick: when you fold the edges over the side of the basket, the patterned side of the fabric faces outwards, presenting a neat and attractive finish. Conversely, when you look down into the hamper, you see the patterned side, adding a pleasant visual detail. This liner is incredibly easy to pull out and toss into the wash, making laundry day just a little less cumbersome. I picked up half a yard of a soft gray ticking fabric from JoAnn for just $4, proving that practical nursery solutions don’t have to break the bank. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in maintaining an organized and fresh nursery environment.

Update #7: Crafting a Personalized Crib Wall – The “T” Pattern Plan

Finally, we turn our attention to the focal point of the nursery: the wall behind the crib. While this project is still in the planning stages, we’ve solidified an exciting idea that we’re confident will bring a unique, personal touch to Teddy’s room. John came up with a subtle yet sweet repeating pattern of “T”s, obviously for Teddy! Although our photoshopped rendition might not fully capture the realistic execution, in our minds, the final result will be absolutely awesome. We’ve considered several other options for crib wall decor, but this personalized “T” pattern feels just right – it’s both charming and understated, perfect for a baby’s room that will evolve over time. Our next step is to decide on the best application method. We’re currently debating whether to create a custom stencil to paint the “T”s directly onto the wall, similar to how we did Clara’s raindrop wall, or if we’ll opt for contact paper or another adhesive method for easier application and potential future changes. We’re eager to get started and will definitely keep you posted on our progress for this exciting nursery DIY project!

The Fourth Wall & Future Play Area Potential

Beyond these key updates, we wanted to give you a glimpse of the nursery’s fourth wall, an angle that might have briefly appeared in this video tour but hasn’t had its dedicated photo moment. Currently, this wall is purely functional, featuring a floor lamp that’s wired to the wall switch – a simple yet effective way to illuminate the room upon entry. Looking ahead, our vision for this space includes installing an overhead light with a dimmer, offering more versatile lighting options. More excitingly, we plan to transform this wall into a fun and engaging little play area once Teddy is a bit older, much like we did with Clara’s “Wall-O-Fun”. This forward-thinking approach ensures the nursery remains adaptable and grows with our child, transitioning seamlessly from an infant’s haven to a vibrant toddler play zone.

Are you currently in the process of adding those final, flurry of small but impactful things to a space that’s mostly complete? Have you found any amazing gems on Etsy or at a local craft show that have transformed a room? Or perhaps, like Teddy, your little one is an expert at testing the waterproof capabilities of their changing pad?

We love hearing about your experiences and discoveries! Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let’s inspire each other to create the most wonderful spaces for our little ones.

Psst- To catch up on Teddy’s nursery transformation from the very beginning, explore our comprehensive journey: we started by painting all the pink trim, then laid new hardwood floors to set a fresh foundation. Next, we selected the perfect rug, followed by painting the walls & ceiling for a cohesive look. We then strategically added built-ins for essential storage, meticulously tackled some baby bedding, and hung extra thick crown molding to elevate the room’s architecture. The built-ins were then filled with books, toys, and cute accents, and we introduced a practical storage cabinet that doubles as a changing table. We also crafted a charming mobile, and added art and painted the closet door green to tie everything together. Each step has brought us closer to the perfect nursery for Teddy!
